Sons of Anarchy - Suits of Woe - Review

After last weeks huge bombshell that Abel dropped, Jax is trying to figure out what to do. This episode focused entirely on Jax's response to the news he had found out. Within the episode Jax assaults Unser, Gemma flees, Juice executes his plan to kill Lin, and just about everyone finds out about what really happened to Tara. This episode was a jam packed 73 minute installment, and surprising the longest we have had this season. The cast also upped their game, with their performances. It truly was an emotional punch in the gut for all these characters.

The episode opened like it normally does, by switching between a set of characters in very quick scenes. This time we saw Gemma talking to herself at the table. On first viewing I did start to go back, and forth in my mind as to who she was talking to, but then I soon realized she was talking to herself again like she normally does. You could already see before the episode really got going that Gemma knew her secret wouldn't stay buried forever, especially after Abel blamed the fork ordeal on her, peoples suspicions would surely start to raise. Which they did.

We spend a lot of time this installment with Jax as he runs around from place to place trying to piece together the events that occurred the night Tara was killed. He first goes to see Unser, who seems to be playing his own little game, as he knows a lot more than he is letting Jax believe. Speaking of Unser I continue to fail to understand him, I never know what he might do or if he really cares about finding the truth behind Tara's death. He is a puzzle. I really am struggling to get his intentions. Unser does tell Jax that the chinese man Gemma, and Juice said killed Tara wasn't in the state. Jax then demands a meet with Juice so he could speak to him about what really happened. Wayne is hesitant to set one up, as he thinks Jax could hurt Juice, but then Jax plays the "Do you want the truth" card, which I think he has used a bit too much recently. Unser does give in though, and sets one up.

Before we got to see Juice, and Jax meet. We saw Juice get a confession out of Lin that it was in fact Barosky that ratted them out. Juice then decides to execute his plan by stabbing Lin in the throat. Lin has been a major player for seasons now, but I kind of figured once Juice had him tied up that Juice was never intended to let him go although when Juice agreed to let him go for the truth I was hoping he would be honorable, but a rat will always remain a liar, which he is.
Jax's conversation with Juice was definitely a highlight of the season for me, it was so compelling, and engaging to see a rat, and a broken man each come to terms with the their fates that lied ahead. It was an exceptional performance by Charlie Hunnam in the scene, it was an emotional punch in the gut for his character, and he gave a brilliant emotional response to the situation. Also how Hunnam portrayed Jax's anguish was exceptional. Theo Rossi also pulled of a great performance in the same scene, as Juice came to the realization about his fate after revealing all to Jax. I have to admit I thought Juice would lie, and protect Gemma or at least keep things hidden from him a little while longer. It was a great relief though for Juice once he unburdened himself, which you could see in a scene later with Unser and Jarry as he didn't seem to care about anything. He is finally free from the lies he had told.

It wasn't just Jax who learned the truth about Gemma, we also saw Nero receive a phone call from Jax, which we didn't actually here. This was a great way to show Nero's emotions which they did, his reaction was brilliant, it really brought out the best from Jimmy Suits. The scene also provided Nero with something to do, other than follow Gemma around. It was hard upon Nero learning the truth, and you could see that he wasn't ready to let her go. Even after all she has done, he still cares for her so much that he didn't tell Jax they met, and that he let her go. Chuckie also in the episode let her go. They both knew the club was looking for her, but they love her too much to see anything bad happen to her which is why they had to let her leave.
Katy Segal again stole the episode with her performance; her emotional goodbye with Nero was just the starting point to what was one of her strongest performances to date. She also said an emotional goodbye to her grandkids, which was actually really sad to see. I have to admit I did feel a bit sorry for her; she had everything, and now has nothing. On the other hand it's very hard to sympathise with her after she has caused everyone so much grief, and all the events that have occurred; Bobby dying, Tara dying, Abel becoming twisted is all her doing. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here, but it looks like from the promo for next week Unser helps her again. Is it just me or is anyone else getting sick of him running to Gemma's aid, I mean she isn't going to be with him which is what he is hoping.

Elsewhere in the episode, Jax after punching Unser gets an APB put out for him. This then took us to a high speed chase between Jax, and the cops that was accompanied by some perfectly chosen Jazz music. The club later meet him at a place owned by Alvarez, where Jax informs them of what he was up to, since he has been acting very edgy toward them all day. They all looked shocked, and stunned by the reveal, knowing part of Jax's family is to blame for all their pain. I really don't know how they will recover, I think the only way to move forward is if justice is served, but I am not sure Jax has what it takes to kill his mother. I think Jax will eventually forgive Gemma; as much as she deserves to pay I can't see him killing his mother, especially after what Nero said "A son killing his mother, Jax that's a wound to deep to heal".

I hope in the next episode we will see some resolution to what happens with Gemma, as we only have two episodes left, so the next one must surely be an explosive one.

Favorite Quotes

"I get the pain that you're in Jax, the damage that she's caused, its unbelievable. A son killing his mother; Jax that's a wound too deep to heal" Nero

"You see nothing makes sense to me Juice, is my kid delusional, cutting himself making up stories, or is he tormented trying to wrap his little mind around something horrible. You see every scenario seems insane to me. My son is twisted up, he just lost his mum, before I send in a team of shrinks to create deeper wounds I need to know the truth" Jax

"I'm glad he knows your his mum, it's the right thing, the right time" Gemma

Summary
In what was another brilliant episode to add to the series, the show is really setting itself up for an explosive finale. This episode was flooded with exceptional performances; to name a few Jimmy Suits, and Theo Rossi. It was the episode fans including myself had been waiting for, the moment Gemmas world collapses around her, and it didn't disappoint. I found Jax going to different people to learn the truth was very well done, and the scene with Nero on the phone was absolutely brilliant. It is such a shame we have to wait two weeks, but the penultimate episode will be on my birthday so I can only hope that it will be worth the wait!

As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!
