Monday 3/24/14 Metered Markets
“Dancing With the Stars” Remains a Healthy Option for ABC

NBC 7.5/12
CBS 4.7/ 7
Fox 3.8/ 6
CW 0.8/ 1

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Monday 3/25/13:
CW: +60, NBC: + 3, ABC: – 4, CBS: – 8, Fox: -14

———-

-Winners:
“Dancing With the Stars” (ABC), “The Voice” (NBC), “How I Met Your Mother” (CBS), “The Blacklist” (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
“Castle” (ABC)

-Fading:
“The Following” (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Star-Crossed” (CW), “The Tomorrow People” (CW), “Intelligence” (CBS)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC topped the Monday overnights, beating solid No. 2 NBC in households by 16 percent. But the home of “The Voice” will, of course, win the night in all the key young adult demographics.

Two-hours of “Dancing With the Stars” dominated the 8-10 p.m. block with a 9.8 rating/15 share in the overnights, peaking in the 9 p.m. half-hour with a 10.2/15. Comparably, this was right on par with the 10.0/15 on the year-ago evening and it bested competing “The Voice” on NBC (7.8/12) by 26 percent. Year-to-year, “The Voice” dipped by 10 percent (versus an 8.7/13 on 3/25/13). With Candace Cameron Bure and equally worthy Danica McKellar both competing, who the heck do you root for?

NBC’s “The Blacklist” finished first at 10 p.m. with its best household overnights – 7.0/12 – since the December 2, 2013 telecast. Comparably, that beat competing “Castle” on ABC (#2: 6.5/11) by eight percent, and its advantage in all the key demos will be significantly higher. A distant third in the hour was waiting-to-be axed drama “Intelligence” on CBS at a 3.3/ 6. Note to CBS: Put the new “CSI” spin-off in the Monday 10 p.m. hour next season.

With only one episode to go, “How I Met Your Mother” on CBS was on the map, with a third-place 5.8/ 9 at 8 p.m. (which could run neck-and-neck with “The Voice” for first among adults 18-49). Next on the Eye net was “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 5.1/ 8 at 8:30 p.m.), followed by “Mike & Molly” (#3: 5.5/ 8) and compatible “Mom” (#3: 5.0/ 8) from 9-10 p.m. If “The Big Bang Theory” does move back to Monday as expected next season, expect solid gains for CBS on the evening.

Elsewhere, Fox finished fourth care of already renewed drama duo “Bones” (#4: 4.1/ 6) and “The Following” (#4: 3.4/ 5), which declined by 23 percent from the 4.4/ 7 on the year-ago evening. And recent CW entry “Star-Crossed” and relocated “The Tomorrow People” scored an identical 0.8/ 1 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.

Top honors in late night remained in NBC’s favor with “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (3.4/ 9) and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” (1.6/ 6) from 11:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Comparably, Jimmy Fallon increased by 26 percent from Jay Leno on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 7 on 3/25/13), while Seth Meyers versus Fallon at 12:30 a.m. (1.4/ 5) was up by 14 percent. In other words, NBC’s revamped late night line-up is working quite well.

“The Late Show With David Letterman” on CBS finished second behind Jimmy Fallon, with a 2.6/ 7 in the overnights (up 14 percent year-to-year). And it led into a 1.1/ 4 for “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson,” which was on par with the year-ago evening. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC scored a 2.2/ 6 into a 1.4/ 5 for “Nightline” in the 12:30 a.m. half-hour.

“Last Call With Carson Daly” closed the night for NBC with a 0.9/ 4 at 1:30 a.m.

  1. Sad about TTP, yesterday's episode was great.
I hope HIMYM scores big next week. I don't expect it to beats it's highest rating, but I hope it at least hits a 5.0 or more.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I just hope Bones went up in the demos, even if it's only a tenth. Especially because I know next week is going to be awful.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The Blacklist is so good at retaining Voice's audience. It makes me happy. Ouch for Bones and Following. Will Sleepy Hollow be Following 2.0? HIMYM will score 4.8-5.0 next week, I'm sure of it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. TBL has done quite well. Still curious why NBC only ordered 22 episodes, but gave SVU 24 - it's not like they syndication gods demand it.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oh,Yes Blacklist!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Pretty good for abc and nbc (dwts should still be moved to a new night)
Good for himym, predicting a 5 next wk
Pretty bad for FOX, they need help

    ReplyDelete
  7. Why move DWTS to another night? They can't move it to Sunday, Wed or Thursday. Only leaves Monday and Tuesday. I suppose they could put it on Tuesday from 9-11, but they'd still have to fill Monday and move Agents (not a compatible lead-in at all).

    ReplyDelete
  8. It standard for new shows to give a back 9 order. And even give them 22 episode for the first few seasons. Veteran shows get 22 episode orders.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Great for HIMYM. I am really hopeful for the finale hitting 5.0 or close.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Several new series got additional orders in first season. CF got 24 last year; Arrow 23; 2BG 24; NG 24; POI 23 to name a few. CPD went from 13 to 15 after just a couple of episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 23 is standard for CW. It's not uncommon for mid season shows to get extra episodes. Like I said, new shows usually get 22 episode first seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  12. HIMYM: 3.4 A18 -34, 3.8 M18-34.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Damn, Castle hasn't hit a 2 for the last five episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. first half of the season was much more interesting than this one, which I find it boring and dull. Next episode looks horrible too. I don't know what the writers and AWM are doing with the show.

    ReplyDelete
  15. And, sadly, I don´t think it will hit a 2.0 this season anymore...maybe in the finale?:(

The nonsensical Lazarus case? Sorry, I love Stana but just because a scene is exhausting to the actor it doesn't make a good episode. Up till the ninja episode I thought they hit the low with how much they neglect even the basic logic in a CRIME drama, but then with the six-year-old-ninja-yakuza-enforcer AWM&Co managed to go beyond everything.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't know but the end of the episode sounded poor to me. I started watching The Blacklist and I can tell you one thing, this shows made Castle looks boring and slow. :/

    ReplyDelete
  18. You're kidding, right? The second half of the season is really great and the series didn't fell on the ratings until ABC put it against the Olympics and when they put against the Blacklist whithout a good lead-in (a rerun of Mixology really?).
So I know the series is on its 6th season and it's normal that it starts loosing viewers but ABC also made some bad decisions.
And honestly, when I look at all the series' rating, how many are still able to have 2 or more this day? Not that much. It's clear for me that people started to get tired with network series and goes to cable show.
And Castle with this kind of results is still the most watched series of ABC (even if that doesn't really matter) and it's up to ABC 18-49 ratings average.
Even if the results are lower, it's still OK.

  19. NO ONE FIND 2 BROKE GIRLS WERE NOT REBROADCAST ON THIS MONDAY? It's the new episode!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I tought 6x17 was a great episode from start to finish, don´t think it was a bad conclusion at all, because the ending, I´m sure, was a setup for more (and that´s why I liked the episode so much). As for The Blacklist, I never watched it, so won´t say nothing...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Great for The Blacklist! Almost back in the 3.0 range!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Starcrossed is doing better than tomorrow people!

    ReplyDelete
  23. TTP :0.3 -.80

    ITs dead

Well, i blame them for not making first half of the season as interesting as 2nd half

    ReplyDelete
  24. NOO TTP! Come on, you were so steady! And it was a pretty good episode last night!

    ReplyDelete
  25. if Sleepy Hollow has a drastic drop in writing quality like The Following, yes I can see that. And far too often the big hits they push experience a nosedive in cohesive story-telling, and its all shock value and special effects. I hope Sleepy doesn't follow the same pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  26. TTP is officially dead now!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Damn TTP. It was good knowing ya!

  30. Yesterday was a new episode of 2 Broke Girls, right?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Neither did I:)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Like @Maria Ferreira, like Castle usually does, the ending will definitely is abridge towards a future episode, which I think is episode 22 "Veritas".

    ReplyDelete
  33. it said 2 Broke Girls (R) before, i see it is fixed now

    ReplyDelete
  34. Still hoping for a 10-12 episode second season of TTP just to close the plot lines. Right now people are not watching cause they are sure its going to be canceled. No one wants to invest time in a dead show.

Oh, TTP... You're going to be missed. Maybe Robbie Amell can join his cousin on Arrow next season.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm glad too see that Intelligence is a flop ! I haven't seen it but I think it's theme (not the story or characters - I'm not dissing the fans!) is a lame (maybe a little updated from 2007) version of the awesome series CHUCK !

    ReplyDelete
  40. Excuses that don't spell the real problem with Castle. The stories in the second half have been uninteresting. I found 6x17 to be flat. The show has become predictable and very formulaic of procedural shows. That's not me making stuff up. That's the truth. The writing is killing the show. It has been since season five.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Only one episode went up against the Olympics Sherlock. And CTV's early showing didn't hurt the ratings. Writing is killing the show.

  43. tell me about it...and I do not watch TTP or Starcrossed but I love BATB so...
i wonder how TVD or arrow would do on monday nights, would they go down to 0.6 or less or would they only fall slightly?

    ReplyDelete
  44. the timeslot for starcrossed is slightly better - but numbers very similar

  45. RIP TTP. How the hell The Following got a renewal with those depleting ratings is a miracle.

  48. woww, poor CW on mondays's night. TPP looks really a goner now. Awesome for HIMYM!! And i hope TBBT goes for monday's night on CBS next season.
