Day 10: So we are one day into round 2 and we suddenly have a real shock contender for pushing to the latter stages of the competition. Glee earned over 2000 votes today alone for an 81% smashing of Veronica Mars, which never even looked like competing. As of today, only one other show has achieved 2000+ votes, and that's that one about an island and a plane crash. Don't remember the name. I still don't expect Glee to win, but it seems mighty popular, and found a big fan base voting for it today, so you never know. In the other battle, The Office saw off Arrested Development relatively comfortably with 64% of the votes, and should be a worthy competitor to Glee in Round 3.

Today is a big day. The overall biggest day of round 1 featured the shows up for voting for today, and it's going to be a thriller. Perhaps the record for most votes in a poll (currently standing at 3644) could be smashed today. We have Joss Whedon's Firefly, which brilliantly saw off popular action-thriller 24 in round one, taking on J.J.Abram's Fringe, which saw off the huge online fan-base of Legend of the Seeker in the second highest voted poll so far. That's gonna be huge. Also today we have the critically acclaimed The Wire taking on Buffy Slayer, The Mentalist in round 2. I for one was surprised to see Buffy be beaten so early, it was very popular in the nomination stage, and so The Wire has it's work cut out today. So if your fans of any of today's shows, you have to spread the word. Get the votes in. It's all that counts. At least then you can complain if your votes doesn't get through. Make it count. Let the battles begin!

The Wire vs. The Mentalist
The Wire

Seasons: 5 (Finished)
Previous Results: R1. WON vs. It's always Sunny in Philadelphia (66.55%)
Format: Drama
Synopsis: Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the illegal drug trade, the port system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."

The Mentalist

Seasons: 2 (Ongoing)
Format: Police Procedural/Drama
Synopsis: It follows the story of Patrick Jane, who aids the California Bureau of Investigation in homicide investigations with unorthodox ways.

The series' idea came to Bruno Heller, as he says, when he was driving around one day and found that there are psychics on almost every street. Bruno Heller who was not a believer of the idea thought it was interesting that so many people make a living out of this. The popular psychics sometimes really do have some interesting skills. This coupled with Heller's intention to create a show that is more positive than his previous show resulted in the creation of the show we know today as, The Mentalist.
The Mentalist is about Patrick Jane who is now a consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation- CBI (whose real life counter-part merged with another agency in 2007 to become, Bureau of Investigation and Intelligence [BII]). Patrick Jane was once a child psychic in a carnival and later went on to become more popular making TV appearances and giving private readings to high profile clients. Jane, of course, faked his psychic abilities. But he has finely honed skills in cold reading, hypnotism, pick-pocketing, as well as powerful skills of observation and a deep insight into the human psyche and behavior. When Jane talks about a ruthless, elusive serial killer on a talk-show, he inadvertently infuriated the killer who went on to teach Jane a lesson by murdering his family. This puts Jane on a path of redemption. He quits his psychic business, accepts that he was faking his abilities and begins to help the CBI to catch criminals with only one goal in mind- to catch and kill the person who murdered his family.
He is seen in the series using his mentalist abilities to play elaborate ruses and mind-games to catch the killer. This highly unorthodox methodology is frowned upon by his superiors and other units and sometimes even his own colleagues. But they all tolerate his eccentric behavior and sometimes questionable methods as he has an impeccable track-record of catching criminals.
Patrick Jane, around whom the series revolves, is essentially an easy-going guy who doesn't care for rules and someone who has made a conscious decision to remain positive and happy in life. But we can see his rather dark side whenever the team goes on the trail of Red John- the murderer of his family. We see that he is willing to go to any length, if it means he can catch Red John: threaten people, spy on state agents, break into places, manipulate people and even put himself in grave danger.

Thanks once again for voting and taking part in the Competition. Hope your doing well, and that your favourite shows are getting through. Comment away and lets see who grinds through today.
