The Simpsons - Renewed for two more Seasons

Longest. TV show. Ever.

Fox has ordered two more seasons of "The Simpsons" that will make the animated hit the longest-running series in primetime TV history.

The 44-episode pickup will bring the show to a whopping 493 episodes.

"Gunsmoke" has held the record as the longest-running series and was on the air for 20 years (airing on CBS from 1955 to 1975 with 635 episodes). "The Simpsons" and NBC's "Law & Order" have been closing in on the Western classic, with Fox's comedy tying "Gunsmoke" this year and "Order" currently airing its 19th season.

With this renewal, "The Simpsons" (which debuted in 1990) will easily take the lead. And with NBC shedding its 10 p.m. hour and the "L&O" flagship pulling modest numbers, the chances of the crime drama outlasting "The Simpsons" seems unlikely.

"The Simpsons" launched in 1990. Twelve years ago, the show surpassed "The Flintstones" as the longest-running animated series. Outside of ultra-competitive primetime, other programs have been on the air considerably longer. NBC's "Meet the Press" has been around since 1947. CBS' soap "Guiding Light" has been airing since 1952 and NBC's "The Tonight Show" has been in production since 1954.

True Blood Season 2 Spoilers

Carrie Preston in an interview on The Vault

On a possible romance between Arlene and Terry:
" I can’t really give away too much, but what I can say is that Arlene is not the type of woman who can be alone for very long."

And on Season 2:
"And without giving away anything, I can say that season 2 really strays far away from the second book, hardly anything like it. It’s just so far out there with more characters and going in different directions. Not much like the book at all.”

Pilot - Casting News - Various

Jimmy Wolk has landed the lead in ABC's untitled Daniel Cerone pilot, and Joel McHale has been cast as the lead on NBC's comedy pilot "Community," which Anthony and Joe Russo have signed on to direct.

Additionally, Jaime Ray Newman has landed one of the three leads in ABC's drama pilot "Eastwick," with Veronica Cartwright, who co-starred in the 1987 feature "The Witches of Eastwick," also cast in a supporting role.

In other pilot castings, Liza Lapira and Marc Blucas have joined ABC's drama pilot "See Cate Run," Dean Winters has been cast in ABC drama pilot "Happy Town," Aimee Garcia has joined NBC drama pilot "Trauma" and Matthew Yang King has been added to CBS drama "Washington Field."

The Cerone project, from ABC Studios, centers on a low-level detective (Wolk) whose genius 11-year-old brother helps him solve crimes. Wolk recently toplined the CBS movie "Front of the Class."

The Sony-produced "Community" is described as "Stripes" in a community college and centers on Jeff (McHale), a lawyer who is back at school after his college degree is deemed invalid.

Loosely based on the theatrical feature, "Eastwick" follows three young witches who come into their powers. Newman ("Made of Honor") will play one of them, Kat, a good-natured nurse and a mom of five kids. She is repped by Innovative and manager Joannie Burstein. Cartright is with Marshak/Zachary and Shadow.

The ABC Studios-produced "Cate" centers on C.C. (Amy Smart), a young prosecuting attorney who one day is going to be a serious contender for U.S. president. Lapira ("21") will play an attorney who works with C.C. and is her roommate. Blucas ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") will play a legendary campaign guru who sees C.C.'s potential.

In the mystery "Happy Town," about a small town rattled by the return of a serial kidnapper, Gersh-repped Winters will play a man whose daughter was kidnapped years ago.

On CBS Par's "Washington Field," about an elite FBI team, King will play the team's bomb expert.

On UMS' medical drama, Garcia, repped by Don Buchwald & Associates and attorney Lev Ginsberg, will play the newest member of an EMT team.

CBS and ABC cut back on Pilots

CBS and ABC -- two nets boasting the heftiest number of pilots this season -- have begun trimming their rosters.

Eye confirmed on Saturday that it was pushing the 20th Century Fox TV drama "Confessions of a Contractor."

Shawn Ryan, Richard Murphy and Jeff Okin are behind "Confessions," which is based on Murphy's novel about a blue-collar Los Angeles contractor who handles renovations for wealthy clients.

The "Confessions" pickup was cast-contingent -- and CBS decided not to go forward after a lead actor could not be found.

News comes as ABC has also pushed "Funny in Farsi," which was director and show runner contingent; and "Planet Lucy," which was cast contingent.

Studio execs had been bracing late last week for such a move, noting that both nets had perhaps ordered more pilots than they needed.

CBS orders Cop Drama

CBS has announced the first new series of the network's fall 2009 class: cop drama (shocker!) The Bridge.

The Eye has ordered 13 episodes of the procedural drama, which focuses on a charismatic union leader who is simultaneously battling criminals on the street while facing down corruption within the ranks of his own department. The show stars Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica, Smallville), Paul Popowich (Angela's Eyes), Inga Cadranel (Rent-a-Goalie) and two-time Emmy winner Stuart Margolin (The Rockford Files).

The Bridge marks the second recent partnership between CBS and CTV — Canada's largest privately owned English language broadcast network — which also co-produced Flashpoint, last summer's most watched original drama. Flashpoint currently wins its Friday timeslot.

The series' executive producers include former Toronto police union head Craig Bromell, Laszlo Barna (Da Vinci's Inquest), and Adam J. Shully (The Guardian). Production is scheduled to begin in Toronto in late spring.

Doctor Who - Comic coming this Month

IDW will release a special one-shot Doctor Who comic, "The Whispering Gallery," by artist Ben Templesmith and writers Leah Moore & John Reppion.

In "The Whispering Gallery," the TARDIS lands in a mazelike gallery filled with thousands of talking pictures, and the Doctor and Martha discover they've come across a planet where showing emotion has been outlawed. The inhabitants have good reason for their suppression, but it wouldn't be like the Doctor to leave them in fear of truly living.

Married writing team Leah Moore and John Reppion have been fans of Doctor Who and pitched IDW Publishing on their story idea for the classic British sci-fi hero after Leah had a dream about a two-page spread one night.

Moore and Reppion became involved in the project after being approached by artist Templesmith (30 Days of Night), an admirer of their work.

Doctor Who: The Whispering Gallery hits stands on Feb. 25.

NCIS - Three Leads cast in Spinoff

The team of naval investigators on the "NCIS" spinoff is coming into focus.

Louise Lombard, Peter Cambor and Daniela Ruah have been cast as leads in the hot CBS/CBS Par pilot, which will air as an episode of "NCIS" in the spring, just as the pilot for "NCIS" aired as an episode of "JAG."

The three would join Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J, who are still in negotiations for the other two leads in the spinoff.

Lombard will play Clara, a role perceived as the female lead on the ensemble drama. A former major in the military police, Clara is an intelligent, sharp investigator who can look after herself.

Cambor ("Notes From the Underbelly") will play the quick-witted Nate, the team's conscience and beating heart. Nate is an operational psychologist and a walking encyclopedia of American culture.

Ruah will play Kensi, a super bright young investigator who studied forensics and criminology in college.

Brit Lombard is joining the "NCIS" franchise after a stint on another hit CBS crime procedural, "CSI," where she played Detective Sofia Curtis for three years.

She also played the title lead in the ABC pilor "Judy Got a Gun."

Lombard is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment and U.K.'s United Agents.

More pilots greenlighted at NBC, ABC, CBS

Three more multicamera comedy pilots took off Thursday night.

NBC ordered an untitled family comedy from writer Justin Adler, ABC gave the thumbs-up to an untitled couples comedy from Jeff Strauss, and CBS greenlighted the female buddy comedy "Good Girls."

NBC's untitled Justin Adler comedy, from Sony and Tantamount, is a family show with adult siblings.

Family shows are hot at NBC this season, with the network also doing an hourlong pilot based on the 1980s movie "Parethood."

This is NBC's second pilot pickup from Sony following the network's decision not to go with the Sony-produced pilot "Lost in the '80s," which, like the Adler comedy, hailed from the Tantamount team of Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum.

The trio are exec producing the new pilot with the project's writer Adler.

The untitled Jeff Strauss comedy, from ABC Studios, examines marriage and parenthood seen through the eyes of three couples.

Strauss penned the pilot and is exec producing with Acme's Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis.

Hanel and Schultheis are already in the multicamera comedy business with ABC, which recently picked up the duo's MRC-produced comedy series "Surviving Suburbia," originally targeted for the CW.

"Good Girls," from CBS Par and Katalyst, was written by Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer ("The New Adventures of Old Christine"), who exec produce with Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg and Karey Burke.

It centers on two women and childhood friends who are trying to reinvent themselves after making some youthful mistakes.

The Big Bang Theory - Casting News

Thanks to SortofBeautiful for the heads up.

This has been a big week for The Big Bang Theory's nerd herd. First, they score their best ratings ever, and now they're getting to rub elbows with frakkin' Summer Glau!

The Sarah Connor Chronicles siren will play herself in the March 9 episode, the set-up of which already has me ROFWLing: A train trip to San Francisco takes a major detour when Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz, and Raj discover that their favorite sci-fi actress in all the land is on board. But the fanboy frenzy quickly gives way to a heated mass debate (tee-hee) when they realize one of them will have to approach her -- but who?

It's not too difficult to figure out how this cheeky cross-over came about, provided you know this little detail: The Big Bang Theory and Sarah Connor Chronicles (which returns this Friday) are both produced by Warner Bros.

This is what we in the TV biz refer to as extremely positive synergy.

Law and Order SVU - Carol Burnett to Guest

TV comedy legend Carol Burnett will take a turn for the dramatic in a March episode of "Law & Order: SVU."

Burnett will guest-star in the March 17 episode, NBC says, playing a former dancer who's connected to the murder of a young couple. It will be her first TV appearance since she guested on "Desperate Housewives" in 2006.

"Having Carol Burnett on 'SVU' is a dream come true," executive producer Neal Baer says. "When you grow up wanting to be a writer, you can count on one hand the actors you'd give anything to work with. Carol Burnett is my thumb."

Burnett is a six-time Emmy winner, with honors for her long-running CBS series "The Carol Burnett Show," an early 1960s special with Julie Andrews, and most recently, for guest-starring on "Mad About You" in the 1996-97 season. She says she's looking forward to appearing on "SVU."

"Every time I mention to someone that I'm about to work on 'Law & Order: SVU,' they immediately say 'Oh, that's my favorite show!'" she says. "I'm so glad that they all share my opinion."

Criminal Minds - Casting News

Finally, I have a bone to throw all you inconsolable Moonlight fans.

The dead drama's central blood sucker, Alex O'Loughlin, is returning to CBS in an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The change-of-pace hour, which is tentatively scheduled to air in April, will track a case from the POV of a serial killer, played by O'Loughlin.

This is O'Loughlin's first leap back into TV since Moonlight was laid to rest nine months ago. At press tour last month, CBS president Nina Tassler -- who signed the Aussie hunk to a development deal in August -- hinted that we may see him back on the network "soon" in a new project.

What say you, Moonlight fans? Happy to see O'Loughlin sinking his teeth into another meaty TV role -- even if he's not literally doing so? Sound off below!

Law and Order SVU - Casting Scoop

How's this for a Law & Order twist: Benson and Stabler had a secret love affair 20 years ago that resulted in a son -- and we're about to meet him!

Just kidding... about the love child part.

While it's true that SVU is welcoming a new, young male character -- played by Noel Fisher, late of FX's The Riches -- he's not the product of a torrid circa 80s B/S romp. Rather, sources confirm to me exclusively that Fisher has been cast as a rookie crime scene sleuth, a nerdy, eager beaver-type who is in awe of Benson and Stabler.

He's slated to appear in at least four episodes, the first of which will air in April.

Sorry about the bait-and-switchy lead, but there's only so much you can do with "new crime scene guy," you know?

CW picks up 'Vampire Diaries' pilot

The CW is looking to take a bite out of the vampire craze, picking up a pilot based on the "Vampire Diaries" series of books.

Also on Thursday, the weblet greenlighted the Washington, D.C.-set drama "The Body Politic," while CBS ordered the comedy pilot "The Big D."

"Vampire Diaries" comes from Alloy Entertainment, the same shingle whose past book series led to the Dub's series "Gossip Girl" and "Privileged."

Originally published in 1993 - which, as the CW took pains to note, was years before Stephanie Meyer launched her "Twilight" book franchise - "Vampire Diaries" revolves around a young woman whose torn between two vampire brothers. The The brothers - one good, one evil -- are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.

The CW has reunited with "Scream," "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Dawson's Creek" scribe Kevin Williamson, who last produced "Hidden Palms" for the net, to exec produce and write. Julie Plec ("Kyle XY") is also on board to write and EP.

Warner Bros. TV, where Alloy (which owns the rights to "Vampire Diaries") is set up, is the studio; Alloy's Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy are also exec producers.

A 4-book novel series, "Vampire Diaries" was originally penned by L.J. Smith. After the success of the "Twilight" series, Morgenstein suggested to HarperCollins, the publisher of the "Diaries" books, that they should re-release the books with new covers.

Fans of Legend of the Seeker have two big reasons to raise their swords and hurrah. One, the syndicated action-adventure series (based on the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind) has been picked up for a second season. But also, a Legend-ary faceoff soon will come to fruition.

Asked to look ahead to Season 2, Craig Horner, who stars as Richard Cypher/the Seeker, says, "I don't know if they'll follow the second [Sword of Truth] book at all, because they already drew from the first book and took some stories and characters from future books. Now that we've got our own reins on the show, we can kind of do what we want."

One thing viewers will be treated to this season is a meeting between Richard and Darken Rahl, his arch enemy. "We've got two interactions actually," says Horner, "and it's kind of cool" — especially since Horner and Rahl's portrayer, Craig Parker, had yet to share a scene.

On a less-antagonistic front, Seeker viewers are just as — if not more — vested in what's to transpire between Richard and the mysterious Kahlan Amnell (Bridget Regan), with whom he shares a forbidden love (or at least mild lust). "Maybe we'll get together, maybe we won't," Horner hedges. "I just hope they keep it going. That's the kind of thing that drew me to shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where for those first few seasons it was Buffy and Angel, on and off, on and off."

Of course, much action is on the menu as the Seeker's journeys continue. And that means the occasional Band-Aid for Horner. "There's not a day I go home without some kind of cut or bruise, but it's all part of the work!" he shrugs. "We have stunt doubles do [the dangerous scenes], but the fights are really me, so you get your occasional nick."

True Blood - E!Online Article

Could True Blood's love triangle of Sookie Stackhouse, Bill and Eric be heating up?

The Golden Globe-winning HBO drama returns this summer for another round of bloody, bitey Louisiana sexcapades, and everyone is dying to know what's going down in Bon Temps.

How will Sookie cope with news about Bill's newly made and superannoying vampire tootsie Jessica?

What's up with Tara and Sam: Are they friends with benefits, genuine lovers or none of the above?

And most important of all: Is Lafayette dead—or undead?!

Want to know what's to come? We've got answers from the cast about all your burning Q's...

So will Eric break up Sookie and Bill? Stephen Moyer tells me, "I couldn't possibly say. I honestly don't know, but I think that there will be all the conflict that there needs to be to make it a great frisson."

What about that other third party, Bill's baby-vamp Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll)? Moyer teases, "She is nuts—and fantastic."

As for our other faves, Nelsan Ellis isn't sharing anything about Lafayette's fate, telling fans, "They have to wait and see," but he's definitely up for more Blood if it's offered. Says Nelsan, "Absolutely, yeah, I'll come back. I'll take the paycheck." Indeed, Nelsan's as invested as the rest of us in the question of whether or not Lafayette lives or dies, saying, "I love the fact that people are invested in this story. I like Lafayette, and I like that people like him."

Last but not least, Tara is still struggling to find her way in life. Michelle Forbes' slinky, sneaky maenad is certainly suspicious but Rutina Wesley says she may not be all bad, telling us, "She saved my life, basically." As for Tara's love life, the thing with Sam is not totally off the table: "[Sam and Tara have] a complicated relationship, and Sam still kind of has that little thing for Sookie. But Tara loves her some Sam—so we'll see."

Should Tara and Sam be together? Are you Team Eric or Team Bill? Could you live with a True Blood that didn't have any Lafayette? Post in the comments!

True Blood returns to HBO in June or July for season two.

NCIS - Casting News

Thanks to Jenn for the heads up.

It looks like the new NCIS is poised to far surpass its recruiting goals.

CBS declined to comment but multiple sources confirm that Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J are in final talks to headline the Eye net's forthcoming NCIS spin-off. The 38-year-old O'Donnell would play Callen, a role previously described as "a human Transformer who can change personas as easily as you or I change clothes." The 41-year-old LL, meanwhile, is circling the role of Sam Hanna, an ex-Navy SEAL who recently completed stints in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

O'Donnell and LL would be the first actors to climb aboard the high profile project; four other roles are still being cast. Once assembled, the new team will be introduced in an episode of NCIS to air later this season before being launched into their own show next fall.

What do you think? Are Meredith's veterinarian ex and the onetime rapper the right guys to lead NCIS 2.0? Comment away!
