Thanks to Jovan for the heads up.
The new broadcast development season is picking up where the old one left off. After movie remakes made a very strong showing last pilot season, with five pilot and four series pickups — Fox’s Minority Report, CBS’ Rush Hour and Limitless and ABC’s Uncle Buck — one of the first projects put in development for next season is another movie reboot. Fox has given a script order to Urban Cowboy, a drama based on the 1980 Paramount romantic drama starring Debra Winger and John Travolta.
Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) is on board to write and direct the potential pilot for Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox TV, which first teamed up for upcoming Fox drama Minority Report. Brewer will executive produce with the film’s producer Robert Evans and Sue Naegle. Chris Levinson will executive producer and serve as showrunner under her overall deal with 20th TV. The project, first reported by Variety, is described as a modern reimagining of the movie. Fueled with energetic music, it follows star-crossed young lovers Sissy and Bud as they pursue their dreams and passions through the dust of the rodeo, the grime of the oil refineries, the sweat of line-dancing in honky tonks and the glamour of modern Texas. It’s about family legacies, starting over, finding true love and the American dream.
