The Mentalist - Episode 7.01 - Nothing But Blue Skies - Review

Welcome back Mentalistas! The final season of The Mentalist has begun in a very sweet way with Jane and Lisbon as a couple, and a classic Jane, always at his best with his mind tricks. As I previously anticipated, Nothing But Blue Skies opens two weeks later the event of the six season finale.

Jane and Lisbon have enjoyed their time together as a couple - he brings her coffee, she thinks about change her stuff in her house (out with the old and in with the new!), he late surprise her with an origami (a parallel with the Pilot). But there's one little problem: she wants to hide their relationship to their collegues, at least for the moment. Ironic how Abbott calls her on the phone and she denies about Jane's whereabouts in the same moment when their boss calls him searching for Lisbon. Looking at Jane's face he seems to scream: Hey, I want to say to everyone how much I love this woman next to me! If you think about Jane's past and how hard was for him to let himself free from his emotions, this is a big change. Now, he has the chance to say to the world he's ready to love again. On the other hand, Lisbon is not insecure. Maybe this is the first time she has a serious relationship and doesn't want to mix private and work life.

On the crime scene, Lisbon finds Cho first looking at a man being shot on the floor, after fallen off his cycle. Jane approaches next, eating and hugging his collegue, almost ignoring Lisbon - he's all lovely to everyone, too bad Cho still thinks Jane and Lisbon are like brother and sister. As much as they want to keep their relationship secret, you know Abbott is the only one to suspect the two of them. When Jane is missing, Lisbon is too. Go figure!

As you know, Emily Swallow left the series and the writers justified her departure with a transfer. Wylie gives Lisbon the message Kim Fischer left for her ending with a "Good luck with Jane." Beside Abbott, she's have known about the two lovebirds for a very long time.

Michelle Vega makes her first appearence as series regular and she surely catches Wylie's attention as she walks out the door. Jane's already got the type: good student, following the rules, and she can't understand how Jane's unusual plans work. It's worthless trying to explain because she needs to watch them live on the field. Despite her beauty look as the freshman college girl, Vega is a tough one and reminds me Grace Van Pelt. Plus, Cho's gonna be her mentor and I already like this.

Crime of the week involved an undercover agent name Geist. He saw something he wasn't supposed to see, so he got killed. Detective Ken Spackman joins the investigaton and his arrogance annoys Jane - especially since he bothers his girlfriend, Lisbon. Also, he doesn't approve Jane's methods. But even if Jane's in love, his classic methods to solve the cases can't be unnoticed. In order, to solve Geist's murder, they need to solve the kidnapping and the murder of a 12-year-old boy too. Two crimes committed by the same person: Mr Hunston. He kidnapped the boy, Geist recognized him, so he got killed. Also, Jane's abilities to read Tish's expression were priceless: only by moving his hand on a map and looking at her face, he was able to find the place where they hide the guns.

Marcus Pike. "He'll understand", said Lisbon in the season finale. "So it's you and her", he replied to Jane in the season premiere. I was impressed by Pike's still posture. No hurt feelings outside, he's calm while confronting Jane, till he asks the impossible question that, I think, it would be this season's subplot: what is Jane offering to Lisbon besides Patrick Jane? Does he have plans? Of course, Pike was a safe bet for Lisbon. He was willing to offer her everything in the world, but she left him for Jane. Later, Jane tells Lisbon about his chat with Pike. He has no plans, but they agree to live for the moment. And the last scene speaks for itself: he surprises her, again. He's offering himself to Lisbon, and I personally think Patrick Jane is enough for her right now.

What did you think about the seventh season premiere of The Mentalist? Did anyone noticed the Game of Thrones's reference with Pedro Pascal's hairstyle? Share your thoughts below.
