CBS, as expected, won the first Tuesday of the 2014-15 season in the household overnights, besting No. 2 NBC by 25 percent. And, yes…”NCIS: New Orleans” is a flawless fit out of parent “NCIS.” But the home of “The Voice,” NBC, should have no trouble taking the evening in adults 18-49 and all the key young adult demographics. And Fox will have to address the leak it has sprung with so-called social experiment “Utopia.”
Tops for the night was the 12th season-premiere of “NCIS,” which scored an 11.0 rating/18 share in households at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was 12 percent below the 12.5/20 on the year-ago evening (which translated into 20.02 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/11 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). Next was the series-premiere of “NCIS: New Orleans” at a dominant 10.5/16 at 9 p.m., which was seven percent above the year-ago season-opener of former time period occupant “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.8/15 on 9/24/13). Comparably, retention for “NCIS: New Orleans” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “NCIS” (11.2/18) was a stellar 94 percent.
At 10 p.m. on CBS was the fourth season-premiere of drama “Person of Interest” at an also first-place 6.6/11, but that initial overnight household rating was 16 percent below the 7.9/14 for the year-ago season-opener.
On NBC, two more hours of “The Voice” scored a healthy 8.5/13 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m., which will clearly dominate demographically. Relax NBC…the singing competition is still clearly resonating. And “The Voice” led into the third season-premiere of “Chicago Fire” at a second-place 5.5/ 9 at 10 p.m., which should also have no trouble leading the time period in the key demos. Year-to-year, “Chicago Fire” was right on par with its opening overnights (which translated into 8.90 million viewers and a 2.7/ 8 among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data, last year).
Over at ABC, another Tuesday night live results show for “Dancing With the Stars” was on the map with a third-place 7.0/11 from 8-9 p.m., which was just nine percent below the 7.7/12 in the overnights for the series-premiere of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” one year earlier. Next Tuesday, new ABC sitcoms “Selfie” and “Manhattan Love Story” debut in the 8 p.m. hour.
Next on ABC was the sophomore season-premiere of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a very disappointing (and third-place) 3.8/ 6 at 9 p.m. Comparably, this was 29 percent below the series-premiere of sitcoms “The Goldbergs” (6.0/ 9 on 9/24/13) and failed “Trophy Wife” (4.7/ 7) on the year-ago evening in this hour. It was 51 percent below its year-ago series launch. And overnight retention for “SHIELD” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Dancing With the Stars” (7.3/12) was only 52 percent. While the variation between the two shows will clearly be closer demographically, ABC cannot be too pleased.
In time period-premiere news, ABC drama “Forever” opened with a third-place 4.2/ 7 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which was actually 20 percent above the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” (3.5/ 5). And this was 35 percent above the debut of failed drama “Lucky 7” on the year-ago evening (3.1/ 5 on 9/24/13), which lasted for two episodes. But “Forever” was 19 percent below its Monday 10 p.m. preview this week (5.2/ 9) out of “Dancing With the Stars.” And that translated into only a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). In other words, don’t get too used to “Forever.”
Elsewhere, “Utopia” on Fox sunk to a miniscule 1.5/ 2 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was 21 percent below the already abysmal 1.9/ 3 one week earlier. And it trailed year-ago comedies “Dads” (2.8/ 5 on 9/24/13) and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (3.1/ 5) by 35 percent. Chances are the network will axe the Tuesday edition of “Utopia” and burn it off on Friday, where it is also floundering.
Minus any lead-in support, Fox 9-10 p.m. comedies “New Girl” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “The Mindy Project” (1.7/ 3) dipped from the year-ago evening (“New Girl”: 3.1/ 5, “The Mindy Project”: 2.4/ 4) by 35 percent and 29 percent, respectively. Yes…the lead-in still matters. And The CW, which is not being aggressive this week, capped off the night with encore telecasts of “Arrow” (#5: 0.6/ 1) and “Supernatural” (#5: 0.5/ 1).

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteJust looked at last seasons raitings forr SHIELD it did a 3.6/8 a couple of eps and it averaged out to a 2.0 in the demo . I'll wait for the demo before diss missing it's hopes for a third season after the first episode. Besides the rest of abc's lineup has yet to premiere

Shield scored a 4.7 a year ago on its debut and DWTS will be very lucky to even crack a 2.0 for yesterday. So the fact that in the overnights DWTS is just 9% below Shield's year ago debut should tell you that these numbers are very unreliable.
We may need to panic in an hour, but for now, let's not give this any more credit than it deserves.
Forever is such a good show, I know they all comparing to already existing shows, and since I don't watch any procedural shows Im sticking with this as long as it last, and above all I love Ioan as the enigmatic Henry, the acting is good and the main characters are very likeable all...starting with Hirsch and the dynamic relationship with Henry which is kind of odd.... the show is starting to have a following and the good word of mouth might help the show contrary to other low rated shows. Here for hope this is a very good series, hope they give it a try!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. It's a truly special show with fun characters, deep stories, great acting, music, cases... plus, the stuff it's dealing with is actually very relevant (it deals with post-9/11 and surveillance states in a fascinating, unique and intelligent way. :)

ReplyDeleteThe key here is waiting. Remember when Berman said that Revenge got a 1.8 on early households and ended up having 5 million viewers and a 1.3? Things like that happen, so while early households are usually a good indicator, you can never really depend on them, things can change a lot when the real numbers come out.
ReplyDeleteAs long as it stays around a 1.4, I'm not sure ABC will cancel it right away. It has bigger problems on its hands, and if the show can stabilize, perhaps it could become a utility player like Castle.

ReplyDeleteThere are a few shows for which I have decided to be admittedly very optimistic this year (not even necessarily shows that I watch, simply shows that I think are very well positioned ratings wise). The 100, The Goldbergs, Shield, How to Get Away with Murder and Mom are some of them.
ReplyDeleteSo I will continue to wait for the final numbers here .This is a show that often adjusted up even two tenths (and ABC had two tenths upwards adjustments for all of its hours anyway). So if it does, let's say, a 2.2 or 2.3, it could finish the day with a 2.4 or 2.5 which would be very good. Let's wait and see.
They really slacked off on promotion all summer, then suddenly started bombarding us with endless promotional material in the last week before the premiere. Lame.

Anyway, even if it does come back to a 2.0 that's still around what it did on spring and so far the show has been stable. I know it's a premiere episode and it should do higher, but maybe SHIELD is the show that can run within the range of 1.8-2.1 the whole season and that's enough for ABC

ReplyDeleteWhat? It's tied in to numerous Marvel movies and has instant name recognition. Regardless of how much ABC promotes it, it's a freaking Marvel TV show and every other month has some silly Marvel movie coming out. Excuses, excuses.

ReplyDeleteI've never watched New Amsterdam (might have been before I really got into TV?) so I come into this show with this show feeling like a different spin to a typical procedural show, which I appreciate. I only watch procedurals that are a bit different in some way (Sherlock in the way he solves crimes, Person of Interest for growing of complex story, etc.).

ReplyDeleteYes I am, also on the FB page which on Saturday was 170,000 likes prior to the premier now is almost 300,000 likes pretty impressive for a show like this...an not a negative comment about, so people that are watching are liking it, always comparing it to Sherlock, New Amsterdam, NCIS Castle, Mentalist, but I think its much different none of those shows have attracted me enough to follow a procedural show as this one did.

ReplyDeleteI think that ABC should move Castle to tuesdays at 10 and Forever to mondays. It will give Forever a better chance. DWTS is still better lead-in then Shield. I don't watch Shield, but come on, last year it was barely able to pull 2s in spring. Doubt it gonna be better this year. Castle will hold up on its own, but I can't say the same for Forever.

And I liked the twist of the eternal life into a procedural present day show....and been so thrilled about this show ever since I knew about it and didn't disappointed me. I don't watch procedural shows at all they are so boring IMO.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping it manages to squeeze by renewals though not expecting it (I expected likely cancellation going into this show just because of the last minute promoting and how they chose a boring sneak peek when they first released a clip early on).

I think it was in 2007 or 2008. I just discovered it last year and watched all episodes in a day. It was a nice show, I don't understand why FOX shut down production before it even premiered.

ReplyDeleteI don't do that type of downloading. Maybe I'll purchase someday but unlikely. I have soooo many shows it's hard to keep up in the fall/spring sometimes.
I know. They waited till the last week or two before the season airs to even show new or decent promo's for it. How did they expect people to watch it and get excited if I barely even saw an ad for it on abc? I saw one on CTV which is a canadian channel but rarely the ABC version of the promo.
ReplyDeleteLet's wait for the demo numbers before jumping to conclusions. Forever could have done better than monday (people are predicting a 2 for Shield). I think DWTS skews a little old so last night's demo was low compared to the total viewers, MAYBE tonight can be a little better, even if the overnights are lower.

Chicago Fire matched last year's premiere rating. NBC must be over the moon with its current ratings!

I'm not so pessimistic about Sundays yet, OUAT and Revenge got a fair promotion compared to SHIELD's poor promotion, so they may still do good.
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me is that they didn't spend almost any time at all promoting Resurrection! It did well and it could have been easily their biggest asset this season.
the problem with abc is that they barely promoted enough, especially since it was moving to a new timeslot. if abc gave it just a little more promotion in the summer then i can guarantee that it would premiered something like a 2.5. all shows are supposed to rise in their premieres and start settling down like around the third or fourth week.

you got to take into consideration that resurrection kept dropping every week until its finale. which is not a good sign, i think that abc kind of lost hope of it.

I know, but it doesn't have to work that way for every show, there's plenty of shows that premiere to the same levels they had on Spring and dip just a bit, those are the reliable players. SHIELD will have to prove if it has become a solid player or if it will massively drop from here onwards, but I think it's the first one
ReplyDeleteA 1.9 for shield isn't bad, it'll probably adjust up to 2.0 in finals like usual, with the premier of the NCIS New Orleans pilot, which will probably shed viewers I call it a win this week
ReplyDeleteIt's completely hilarious that people thought AoS was going to see an increase and then base that on why the rating is bad.
ReplyDeleteThere was too much bad word of mouth about AoS first part of the season so the average viewer wasn't going to invest time to get caught up with it. This rating is inline with the last half of the season which indicates a very steady loyal fanbase.
AoS will fluctuate between 1.8-2.2 all season.
Hell I'll take that, that is still better then the majority of abc's drama slate outside of #tgit or whatever
ReplyDeleteIf Forever keeps up numbers like that, it'll almost certainly be renewed. Not hugely impressive by any means, but it's basically double what ABC had in the spot last season.

ReplyDeleteStill, it ended on a 2.1 which is quite good for ABC; since the show has 8 episodes is still technically a freshman and ABC could have spent some time promoting it as such to get around high 2 levels (or mid 2s at least)

I doubt that the competition of The Blacklist and NCIS:LA will do anything to improve the ratings. They should give it the Ressurection slot on Sunday.

Ouch for AoS, hate to say it but I'm afraid they made a huge mistake with the first half of season 1. The second half was great but it took me a lot of convincing to give the show a second show. And I'm a huge Marvel fanatic.
Part of the issue I see with the show is the lack of heroes, I know that this isn't the point of the show but it is very much something people associate with Marvel.
Bringing in a second rate superhero as a regular would probably manage to help the show out.
How about Justice or Speedball?
Actually we don't know how many viewers Forever lost since the first ep was available online for a couple weeks. I do hope that it can maintain 1.7, but I am doubtful.

ReplyDeleteI was expecting for AoS to fall, but not by this much. I'm not surprised though, considering:
ReplyDelete1. The first half of season one got terrible reviews.
2. The show only picked up once Captain America 2's twist could be used.
3. The writers and actors couldn't take criticism. I remember being called an idiot and a loser for not liking the show those first 12 or so episodes.
4.The new time-slot. What the hell? A Marvel show at 9 o'clock after DWTS? Those two shows do not go well together. Put AoS back at 8 and the ratings will rise .1 or .2.
5. I didn't see much advertising for the show for the new season (all of ABC's ad money was spent on OUAT's Frozen story), and the ads I did see were kind of bad. Just lame Coulson speeches and cheesy tone.
All of that being said... that premiere was fricking awesome. None of the characters annoyed me. the writing, pacing, and tone was much better than usual. As someone who was very critical of the first season, I'm actually excited for this show now. Of course, now that I like it, it's ratings are bad.
I don't think Marvel will let this show die though. It's their flagship tv series, them staking their mark on television, even if ratings the ratings bomb they can easily move it to Netflix with the rest of their series.
Nothing I really care about on Tuesdays except for Sons (which I don't have to worry about) and The Mindy Project.. sucks to see Mindy sink so low, because while the show can be very uneven last night was actually a great episode. I really don't know how they'll make it to S4, but Fox doesn't have much else to go on right now.
ReplyDeleteCBS really has good number for its drama premieres! Let's see how Stalker does next week but I say that in three weeks Scorpion, NCIS: New Orleans and Stalker get a full season. And Madam Secretary might even have a shot at a full season as well!
