Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

Wednesday 3/04/14 Metered Market Ratings
Only Fox Down Year-to-Year

Household
Rating/Share
Fox 7.0/11
CBS 6.4/10
ABC 4.2/ 7
NBC 3.9/ 6
CW 1.5/ 2

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 3/05/13:
NBC: +44, CW: +36, CBS: +28, ABC: +20, Fox: -18

———-

-Winners:
“Survivor” (CBS), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “CSI” (CBS)

-Down But Still Dominant:
“American Idol” (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Mixology” (ABC), “The Tomorrow People” (CW)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
Two more hours of “American Idol” proved victorious for Fox, but a 7.0 rating/11 share in the household overnights was still a loss of 18 percent from the 8.5/13 on the year-ago evening. With “The X Factor” history and so many other weak spots on the schedule to worry about, there is every reason to believe tired “Idol” will return next season.

In week two news, ABC sitcom “Mixology” dipped by 11 percent from its disappointing week-ago opener, with a 3.2/ 5 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, that was 11 percent below year-ago occupant “Suburgatory” (3.6/ 6 on 3/06/13, which was below average due to leading out of an encore of “Modern Family”). And the retention for “Mixology” out of a 6.4/10 for “Modern Family” at 9 p.m. was only 50 percent. Unfortunately, “Mixology” is not an improvement from recent failed entry “Super Fun Night.”

“Mixology” led into sophomore drama “Nashville” at a last-place 3.5/ 6 at 10 p.m., which was a six percent improvement over the lackluster 3.3/ 6 in the overnights one week earlier. Given ABC’s current freshman drama series woes, another season of “Nashville” looks like a safe bet.

Earlier in the evening on the alphabet net was always reliable “The Middle” at a third-place 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m., followed by “Suburgatory” at a modest 3.7/ 7 at 8:30 p.m. (#3).

On CBS, veteran “Survivor” rose to a 6.1/10 in the 8 p.m. hour (#2), which increased by seven percent from its two episode week-ago season-opener. Comparably, this was on par with the year-ago edition themed “Caramoan.” Next was “Criminal Minds” at a consistent 7.0/11 (#2) at 9 p.m., which only trailed the second half of “American Idol” by one-tenth of a rating point, followed by granddaddy “CSI” at a dominant 6.1/10 at 10 p.m.

Elsewhere, on the fence sophomore NBC drama “Revolution” perked up week to week by nine percent, with a fourth-place 2.5/ 6 at 8 p.m. And it led into a 4.3/ 7 for “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 p.m. (#4) and a 3.9/ 7 for “Chicago PD” at 10 p.m. (#2), which were both below average. The CW capped off the evening with dramas “Arrow” (#5: 1.9/ 3) and “The Tomorrow People” (#5: 1.0/ 2). Effective on Monday, March 17th at 9 p.m. (and in place of “Beauty and the Beast”) will be relocated “The Tomorrow People” (which is unlikely to benefit out of failing “Star-Crossed”).

In late night, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” was down but still dominant with a 3.3/ 9 from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., which was 21 percent below the 4.2/11 for Jay Leno on the year-ago evening. Next was “The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS at a 2.5/ 6 (+14 percent from the year-ago evening), followed by “Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC at a 1.9/ 5 (-10 percent).

Tops from 12:30-1:30 a.m. was “Late Night with Seth Meyers” at a 1.6/ 6, followed by “Nightline” on ABC (1.3/ 4) and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (1.2/ 4). Carson Daly on NBC scored a typical 1.0/ 4 in the overnights in the 1:30 a.m. half-hour.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

  1. Hope Revolution didn't go down.........

  2. Arrow and TTP both seem down from last week. Too bad. TTP even seems to have the lowest HH rating yet :(

  3. Pablo Troncoso6 March 2014 at 14:29

I think Berman meant to write 3.5 for Revolution not 2.5, as it is up from last week which was a 3.2. Hope this means the demos can go back up to 1.4-1.5 (1.6 would be extremely unlikely, but it would make me happy).
Arrow seems to be down from last week, but one has to judge the demos first.
Hope The Middle does better in the demos than last week

I would like to see both Nashville and Revolution get renewed but think only one will survive so any bets on which show will make it ?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Rebecca Forest6 March 2014 at 14:34

Arrow started out strong but relies too much on flashbacks which is killing this show for me :-(

    ReplyDelete
  6. Revolution! Those 1.3's were getting scary!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Then you probably should stop watching now if you think the flashbacks are going to stop, they are confirmed to be a series thing and aren't going anywhere anytime soon!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Bryan Champion6 March 2014 at 14:35

CSI and Criminal Minds still strong, we can be sure CBS is going to keep it next season at the same timeslot !

    ReplyDelete
  9. Go Revolution, fight for that renewal!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Rebecca Forest6 March 2014 at 14:44

Maybe tptb need to rethink that decision because judging by viewer comments more and more the flashbacks are turning people off hence the drop in the ratings so not everyone is captivated by them. After all Lost was another series which deteriorated due to them !

    ReplyDelete
  11. What makes you think only one? It's not the same network. Anyway I think Nashville has a good shot but I'm very torn about if that's a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Since CBS will have to make changes on Monday, Tuesday (NCIS: LA is definitely moving), Thursday and Sunday, I imagine they will keep Wed and Fri in tact. CBS does not like shifting a lot of things around, but with HIMYM going, Monday at 10 a disaster and the Thursday comedies failing, they will have to adjust.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Rebecca Forest6 March 2014 at 14:48

I really enjoy Nashville and Avery/Juliet and Deacon/Rayna rock but Revolution has improved immensely in Season 2 and Monroe and Miles are awesome !

    ReplyDelete
  14. Rebecca Forest6 March 2014 at 14:49

I agree! Last night was not a great episode but overall the series has been impressive so far in Season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rebecca Forest6 March 2014 at 14:52

NCIS LA will not move ! CBS has a winning combination and powerhouse duo in that time slot so I cannot see them changing this dynamic !

    ReplyDelete
  16. Amen to that!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It needs to!
And I feel like it's just gotten interesting! ( though I haven't had the time to watch yesterday's episode)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wouldn't worry until we see the demos. Arrow could have gone up in those. I've heard a lot of positive word of mouth about the show this season (I don't watch - not because I dislike it, I just don't have time).

    ReplyDelete
  19. May is when we hear of a shows fate, but what about a series pick-up? I wanna know about The Flash!

    ReplyDelete
  20. It will be after they air Flash, after an original Arrow (i think it will be after Arrows 20th episode)

    ReplyDelete
  21. upfronts generally, unless a show is given a straight to series pickup bypassing the normal screening process.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nope, they decided to focus on a full pilot. So he wont be showing up on that ep. They announced some time ago. Last nights ep was great! Did u see the pony tailed blonde? Harley Quinn maybe!?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lost's problem wasn't in the flashbacks, it was poor storytelling from Season 4 onwards.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And yet he will not bother to edit his mistake. That's were he looses credibility with me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think they're going with that idea anymore. They had planned for the 20th episode of Arrow to be a Flash episode but decided it was better to just go with a traditional Pilot episode. Barry could show up before the end of season 2, who knows, but at this point I think the next time we see him will be September in his own show.

Given the sound of the other CW pilots for next season I think The Flash would be at the top of their list. It'd take the others to all be truly amazing for it to not be picked up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Awww i would have really liked that we get to see Flash pilot before the fall. I think she is and i am really excited for it. Now i just need to know if Steven Mcqueen will become Nightwing on Arrow. They really like to tease with that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Series pick up and late renewals are all announced at the Upfronts in May.

    ReplyDelete
  28. they're currently shooting the pilot.
    We'll know by early may.

But don't despair, with that media buzz it's bound to go to series

    ReplyDelete
  29. Please not! But I agree it looks low :(

    ReplyDelete
  30. is a renewal still in the cards for Revolution ?

    ReplyDelete
  31. probably may, but since they started to shoot the flash earlier than the other pilots,i can see it be picked up in april.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There is a lot of buzz. Honestly, i think they will announce it being picked in April Together with Supernatural : Tribes

    ReplyDelete
  33. NOOO TTP! You can't get lower than 0.5. I guess this means goodbye to the show.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What happened to CW? Arrow is such a great show.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I guess TTP is over. At this point Star-Crossed has better chance for Season 2

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pablo Troncoso6 March 2014 at 16:35

Arrow was so great last night! It doesn't deserve that low rating!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Eric Van Velson6 March 2014 at 16:35

Ouch, series low for Arrow, it's never hit a .8 much less a .7. I hope it can bounce back in a couple weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ARROW!!!!!!!!!!!!! what? You deliver arguably one of your best episodes to date for a potential series low? no way.

    TTP-So it has begun.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What happened to Arrow?! Last night was great!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wth happened the cw shows

    ReplyDelete
  41. It had a 0.8 for episode 4, but this is a new series low.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think that when CW chose to renew Reign, the fans of TTP thought the show is gone. It's no gone. The show has a good story, every episode is getting better and better. Please, don't give up on the show. It can still be renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Eric Van Velson6 March 2014 at 16:38

Yeah I realized just after I submitted it that I overlooked that episode and edited it in.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The CW is not having a good week. Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  45. 0.4 after Arrow! 0.3 after Star Crossed?

    ReplyDelete
  46. star crossed and batb returned up in viewers or demo.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The are in different networks but yes I do feel only one of them will see a third season and that's Nashville. Given the fact that ABC has failed to launch a successful new drama this year, the chances are high of it coming back are higher. I don't count AoS as successful because it keeps dropping.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Pablo Troncoso6 March 2014 at 16:40

Aaaaaan, Revolution is steady; I'll take that over dropping, but come on! I want to see at least a 1.4!
Hopefully next week it rises alongside with Arrow, which had such a great episode

    ReplyDelete
  49. Brandy Danforth6 March 2014 at 16:43

They'll both be cancelled along with CD,BatB .

    ReplyDelete
  50. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    ReplyDelete
  51. Brandy Danforth6 March 2014 at 16:44

Ouch at CW!TTP is dead!lol.Remember people saying it wasn't lead in dependant?Well it is:in Oct against WS when Arrow fell ,TTP did.In Jan,when Arrow rose,TTP rose to 0.7.Now Arrow falls again, and so does TTP.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Eidnoreid Pills6 March 2014 at 16:52

It's about on par at this point, it's a wait and see deal with The 100.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Justyna Kubica6 March 2014 at 16:53

Ouch at Arrow, Revolution and TTP! Awful ratings all around!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Can we have halfs please??? Anyone?

  57. Damn, you beat me to it by a few seconds LOL

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lol but hey now we are extra sure they are available!

    ReplyDelete
  59. And now only TVD can keep Supernatural from being the highest show in the demo this week (assuming Arrow doesn't correct up 3 points which is unlikely).

    ReplyDelete
  60. WHAT THE HECK??!! What happened with Arrow??!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. It could still adjust up to .8.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What the hell happened to the CW?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Pablo Troncoso6 March 2014 at 17:13

Happy to see Revolution increased on its second half hour. If it adjusts up, I'll be happy

    ReplyDelete
  64. agreed, that was the first episode since episode 8 I troughoutly enjoyed again and the ratings dip so low ? I mean it's clearly not this episodes that is to blame tough

    ReplyDelete
  65. didn't SPN score a 0.9 this week ?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Eidnoreid Pills6 March 2014 at 17:19

Yes and I think TO got a 0.8.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Eidnoreid Pills6 March 2014 at 17:20

Arrow series low and for the Island episode too. :(.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I doubt that TVD will score lower than a 1.0 tough, it's still a rock solid rated show :/

    ReplyDelete
  69. Exactly! Arrow would have to adjust up .2 to tie it and .3 to surpass it. The CW shows are not doing well this week, which makes me sad because I watch a lot of them. But as of now, Supernatural has the best numbers in the demo. I don't think Reign can beat it, TVD might.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Eidnoreid Pills6 March 2014 at 17:24

It's gotten 0.9s before though so it's possible either way.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Should rise in 2 weeks. Suicide Squad is on, as well as 100 premiere. I just hope that blonde in the teaser was Harley Quinn!

    ReplyDelete
  72. still glad that TO 'only' dropped to a 0.8...that's kinda all I care about. TVD has lost me with episode 101, I didn't manage to get into TTP, Reign isn't by cup o' tea and Star-Crossed didn't reel me in

Arrow, SPN and The Originals are currently the only three shows I care about on this network and luckily all three are doing fine

I doubt that TVD will fall below a 0.9 tough, simply because the fandom seems more obsessed than ever lately

    ReplyDelete
  73. I believe arrow and TTP were pre-empted in some places due to basketball.

    ReplyDelete
  74. this week so far:
    SPN 0.9
    TO 0.8
    Arrow 0.7
    TTP 0.4
    Star-Crossed 0.4
    BATB 0.3

    bad week for CW

I'm with you 100% though I think my issue is that I just think the flashback storyline is stupid. This whole season has been just "blah" compared to last season, the main "mirakuroo" (however it is spelt) is just horrible. I also can't stand Laurel & Sarah or the actresses who play them, so its becoming more difficult each week to for me to watch.

  78. I should pay attention to TVDs ratings more...true TVDs ratings this season seem relatively on par with SPN and The Originals.

I agree with mac. Lost stayed consistent with quality, it just relied on more scifi in the later seasons which made a lot of people dislike it.

  82. Revolution doesn't have the best ratings this season, but it sure has impressive steady ones and a loyal audience

what the reason behind arrow rating dropping but a epic episode......I guess American idol had a factor

  84. The possibly most hyped episode of Arrow ever ends up hitting a series low in ratings. I guess we're all pretty much under an illusion that social media is a deciding factor. When push comes to shove, the masses will abandon you and go watch reality TV drivel...

  85. Pray for Revolution. This show is so great right now!

  86. CW is not having a good week..and Arrow deserves better numbers, the episode was so great last night, and it's one of the best shows in tv right now. I hope it will do better in the next episodes!! I think the situation for TPP is very bad..

  87. Ouch for Arrow. It was one of the best episodes. I think the low rating is not reflect this episode but the way the last four episodes were done. We stop at mid season finale with showing Slade in Starling and it takes 4 episodes for that story line to move an inch. They are giving more importance to recurring characters and sidelining regulars. The melodrama in previous episodes, lack of pacing and continuity might be the reason ratings are low. I was slowly loosing the enthusiasm by last week. This week restored my faith.
