Once Upon a Time- Episode 3.14 "The Tower" Review- It works... it just doesn't fully work

Over the time I’ve been reviewing Once Upon a Time I have made one thing crystal clear: I don’t like Charming/David. That’s something that started kicking in this season, during season 1 and 2 I didn’t care much for him, but I never truly disliked him. His particular storylines during Neverland were the ones that made me dislike him: of all the characters he was the shallowest, he was pretty one dimensional, “he is Mr. right”, he will be brave, he will care for his family, blah, blah, blah, in short, the stereotypical hero.

I didn’t have much faith on an episode centered on him; I did wish the episode would finally ground his character and make him more complex, but I didn’t hold much hope. Did the episode managed to do so? Sort of, some of the episode’s highlights rely on the scenes that don’t feature David, but I will admit there are a few good ones around there.
What I did like about the episode was that David is finally forced to face his fears. Actually, the whole theme of the episode is fear and how we let it control us even when we think we are the ones controlling it. In that regard, the exploration of David’s psyche is a huge step forward and kind of a success. Why kind of? That’s because, even while this exploration has added a layer of depth, the character still feels ridiculously stereotypical.

On the Enchanted Forest, David is concerned about Snow’s pregnancy as he has lost Emma twice. A less than impressive conversation with Robin Hood (which was one of the most boring part of the episode, one that actually made me snore) he decides to go on a quest for a root that if digested would help him face his fear. I was thinking “typical OUAT flaw, resolving issues with magic instead of making any organic development on their characters” and thankfully I was just half right, but at the time I was really unimpressed.

He goes for this root, gets it, but he is interrupted when he hears someone screaming for help. It’s Rapunzel! David climbs her hair as per the story and he learns that Rapunzel is a princess that has been held prisoner in the tower for some years, and that she lost her brother who was going to take the throne. This is another moment of true boredom in the episode for me, my minds drifts and I start thinking “if she has been there for years, how is she so clean? How does she wash her hair? Does she have more than one change of clothes? How does she changes those clothes?” and that’s a really bad sign, it’s usually when you are bored the most when you question the logic of it all.

But those probably were the only parts I truly didn’t like, because I did dig the whole twist to the story, in which the one who kept Rapunzel prisoner was no other than herself and in order to free herself she had to acknowledge that she didn’t want to leave the tower in the first place and that she was afraid of not making a good queen. It connects with the whole theme of the episode, and it shows that the ones that prevent us to move forward are in fact ourselves.
Back on Storybrooke- and as if the show decided to read my last review to make up for Snow being naïve- David gets to meet Zelena, but he’s wary of her intentions (just as Snow should have been). He points out that they don’t know her at all and how convenient is that she is just popping out of nowhere after a second curse in which they don’t remember anything of their time in the Enchanted Forest (“we can’t ask references for a missing year”). Considering the situation that they’re in, reluctance is appreciated.

The scenes surrounding David’s first meeting with Zelena are carefully treated, amazingly shoot and it creates a certain dance of avoidance with the tea Zelena is making. It keeps you wondering “what will happen to David once he drinks that tea”. It’s a little scene treated so well that it leaves some kind of sweet aftertaste for what’s to come.

Trying to track The Wicked Witch, David goes to the forest, where he confronts himself. He claims he is not scared of anything, but that’s not true, fear is supposedly making him weak. I say supposedly because what’s really weakening him is not fear itself but the denial of it; he wants to pretend it’s not there and that only makes it worst. That’s the most complex character work ever done in David, and it falls into one of the most basic resources on fantasy storytelling (facing oneself), but as I said, it is still a step forward and it’s kind of well executed.

I say “kind of” a lot because I feel most of the stuff in the episode works, but they work at half power. And not only David’s scenes, but also Zelena’s meeting with Rumple felt creepy but failed to feel threatening and Hook’s conversation with Emma would have been extremely poignant (especially his line “if it’s broken, it means it still works”) if it wasn’t for the music which made it feel cheesy. They are all working, I’m able to feel something through those scenes, but I’m not feeling all of it, as if something is wrong in the making.

Once David faces and conquers his fears, he rendezvous with Regina, Hook and Emma, and our heroes gather around Zelena’s house as Emma and Hook were able to find her secret basement and they find out that Wicked has stolen David’s courage (and that was the whole point of the tea dance early in the episode) and that Rumple is still alive and has successfully broke out of his prison.

The possibilities for next episodes are endless, there can be a lot of fun and now the show may be able to make David feel a little bit more real, but it still has to figure out a lot of the kinks in the way. This far into the series (the show is already on its 3rd season) it can’t be making mistakes that are understandable in the first season. The episode’s scenes shouldn’t work at half power, but at full power, and that’s something I think Once Upon a Time is still struggling to do time to time.

Grade: B-

Stray Observations:

-Regina once again steals the episode with her short conversation with Henry; it’s poignant, it is lovely and Jared. S Gilmore is doing a much better job when he’s being clueless about what’s going on.

-I didn’t mention Zelena’s brief scene with Belle, mostly because it falls on the category of completely expendable scenes made only for the sake of showing Emily de Ravin. I think Belle has been one of the most forgotten characters this season.

-Another scene I didn’t really care for was the obviously dream sequence at the beginning which portrayed David’s fear of parenthood so obviously that I mostly rolled my eyes (also because it’s hard to picture Emma in those clothes preparing for a ball). Work on the subtlety OUAT, please, things are much better when they are showed via actors expressions than when they are screamed at you.

-Is it me, or did the characters on the show struggled with the word “death” this episode?

-Snow: “She knew Johana, they were friends”
Snow, dearie, just because someone tells you they are friends with your nanny doesn’t make it so.

-Regina: “That’s the good thing about a small town, everybody knows everybody… … it’s like a big family”.
Regina struggled a bit saying those words, but you can see she meant them.
On a side note, can she walk so freely around Storybrooke when most people thinks she casted the curse?

-Hook shaking some berries with his hook.
Emma: “You look for any excuse to use that thing don’t you?”

  1. Charming is not the most likeable chapter but i think they manage to get people to care at least a little bit, i liked the episode cause it showed that part of him that is vulnerable the part that is not always the hero altho he ended upo being one anyways.

Regina and Henry scene was great they both together you really feel like is a mother and his child i dunno but i like him better with Regina than with Emma, he brings the good in her.

  2. I love Charming I like that we seeing him being vulnerable not showing him being heroic all the time even though he ended up being one love Regina and Henry scene because we never really seeing them just talk and I like that Henry is clueless but I want his memories back love the Charming and Emma scene thought she look beautiful in that dress to me it's confirm that Rumple isn't Zelena father sticking to my theory that Snow father King Leopold is Zelena father

  3. It would be interesting is Zelena is also Snow's sister, I wonder how the show would handle it

  4. I'll never like Henry with Regina, the woman who made him feel like he was crazy. Who planned on using a potion on him to make him think that he loved her. Who told him that she was planning on killing everyone in Storybrooke and run off with him, just to turn around and erase his memory of their conversation. That's definitely not bringing out the good in her.

  5. So he is better with the woman that gave him up for adoption and if it werent for Henry himself that went to find her, she never would've known about him or about her family, she didnt even care what was of him until he went knocking on her door Emma was not good for Henry either but she has changed and Regina has changed too, dont tell me she hasnt. Emma got a second chance with Henry, Regina deserves her chance too...
At the end i know he will end up with Emma, he is her son after all and she loves him but she learned how to love him after +10 years.

  6. Emma gave him up for adoption to give him his best chance because she was an 18 year old, in prison, no money, no job, no place to stay, the father had abandoned her and she had no family to support her. She knew she couldn't take care of him so she gave him up in one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the show. And of course she cared what happened to him but it was a closed adoption and she couldn't go look for him. She believed she had given him his best shot in life...until she actually met Regina that is and realised it wasn't the best shot.

  7. "Rumple is still alive and has successfully broke out of his prison."

I don't thin Rumple escaped but he was only transported in other place. Only padlock was broken, not whole doors, but we will see.

  8. For him, it was the best shot. She didn't hurt him, he didn't starve and etc. Years later, Henrry found that his biological grandparents was near him.

  9. And she met Regina because of him! that's my point if it werent for him Emma will still be clueless.
Of course she deserves to be with Henry now like 1 year later but not at the beginning that's all I'm saying, and in season one you could see how Regina tried to make her son happy and she couldnt and he didnt give her a chance cause she was the Evil Queen and then he realised she was good too and Regina was better with him than without.
My point is Regina spent 10 years loving this child as the Evil Queen, she was his mother and now she is nothing to him (cause of the memory lost) that is pretty hard for her.

  10. Ya Agree!
I like Regina, she was a good mother, just trying to protect her son during season 1, and she was really changing for the better in season 2, and has become much more likely in season 3.

There is nothing wrong with having 2 mothers who both love you.

  11. I think he did break out, but that it was organized by Zelina. She did shave him. I think maybe she closed things in a way that he could scape. Or he could have heard Emma and Hook and felt he needed to leave. Anyways, I am glad he is out.

  12. I understand your dislike of Charming, but I like him anyways. And the Charming and Robin Hood scene was not as boring to me, because I was so glad Robin is showing up frequently.

I must mention, my biggest disconcern with the Tower scene was "How does Rapunzel braids her hair? Does she braids and unbraids it as it grows? How long does that take? Why go through all that trouble if the hair is going to grow and the only way to keep the braid is to undo it and redo it?", but you voiced some interesting concerns too.

  13. I always welcome more scenes with Snow, Charming or Hook and I didn't find Charming's scenes boring. Not everyone is a hardcore Regina fan. Not everyone hates David and Snow (or anyone else that Regina hates), and not everyone thinks that every second of Regina screen-time is the best part of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Even if I DO love Regina and she is my favourite character, I'll have to agree with you. David's scenes in this episode were good, the Rapunzel part was kind of boring, but the rest was more than alright.

  15. I don't understand why everyone on the show deserves a second chance BUT Regina...
Emma deserves a second chance at being Henry's mother. Snow and Charming deserve a second chance at being Emma's parents. Neal deserves a second chance to prove his love to Emma. Hook deserves a second chance to show Emma that a pirate can change. Rumple deserves a second chance because Belle makes him better.
But Regina? F no, she doesn't deserve a second chance.

I think at the end Henry should be with both Emma and Regina - regardless them being a couple or not. They are both his mothers, both love him and both go to great extend to keep him safe.

  16. I'm not a huge fan of Charming or Regina but I liked this episode when it came to both of them. I think it showed Regina's motherly side really well and David's core concerns were shown in an interesting way. Plus, the character development with his fears was nice to see. Rapunzel was a bit of a throwaway character but it was nice of OUAT to bring another actual fairy tale character in rather than giving Snow or Regina a third or fourth identity (honestly I've lost count at this point). With Regina, I love her motherly scenes especially because those are the few times I can stand Henry. Lol. Snow's naive trust felt sort of OOC b/c they keep wavering between street smart Snow & overly trusting Snow so it's hard to figure out which is the real her.

But the one thing I absolutely can't stand about this season (continuing on from last season), is that apparently all of Belle's screen time has been cut & given over to Hook. I really don't care about Hook's obsession with Emma - I mean, honestly at this point, he's the guy at the bar following you around no matter how much you say no. Not fun or interesting or attractive. Also, being glad that someone you care for is heartbroken? Yuck. Really hope Belle doesn't go the way of Ruby, Granny, Jiminy, etc...

Rumple was just "killed" off! It would've been so much more interesting to see Belle's side of things. We already know how far Rumple spiraled when he thought Belle was gone. But we've never really seen (a self-aware) Belle spiraling into grief, etc. I would've preferred to see some more Belle scenes where she interacts with ANYONE - especially as the way it seems right now, with Neal gone, she is completely isolated. I can't believe Snow would be so cold not to befriend Belle after they all saw Rumple sacrifice himself.

  17. I know, I talk about me in the reviews, I'm aware some people like Charming even when I don't. I think David's scenes in the episode were ok, but the character needs some more work to do. I want to care about him, and I need to see him not just as a hero, but as an actual human being and this episode was a step forward to that, but I still think there is more work to be done.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm glad too that Robin is getting some screen time, but when I saw that scene it just seemed so obvious what he was going to say that I quickly lost interest.
It's a good thing you like Charming, that means you probably liked the episode and that's good. For me it was ok (B- is not a bad grade, just not a great one) and I appreciate the show is doing some work for the character; maybe over time I can come to care more for him and that would be great

  19. I agree that it is nice to see Charming vulnerable, that's what I hoped for his whole being poisoned storyline back in Neverland and never got that. He does feel more human after the episode and because of that he is easier to relate to now

  20. I think Regina was/is a good mother most of the time, but during season 1 she went crazy when she felt threaten by Emma and she wasn't the best mother then, but that's just because she felt so threaten that she allowed herself going full evil queen. From season 2 onwards she has always made her best effort to be the best mother possible for Henry

  21. A Canadian promo for next week's episode confirms that Rumple indeed break out

  22. Yes I saw that. I wrote: "(...) we will see."... and we saw.

  23. Emma loved him the moment he was born, which is why she gave him up as she knew she was in no position at the time to raise him herself. And we have no idea whether or not she thought of him at all over the years after she gave him up. You're making assumptions based on her reaction to his showing up at her door.

If Regina could treat him as if he's a person and not a possession and as if it's his job to make her happy. Regina's barely made changes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hook hasn't changed.

Regina has done a lot more than Hook though. Slaughtering an entire village (that includes children as it does adults) just because they wouldn't tell her where to find Snow. Sent numerous kids to their deaths in the Blind Witch's house because she was determined to get her revenge on Snow.

So far, no Regina isn't quiet ready for her second chance. She is a little more so than Hook though.

I don't understand the determination by the writers and the Regina and Hook fans to white wash what they've done. Rumple at least has owned up to what he has done and admits his flaws. Regina and Hook both pretend as if it was okay for them to do what they did. Rumple's the only story they've been doing right as far as the villains go. Regina's and Hook's have been a big mess.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Regina doesnt regret anything that she has done and she knows she has done horrible things, she said it herself when she took Henry's heart back, she knows she did all of that cause she wanted revenge, i know that but that changed when Henry came, she started caring for someone else and she continued to do bad things when someone came to take away what she thought it will be her happy ending.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't speak for Hook, because other than coming back for Emma and helping her getting Henry we haven't see character growth (he's still too new to the plot, so I won't be so easy to judge, as I see most of the fans are)...

And yes, Regina did terrible things, and she doesn't regret them because she got Henry out of it, which (and I quote her) is the only thing she got right.
He has made her better. You don't believe me? She put her heart back in her chest, the Evil Queen would have left it out. She agreed to live with Snow and Charming, the Evil Queen would have taken "her" castle and lived there alone. Instead, she stayed with them. She gave Emma nice memories with Henry, she didn't have to do that.

If you are going to tell me, she "only" agreed to live with them, put her heart back and give Emma and Henry nice memories, no biggie. Well, Rumple only decided to stab himself and kill Pan.
I'm not taking importance from Rumple's action by any mean. But it was a hard decision for both of them. Rumple had to kill his father and Regina had to let go of the hate she had towards the Charming and live with them. That's a HUGE step.

    ReplyDelete
  27. But then she turned around and was ready to put herself under the sleeping curse because she couldn't deal. And then decided that she had to have someone else to go after. The woman is too twisted and you can't tell me she isn't.

If she doesn't regret, she will never truly change.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Did she really start caring for someone else? Or did she only adopt Henry because she wanted someone to care for her? That's something she keeps showing over and over again, like with Hansel and Gretel and with Owen. It's never really about if she cares for them, but if they care for her and can make her happy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks for commenting! You make some very good points and I agree with most of what you say.
Could you tell me why David is one of your favorite characters? Maybe I can come to like him better if I see why other people like him :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I couldn't agree more with you. While I like Hook as a character I think the screen time between to main cast character has to fairly divided. Belle has had almost no chance to do anything this season besides working together with Ariel that one time. Luckily, Belle will have a major rol in "Quiet Minds" (tomorrow's episode)
