Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Monday 2/17/14 Metered Markets
More Victory for NBC; Substantial Sampling for Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” Debut

Household
Rating/Share
NBC 14.7/22
ABC 5.4/ 8
Fox 3.9/ 6
CBS 3.4/ 5
CW 0.9/ 1

Note: The year-to-year comparisons are excluded during the XXII Winter Olympics

———-

-Winners:
XXII Winter Olympics (NBC), “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Bachelor” (ABC), “Castle” (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Star-Crossed” (CW), “Beauty and the Beast” (CW)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
The Winter Olympics, featuring the return of Bob Costas in the anchor chair, scored a very dominant 14.7 rating/22 share in the household overnights from 8-11 p.m. The peak half-hour was 10:30 p.m., with a 15.4/25, and this served as ample lead-in support to the debut of Jimmy Fallon as the new host of “The Tonight Show.”

Leading out of the local news (which aired in the 11:30 p.m. ET half-hour), Jimmy Fallon opened with a hefty 7.1/20 from 12-1 a.m. The 12 a.m. half-hour was an 8.1/22, with 12:30 a.m. at a 6.2/19, and that 7.1/20 beat the late night competition combined on CBS (David Letterman and Craig Ferguson) and ABC (Jimmy Kimmel and “Nightline”) by 82 percent. Comparably, Jay Leno’s last night as host of “The Tonight Show” (on Thursday, Feb. 6) was a 9.2/22.

Fallon, of course, will be standing on his own effective next week at 11:35 p.m. ET (minus the lead-in support from The Winter Olympics), but the sampling was exactly what NBC had hoped to accomplish. Fallon’s initial guests last night were Will Smith and U2.

In series-premiere news, CW drama “Star-Crossed,” the tale of the romance of a human girl and an alien boy after he and eight others of his kind are integrated into a suburban high school, opened with a weak 1.1/ 2 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was just 10 percent above “Hart of Dixie” one week earlier (1.0/ 1). Year-ago occupant “The Carrie Diaries” scored a 0.9/ 1. Notably negative for “Star-Crossed” was a loss of 17 percent in the household overnights at 8:30 p.m. (1.2/ 2 to 1.0/ 1), and The CW is hoping an encore telecast of the pilot tonight at 9 p.m. will attract additional interest.

Leading out of “Star-Crossed” was failing sophomore “Beauty and the Beast” at a mere 0.7/ 1 at 9 p.m.

Despite facing The Winter Olympics, perennial “The Bachelor” held up on ABC with a second-place 5.5/ 8 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. And that led into “Castle” second at 10 p.m. with a 5.1/ 8. Mark your calendars for the debut of the spring edition of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” on March 17.

Elsewhere, CBS populated the 8-10 p.m. block with encores of soon-to-conclude “How I Met Your Mother” (#4: 3.0/ 4), “2 Broke Girls” (#4: 3.1/ 5), “Mike & Molly” (#4: 3.4/ 5) and “Mom” (#4: 3.2/ 5), which remains an ideal fit out of “Mike & Molly.” Recent drama entry “Intelligence” capped off the night for the Eye net with a third-place 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m., which dipped by 22 percent from the 4.9/ 8 one week earlier (which faced an encore of “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Matt Damon Returns” on ABC instead of the regularly scheduled “Castle”).

Fox’s combination of dramas “Almost Human” (#3: 4.0/ 6) and “The Following” (#3: 3.8/ 5), meanwhile, were on par with one week earlier. “The Following” on the year-ago evening was notably stronger at a 5.4/ 8 in the overnights.

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

  1. I honestly don't know what I was expecting for Star Crossed. Shame it didn't do better.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Airing it against the Olympics, what was The CW expecting for Star-Crossed?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Why can I not see the actual rating numbers on the grid? I just cleared my cookies and I still can't see them, I can see the grid, but it's blank.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'm guessing 0.5 for Star-Crossed. Best-case scenario is a 0.6, worst is 0.3

    ReplyDelete
  5. They have not been uploaded yet. Please read the "About the Daily Ratings" section for more info.

    ReplyDelete
  6. As per usual, I'll wait for the actual demo numbers

    ReplyDelete
  7. Because there's no numbers just yet. They'll be available in a few hours.

    ReplyDelete

  9. Thank you, I'll try to be more patient. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks for the info...now the waiting, ugh!

  11. @cris we'll be tweeting out on our main and ratings Twitter account as soon as the 18-49 numbers start to be entered @STV_Ratings

  12. I love this community! Always ready with a complete and well-informed answer with no snark. Thanks for your reply!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ugh, Twitter...that and Pinterest, both born of the devil because they suck you in and won't let you get your work done. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I actually surprisingly enjoyed Star-crossed. Mondays are a tough night for the CW to begin with. I understand their other nights are pretty solid and don't want to screw that up, but to air the premier during the Olympics didn't even give it a fighting chance. I'll continue to watch and will watch The 100 when it airs but don't have my hopes high for that one either.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Give me a break, Marc Berman. Did you really expect Star-Crossed to obtain The Vampire Diaries and Arrow overnight ratings with that competition? and about the loss on the second half, that happens to the majority of shows. Even to your loved Cbs shows.

The Michael J. Fox was stable the night it debuted and then the next week it fell hard.

Now Star-Crossed needs to follow the road of The Originals, which managed to increase a bit, but I recognize it's hard because it will not face the Olympics again, but The Voice and How I Met Your Mother will be back.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If that results in an 0.5/6 for Starcrossed, I would think the CW would be happy-ish with it given it went against the olympics.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Paul "I love the way I crash my shows" Lee did it again! He destroyed Revenge and Ouat with horrible schedule last year and now is time to Castle.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What are you talking about? Castle is fine.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I used to feel that way about Facebook, that wore off for me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. so that could be a 0.5 for StarCrossed? woao that's low.. but again they were against The Olympics so for CW standars they did good...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was not talking about if the show is fine or not.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really hope so, since I liked the first episode.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I´m expecting a series low for Castle, but I don´t think there´s anything wrong with its schedule! I suppose you are talking about airing against the Olympics? If so, well it was just 1 episode and I´m sure ABC wasn´t expecting great ratings and probably won´t even take this episode demo into account when deciding about renewals.
And, in a way, it was nice of them giving people who don´t care that much about Olympics another option:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know you were talking about the ratings, but airing it for one night against the Olympics won't permanently effect the ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know renewal is not a problem! but It is not fair that they aired one of the best episode of this season against the Olympics :O And I know they don't care about the show at all. I expect a series low too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It might be Olympics season, but you are also forgetting that it's February sweeps too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Happy for Jimmy Fallon, I don't watch a lot of the late night chat shows but what I've seen of him has always made me laugh, hope people stick with it post Olympics

    ReplyDelete
  28. I dont forget that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Considering The Olympics and The Bachelor (which has many female viewers), I think a rating of 0.5 would be a good answer to the people that wanted it to obtain 0.3.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Save Beauty and the Beast please....

    ReplyDelete
  31. I enjoyed it. Maybe it will pick up some fans tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Almost Human and The Following! Decent overall numbers for Star-Crossed and certainly better than Beauty and The Beast's numbers, not being show biased here, just realistic!

(Sits back and awaits the downvotes!) :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. I dont think it airing on Monday would hinder it too much but against the Olympics and then with no support was just asking for trouble. IMO It would only need to average 0.6/0.7 for the season to get a renewal of some kind evn to air late next season running into the summer would have been great. But it looks like CW just wasted time and money in making it in the first place which is an insult to the cast and crew who put time and effort into making it. Not to mention the people who will watch and anjoy it hopeing it will survive.

    ReplyDelete
  34. not bad considering the competetion but if there is the usual decline and no improvement its basically DOA.

  36. Wow, I was expecting at least a 0.6 for Star-Crossed. The CW should have waited till next week to premiere it. Oh well, it was a pretty good show but I don't think I'll stick with it. I wonder what this mean for TTP when it moves to Mondays. I won't be surprised if it scores 0.4's in its Monday timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1.7. I will remain silent.

    ReplyDelete
  38. So if SC remains at 0.4, i guess ratings for TTP will go down on Mondays with weak Lead. The 100 needs 0.5-0.6 ratings to be renewed i guess

    ReplyDelete
  39. At the end of Beauty & the Beast they showed scenes of the next new ep for March 3rd. I heard it was coming back in May. Did something change?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Honestly, I was expecting worse; even if it adjusts down it won´t be less than 1.6 I believe? I´m curious to see the DVR numbers for this episode, tough.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 0.4 for SC.Thats really bad for a premire.Especially since it will probably fall more next week and next month with DST when it starts.Even though it did what HoD did two weeks ago in the slot,I don't think SC will survive.

    ReplyDelete
  42. There's two episodes left (March 3, March 10) before it goes on hiatus til May.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh thanks:) I liked it, I'll miss it:(

    ReplyDelete
  44. #saveoneshow #Batbs3 redemption was great getting back to its high standards again. Love the show and cast. But more people watching Olympics so ratings will be down.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You do realize that E!Online's Save One Show is never actually going to save a show? It never has and never will. It's just a fun little game every year that gives people false hope.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Star-Crossed = DOA. I know it was up against the Olympics but....

Intelligence and The Following held their own against the Olympics. Those two really need to pick up steam next week otherwise they could be in serious trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do you mean Dancing with stars? I think that despite having more total viewers its rating on average is lower than The Bachelor's.
0.4 isn't a great or good rating, but at least it didn't do bad as Cult (hoping Star-Crossed will not be adjusted down). Now I hope it will somehow increase, even though I know it will be hard against The Voice and How I Met Your Mother.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gutted for Star Crossed- Come on! Give it a chance.. its really very good guys - Twilight it aint.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hashtags do nothing outside of twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Star-Crossed... Well at least it's filmed it's entire season already. it could go up and we could say it's because of the Olympics, but I'm not sure that's the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think it's hard. Star-Crossed's premiere wasn't supported by a strong lead-in like Almost Human and The Following (Football) and they didn't premiere against the Olympics. A good lead-in allows the series to have a wide audicence, at least at first.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Good to see AH holding steady from last week with the early numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. E!'s Save One Show is BS. Kristin likes to pretend that she saved many shows, but we all know that's not the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ah, right. But unless they put Star Crossed after SPN, TVD, Arrow or even maybe The Originals, it won't ever have a good lead in. Next week will be where you can tell as a prelim definite whether it'll be cancelled or not.

Wasn't exactly the best move by the CW to premiere it this week as opposed to next week though.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Castle hit series low but it was really ballsy of ABC to schedule an original during Olympics season.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It's funny - since I'm pulling for The Tomorrow People in the CW survivor game, I don't know if I should be rooting for Star-Crossed (since it's going to be TTP's lead-in soon) or against it (because it and The 100 are TTP's main competition).

Ultimately, though, I don't have much hope left for TTP regardless of how S-C performs. With the move to Monday and then Reign being renewed, I guess I should settle in for enjoying 9 more TTP episodes and hoping the writers provide some measure of closure in the finale.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That reminds me of the meme "How to make money off Facebook: 1. Go to your account settings. 2. Delete your account. 2. Get back to work."

    ReplyDelete
  58. Reminds me what they did with Cult last season. With the slot they gave that show, it reeked of a burn-off before the show had even premiered.

    ReplyDelete
  59. TTP is in an impossible situation: it needs S-C to do poorly, and yet to get good ratings while airing after it. Sadly, I just can't see TTP surviving, barring some kind of miracle. Technically, The CW can even cancel all three, assuming it's going to renew Hart of Dixie (which I'm pretty sure of, they've presumably stuck with it this long because it's cheap and they want to get it to syndication).

    ReplyDelete
  60. We might as well be talking to a brick wall with that one. I don't know how many times it's been said.

    ReplyDelete
  61. For the sake of its fans, I hope the show's writers penned a finale that can serve as a series finale. With The CW having a good year and now Reign's renewal, I'm leaning towards TTP and S-C being cancelled, and The 100 only standing a chance if it exceeds expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm in the EXACT same position :( why can't the CW have more spots in their schedule?...

    ReplyDelete
  63. doesnt The Voice start next week?

    ReplyDelete
  64. ratings were the same as they've been all season

    ReplyDelete
  65. a 1.0 is about 1.27? million 18-49 year olds

a 0.3 rating would be around 0.38 million viewers

    Beauty averages around 700,000/800,000 viewers

so yes around half of its viewers are outside of the 18-49 demo and I suspect they are mostly under 18

    ReplyDelete
  66. Guess I should have included that too but since I never login, I don't get sucked in. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. technically the CW dont need to renew any of the remaining bubble shows if we assume they will air a combination of HOD/reality on Friday, pick up 3 new shows for the fall and 2 new for mid season.

But I suspect they are waiting for T100 and HOD Friday ratings before they decide on their fates but other than those I dont think any other CW show will be renewed or needs to be renewed

    ReplyDelete

AH rating seem good as it fighting against Olympics.........BATB number still awful....I wonder why network would broadcast show during the Olympics?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not decent for SC I'm afraid and only just better than Beauty's numbers, in fact a couple of weeks ago Beauty got a 0.4. Both shows will be cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I dont think they will order 5 new shows, since they only ordered 6 pilots and i dont think Identity & Jane the virgin have a chance

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah but it's getting higher ratings than The Voice. Putting it against The Voice gives it a better chance than premiering it against the Olympics.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Almost Human is looking save- i'm holding fingers to hear it's been renewed!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. its not like its in danger of being cancelled

    ReplyDelete
  74. I would have though more young women watch The Voice than the winter Olympics?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Very stereotypical of the show (not that I watch it). So you think the ratings will go down next week?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I read somewhere the the female lead said that the finale ends in a cliffhanger.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Great for Castle!! great numbers against the Olympics

    ReplyDelete
  78. It goes like this:
    The CW has 10 slots.
5 are already filled with the shows they renewed a few days ago (SPN, TO, TVD, Arrow & Reign).
Most people expect the network to premiere 3 new shows next fall, since that's what they've been doing for the last three years.
That leaves you with only 2 slots. One will most likely be filled by HoD - yes, its ratings are low, but the decline has been gradual so the show is stable on the whole, and it's cheap to produce. Most importantly, it seems they largely stuck with the show until now because they want to get it to syndication which requires 4 full seasons (88 episodes). The fact that it wasn't renewed last week does cast some doubt, but I tend to think it'll get at least a short final season for wrap-up. They did that for Nikita which wasn't performing any better.
So we're left with only one vacant slot, or at most 1.5 if HoD gets a short season, and there's even America's Next Top Model to fit in there somewhere (assuming it airs in the fall which has been the case for the last couple of years). So really, out of TTP, S-C and T100, only one can be renewed in terms of room on the schedule, and it's not even impossible for all 3 to get the axe.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh. Well, I guess S-C fans can start a support group with fans of Ringer, TSC, Cult, etcetera.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Not to mention outside of the US. No offense to the non-US viewers because for those of you who aren't Beauty-obsessives, your posts are great, but your eyes on a US tv show don't matter in the cancel/renew decisions. If you could find someone locally to produce the show, more power to you but I think that that is even less likely than the CW renewing it. I'm not trying to be snarky or a hater but I get very tired of all of the Beauty-propaganda posts.

    ReplyDelete
  81. #BATB THE BEST SHOW

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sorry, I don't see your point?

    ReplyDelete
  83. The Bachelor has many female viewers, too.
Like I said, I know it's hard for Star-Crossed, but hope dies last :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Brandy Danforth8 April 2014 at 01:11

You realize it's been getting the same 0.3 demo all seasonwhen it hadn't aired against Olympics as it did airing them ?

    ReplyDelete
  85. The difference is that Almost Human and The Following (second season) didn't premiere on an Olympics day and the first episode of both had the support of football (not the Super Bowl, but still).

No Daylight Savings Time which starts in March in USA and usually hurts shows ratings cause with it being warmer out & longer daylight hours, people are outside more than inside watching tv.,especially shows in 8/7c & 9/8 c timeslots.Though DWTS is similarly female skewing as is SC and so is the Voice so they will be tough competition.
