Comparably, “Intelligence” dipped by a hefty 56 percent from its preview out of “NCIS” last Tuesday (10.2/15 on Jan. 7), and it was down by 12 percent from the premiere of former time period occupant “Hostages” (5.1/ 9 on 9/23/13).
ABC’s “The Bachelor,” which remains solid time period filler in between seasons of “Dancing With the Stars,” was right on par with the year-ago evening.
Earlier in the evening on CBS was soon-to-conclude “How I Met Your Mother” at a dominant 5.9/ 9 in the overnights at 8 p.m., followed by “2 Broke Girls” (#1: 5.7/ 9), “Mike & Molly” (#1: 6.3/ 9) and “Mom” (#2: 5.5/ 8), which was promising with 90 percent retention out of “Mike & Molly.”
Elsewhere, Fox finished third overall for the evening with its pairing of on-the-fence “Almost Human” (#3: 4.9/ 7) and demo friend “Sleepy Hollow” (#3: 4.2/ 6), which concludes for the season with a two-hour season finale on January 27. NBC aired a two-hour installment of “American Ninja Warrior: USA: vs. Japan” into “The Blacklist,” which finished fourth with a 3.1/ 5 from 8-10 p.m. But the demo results are likely to be more competitive. And The CW capped off the evening with low-rated “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 1.1/ 2) and “Beauty and the Beast” (#5: 0.7/ 1).

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteI really hope Intelligence didn't do as poorly as it looks here. Its skew last week was absolutely ridiculous, it was older skewing than NCIS and that's a hard thing to do. If most of the lost in the households occurred on the viewers level and not on the demo level it will be fine. Fingers crossed. Elsewhere, fingers also crossed for the Blacklist and for the bubble Almost Human.
ReplyDeleteAn early 4.9 is great for Almost Human! I know it doesn't necessarily translates into demo ratings, but there's hope; this at least means there are more viewers than last week, let's hope that those viewers are on the 18-49 age range :)

The Blacklist seems to hold very good without The Voice, I expect the demos to be in mid 2s

ReplyDeleteI think it will become the same nightmare for ABC if they move Castle, that's why I am so much against it. It's a horrible combination of factors. It's 10pm which has been going down and down more and more - the only show that comes to my mind that frequently builds at 10pm without having a very compatible (regardless of if it is higher or lower rated) behind it is Parenthood on NBC. The Mondays 9h30pm lead-ins are all very modest, not to mention incompatible in case of CBS (I think this also makes Elementary's numbers look better). On top of that, NBC will always have there their best drama of the season (at least in their opinions) which will always be (artificially or not) extremely boosted by the voice. It wasn't the case last night, but quite often there is also football on top of all this. I think CBS should have left Intelligence on Tuesdays and moved LA here, they need an established show here. This also makes H50's performance last here seem underrated, which certainly seems to be the same idea that its strong performance on Friday suggests.

It will easily be NBC's highest rated hour of the week (not counting the Golden Globes, of course) and the only other 10pm show to systematically do better than this in the entire broadcast is Scandal and that's from a hugely compatible and high rated GA (I love Scandal to death, just facts). So yeah The Blacklist did incredibly well!

Great for CBS comedies. HIMYM returns with a 3.0, yay! It has been really consistent in its final season. And Mom almost beat it in viewers (not that they matter much, but still).

ReplyDelete- Excellent night for Almost Human which hits high since timeslot premiere rating, does better than FOX's scripted average and looks better than ever for a renewal. Sleepy Hollow's modest performance for its own standards also makes it look better. Very very happy about this one.
- Sleepy Hollow did well, but it's a bit disappointing that it's not higher considering how high it was in early fall and that yesterday didn't have to compete with the voice
- No effect at all from the absence of the voice on the CBS Monday comedies. I think those are unimpressive numbers. I am happy The Crazy Ones scored higher than Mom and Mike and Molly last week.
- Intelligence is dead. This is so sad. I really like the show. CBS will not solve this slot with a new show. The lead-in is horrible and incompatible and the competition is absolutely brutal. They will need to move an establishes show here IMO. They should move NCIS-LA here. I think that's what they should have done already, letting Intelligence remain on Tuesdays. Oh well. Poor Josh and Megan. I am really sad about this one
- Ninja Warrior, for a filler, did amazing numbers. It's better than basically everything else on NBC, which is kind of sad, really.
- The Blacklist did amazing regardless of how people spin the numbers. The whole point of exposing a new show to a lead-in is so that it can grow its own audience while taking advantage of the big lead-in. Of course the numbers would always be inflated by the big lead-in but what matters is that the standalone numbers are still pretty healthy!
- ABC and the CW were uneventful for the most part, while the Bachelor hitting a series low against so little competition is surprising and potentially problematic for ABC (especially considering it has yet to face the olympics and later the voice!!)

I still feel that if Hostages was retooled to a procedural (similar to the Blacklist with Duncan basically filling Reds role for a team of a special hostage situation squad) it would actually have a better chance at a second season.
ReplyDeleteI think CBS did quite poorly in their comedies to be honest. They saw no bounce at all from their usual fall levels in which the comedies were facing the voice all season long. This suggests that the comedies are really weak by themselves now and that is not a problem of competition, which are bad news.
ReplyDeleteAs for HoD, you overestimate 0.1 fluctuations. Rounding errors and margin of error are more than enough to account for that. But in any case I think the show also did better last winter on Tuesday when it didn't face the voice (I could be mistaken)

ReplyDeleteTo a score a 2.0 in FOX these days is great; only other show that got a 2.0 is Sleepy Hollow and Bones on mondays (and only time to time). Even New Girl nor The X Factor gets over 2 anymore. I think FOX is happy that over 2 weeks the show went from 1.6 to 2.0, it's very promising

Over the last 2 years, there have been a lot of shows premiering on one night and moving for the 2nd episode. Hopefully this complete and utter failure will help put an end to that practice.

ReplyDeleteWhat CBS did with Intelligence was a sacrifice. I don't know what was worse, showing the pilot on a different day than when the rest of the season was actually going to be airing, or making it fight for ratings with The Blacklist and Castle which are both already mid-season and pretty stable. Clearly they were just looking for something to fill up that space until they can introduce a new show on the fall. They didn't even try to give Intelligence a surviving chance.

It's called giving it the best show of survival. Networks do it all the time (see this weekend FOX premiering The Following on Sunday after the big NFL lead-in for instance).

How come AH's numbers are not great? Please let me remind you that FOX is currently averaging a 1.80 in its dramas and a 1.6 in its scripted shows in general. Almost Human performance is at 110% and 125% of that, respectively. Please explain how is that not great!
ReplyDeleteMaybe yes, maybe not. Competition dynamics work in mysterious ways, especially for 8pm shows (which are highly viewed later in the night in the DVR, thus becoming part of the Live+SD numbers that we are seeing here). Want the best example? CBS comedies were even with what they were doing the entire fall last night despite no the voice - if the effect is such a sure thing as you were saying, the shows should have been up. I am not saying you aren't right and that it won't fall once the voice comes back, but we don't honestly know that. It could be that the show is simply building momentum, it happens!

ReplyDeleteIt was not much of a chance since the rest of the season was going to air on Mondays, if they meant to use the support of the NCIS audience they would've left it on Tuesdays. Maybe if they had let the first season keep airing on Tuesdays it would've had a chance. The only reason they didn't air it on Monday last week was because Hostages wasn't over.

ReplyDeleteThat is incorrect. That's not the reason, they could have easily aired Hostages during the holidays instead and be done with it. Or they could have premiered Intelligence this week instead, it wouldn't be an issue. They aired one episode there to get sampling, as in, to create interesting, hoping people would follow it to the timeslot. Again, a lot of examples. I've mentioned The Following. Others: NBC will air the first episode of Believe after the voice; NBC will air the first episode of About a Boy after Olympics; NBC wil air the first episode of Growing Up Fisher after Olympics; FOX aired first episode of Almost Human after NFL; ABC aired first episode of The Neighbors after Modern Family; ABC aired the first episode of Red Widow after Once Upon a Time; NBC aired the first episode of Go On after Olympics; FOX aired the first episode of Human Target after NFL; NBC aired the first episode of Guys with Kids after America's Got Talent; NBC aired the first episode of Animal Practice after The Olympics; NBC aired the first episode of 1600 Penn after The Voice; CBS aired the first episode of 2 Broke Girls after Two and a Half Men... Need I to continue?
ReplyDeleteOK I like Intelligence but I knew this would happen between the Blacklist and Castle it was gonna be a tough fight. I kinda feel like Intelligence should have been left on Tuesday nights and put Person of Interest or Elementary in the Monday slot because I think it could create a little competition, plus I hate to see a decent show dropped because CBS can't schedule their shows properly.

ReplyDeleteIntelligence, now. It was high for the Pilot and this week in the dust. Looks like the promos did their job interesting people but the show itself failed to do so.

ReplyDeleteI don't think POI should have been moved again and I don't think Elementary would fare much better in this horrible timeslot (plus, Thursdays at 10 is also not a great slot for Intelligence). I think it was NCIS LA that should have been moved.

ReplyDeleteCBS is slow at making changes, especially if it works for them. At this moment NCIS LA is more important than Intelligence for CBS. Even more since it started pulling good numbers in syndication on USA. They not gonna break up the NCIS combo this year. But next year there will probably be a move for NCIS: LA to either Wednesday or Monday.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, I don't know why people assume that CBS is so slow at making changes. ABC is way more conservative than they are. I know that is the general consensus, but I don't see why. Some recent examples:
ReplyDelete- boldingly expand to a 4 hour comedy block even as that meant putting their fastest growing drama at 10pm
- quickly moving H50 to Fridays after one weak season on Monday despite the previous two seasons in which it was (I believe) the top 10pm show on TV there
- moving The Mentalist to Sundays despite it doing good business on Thursdays
- moving The Big Bang Theory from the slot on Monday in which it was thriving to the Thursday lead-off role against the still monster American Idol. That was possibly the move of the decade IMO
In regards to your argument per se, I understand them needing to protect LA for syndication economy reasons and until this season, I never thought there was a compelling case for them to do so. People say that Vegas, Unforgettable et all should have been launched after the original NCIS instead of at 10pm after LA but I disagree, I think those shows would still have failed regardless and I think CBS was right protecting LA. But now it's different because 1) LA is old enough to stand for itself and 2) CBS literally doesn't have decent slots to launch new dramas apart from Tuesday and Wednesday and Tuesdays at 9 is BY FAR the best since there is no drama competition and since the biggest drama on broadcast is available for lead-in.
I think their problem this year was probably thinking that the problem with Mondays last year was H50's performance instead of realizing it was a problem with the slot. In other words, they probably blamed the show instead of blaming the slot.
Yeah they make changes after a season but very rarely during a season. The ratings must be very bad for them to make changes. I have some doubts that a new drama will do well on Tuesday at 9PM. Yes the lead with NCIS is great, but a new drama directly airing against The Voice for a full season could have some difficulties. I think one of the reason that they left NCIS LA at 9 PM was because they had confidence it could get solid ratings against the Voice.
ReplyDeleteI understand the voice concern but even accounting for that, the hour is far less competitive for a drama than Mondays at 10, especially considering the lead-in effect .Sleepy Hollow, Bones and The Following all thrived airing against the voice on Mondays (which is higher rated than the voice Tuesdays) and Almost Human didn't do too shabby either. The Blacklist+Castle is a far superior threat for a drama than The Voice considering the compatibility of all programs. On top of all that, The Voice is moving to 8pm in the Spring, the 9pm hour will be comedies and I think it's more likely than not that NBC keeps it that way next year as they need some place to develop comedies that is not Thursday and this is the most obvious slot, especially if About a Boy is renewed.
