ReplyDeleteYes for Revenge not adjusting down. CBS had a great night. The Good Wife is somehow impressive because even though it had a ridiculous lead-in you would think the kind of audience it has is the kind of audience that likes to watch the globes. The Mentalist is toying with all of us who try to predict renewals and cancellations by keep going up.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's very hard for me to get cable ratings as I don't follow the data systematically, which one has to do to be able to get anything.
ReplyDeleteSuper happy that True Detective got a 1.0. I really enjoyed the pilot and McConaughey's portrayal of Rust is absolutely phenomenal and has pretty much sold me on the series. Hope this keeps up past the premiere and it get's a few more seasons (Even if it will be different casts.)

ReplyDeleteI think the problem for Good Wife can be the growing Mentalist and how low in the price margin Warner can go to ensure Mentalist stays on air. I think Mentalist is quite a money machine for them so they gonna try to keep it.
ReplyDeleteI know nobody likes to hear me out on this and it's quite an unpopular opinion but I still don't understand why people assume it's between The Good Wife and The Mentalist when Blue Bloods has similar ratings and no syndication deal yet (even when it scores one, which it will, it can easily a profitability not nearly close to TGW's huge one, or H50's for the matter). I still think The Mentalist goes though, but if this continues, I see either The Good Wife or Blue Bloods as being equally in danger.

ReplyDeleteRevenge didn't get adjusted down, woohoo! Taking such a minor hit from having a dreadful lead-in and competing with the GG and Downton Abbey is impressive. I'm getting optimistic about the show's future.

ReplyDeleteI watched that but I just could not get into it. I thought it was boring as heck--you liked it? After all the critical raves, I was expecting it to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was sooo disappointed. I almost fell asleep watching it. My brother felt the same way. What was it that you liked about it. I'm trying to understand its appeal....
ReplyDeleteIt's a slow show but very philosophical and intense. I think you should go back for episode 2. It has many bad things on TV these days, I think True Detective deserves attention!

ReplyDeleteGuys, Audience and Ratings that The Mentalist had (even better than the last episodes of Red John Era) since first Post-Red John episode until now, is it enough for a Renewal? I don't know yet the minimum of both things a Series not owned from CBS (in this case) must have for a Renewal.
ReplyDeleteMy theory about awards is that they can sometimes help, but not in the direct way people think. IMO, there are two ways in which awards can be helpful:
ReplyDelete1) If a show gets a lot of awards attention, its ratings may go up. We may get an example of this tonight with B99 which was IMO the biggest winner in the golden globes TV wise (and most unexpected in such a big way). It may happen or it may not happen at all. In this case, yes, awards would help a show's surviving chances, but in an indirect way and only because they would lead to ratings going up, not because of the wards per se.
2) I have the theory that if a show is a huge critical darling, it is quite possible that it will score a better syndication deal. I have no other explanation for the monstrosity that is The Good Wife's syndication deal, especially considering it is not even a procedural, despite having procedural elements. I think some syndication buyers like the prestige that it brings because the awards can motivate new viewers to invest in the series during its syndication life. Again, this would help renewal as it would increase syndication revenue, but in an indirect way.
More than the ratings bump (which is nice as well), the best thing that could happen to The Mentalist was Intelligence flopping and that just happened. The problem is that CBS will still want to premiere 2 new dramas and unless they ax a comedy hour, they still need to cut The Mentalist for that to happen!

ReplyDeleteBecause CBS needs room to premiere new shows. They have space for one in the slot of Hostages/Intelligences. 2 comedies are certain to be cancelled, giving them room to premiere at least 2 comedies =1 more hour. But CBS will surely want to premiere a third hour, particularly another drama hour, so another veteran has to go.

ReplyDeleteThe worst they did was move it to Sundays. Perhaps they thought no more life after Red John dead and now they realised they were wrong but they can't change the day?

The show is doing remarkably well for a Friday show and, more importantly, it has the biggest syndication deal I've ever seen. I would be shocked if it was cancelled.

TGW because CBS owns it but at the moment, you don’t think TGW is doing equally
bad now? I know it was higher on the Cancellation chart than the Mentalist. I think the next
episode TGW will be back down because this is the only week it has beat and
caught up to TM thanks to the lead in.

ReplyDeleteAre you saying The Mentalist needs to be cancelled to give CBS space to air 1 drama next fall? What if CBS decides to cut 2 comedies instead?
ReplyDeleteAnd the worst thing is if that Drama doesn't work. CBS must give The Mentalist the opportunity to a 7th Season as the Final Season and wait for the Dramas when The Mentalist finishes. The Mentalist is a sure bet, but not the new Dramas.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what I am saying. And yes, I know the comedies are a possibility and I think it's possible they would be better off because I think the 9pm slots are actually better to launch new dramas than the 10pms, but so far, the worst rated comedy hour (Mike and Molly/Mom or TCO/Two and a Half Men) is still outperforming the worst rated drama hour that can be renewed (The Mentalist/The Good Wife). I also think it's unlikely that CBS wants to publicly admit defeat just a year after expanding to 4 comedy hours.
ReplyDeleteI think we also need to wait for other shows to air on CBS; if they will be good or bad. I believe CBS will decide its renewal\cancellation schedule on May.
ReplyDeleteWhich other shows? Apart from Friends with Better Lives, everything else is expected to be in the summer.
ReplyDeleteThat is a poor argument. CBS dramas are aging and within a year, not only The Mentalist will need replacement, but also The Good Wife is a very safe and it is also a very safe bet that at least a current Friday drama will be on its way to replacement as well. CBS needs to keep preparing for this and not suddenly find itself in a situation in which so many of its dramas end and need replacements. It's better to phase it out, which is why every year networks air new shows.
ReplyDeleteOh, I certainly agree with you that the show would perform better in a different situation. But that's a very irrelevant argument to make when it comes to renewals. That's like saying that "Comedy X(insert here any comedy on CBS) would stand a better chance at renewal if moved to the post Big Bang theory slot" - that's true, but that's simply not how it works, shows are judged based on the numbers they produce, not the hypothetical ones they could produces if moved to a better slot. I think sometimes some leeway is given in case of doubt, i.e., if a show is firmly on the bubble, those considerations can maybee help a bit, but those are the rare cases, not the norm. Best example of this is Intelligence - it performed with great numbers on the Tuesday debut slot after NCIS but it completely floped with the Monday numbers. CBS knows it would perform great on Tuesday (they've seen it already) but the numbers they will have on their spreadsheets when deciding to renew it or cancel are the Monday ones, so it will be cancelled!
ReplyDeleteNow we have to hope that the NFC next week doesn't take an even bigger chunck from it. I know people were more worried about the Globes and that's when all the big drops started last year, but last year the NCF took an equally sizable gap from Revenge after the globes. Let's hope it doesn't go below 1.5 this week.
ReplyDeleteCBS won't decide to renew The Good Wife or The Mentalist based on differences as small as 0.2-0.3 in the ratings especially when syndication economies for both shows are far more important than those minor rating differences.
ReplyDeleteI think The Good Wife is quite safe now. I don't think it's impossible that CBS decides to axe Blue Bloods or The Good Wife instead of The Mentalist if Warner Brothers really lowers the licensee fee enough to make it very very profitable for CBS (and the current ratings uptick trend certainly helps that), but I still think the odds are against it. My guess, as of now, is The Mentalist goes and Blue Bloods and The Good Wife both stay.
We don't know, that kind of information is not public. It's also not all about the cost, it's about profit, meaning that revenues (both from ads [which depend on ratings] and from syndication) matter as much as costs.
