The Walking Dead – Episode 4.05 – Internment – Review : "A Sad Soul Can Kill Quicker Than A Germ"

After spending last week episode outside the prison, in this week episode titled “Internment”, we are going back in the prison, and with the sickness and all, it’s pretty much as dangerous as outside. I might say it’s even more dangerous. The walkers are outside, now they are also inside and an old enemy is waiting right at the door. Yes, The Governor is back (at least he was for two seconds on screen).
All hells are breaking loose in the prison ! I've always liked the prison as a place to stay in a zombie apocalypse, but clearly now it has shown its limits : putting all the sick people in the same block was a dangerous and deadly idea and outside things are even worse, walkers are destroying fences to get in and The Big Bad Governor is getting ready to attack. BTW, The Governor is right outside and Michonne just went on a little trip with Hershel. I really hope they don’t meet up so quickly, I’m afraid Hershel won’t survive.

About Hershel, this episode was really focused on him and especially his relationship towards death, walkers and a little towards God too. At first, back in season 2, I had my problems with Hershel’s character. First, I did not see his point : he was an old man, a bit crunky and what he did at his farm was fairly stupid (keeping walkers because they were still people).
But now, I understand him better and I’ve learnt to like him. He is wise and thoughtful, he is exactly what Rick, Shane and the others needed back in season 2 and still need now. He is the moral compass of the group. He is an old and experienced man, he can save lives, and he even survived a walker’s bites. He feels like the right arm to the leader. He can make good decisions and object what’s right and what’s wrong, how our decisions define how we are. He’s the one you can rely on.
So, Hershel made the right choices during the whole episode, which is quite an exploit for a Walking Dead character. He prevented people to see him kill walkers. It’s true it must be horrible to watch someone you know, who has the same sickness as you, turns into a walker. He succeeded in saving both Sasha and Glenn. I was quite worried for Glenn, I honestly thought he just died for a second. So happy he is alive ! Sasha scared me a little but she’s still new so, I’m not that emotionally attached to her. Lizzie is still very naive. Okay she is just 10 but it’s a dangerous world and walkers are no humans. They are just zombies. She needed to get it fast or she is gonna die. People can’t come to rescue her everytime. She always puts herself in danger and Carol is not here to protect her anymore. But Hershel felt the same way she does, so he can relate to her and I hope he will help her understand.
I like the relationship between Hershel and Maggie. They deeply care and love each other. It was touching. I love when Maggie ran screaming “Dad” with her axe ! Her entry through the breaking glass was quite good too. I really enjoyed the walkers attack in the infirmary. It was full of suspense and action. It's exactly what I love in The Walking Dead, there are emotions, moment of calm and then suddenly, walkers are coming from everywhere ready to eat you ! Some people died within the infirmary, luckily not relevant ones. You gotta react fast in this world otherwise you get bitten or shot accidently.
Another relationship was developed in this episode : Rick and Carl. Since the beginning of the season, I really like what they are doing with Carl. He is no longer the annoying kid in the background. He is a young man and he understand perfectly in what kind of world he is living in. He had to shoot her mother to prevent her from turning into a walker so he knows exactly what’s at stakes. He is ready to survive and to protect himself and his father. At first, Rick did not want to see it but now, he is starting to understand and acknowledge it : his son has grown up. He was impressed when Carl saved him. It was a key moment for Rick, I like how they showed it with th emusic and Andrew Lincoln did a perfect job with his look. There is still a part of Rick that wants to protect Carl from all that, because he is his father and he knows life should not be that hard, but now he knows he can trust his son to fight. He is not a weak kid. (Lizzie, please, spend more time with Carl).
The walkers attack at the fences was really great too. I like how it played out with the attack inside the prison as well. Walkers are everywhere ! I was really scared when they jumped in the prison, luckily (and I’ll assume it’s possible) Rick and Carl shot them all down. All of them. But others will come for sure, with all the noise they made and it will be harder to kill them all.
Last week, Carol was sent away by Rick so he had to deal with his decision when he got back. Maggie opened the door for him and after asking where was Carol, Rick was truthful (I respect that). Maggie understood right away. Guess, she was no fond of Carol. Rick also told Hershel, he shed a few tears, but no words. He cared for Carol and he is sad, he lost a friend but she is not dead ! For how long ?
The hardest person to tell is obviously Daryl. For all those who don’t believe in Daryl/Carol bond, is that a proof ? They waited for Rick to tell Daryl. I’m not saying they are in love or anything. But they do have a connection and chemistry. And it’s nice, because they are both dark and lonely but they care for each other. Daryl has not found out yet about Carol. I can not wait for his reaction ! Probably next week or….
Next week’s gonna be all about The Governor ? I must admit I had some problems with The Governor last season at first, but now he is one sick bastard and he is looking for his revenge on Rick and Michonne. I really want to see what happened to him during those 30 days and what he has planned for our survivors.
If next Sunday episode is all about The Governor and Michonne’s quest for revenge, I can not wait to watch it ! I hope they will also explore Michonne and the baby holding tears ! And then she can finally kill The Governor

Dead notes :
 • Where is Carol ? Spin off ? Kidnapped by The Governor ?
• What do you think of Carl now ?
• Hershel : how long can he survive ?
• The Governor : are you happy he is back ? Do you want to see Michonne cut his head or the other way ?
• Glenn + Maggie : they are cute together !
• No Beth nor Judith. Did you miss them ?
• Lizzie : do you want her to turn into a walkers killer or just get eaten by walkers ?
• The Governor : how long will he stay ? I want Michonne to kill him fast.
