-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 10/09/12:
Note: ABC aired two-hours of “Dancing With the Stars” on the year-ago evening.
CW: +75, NBC: +15, CBS: + 3, Fox: -11, ABC: -47
———-
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “Person of Interest” (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Dads” (Fox), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (Fox), “The Originals” (CW), “Trophy Wife” (ABC), “The Mindy Project” (Fox)
———-
-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS owns Tuesday in the overnights once again this season and last night was no exception. “NCIS” topped the night with an 11.7 rating/19 share at 8 p.m., which was on par from one year earlier, followed by “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 9.6/15 at 9 p.m.) and relocated “Person of Interest” (#1: 8.0/14 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, “Person of Interest,” which was stronger on Thursday last season, built from failed year-ago occupant “Vegas” (7.5/13 on 10/09/12) by seven percent (and the adult 18-49 rating will be notably stronger).
On NBC, a two-hour clips edition of “The Voice,” featuring the most memorable blind auditions, resonated with a second-place 6.8/11 from 8-10 p.m., fluctuating by only four-tenths of a rating point in the four half-hours. With stronger lead-in support, relocated “Chicago Fire” scored a second-place 5.0/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was 28 percent above year-ago occupant “Parenthood” (3.9/ 7 on 10/09/12) and is poised for time period victory among adults 18-49. One year earlier, “Chicago Fire” scored a similar 4.7/ 8 in the overnights on Wednesday at 10 p.m. (out of “Law & Order: SVU”).
Over at ABC, week three of highly anticipated “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” slipped by only five percent from the week two overnights, with a third-place 5.3/ 9 at 8 p.m. And that 5.6/ 9 one week earlier translated into 8.66 million viewers and a 3.3 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 (according to the live plus same day data). If “S.H.I.E.L.D.” can level off now, this is good news for ABC. Three week overnight track for “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D”: 7.7/12 – 5.6/ 9 – 5.3/ 9.
Next on the alphabet net was week three of sitcom “The Goldbergs” at a third-place 4.0/ 6 at 9 p.m., which dropped by another 10 percent from week two and was down by 22 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” (5.1/ 8). And that 4.3/ 7 one week earlier translated into 6.06 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 in the demo. The bottom line: “The Goldbergs needs to settle in now. Three week overnight track for “The Goldbergs”: 6.0/ 9 – 4.3/ 7 – 4.0/ 6.
On ABC at 9:30 p.m. was week three of “Trophy Wife” which was equal to one week earlier with a distant third-place 3.3/ 5 at 9:30 p.m. If “Super Fun Night” turns into a super flop on Wednesday (and I personally think it will), ABC would be wise to move “Trophy Wife” into the 9:30 p.m. time period out of compatible “Modern Family.”
At 10 p.m., an encore of “Scandal” in place of canceled “Lucky 7” could not compete with a 2.3/ 4 (#3) at 10 p.m.
In time period premiere news, “The Originals” on The CW opened the night with a bland 1.3/ 2 in the overnights at 8 p.m. Comparably, that was 24 percent below the 1.7/ 3 for its Thursday 9 p.m. preview last week (out of the season-premiere of parent “The Vampire Diaries”). And that 1.7 translated into 2.21 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 among adults 18-49. One year earlier, former time period occupant “Hart of Dixie” scored a 1.2/ 2 (on 10/09/12).
Next on The CW was the season-premiere of veteran “Supernatural,” which at a 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m. (#5) was 15 percent above lead-in “The Originals.” But minus the support from former lead-in “Arrow,” “Supernatural” slipped by 12 percent from its year-ago season-opener (1.7/ 3 on 10/12/12).
Fox, meanwhile, was virtually identical to one week earlier with its sitcom combination of “Dads” (#4: 2.4/ 4), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 2.5/ 4), “New Girl” (#5: 2.8/ 4) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 2.0/ 4). And the block, on average, dipped from the year-ago combination of “Raising Hope” (2.8/ 4), “Ben & Kate” (2.1/ 3), “New Girl” (3.6/ 5) and “The Mindy Project” (2.4/ 4) by an average of 11 percent in the overnights. “New Girl,” unfortunately, is no longer the hit it once was.

Winners:
ReplyDelete“NCIS” (CBS), “Marvel’s Agents of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” (ABC), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS), “Person of Interest” (CBS)
Last week he had SHIELD listed as 'Down but Not Out' this week as a winner.
And so it begins, Marc's continuous effort to find something negative to say about SPN LOL
Glad that AoS is stabilizing.
ReplyDeleteIt hurt to see Trophy Wife in the "Losers". It's a decent comedy.
I don't get it. Is saying ““Supernatural” slipped by 12 percent from its year-ago season-opener (1.7/ 3 on 10/12/12)” considered something negative? I have absolutely nothing against SPN (or you for that matter, just pointing that out), but Marc is just establishing a fact.
ReplyDeleteTrophy Wife Needs To Go Up Its Really A Good Show
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing "negative" about what Marc said on Supernatural; he is just listing the facts.
ReplyDeleteWait a few weeks and see how he treats supernatural in comparison to other shows. He fails to mention that a 1.5 was what it got on its last episode. As for the whole it slipping without its lead in, supernatural drew with/beat arrow on numerous occasions. Berman likes to twist the facts to suit his opinions.
ReplyDeleteLike I said, he said nothing negative now. It did slip compared to last season's premiere, which is the truth.
ReplyDeleteWorked for me too. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteSo CW new tuesday linup did much better than last year's Tuesday CW lineup and he still bashes it.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone really think the originals would do as well as it did with Vampire diaries as leadin?
I don't watch supernatural but any drop from last season Is because it no longer has arrow as leadin.Fans will follow supernatural to any night.
SHIELD was commissioned for a full season immediately I believe. (Could be wrong but that is what I heard)
ReplyDeleteHe said Supernatural slipped from last year, when it fact it had its best premier rating in three years. I think that just proves how pointless these overnights and Marc Berman reall are.
ReplyDeleteWTH happen to CF why so low :s
ReplyDeleteI agree, the cw had an extraordinary night in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteShocked with The Voice being so low! What happened there?! This was as sudden as last week's Shield's fall
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of that. All things considered then, yes, is amazing.
ReplyDeleteIf they keep it up, they'll have a great season up ahead. I can see already The Original/Supernatural, Arrow/The Tommorrow People combos working for them. TVD will probably be the Thursdays night stronghold and we'll need to see how Reign does. Anyway, this is a very bright start for the network
ReplyDeleteNo, the voice was a repeat last night.
ReplyDeleteLeaving Elijah boxed is the result of Daniel Gillies also starring in a show called Saving Hope, which may be shooting at the same time, so they had to juggle the scripts to let him meet those commitments. I don't know how long his contract is for or if the show will be renewed, but for at least the early part of The Originals he was shooting both shows.
ReplyDeleteIts lead-in was considerably lower since it was a repeat.
ReplyDeleteWow, Supernatural! That's excellent!
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the originals being called a loser. 0.9 In demo.Besides supernatural,The vampire diaries, and Arrow that Is very good.
ReplyDeleteShield is proving you can't just put marvel name on it.ABC should have had it on sunday nights.
Technically, the start was Monday and that went terrible, but I am not sure they had expectations for that night anyway. I am however not optimistic as you. TVD premiered lower than it should have and it could drop more than usual in subsquent weeks with the loss of the originals etc. That would be the last thing the cw needed. I also want to see how arrow holds up without its original companion show since I was of the opinion that supernatural helped arrow as much as arrow helped supernatural (and I am a HUGE arrow fan!), even though I like the pairing with the tomorrow people. I also think reign will flop badly and I won't even comment on the carrie diaries. It's a good night, but I would stop short of saying they have a great season ahead.
ReplyDeleteAoS actually beat NCIS this week. Isn't that a surprise.
ReplyDeleteso that's explain that! Didn't know it was a clip show
ReplyDeleteWhy, so it could go head to head with likely similar skewing the walking dead?
ReplyDeleteFinals pending, but yes.
ReplyDeleteI'm aware of that, he wrapped shooting on sept 22nd actually. The problem here isn't the fact that he isn't in it enough, it's the main character shift. Julie Plec and some old fans might not see this but Klaus isn't rootworthy on this show, the worst crimes on the show were so far commitet by our main character not our villain. That's the problem, we were introduced to a show that resempled Angel a lot because the main character was similar, suddenly we have the unlikable one killing this main character and replacing the him, this HAD to drop people off.
ReplyDeleteTotally! Now I'm pretty sure that Marc Berman is working off really early numbers that get adjusted as more come in, so he is reporting these preliminary numbers. But still, his constant need to interpret ratings in the most negative light for Supernatural turned out to be totally wrong.
ReplyDeletePeople thought the ratings would slip without Cote, but I didn't think it'd actually happen. I'm surprised. And I miss her so much and
ReplyDeleteActually I just read on another site that the ratings of last nights premiere were the highest SN has had in three years.
ReplyDeleteGlad I gave AOS another chance. Best episode yet, imo, but still not really grabbing me. A 15% drop from last week is not too bad, but if next week drops another 15% or more, then there will be cause for concern as it will show we haven't found the bottom yet. I know a 2.8 is well above ABC's scripted average but if it drops any further, ABC will have to weigh the production and promotion cost (which seem pretty high) versus the risk of having a "Revolution, Season 2" on their hands. I know the fans of the show really do love it, so here's hoping it can stabalize around this # in the demo.
ReplyDeleteActually Neilsen is counting tweeting during the show in the ratings now.
ReplyDeleteIt did slip in the households, which is what Marc uses for his analysis.
ReplyDeleteWasn't last night's originals a repeat of the season premiere that aired last Thursday? If it was, then why are they worried about the ratings for it this week, since it was a repeat. Next week will tell the story.
ReplyDeleteThey are counting Tweets but the are NOT included in their TV Ratings. They have a weekly table that we post here separately.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch it so i'm not positive but i think last night was epsiode 2 it switched nights. Thursday they are airing repeats i think.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a repeat. Yesterdays was a new episode.
ReplyDeleteI really hope SHIELD settles soon. Not sure if the show can afford to fall much more considering the high production cost.
ReplyDeleteActually, I think it will, seeing as Mark Pedowitz talked at length a few months back about shifting into the digital age and embracing social media to feel the pulse of the people. But we'll have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteNo, it wasn't a repeat. After premiering alongside Vampire Diaries, it moved to its regular slot on Tuesdays before Supernatural. This week's episode was the second episode of the season, 'House of the Rising Son'.
ReplyDeleteVersus last season’s opener, Supernatural was up 37% in total viewers, up 25% in A18-34 (1.0/3) and up 50% in A18-49.
ReplyDeleteFirst I know that this site is only reporting what Marc Berman says and is expressing no opinions itself and I really appreciate you getting those early numbers. Second Neener, neener Berman! Get your facts straight!
You do realise that Berman's report is for Household Ratings not the normal Early overnights?
ReplyDelete0.1 higher rating. But NCIS still has more than 10 million more viewers. I fail to see how AoS beat NCIS.
ReplyDeleteLike @DarkUFO says its a hit and an international one as well.
ReplyDelete18 to 49 ratings are all that matters, so yes AoS did beat NCIS this week.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know. I'm really tired of him deciding certain shows "should" be cancelled and then skewing every report in the most negative light on that show. Season 2-5 of Angel he harped on how Angel wasn't doing well enough in the ratings and the WB should cancel it. He's been dinging Supernatural for years about being too old and worn out and it "should" be canceled. He talks about Supernatural and its premier last year because the HH ratings are negative, but he doesn't mention what the change was from this week last Tuesday, or even from the premier of whatever was on Tuesdays last year. He talked about The Originals doing better than Hart of Dixie, but only touts the ways in which he thinks Supernatural is failing.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is he tends to do this with a lot of shows I like. We have different viewpoints. I was just being snarky about the fact that in the end he was 100% wrong. I won't do it again.
Actually, he stated SPN was down from last year's premiere out of Arrow. That's not true. SPN's premiere last year was NOT out of Arrow but of Oh Sit! If he wanted to compare premiere HH ratings year-to-year, SPN is actually UP in HH ratings from last year's premiere.
ReplyDeleteJust saw this on his site :)
ReplyDeleteThe time period premiere of drama “The Originals” opened with 1.93
million viewers and a 0.9/ 3 in the demo, which for The CW is
acceptable. And the ninth season premiere of lead-out “Supernatural”
rose to its best rating in adults 18-49 (1.2/ 3) in three years, with
the network’s best performance in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour in more than
two years in adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and women 18-49.
He accepted that Supernatural isn't all bad? Wow. Maybe I was wrong, maybe there's hope for him yet.
ReplyDeletewhat do you mean 'TVD premiered lower than it should have'. There were no set guidelines, a 1.2 premiere of for a 5th year show is impressive, and considering last season had all of the hype due to Elena and The Originals have now left, it was good.
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, the cw works like. it would be a shame for a show that has such a potential to be a great drama to go on on the ratings the cw considers acceptable enough for renewal. the show doesn't need to be a major hit but it would suck if it went down in history as a great show that no one watched.
ReplyDeleteMan, that sucks for the Originals. I don't get it, I thought it was a pretty good episode!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love how The Originals is considered a loser to this guy but it, along with Supernatural, have done well compared to past Tuesday shows on the CW.
ReplyDeleteYay for Supernatural and The Originals.
ReplyDeleteSad Person of Interest lost viewers because of the move, but at least it is still a winner.
I predict The Tomorrow People doing well, I'd be surprised if it didn't, so I think Arrow should do fine - if the viewership depended somewhat on what show it was paired with.
ReplyDeleteHurley I'm guessing is probably looking at the viewership numbers, not ratings.
ReplyDeleteMarc Berman is about as adept at analyzing TV ratings as dogs are at recognizing colors.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately its probably gonna hover around a 1.4. Its just up to abs if they wanna keep a quality show or find a crappy show with slighty better ratings to replace it
ReplyDeleteTwitter ratings will never work or matter. there are too many holes
ReplyDeleteIt did quite well for its premiere given the fact that TVD itself is not at 1.2 Expecting it to get a significant number of non TVD viewers would not be realistic as it would not be to expect it to retain all of TVD viewers. If it doesn't fall much, and I doubt it will, it will be perfectly fine.
ReplyDeleteWhere did people get that information that Shield is that costly? The cast, apart from Coulson, are a bunch of unknowns and I don't think we will be having a lot of special effects in every episode. The pilot, yes, other than that I don't believe it has a significantly different gross margin in % until I see a source.
ReplyDeleteI mean the cw needed it to be higher. I know it's unfair to compare premieres when there are high stakes (it's like saying Grey's premiere was down this year... duh last year was the super inflated post plane crash premiere) but the fact still stands. TVD has a tendency of dropping a lot from its premiere numbers which means winter and spring are not sounding promising at all. It could be that this year it has settled at this level and won't fall much or even go up, and hey, despite my complaints, I am still a fan of the show, so I want it to do well.
ReplyDeleteYou are in for a shock if you thought The Originals was gonna be like Angel. Klaus isn't a champion, he's an anti-hero. I don't even know where you came up with that idea. These are established characters, why would you think they'd change them to make them noble but tortured heroes?
ReplyDeleteIt not only tied TVD but it got higher ratings thus surpassing it.TVD was at 0.9 while Supernatural at 1.2 !!! ;)
ReplyDeleteBut it has nothing to do with not having arrow as a lead in which he said.
ReplyDeletewhich is not because that episode wasn't a season premiere. It was second episode.
ReplyDeleteThe fact is that it did get a higher rating with Arrow.
ReplyDeleteThe Originals may not be high in overnight ratings, but it is very much popular on Twitter – something that will undoubtedly play in its favour, what with the recent introduction of Nielsen Twitter TV Rating.
ReplyDeleteI just hope that The Originals is not erratically eliminated by The CW. It has the potential of being a hit show, albeit not rating-wise much like Supernatural, but one with a large and dedicated fanbase.
Marc is comparing it to last year's season premiere and having Arrow as it;s lead-in.
ReplyDeleteNo, it won't. Neilson 18-49 demographic Live-SD ratings will
ReplyDeleteI'm saying last year's season premiere was on october 3 2012. Its aired out of Oh sit final. Got a 1.4 househould rating. Actually it's up year to year
ReplyDeleteI think if SHIELD is stable again next week we will get a full season pick up announcement soon
ReplyDeleteOh well, Marc is wrong about that, I agree. But still, SPN did drop from the episode airing in the second week of October last year.
ReplyDeleteWell. Yeah but episode three got a 1.5 househould rating too. Actually 1.5 pretty normal for supernatural.
ReplyDeleteThe Originals has been one of the most talked about shows of the fall, especially from The CW's line-up. And the show already has a built-in fanbase from The Vampire Diaries and a very dedicated one at that.
ReplyDeleteThe CW would be remiss to cancel it as they can benefit from it from merchandise sale and all. And with Beauty and the Beast slipping in ratings and the new shows still uncertain, it would be a pretty bad move from The CW to cancel it. But they have been known to cancel shows just because they didn't live up to the expectations – case in point, The Secret Circle. So that's why I'm hoping for the best while expecting the worst.
Can anyone help me please?I can't see the ratings table anymore.
ReplyDeleteThis is due to you having a corrupt cookie. Delete your cookies and try to load the page again.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot! It worked :)
ReplyDeleteTwitter ratings hardly matter.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if The CW didn't cancel The Carrie Diaries with its abysmal ratings, I doubt they will cancel The Originals with mediocre ratings.
Awesome ;)
ReplyDeleteHe is not "bashing" it, he is just comparing it to previous episodes.
ReplyDeleteIt has only been commissioned for the standard 13 eps but at this rate a full season seems very likely. I can understand why they didn't pick it up for 22 eps straight away because its pretty expensive & could have flopped in this crazy world of TV ratings.
ReplyDeleteWow Supernatural :D WELL DONE <3
ReplyDeleteIt was a clip show. It's still excellent for a repeat.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural got a 1.2?! Am I reading this right? (my eyes are fuzzy today so it's quite possible I'm reading it wrong haha).
ReplyDeleteIt got a 1.2. A higher rating than it got from any episode with Arrow as a lead in.
ReplyDeleteYay for SPN! I'm glad it's doing so well. LOL at Marc being bitter about it again.
ReplyDelete3.0 FOR THE VOICE? AM I SEEING SOMETHING WRONG?!
ReplyDeleteI'm not leaning out of the window while saying that Elijah being rarely in the episode hurt 'The Originals' ratings now am I ? You offer the audience a likeble protagonist and eliminate him by the episode while replacing the likable one with the 'dick'-ish character, that obviously causes some viewers to flee.
ReplyDeleteIf I wouldn't have been a year long TVD fan and would know that he'd come back at some point in time I might've taken a leave as well, that being said I'm resentfull to watch next weeks episode as well.
You can't have two unlikable characters batteling each other, also Klaus constantly making Rebekah 'his bitch' was absolutely annoying. First he acts like a dick and then acts superior towards her because he has a stupid as f*ck plan ? The writers have made no secret out of having Klaus be the main character but the thing is that the character needs a serious update to become rootworthy
That's just a personal opinion tough
Wow at supernatural!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it flopping?
ReplyDeleteWOW at Supernatural!!!! It actually tied TVD premiere! That's really good for The CW!
ReplyDeleteThe Originals did good, 0.9 is way up from what Hart of Dixie usually did in the timeslot, and it will probably be adjusted up to 1.0 like it did last Thursdays, so that's great for The CW!
@HurleyNot at all, it was the highest Rated Drama last night. Big Success for ABC.
ReplyDeleteIt did excellent for a Tuesday night, and a 0.9 rating is good for the CW, which tends to see a lot of 0.4-0.7 ratings nowadays.
ReplyDeleteTrue. Can see some "colors", blind to others. He hates the CW for the most part, if not all, so I don't know why I'm not used to it.
ReplyDelete
