The Originals - Episode 1.01 - Always And Forever - Preview

22 Sept 2013

I was recently given the chance to watch a rough cut of “Always And Forever,” the first episode for "The Vampire Diaries" spin-off  "The Originals". When I heard it would be the backdoor pilot retold from Elijah’s perspective, I was a bit skeptical. I expected little new material and was worried that this episode would fail to capture my interest. But I was wrong.

About the episode: Just like the first episode of "The Vampire Diaries", "The Originals" starts off on a bloody note with a flashback dating back 300 years to when our favorite family of vampires arrived in New Orleans. For new viewers unfamiliar with the backstory, there is a nice summary consisting of flashbacks previously seen in episode 3.08 of "The Vampire Diaries". Few scenes from the backdoor pilot are repeated, only those necessary to the story. The episode takes us a little further with Klaus, Elijah & Haley moving into a mansion right outside of the city.
About the characters: We already know Klaus, the Original hybrid, his brother Elijah, his sister Rebekah, who even though she was still in Mystic Falls, was featured in this episode through some phone conversations, and Hayley, the werewolf who is pregnant with Klaus’ baby. The new characters are: Marcel, Klaus’ former protégé who is now king of New Orleans; Camille, a human bartender who’s also a psychology major; Sophie, a witch whose sister was murdered by Marcel and the one who lured Klaus to New Orleans; and Davina, a young witch who’s helping Marcel control the other witches.
Compared to Vampire Diaries: I definitely think this show will have a more mature vibe than "The Vampire Diaries". Instead of high school and college we get a power struggle between Klaus and Marcel. "The Vampire Diaries" fans are all too familiar with the love triangles, so far I haven’t seen much of that on "The Originals". There is some spark between Elijah and Hayley,  Klaus and Camille and, from what I’ve seen from promotional photos of the second episode, perhaps between Marcel and Rebekah, but so far that’s all speculation. Violence and blood wise it’s been very similar although I do hope they’ll make this show a little darker than "The Vampire Diaries". I mean it is war after all. I think fans of "The Vampire Diaries" will love this show. I can’t speak for those who don’t, but give it try, I think it might surprise you.

Original vampires, werewolves, witches who are sick and tired of being pushed around and a cliffhanger that has me longing for the next episode. "The Originals" is already becoming one of my favorite shows.

  1. Love this review. Makes me so much more excited about the show.

  2. Thanks for the review. I'm really loving the idea of Elijah and Hayley. Did they get a good amount of scenes in the premiere? And when you say "sparks," were there definite hints of a possible romance?

  3. Definitly a good amount of scenes. Maybe it was me wanting to see something between Hayely & Elijah but I do think they were hinting at a possible romance. Or at least someone Hayley can confide in

  4. Thank you for answering my question, Jamie! That's nice to know that they'll be sharing scenes together! And I already see many fans on different message boards wanting to see some romance happening between Elijah and Hayley. I think they would be good together because he wants to protect her. Not just the baby. But he wants to actually keep Hayley safe. And I mean, who wouldn't love that.

  5. Only a glimpse of Kol in the flashback, more of Rebekah but only in the first flashback
Unfortunately no Klebekah scenes in the present day, her only scenes were phone conversations with Elijah

so just so we're clear we'll see a little bit of Kol and we'll see some Klebekah scenes in the flashback?

  7. Is this the 10/3 sneak peak epsiode after the premiere of TVD S5? And are they going to repeat the same episode a week later on 10/8? What a drag down. I have been dreaming and obsessing over this since April and now I will have to wait two weeks for episode 2. In other news can't wait to see this episode and I can't deny how happy I am that the official premeire for this series is not with the back door pilot with saw during TVD. Which I found okay but not nearly as compelling as I thought it was going to be. And Jamie, are there going to be new scenes between Marcel and Klaus or new information revealed about Marcel? While I like the thought of this episode being told from Elijah's POV I think viewers will be confused when the series starts focusing on Klaus going foward.

  9. Agree. I want to see what tension could develop between Rebekah and her brothers since they are planning on killing Marcel.

  10. But itsnt the 10/3 a special premiere event and that the 10/8 was the time slot premiere. So wont they just repeat the episode again on the 10/8?

  16. Great review! I can't wait for the show to start and this just made me more excited. I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw sparks between Klaus and Camille and then Elijah and Hayley. With no triangles, they could be great friendships or love stories to watch.

  17. thanks for the review, I wasn't all that impressed by the backdoor pilot and was debating about this show (even though I was going to give it a few eps before I made up my mind), but your review has me approaching the show wit ha bit more anticipation, as long as it does garner more of a mature feel (much like Angel vs BtVS) and not focus so much on the relationship angles and triangles which I am afraid that Plec will do...

  19. thanks for the review. gets me even more excited than i already am. and like you i to was expecting only few new scenes from backdoor Pilot but thanks to this review its cleared.

  20. Just because of flashbacks like you can see in that still from Klaus, we can say he will be a good father.

  21. And let's not forget how it portrays women. Have you ever notice its always a girl between two guys? And when it is two girls and a guy, the girls become complete idiots.

  22. Thanks. Can't wait to see what kind of maniac Marcel will turn out to be. And I am also excited to see him and Rebekah together.

  23. thanks for the review :) I'm curious how many scenes are shown from the backdoor pilot, does the episode actually move forward from the events seen in the backdoor pilot or we still have a majority of story told from that episode for the entire 42 mins.

  24. What's "Klebekah"? I'm not clued in to that one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah definitely and it also gets a little tiring pulling a girl between two guys and ultimately one is left alone.

Definitly not a lot of repeat scenes, the episode does move forward but just a little. Most is the same timeline as the backdoor pilot

No new scenes with Marcel and Klaus together but they they both have new scenes
Judging by pictures I think they'll get into Marcel's story in episode 2

Well the first flashback features our 3 main Originals and a glimps of Kol (and with glimps I mean a shot, that's it)

  29. I don't like Hayley at all. I am looking forward to Klaus going up against Marcel. That will be interesting.

  30. I am not at all interested in an Elijah and Hayley love story but I like that he is protective of her as "family" since she is carrying his family. I just hope that they grow Hayley's character; I like the actress, just not the character (thus far).
