Nikita averaged a 0.9 in its first season and 0.5 in its second season on Friday. The Carrie Diaries averaged 0.45 in its first season. Nikita did better last year on Friday than TCD is doing this year on Monday. And Nikita is averaging 0.35 this year on Friday, only a point lower than TCD despite the graveyard night. TCD has 13 episodes done, Nikita has 67 done and is much closer to syndication. I agree it may not have deserved renewal last season, but it did fine for its first season, and being this close to syndication makes it deserve renewal this season.
You do realize how low niktas ratings are right gossip girl used to be cw's flagship show. Nikita was never a hit and should have been cancelled after season 2 you were lucky to get a third season and lucky to get a fouth too
Deadline is saying it could be anywhere from 6 to 13 and that if this limited run format works the CW may leave the door open to further installments. Sounds unlikely IMO but stranger things have happened (like TCD's renewal).
yeah, but you cannot compare Nikita's quality to Gossip Girl's. I was talking about that, I know that's not what matters when renewing a show, but that's how i feel and i was just giving my opinion. It's really unfair.
Actually, I agree. I was a huge secret circle fan but I understand that it made sense to renew beauty and the beast this year but not the secret circle last year (the cw is overall worse this year). The Carrie Diaries is a different issue though... I just can't explain it.
You cannot compare ratings in Nikita's first season to ratings this season. The CW as a whole has gone off the rails in that time and ALL ratings are so much worse than they were 3 years ago. To make an accurate comparison, you have to compare their network rankings. Last year Nikita was dead last of the shows that were renewed. This year it is dead last of shows being renewed. If I remember right, it wasn't very high up in the rankings of shows being renewed its first year wither. Quite frankly, when it comes to ratings, neither show should have been renewed.
Wrong. In its first season, Nikita was tied with 90210 and One Tree Hill as the fourth highest rated show on the CW at 91% of the network average. Hellcats and Life Unexpected were cancelled but everything else was renewed since they were all pretty much close to the network average.
The Carrie Diaries is at 73% of the network average this year. And it is much farther away from syndication with only 13 episodes aired.
I will concede that Nikita didn't deserve renewal last year, and that the ratings don't justify it this year, but now syndication does justify it. But Nikita was relatively speaking a hit in its first season and was the highest rating freshman show, whereas TCD has never been a hit and never will be.
I'm so glad that we'll have a proper ending, no matter how many episodes(I'd rather have 10-13 episodes), because we all know that Nikita is pretty much capable of delivering a mind-blowing season and ending with half a season. She is indeed unstoppable...
This just pisses me off. This Is what I didn't want if It gets renewed.Seriously Gossip Girl a major crap show may get more for final season than Nikita.Serious CW what do you think will do better on firday.Inless you move Supernatural back to friday no other show can match Nikita on friday.Arrow and Vampire diaires defently won't be going to friday
According to this article, it tied for the fifth highest after ANTM, Vampire Diaries, Smallville, and Supernatural. It beat OTH, Hellcats, Life Unexpected, and Shedding for the Wedding - all of which were canceled except OTH. Nikita has never done spectacularly in the ratings.
they will obviously move beauty and the beast or move vampire diaries beause ud think the obvious pairing would be vampire diaries and the origionals really wasent hoping that nikita got a low order 13 episodes for me is a good number to end on 16 even better but 6? only way i can think of that is if they make the episodes into 6 feature length specials maybe but a full season hour long episodes of 6 episodes :/ hmmm respect to the CW for wanting to give the fans to an extent what they want not like many others that count ratings over quality they give some leniancy towards the shows
None of the shows on The CW have EVER done spectacularly in the ratings. Also, The CW was the network that moved Nikita to Friday in the first place. If it was a modest hit and they didn't know if it would continue to do well why would they move it to Fridays? TV networks move the show to a graveyard slot and it's the show's fault? I don't think so. I am not going to be grateful to The CW for not trying absolutely everything they could to give a show that already has a brand established and a fan base after what will be, four seasons, a chance to become a bigger hit like it was closer to in the first season. At least, yes they are going to give it a hopefully satisfactory conclusion and wrap it up rather than leaving everyone in the dust, but they are the reason it didn't move well in the ratings after season one, because they put it into a graveyard slot. I don't honestly believe the great majority of people who watch television are hardcore fans who absolutely love the shows they watch. I think most of them plop on the couch, say "I like this show and I want to watch it", so the do. There may be people who have shows they "don't want to miss" but if you asked them, would you buy this show on DVD, they would say no. And possibly not even understand why they would want to do that. Who's to say The Vampire Diaries would have continued to be a massive hit if it had been moved to Fridays even if it was a big hit in it's first season. It becomes, the show's on a different night, I keep forgetting, I forgot to DVR it, and eventually. I watched it for a little while, then it moved timeslots. The fans who are addicted to shows and absolutely love them and are not just "casual viewers" are the ones who should matter more. I don't want this to sound mean, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're probably not a fan of Nikita, correct? So in all honesty, whether you know things about viewership and numbers, I don't think it's fair for you to say to us who are fans that we should be grateful for finality or The CW's patience with our favorite show. Whether you're just stating facts or not, you might not be a fan who loves a show like Nikita so I don't think you can understand the emotional attachment (whether that's silly or stupid or not) to a television show that's more of a "cult hit" rather than a "TV Network" hit and I don't think it's fair for you to get to say anything like how we should just be happy we got something of an ending at all. Why should anyone have a say in a show they don't watch? Shows like Nikita are more important than just "a numbers game" to some of us. To be frank, I hate The Carrie Diaries, but when I thought about how it could be a cult kind of show like Nikita I realized it would be nice for fans of that show to have it on the air as long as it didn't affect my favorite show. But in all actuality, yeah Nikita was 21 episodes away from syndication and has been on the air for four years, whereas The Carrie Diaries dropped below the millions in viewers halfway through it's first season run, and it hasn't been established as a show the way Nikita has. Fans of TCD may not be as upset if that show was cancelled as it was only on one year. Nikita's been on for four.
I also don't think the original poster was talking bad about CW because of ratings towards Nikita, it was because Nikita is an intelligent and gripping and yes, emotional, action spy show, that's well-written with great characters, and TCD is mindless fluff and kind crummy in comparison to shows a network would rather have on their schedule and lineup.
Actually I am a fan of Nikita. I think it along with Burn Notice are the best action shows on TV. I also know a lot about loving cult shows with poor ratings and fighting to keep your show on the air. I've been there, done that many times. I've also had shows I love get cancelled without any consideration at all by the network. So yes, I do think Nikita fans should be happy to be getting a resolution in the same way Fringe fans, of which I was also one, should have been happy with FOX for getting a final shortened season. The simple fact is that no show "deserves" to be renewed if it has crummy ratings and ALL shows have passionate fans who think their show is the best out there. That is always an opinion. TV is a business and its client is advertisers not fans. If a show does not make money, the network does not owe it to anyone to continue with said show. My favorite hand soap is no longer being made because that product line was not successful. I hate it but that's business. The same goes for TV. It may be more painful to those who are avid fans but shows need to go in order to make room for new products. It makes sense that those that do the worst are the ones to go first. It is not personal. It's business and since Nikita has dodged the bullet for years now, I think it is incredibly gracious of the CW to pay for however many more episodes it does. You can bet that other networks do not give the same consideration to their shows' fans.
I do not prescribe to the VD lead-in theory since no show has ever been really successful after VD. The closest was Supernatural if I remember right and that already had a built-in fan base.
TCD's ratings didnt really warrant a renewal my guess there were other factors involved. TCD will be cancelled at the end of its 13 episode second season barring a ratings miracle.
I'm not a Secret Circle fan, it's just that it was cancelled despite relatively high ratings last year while shows with worse retention (BATB) and worse ratings (TCD) have been renewed this year.
I'm glad we're getting a proper send-off, and I'm kind of frustrated we only got 6 episodes for that. But come on, after 3 pure quality seasons, I'm sure those 6 episodes will be worth a full season!
It's a small number of episodes, but I am glad that we are at least getting a proper close. I've always wondered how Nikita would end, it's probably going to be great in any case.
With 90210 and gossip girl gone, TCD is a replacement for those chick flick series.
I was thankful for all the renewals CW gave Nikita. It's an amazing show but it never did as well as it should've and its been given many chances.
Ppl like to bash Gossip Girl but you have to remember it did amazing in its first season and carried through until at least the 3rd. It may have fizzled out but it was at least there.
Ppl who are puzzled by CW's choices are forgetting who their core target-market is.
I'm very happy and relieved the show will get a chance to wrap things up and have a proper finale. That being said, until Upfronts I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that it's 10-13 episodes. 6 episodes barely qualifies as a season, it's more like an extended epilogue. While they've wrapped up some storylines (like the last black box and the whole issue of Division and the President), there's still enough up in the air that it would be really difficult to resolve it so quickly. Who knows what new can of worms will be opened in next week's finale, too. I know a rushed and unsatisfying ending is better than none, obviously, but if The CW could just order a few more episodes, I think it would make a lot of difference in terms of how well the series ends.
As for the oft-discussed issue of whether Nikita fans should be grateful to the network, I'm sorry but I just can't feel that way, for 2 reasons. One, I believe The CW is a lot more to blame for the god-awful ratings than Nikita itself, given the endless scheduling and promotion mistakes they made in my opinion. And two, we all know The CW would have unceremoniously cancelled the show on a cliffhanger if it wasn't for The WB strong-arming them into a renewal (just look how they cancelled 90210 days before production on the season ended). Whatever episode number they settle on is probably a compromise, since the network wants as few as possible and the studio as many as possible.
Yay! Very glad that Nikita is renewed, at least to give a proper farewell season. I'm still so grateful to Fox for giving Fringe a final 10-episode final season to wrap up. Looking forward to the Nikita wrap-up storytelling arc!
What is the source? I still don't buy it. I am getting close to buying it with so many sources saying this, but I will still be shocked and that would imply me having to change a lot in my prediction model.
Okay. I can agree with that. I too was shocked that TCD got renewed. But from my understanding, TCD was doing extremely well online and that was an important factor in it getting renewed.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I want more but am very glad they renewed
ReplyDeleteThis is the source http://tvline.com/2013/05/09/nikita-renewed-the-cw-carrie-diaries/
ReplyDeleteNikita got a 0.2 for its last new episode need I say more. Not that carrie diaries deserved its renewal too.
ReplyDeleteBetter than nothing.
ReplyDeleteThis is all wrong!! CW! You gave Gossip Girl 10 freaking eps and you're considering giving only 6 to Nikita?? wtf no!!!
ReplyDeleteTV By The Numbers is reporting that a 6 episode order is likely the count.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'd love more eps I'll take it. At least this way we get a proper wrap up to the show.
ReplyDeleteI wanna have sure!!! We want at least 13 episodes!!! C'mon CW, be smart for once...
ReplyDeleteAccording to Deadline it makes more financial sense for The CW to keep it's existing shows because of it's revenue from Netflix and Hulu deals.
ReplyDeleteNikita averaged a 0.9 in its first season and 0.5 in its second season on Friday. The Carrie Diaries averaged 0.45 in its first season. Nikita did better last year on Friday than TCD is doing this year on Monday. And Nikita is averaging 0.35 this year on Friday, only a point lower than TCD despite the graveyard night. ReplyDelete6 episode final season??? That's ridiculous!! we should at least have 13.

ReplyDeleteTCD renewal really is puzzling
ReplyDeleteThey even have a Craig tweet. Thanks. So it really is true. I am very shocked... Can't understand the financial sense of making it.
ReplyDeleteThe CW is puzzling. I can't even imagine what the Secret Circle fans are feeling right now.
ReplyDeleteThe CW seems to be the only network willing to give a show the chance to close out properly. Good looking out for the fans CW!
ReplyDeleteyeah, but you cannot compare Nikita's quality to Gossip Girl's. I was talking about that, I know that's not what matters when renewing a show, but that's how i feel and i was just giving my opinion. It's really unfair.
ReplyDeleteWe might hear about a syndication deal soon. Was there any info about any syndication deal for 90210 btw?
ReplyDeleteActually, I agree. I was a huge secret circle fan but I understand that it made sense to renew beauty and the beast this year but not the secret circle last year (the cw is overall worse this year). The Carrie Diaries is a different issue though... I just can't explain it.
ReplyDeleteNot that I am aware but don't follow it closely.
ReplyDeleteThis season alone was a gift to Nikita fans. To get a wrap up next year should inspire gratitude not complaint.

People complaining about the episode count should shut up and be grateful it was renewed at all. I'm just glad the show will have a proper ending.
ReplyDeletePlease, be 10...
ReplyDeleteI'd rather 13...

ReplyDeleteI'm hoping 10 then, 6 episodes is way too little.
ReplyDeleteNikita Fans, fight for a full 22 epi Season!
ReplyDeleteActually TCD = Nikita Season 2, Nikita's 1st season had TVD as a lead in.
ReplyDeleteSo it might get Cult numbers next season?
ReplyDeleteExcept for Secret Circle, Cult, Ringer, etc. But yes, compared to the other networks.
ReplyDeleteThat is a matter of opinion on both shows. There are hardcore fans on both sides who think their show is vastly superior to the other one.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was already pretty much known beforehand, we just didn't know the exact number of episodes.
ReplyDeleteActually I am a fan of Nikita. I think it along with Burn Notice are the best action shows on TV. ReplyDeletemy guess is cost?
ReplyDeleteagain thats probably cost related
ReplyDeleteTCD's ratings didnt really warrant a renewal my guess there were other factors involved. TCD will be cancelled at the end of its 13 episode second season barring a ratings miracle.

ReplyDeleteAt least they did not cancel it right away! 6-10 is not much, but at least they can wrap it up nice!

ReplyDeleteGee that's not much. Please let it be 10.
ReplyDeleteSo are they planning on dumping half their pilots on Friday?
ReplyDeleteTCD will probably be shipped to Fridays.
ReplyDeleteShould be at least 13. 22 for syndication hello?! If this 6-10 episodes crap is due to renewing TCD I'll be uber pissed!
