-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Tuesday overnight sweep for CBS care of NCIS (12.8 rating/20 share – No. 1 for the evening), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (9.8/15) and freshman drama Vegas (5.9/10). But retention for Vegas of just 61 percent out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of NCIS: Los Angeles (9.7/15), plus the expected older audience skew, means life past season one is a long-shot. One year earlier, former 10 p.m. time period occupant Unforgettable was stronger at a 7.0/12 in the overnights (out of a 10.1/16 for NCIS: Los Angeles) on 2/21/12. Don’t forget that Unforgettable returns this summer for season two.

In series-premiere news, CW drama Cult was DOA with an embarrassing 0.8/ 1 from 9-10 p.m., which was 27 percent below failed year-ago occupant Ringer (1.1/2 on 2/21/12). Retention for Cult out of lead-in Hart of Dixie (#1: 1.1/ 2 from 8 p.m.) was 73 percent, and there was a loss of one-tenth of a rating point (or 12 percent) in the second half-hour (0.8/ 1 to 0.7/ 1). Since most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10-20 percent in week two, forget about confusing Cult.

In season-premiere news, the return of older-skewing retooled ABC crime solver Body of Proof was a positive with a 5.2/ 9 (#2) at 10 p.m. Compared to its year-ago overnights (4.7/ 8 on 2/21/12), this was an increase of 11 percent for Body of Proof. The retention out of a Tuesday 9 p.m. edition of The Bachelor (#2, 6.1/10 from 9-10 p.m.) was solid at 85 percent (although the young adult demo retention will not be as strong). And Body of Proof beat competing Smash on NBC (#3: 2.8/ 5) by a considerable 86 percent.

Earlier in the evening on the alphabet net was cooking competition The Taste at a distant second-place 3.8/ 6 at 8 p.m. Not so tasty, unfortunately.

Over at NBC, two episodes of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers (original and repeat) averaged a 3.1/ 5 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. (8 p.m.: #3: 3.2/ 5; 8:30 p.m.: #3, 3.0/ 5). Minus the lead-in support of former (and returning) lead-in The Voice, once promising Matthew Perry sitcom Go On finished fourth in the 9 p.m. half-hour with a 2.6/ 4. And that led into also freshman sitcom The New Normal at a third-place 2.3/ 4 at 9:30 p.m. Note to the producers and writers of The New Normal: A depressing storyline like last night may not be the best way to attract an audience in search of some laughs.

Aforementioned Smash on NBC at 10 p.m. (#3: 2.8/ 5) dipped by 24 percent from year-ago occupant Parenthood (3.7/ 6 at 2/21/12). Good intentions and a quality production do not, unfortunately, necessarily lead to mass appeal.

Deteriorating Fox capped off the evening with Raising Hope (#4: 2.6/ 4), a repeat of New Girl (#4: 1.9/ 3), the original installment of New Girl (#3: 3.3/ 5) and freshman entry The Mindy Project (#4: 2.2/ 3), which dipped by 33 percent from New Girl. One year earlier, New Girl was considerably stronger with a 4.5/ 7 (out of a 5.5/ 8 for Glee).

In late night, David Letterman on CBS (2.9/ 7 to 2.2/ 6 by half-hour: - 8 percent from the year-ago evening) finished first in the 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. hour with an average 2.6/ 7 in the overnights. Next was Jay Leno on NBC at a 2.4/ 6 (3.0/ 7 to 1.8/ 5: - 8 percent), followed by relocated Jimmy Kimmel on ABC at a 2.1/ 6 (2.5/ 6 to 1.6/ 5). Diluted Nightline, which scored a 3.2/ 8 in the overnights in the 11:30 p.m. half-hour one year earlier, followed with a 1.3/ 4 at 12:30 a.m.

Jimmy Fallon on NBC (1.3/ 4 to 1.1/ 4) and Craig Ferguson on CBS (1.3/ 4 to 1.0/ 4) were tied, each with a 1.2/ 4 from 12:30-1:30 a.m. And Carson Daly closed the night for NBC with a typical 0.8/ 3 in the overnights at 1:30 a.m. Some things never change.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)
