CW Developing Mary Queen Of Scots Teen Drama

24 Oct 2012

The project, which was sold directly to the CW and laid off at CBS TV Studios, is a fantastical reimagining of the teenage Mary Queen of Scots.

Mary was 6 days old when she succeeded her father, King James V of Scotland, to the throne. Her mother, Mary of Guise, was French, and Mary spent most of her childhood and teen years in France while Scotland was ruled by regents. She was 16 when she married Francis, Dauphin of France, who became King of France the next year but died a year later, leaving Mary a widow at age 18. The CW’s project is described as Game Of Thrones meets Marie Antoinette — if Marie Antoinette had a girl posse and was coming of age as a warrior queen. It’s about the secret history of survival at French Court amidst fierce foes, dark forces, and a world of sexual intrigue. In addition to Reign, the CW has another drama in the works that is set in a kingdom, the Hunger Games-esque The Selection, which is awaiting a new script.

  1. I gotta say, a CW show with S. Coppola's Marie Antoinette's aesthetics about political intrigues sounds like it could be really something. It has all the landmarks of a CW show. I think they could make it work, color me interested.

  2. Got to say that the description for this makes me think they are trying gossip girl in costume. I'll pass.

  3. I think I'd be super excited if this was not a CW show, being obsessed with women's history, but I cannot see this going beyond Gossip Girl with fancy historical costumes. I still might watch it for the costumes.

  4. We just got done discussing her in my Tudor/Stuart England classes, so I'm in, tbh.

  5. Hmmm judgement still out. Right now I'm not interested as teen drama turns me off immediately when it's a CW show, but maybe I'll check it out if the trailer looks good enough.

  6. .
Did they seriously write it's Game of Thrones meets Marie Antoinette? XD
Wait, Mary Queen of Scots was a "Warrior Queen"? XD
    Ya..... No.

    That RIDICULOUS description aside....
It is a very interesting time in history that could make for a very good TV series. Too bad the CW will angst it up and wrap it up in the girl-power fashion of today instead of sticking to a more accurate historical identity.

    Pass. Oh such a pass.

  8. That is actually exactly what this sounds like. Castles instead of penthouses and messengers instead of cellphones.

  9. Oh god CW how do you continue to exist?

  10. Interesting proposal. Let's see a pilot.

PS. Stop comparing Hunger Games to The Selection!! They're NOTHING alike.
