Heroes Review - Episode 4x18 - "The Wall"

The Wall
Peter tries to free Sylar from his own mental prison, Samuel's plan takes full shape and the past is revealed about the man with the horn rimmed glasses. Noah has an interesting past and it's one that would have been a lot better had it been revealed to us at an earlier point in the series.
In order to see what Noah has been hiding all of this time Samuel's uses Damien in the house of mirrors. The old Noah that used to be a normal guy was great, he was a young man selling cars and had a girlfriend. One night when Noah was sitting in his house the two ordered Chinese food. Noah went to the door to get the order and he was greeted by a man with telekinesis. He pushes Noah against the wall and attempts to steal money from Noah and his girlfriend. The man uses telekinesis on Noah's girlfriend and pushes her into their glass table and she is stabbed right through the heart. This event is the main reason that Noah wanted to join the Company, because someone with abilities took away the one person he loved. Other flashbacks with Noah involve seeing him kill someone with special abilities for the first time, which made him the perfect man for the Company. There was also a memory of Noah meeting Thompson and accepting his role at the Company as "Mr. bag and tag". Noah admits that everything Claire saw in the house of mirrors was true and that he was a product of his experiences. But Samuel still had two more things for Claire to see, how the Company loosely arranged Noah's marriage and him intimidating Gretchen to get Claire back. These all added a certain layer to Noah's character and it was interesting to see Claire's reaction.
But the best storyline of the episode was Peter and Sylar. Back in "The Art of Deception" Matt trapped Sylar alone inside his own mind for what he thought was all of eternity. Peter came in at the end of the episode to break Sylar out and no one really knew how these two characters were going to interact with each other. As the audience we knew at the end of "The Art of Deception" that Peter was probably going to free Sylar but we didn't know how. It sure took them quite a while, what seemed to them to be almost a decade took half a day. It started out with neither wanting to talk to each other. Sylar thought initially that it was his mind playing tricks on him that Peter was stuck in there but that ultimately wasn't the case. Peter knew that in order to escape an environment with no one around he was going to have to work with Sylar, when he figured this out is when "the wall" came in.
"The Wall" was meant to symbolize not only the brick wall Matt had built in his basement, but the wall that Sylar had built up with the outside world. I guess this means that he and Claire really are alike. Peter sees this as his ticket out so he grabs a sledge hammer and begins to try and crack it. This attempt goes on for what he says is several more years but he gets nowhere. Peter returns after going somewhere and Sylar is sitting in front of the wall. Sylar attempts to tell Peter that he has changed for the better but he doesn't believe it. Peter is still angry at Sylar for killing Nathan and he thinks that as long as he remains mad at Sylar he will remember Nathan. At the exact point when Peter lets go of his anger the brick wall begins to collapse and Peter and Sylar emerge from the alternate reality.
In order to set up the finale a scene is shown where Claire goes to rescue Noah. Samuel thinks that if Claire is given more time to think about what Samuel said that she might consider changing sides. Samuel decides to bury Claire and Noah inside the souvenir trailer and it isn't clear as to whether or not the two will survive.
Things are looking great for the finale and it should be nice to see how the show is going to wrap everything up for the audience. Several of the fansites are trying to push for heroes to trend on Twitter using the hashtag #heroes. If you want to join in the effort please do so and make sure to watch the finale. Also feel free to leave any comments about how you think the volume will end. Who do you think is going to die? What will happen to Samuel and the Carnvial? And do you agree or disagree with my thoughts on "The Wall". Until then viewers!

The Art of Deception
Throughout the episode "the art of deception" wasn't just the title it described what was happening. The two storylines that were given during the episode involved Sylar visiting Matt to see if his problem could be solved and Samuel making sure that his family is safe.
The pairing of Sylar and Matt isn't a new one, actually it has already happened once this season and that turned out in an interesting way for the both of them. This time the meeting is wanted by Sylar but not Matt. Sylar comes to Matt to ask him to purge every power that Sylar has ever had, because he feels like it is the only way that he could have a normal life. Matt thinks that this can't happen but because Sylar wants it so bad he does try. Matt doesn't try to hard during these first couple of attempts and Sylar knows it so he pins Janice the wall and gives Matt some motivation, "Purge me of these powers Parkman, or I will use them, I will use them all." This is a threat that Matt takes seriously and he agrees to help Sylar but what he does is far more interesting than that. Matt traps Sylar in his own mind alone and with no clear path to get out. Matt then places Sylar's body behind a brick wall in his basement, but Peter comes in and wants to get Sylar out of there and it seems like he has every intention of doing so at any cost to him.
Another angle of deception that occured in this episode was through Samuel Sullivan and the carnival. Throughout the season Samuel has constantly deceived almost everyone and it has been an interesting experience seeing his role and what he will do for personal gain. In this episode Samuel's goal was to bring his family back to his side and rally them behind a common cause. This plan involved making Noah the scape goat, by making everyone in the Carnival believe that Noah wanted to kill Samuel. Noah did want to kill Samuel but he didn't go through of it because of Claire. It seems that in these past couple of episodes Claire has turned a new leaf over and she is acting like a different character. Claire decided that to keep everyone safe she would try and appeal to Samuel to turn himself peacefully without anyone getting hurt. This event however is where chaos begins and the rest of the season changes course.
Noah is ready to fire upon Samuel but he is beaten to it by a phantom shooter, the shooter strikes Samuel, Claire, Lydia and throughout the Carnival. Noah scans the grounds to look for the real shooter and it turns out to be Eli. Eli was the one who fired upon his leader and ultimately is the one to kill Lydia, who dies in the arms of Samuel. Lydia also learns the truth behind the event as the last thing she sees. It was a moving end to see her learn the truth as she died at the hands of her rival.
As the event continues Eli brings Noah down to the Carnival and blames him for everything that happens. As Noah is dragged along the ground he sees Claire and tells her he didn't fire. She believes him and tries to get her message heard but Samuel immediately drowns it out in a very smart decision. Samuel is great at getting the members of the Carnival to feel whatever he wants them to at the correct time and it is also a tribute to how good of an actor Robert Knepper is.
Overall this episode did a pretty good job at setting the story forward. The Carnival is still by far the most interesting story and it should be interesting to see where it ends up. Lydia dying in the manner in which she did shows how truly psychotic he is. In order to kill a family member just so that everyone else will fear him is scary. The Sylar story line is definitely turning, the once serial killer now turned hopeful good guy wants to get as far away from his former life and we'll see if this is his true intentions or he is doing it to get what he wants.
Next week's episode is entitled "The Wall" and is directed by Allan Arkush, who left at the end of last season because his position was eliminated. It will be good to see what Arkush can bring to this revived style of season 4. The stories will focus on Peter and Sylar trying to break through their problems and Samuel trying to convince Claire to come to his side. We'll see how it goes because it is the second to last episode before the finale.

Here is the latest weekly SpoilerTV Cancellation Quotient table and the first one for 2010.
NOTE:We've changed the color coding slightly to make it easier to understand.. hopefully :) Any questions/errors please let me know in the comments.
I wonder which shows will be next on the chopping board? Melrose Place? Numb3rs? Cold Case? Are Fringe and Heroes still in danger?
Ugly Betty is the latest causality.
This index is by no means a 100% accurate guide about if your show is safe or in danger and should be seen as a bit of fun.
So how safe is your show? Sound off in the comments. Also if you spot any mistakes or have any questions please let me know in the comments.
1) The Higher the number the more likely a show is to get cancelled and conversely the lower the number the safer it is.
2) Not all shows appear in the labels of this post due to a change Google implemented on blogger that only allows so many Labels.
3) This is an ongoing exercise that I hope to refine each week to make the index more accurate.
4) This is a weekly update of all the shows using our own formula based on the viewing numbers and some other factors such as Network, Day of Week, DVR Numbers and +7 numbers,DVD/Blu-Ray Sales, Syndication and Torrents etc to make our own SpoilerTV Cancellation Index.
5) Shows still might not get renewed despite good numbers due eg a show coming to an end of run eg ER had good numbers but had just run it's course etc or could be due to key cast wanting to leave after their contracts. An example might be Supernatural if it's two leads, Jared and Jensen wanted out, would Supernatural be renewed even if it had good numbers etc
6) New Shows that have been picked up for a Full Season are marked in Dark Green
7) Shows that have been renewed for a New Season are marked in Blue
