Lucifer - Sympathy For The Goddess - Advance Preview: “Revelations”

In this Season 2 penultimate episode things kick up a notch in preparation for what promises to be an intense season finale. While everything starts off like a normal run of the mill episode, things quickly escalate. The last half is full of emotional moments, big surprises, and at least one major shocking revelation. Don’t let the seemingly typical start of the episode fool you, because the moment it seems safe to let your guard down things ramp up rapidly. There is even one epic sized battle that ends on an unexpected note.

As has become the recent trend, the group breaks off into different partnerships. In this episode, the biggest unusual partnership occurs between Chloe and Charlotte. There is a ton of mistrust between them, understandably, but to succeed at their task they must try and figure out how to trust one another at least a tiny bit. Though, that might be much easier said than done. Through this partnership, Chloe learns something that might just bring her a certain amount of understanding to some of the things that have happened this season.

Another great pairing in this episode is between Lucifer and Maze. While this one isn’t all that unusual, they are on and off best friends, after all, it is one that we haven’t seen much of this season due to their rift that has been lingering around. Their attempt to help Dr. Linda save her practice leads to some of the best humorous and heartfelt moments of the episode. Lesley-Ann Brandt, Tricia Helfer, and Rachael Harris really get to shine as their characters take a bit of a front seat in the stories this week. Not to say the rest of the cast isn’t amazing as usual because they are, but these three go above and beyond even their normal amazing work. Brandt especially delivers a performance that delves deeply into the core of who Maze is. Despite all the exceptional performances Brandt has delivered throughout the run of the series, this one is definitely high up on the list of her best. The scene being referenced here will be quite evident. Dr. Linda will also get some really strong scenes that show off a side of her that hasn’t been seen before. Through all of it, Lucifer finds himself stuck right in the middle of everything that is going on with the women in his life.

While everyone is off dealing with business, Amenadiel is left behind to fend for himself which gives him the prime opportunity to form a new bond of his own as he teams up with Dan. Their pairing shouldn’t work, but it does to hilarious results. The writers are really hitting on some great partnerships in this batch of episodes and this one is no exception. These two have more in common than one would think. Dan has some stuff going on that is confusing, to say the least, and he could definitely use a friend and it’s good for Amenadiel to have someone outside of his family, especially given everything that is going on with them. This is perhaps the best material Amenadiel has gotten in this last batch of episodes and Dan gets some pretty good material too. Look for a very surprising person to stand up for Dan with another character. It's a bit of an unexpected moment that does raise a couple questions. There are also some interesting things revealed about Amenadiel and Lucifer's younger days.

Despite the fact that Chloe and Lucifer only work together minimally, they do still share a couple really strong scenes that fans are likely to adore. Ella gets a few more scenes than the usual, one of which involves a fun moment with Charlotte. And the ending is best only described as unexpected, not just for the audience but for the characters involved as well. By the time the episode ends the fate of one character will be left unknown while several others are left with pressing matters that will require attention in the season finale. As stated at the beginning of this preview, don't be fooled by the way the episode starts. The case of the week isn't really much more than an avenue to bring Charlotte into the core of the episode, but it does nicely touch on some of the themes that have dominated her story throughout the season. This episode sets up a lot and makes it clear that the season finale is going to be a jam-packed episode that will likely leave everyone desperate for the Fall to arrive.

Be sure to not miss this penultimate episode of the season when it airs on Monday, May 22nd on FOX at 9/8c.

Also, before concluding this preview it feels only right to wish Timothy Omundson (God Johnson) the best wishes of this fandom as he recovers from a minor stroke. Make no mistake, just because the word “minor” is placed in front of it makes it no less serious. He is a phenomenal actor who vividly brought God Johnson to life in a spectacular way and deserves nothing but good wishes for a speedy recovery. Take a moment to send good positive thoughts of recovery his way.

Here are some quotes to tide you over:

“So our lead on the killer is a pair of butt boob eyes? It’s a great start.”
“Let’s get this pajama party started.”
“Not all kids appreciate what their parents have given them.”
“For what it’s worth, I like you a hell of a lot more than I like your brother.”
“Lucifer, that’s even worse.”

Hit the comments with what you hope for this episode. What do you think will happen? Any guesses on the big surprises and reveals?
