MacGyver - Awl - Review

Angus MacGyver became Dr.Mac in today’s episode. I have to say this is the best out of the series so far. It really show's Macs range of skills. He impromptu operation with a driving license, windshield wipers and tire jack on Ralph (Oliver Cooper), an accountant working with a terrorist group, then kill Ralph and bring him back to life. It was very interesting to see MacGyver build and solve situations all the way through the episode as in the others we’ve only had a small amount of scene which included it.

The makeshift item I liked most was when he had to ‘kill’ Ralph with a ballpoint pen, eye drops and dental floss. He used these items to make a syringe to house crushed up blood pressure tablets and water. He could then inject it into Ralph's heart to drop his blood pressure so no one could find his pulse. The majority of the episode was ralph dying and it was nice to have a little less of his annoying-ness on the screen while he was ‘dead’. All of this to find hid the D77 terrorist group. A little much, don’t you think?

Once Ralph has been brought make alive, with a shot of Glucose, we find that he is being put into witness protection and he wants to become a better person after ‘staring death in the face’.

Even though it was packed with actions and gadgets, there wasn’t much character development for any of the characters. We got a bit of information on MacGyver’s family, mostly his and his dad's relationship. At the start we see Mac and Jack sitting by Jack Dalton Sr. grave talking about their fathers, Jack asks if Mac has talked to his father lately which Mac replies with ‘It’s been a long while.’ Jack then says ‘After what he did, you’ll want to fix that, trust me.’ This is leaving many questions unanswered such as what did is dad do? Why hasn’t Mac talked to him for so long? In the ending scene, we see that Mac starts to write a letter to him after listening to Jacks advice. Bozer’s character was useless, there was no point to his character this episode. The scene he was in could have been used for the storyline.

The episode could do with some work but overall, it good. If the show is getting better and better each episode, by the end of the season it could be amazing. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

rating: 7.5/10
