The 100 - Wanheda: Part One (Season Premiere) - Advance Preview and Dialogue Teasers

The 100 returns January 21st with its highly anticipated season 3 premiere. Having seen the episode in advance, I'm here to give you a general impression of the episode without giving too much away (because, you know, #spoilerpolice is watching!).

Let me kick off this preview with a picture from the show that we're all familiar with. A picture that is rather old, from a time where everything actually looked bright and sunny.

How is this picture relevant for the season 3 premiere? For starters, it reminds us how much the show has grown from its pilot. Hundred teenagers landed on a supposedly uninhabited Earth and thought they would do nothing but partying. They were very wrong, as evidenced by everything that happened over the past two seasons. However, this picture is also relevant in another way. It's possible that after you have seen the season 3 premiere, this will be your exact reaction. The characters you have grown to love (and in some cases, hate) are back with what is sure to be an epic season.

In this episode, we gradually check in with each and every character and see how they're doing. There will be a three-month time jump so it's obvious you can expect quite a few changes in the lives of the characters. At least one person has gotten a bit crazy (or crazier), while other people are experiencing quite some pain (whether physical or mental pain). There are also a lot of recurring guest players returning in the premiere. On top of that, several new characters will be introduced this season. In the premiere, we meet at least two new players: Niylah (played by Richard Harmon's sister Jessica) and Roan (played by Zach McGowan).

Besides checking in with the characters, this episode also resumes old storylines and starts new ones. The title 'Wanheda' is Trigadesleng and means Commander of Death, which refers to Clarke. If you have seen the trailers for the season, you know that someone says that Clarke is being hunted by everyone. We will learn why these people are after her and what they want with her. Forrtunately, she is not all by herself as her friends and family are still looking for her and she has also found a new ally. Meanwhile, we will continue to learn more about the Grounders and the coalition between the 12 clans, and Jaha's journey with ALIE sets up a whole new mythology for the show. Circumstances in Camp Jaha have also changed in the three months. The camp has a new name, and the development and use of technology has significantly increased. They are now using cars, although some people prefer a horse. Abby is still pulling double duty as a doctor and as Chancellor, while Kane continues to be her second-in-command.

All in all, this episode is a great way to come back after nearly a year-long hiatus. Having said that, I watched the first four episodes back-to-back and in that context, I thought the episode was a bit slow. That is partly because of the time jump, which means you gradually get to know what changed in those three months and where every character is at. But also, the premiere is just a set-up for what's to come. However, after rewatching the episode a second time without watching the other three, I appreciated the premiere much more. It is safe to say that the episode is primarily character-driven as there are a lot of great character moments, but of course there will also be some shit going down. As always, the acting in the episode is top-notch.

Finally, below are some dialogue teasers for you. Feel free to speculate in the comment section on who might have said it and what they are talking about. However, I won't confirm nor deny your guesses.
1. "Yu gonplei ste odon." (Translation: "Your fight is over.")
2. "He's getting worse, isn't he?"
3. "They're trying to forge a lasting peace and so am I."
4. "And here I thought I was the one losing my mind."
5. "We need every gun we got."
6. "You pushed [SPOILER] away because he was trying to help."
7. "There can't be an us or them if we want to survive."

The 100 returns January 21st at 9/8c on the CW. You can check out the promo for the entire season below.
