11th January 2018 - Premiere Date Pushed

Gambit is seeing its release date move from Feb. 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. The Channing Tatum vehicle just lost its director — Gore Verbinski exited Thursday — and the search is on for a replacement.

But studio insiders believe the project, which is described as having a heavy comedic tone as it revolves around a heist, will do better as a summer Marvel movie.

11th January 2018 - Director Gore Verbinski Exits

Gore Verbinski, who had come aboard to direct the long-in-the-works X-Men spinoff Gambit, is pulling off of the movie. This was an amicable split, we hear, owing to scheduling issues. Channing Tatum remains aboard as the lead role.

20th November 2017 - Lizzy Caplan in Talks to Star

Lizzy Caplan is headed for the X-Men universe.

The actress is in negotiations to star in Gambit opposite Channing Tatum, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. 5th October 2017 - Gore Verbinski in Talks to Direct

Gore Verbinski, the director behind the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, is in talks to direct Gambit.

The movie kickstarts the stalled project that has seen Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt come and go as helmers on the long-in-development X-Men spinoff. Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Wyatt exied in October 2015 while Liman left in August 2016.

Channing Tatum is attached to star in the film as the New Orleans-based mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and whose weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards.

13th January 2017 - Film Still Happening With Channing Tatum Attached

  • 24th August 2016 - Director Exits
Doug Liman is no longer directing Gambit. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith director has moved off Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off, which still has Channing Tatum attached to star.

Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter the studio is still intent on starting production in January and has Josh Zetumer on writing duties. A source describes split as a “mutual parting of ways.”

A search is already underway for a new director to helm the project that tells of a New Orleans-based mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and whose weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards.

  • 29th February 2016 - Pulled from FOX's Release Schedule
Following the success of the R-rated Deadpool, 20th Century Fox is making plans to further its superhero universe. The studio has scheduled two untitled Marvel movies for release on Oct. 6, 2017, and Jan. 12, 2018.

Simultaneously, a rep for Fox confirmed that Gambit has been “unset” from its release date. Directed by Doug Liman and starring Channing Tatum as the card-slinging mutant, the film was originally set for release on Oct. 6 of this year.

It’s possible Fox merely pushed Gambit to the 2017 release, since the film has yet to begin filming. While comic book fans speculate what could be coming for those slots, the post-credits scene for Deadpool teased Cable for Deadpool 2, a sequel that seems all but assured given the first film’s status as the highest-grossing X-Men movie in the U.S.

Elsewhere, Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) was reportedly developing an X-Force movie for Fox, and the studio previously announced an adaptation of New Mutants from Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars).

  • 17th September 2015 - Director Rupert Wyatt Exits
UPDATE: I’ve now got confirmation that Rupert Wyatt has in fact exited Gambit. There are rumors that there was some disagreement over script and budget, but the director’s camp says it came down to timing. The film was supposed to start in November, and it moved to March, clashing with another commitment, though they wouldn’t say what the other film is. Wyatt issued this statement: “I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

  • 25th August 2015 - Lea Seydoux Offered Lead Female Role
EXCLUSIVE: Now that Channing Tatum has been set for Fox’s Rupert Wyatt-directed X-Men spinoff Gambit, the studio is working on locking his female lead.

This is a hotly contested job, and they’ve got a trio of the best and brightest testing next week.

I’m hearing that Rebecca Ferguson, a revelation in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, will be testing; so will Lea Seydoux, who moved from Blue Is The Warmest Color to the 007 film Spectre; and finally Abbey Lee, who moved from Mad Max: Fury Road to the Alex Proyas-directed Gods Of Eygpt to landing the co-lead in the Nicolas Winding Refn-directed film Neon Demon. Stay tuned.

  • 29th July 2015 - Channing Tatum Planning to Exit after his Deal falls in Jeopardy
Channing Tatum’s “Gambit” deal is in jeopardy of falling apart and he is planning to exit the comic book project at 20th Century Fox, an individual with knowledge of the situation has told TheWrap.

The studio had been in the process of testing young actresses to star alongside Tatum, including Lea Seydoux, but insiders suggest that director Rupert Wyatt will soon have to find a new leading man.
It is unclear whether Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin plan to remain involved in a producing capacity, or whether Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will move forward on their own.

One individual close to the project told TheWrap that Tatum’s reps are still in active discussions with the studio but acknowledged that “something is up.” The situation will have to be resolved quickly, as “Gambit” is slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

  • 15th June 2015 - Rupert Wyatt to direct Channing Tatum's X-Men film
20th Century Fox’s Gambit, starring Channing Tatum as the titular Cajun mutant, has finally found its director: EW can exclusively reveal that Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will helm the mutant movie.

While the character of Gambit, a.k.a. Remy LeBeau, appeared in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and was played by Taylor Kitsch (True Detective), this will be the comic-book fan-favorite’s first solo outing. Gambit, who eventually becomes part of the X-Men team in the comics, has the ability to charge objects with energy (his favorite being playing cards), rendering them explosive.

Tatum is producing the film along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg, and it’s scheduled for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

  • 31st October 2014 - Channing Tatum’s ‘X-Men’ Character ‘Gambit’ Spinoff Moving Forward
In a move that makes official that the X-Men character Gambit is getting his own spinoff movie with Channing Tatum as the card-savvy protagonist, Fox has set Robocop scribe Josh Zetumer to write the screenplay. The studio has officially attached Tatum as star, and to produce with his Free Association partner Reid Carolin, The Donners Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner, and Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg.

The screenplay will be based on a treatment penned by legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who with Jim Lee created the character for Marvel in 1990. The storyline is being kept under wraps. The character, which also goes by the name Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, causing the object in question to explosively release its charge on impact. The character materialized in a short burst in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
