  • Early Ratings Analysis by Marc Berman (TVMediaInsights)
The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

    Metered Market Monday Ratings
Respectable David Letterman Special on CBS

    Monday 5/04/15

    Household
    Rating/Share
    ABC 7.8/12
    NBC 5.6/ 9
    CBS 5.2/ 8
    Fox 3.0/ 5
    CW 0.9/ 1

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Oscar Evening – Monday 5/05/14
    CBS: +41, CW: +12, ABC: – 1, NBC: -15, Fox: -48

    ———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

    -Winners:
“Dancing With the Stars” (ABC), “The Voice” (NBC)

    -Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Originals” (CW), “The Following” (Fox), “Jane the Virgin” (CW), “The Night Shift” (NBC)

    ———-

    Ratings Breakdown:
ABC opened the week on a typically dominant overnight note, but “The Voice” should be more than enough for NBC to win the evening in adults 18-49 (and the other key demos). “Dancing with the Stars” scored a healthy 8.8 rating/14 share in households from 8-10 p.m., leading into on-the-fence “Castle” at a second-place 5.9/10 at 10 p.m. Chances are “Castle” will return, but moving to another night is likely.

“The Voice,” meanwhile, was on the map with a 6.7/11 from 8-10 p.m., but sophomore “The Night Shift” dipped to a distant third-place 3.5/ 6 at 10 p.m. and will have to be replaced next season. What was a moderate summer performer in 2014 was not the right choice to air out of “The Voice.”

Over at CBS, 90 minute special “David Letterman: A Life on Television” averaged a respectable 5.7/ 9 from 9:30 p.m.-11 p.m., which led out of a 4.7/ 7 for a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Keep in mind that regularly scheduled Monday 9-10 p.m. time period occupant “Scorpion” has ended for the season.

Earlier in the evening on CBS were sitcoms “2 Broke Girls” (#3: 4.6/ 8 at 8 p.m.) and “Mike & Molly” (#3: 4.6/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.) at typical overnight levels.

Elsewhere, it was household overnight business as usual on Fox and The CW. Fox aired dramas “Gotham” (#4: 3.6/ 6), which lost steam as the first season progressed, and “The Following” (#4: 2.4/ 4), which is unlikely to be granted a fourth season. And typically lackluster results for already renewed “The Originals” (#5: 1.0/ 2) and “Jane the Virgin” (#5: 0.8/ 1) on The CW means the network is likely to revamp Monday next season.

  1. Is Marc OK? he didn't overly praise JTV. The world is ending!

    He wants Cordon.

I'm outnumbered compared to people who want Jane out of Mondays.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Shows ABC promoted last night:

NEW: 500 Questions, Mistresses, Astronaut Wives Club, The Bachelorette,
    The Whispers, Extreme Weight Loss,

REGULAR: Wednesday Comedies, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Shark
Tank/BTT, OUAT, Nashville, Castle (2 promos),

(Forever, AOS, American Crime and Revenge were NOT)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I feel like i'm missing something with this Cordon, like why is everyone so eager for it?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I kind of get why ABC avoids promoting AOS in most of the lineups since the crossed audience would be minimal (as seen in the horrible DWTS-Shield pairing on Tuesday) but they need to promote it somewhere, it is annoying that it is always left out. Did they promote it during the Sunday lineup at least? Like during OUAT?

And thanks for this by the way, I love to read about it ;)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes it got 1 during OUAT and S&L not Revenge though

    ReplyDelete
  8. With these bumbers TO can do from 0,4-0,6. 0,5 is most likely.
If JtV does a 0,3, we should start a twitter campaign #UnrenewJane and tag Marc in every post.

  9. Honestly, if I was a fan of the show, I would want it on Fridays asap, even more than I want from a ratings analysis point of view. The Voice murders this show as seen in the huge spike in the winter and low numbers in the fall/ spring. That is no coincidence I think. In addition, I also don't think this will ever be a big ratings performer and will live mostly of a niche/ critical audience, so it is better to move it to a place where the expectations are lower - it is what CBS did with The Good Wife after all.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Meh, could be better, but still. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  11. Lol, he would go crazy with the attack on his virgin!

    ReplyDelete
  12. yeah but they have been promoting The Whispers a lot..

    ReplyDelete
  13. That is good! ;) I am looking forward to the show and they need to like it at least a little bit if they moved Mistresses aside for it. Even if I think the pairing with the bachelorette is comically bad, at least from what I imagine the show to be!

    ReplyDelete
  14. So Contagious5 May 2015 at 14:25

Um, please no. Marc is annoying, but I'd kinda like to not start a campaign against a show I like, if possible.

    ReplyDelete
  15. its there best possible lead in so I kinda get it

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Originals got a ( so far ) 1.0 so far right ?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah in pure volume yes, but I sincerely have doubts about compatibility. It's like saying Shield's lead-in improved last week with DWTS. I don't think it really did.

    ReplyDelete
  18. NBC put Trace Atkins and Michelle Obama in their major publicized "Sweeps" The Night Shift episode and it still pulled in low ratings (and a distant third place). NBC completely wasted The Voice lead in.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Castle seems up in viewers likely due to no NCIS LA.

    ReplyDelete
  20. true maybe the should given it wed after comedies repeat (I believe they do well in the summer)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, I thin that would have been a better option. My fantasy schedule was Beyond the Tank on Tuesday or Thursday as its lead-in (only 3 episodes are airing in season, so they will have 7 originals to air somewhere). But Wednesdays would have been my second option. But maybe the show is more female skewing than I imagine it being and this ends up working out, though i doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very likely. I'd imagine Castle and NCIS: LA share an audience.

Although, the Letterman special did OK for CBS, so it was a good call.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We have yet to see how Letterman did though. But yeah I would agree that this was a better option than repeats which is what it is replacing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Goodbye Revenge 😢 2011-20155 May 2015 at 14:35

How the hell would they not promote revenge?! This week is the series finale?! On the other hand, it was able to jump .2 without any promotion

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Bachlorette into The Whispers is one of the strangest pairings this summer. ABC did it because it's likely their largest platform, but It thought they would have paired it with a summer show like Battle Bots.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Goodbye Revenge 😢 2011-20155 May 2015 at 14:38

The promo has more views than OUAT's promo on youtube and the highest up votes (630 SO FAR) it Has ever had

    ReplyDelete
  27. Will the Originals be able to hit higher than 0.5 again? I think it's a weak lead-in now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I guess cuz there's already buzz online they don't feel the need. They could likely promote it during TGIT.

    ReplyDelete
  29. On a side not: FOX has begun their Empire S2 promos

    ReplyDelete
  30. Already? Lol. That probably guarantees it is fall then.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree, it is bizarre. Though I don't think anything will ever beat DWTS | Happy Endings | Apartment 23 | Private Practice. That was out of this world. You actually had to make an effort to come up with such a horrible schedule lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yup ( it's tell people how to catch up on eps before it returns)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Most of time it gets proms on Friday but they might start on Thursday this week

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm personally expecting a lineup of Empire/Studio (or Studios since I've seen both in print) City. Both of those would make a cohesive night for FOX.

I'm also anticipating Scream Queens on Thursday. What they put after it is interesting since FOX keeps highlighting it's comedic in approach. Maybe they try something like Rosewood after it, but I'm not sold on that being a good match for Screen Queens at all.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Agreed, it was a terrible schedule and a classic case of a network just throwing three left over shows together and calling it a night. No flow to the night at all.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Heavily female skewing 'Scream Queens' against TGIT? FOX would be stupid to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think Scream Queens is Tuesday at 9. Agree on Wednesdays.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Goodbye Revenge 😢 2011-20155 May 2015 at 15:25

    That is very true

    ReplyDelete
  39. Goodbye Revenge 😢 2011-20155 May 2015 at 15:25

    That could be

    ReplyDelete
  40. it shouldn't be a lead in on a monday night in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  41. Are you suggesting to put it on Thursday alongside TVD? I'm not really sure both Cordon/CDS will be strong enough to become lead-ins.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I really didn't expect a bump for TNS, mainly because Nashville didn't get a bump from their Michelle Obama appearance last year.

    ReplyDelete
  43. True. I didn't either, but I think that NBC did. They went all out on the Today show to try to promote it this week.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dempsey dying of GA is not going to pull female viewers away.

    ReplyDelete
  45. We'll have to see. My guess is as we get further away form the death, Grey's female ratings will diminish rapidly.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Not sure where to place it and what to use as a lead in for next season tbh

    Mon - SPN
    Tue - Flash
    Wed - Arrow
    Thurs - TVD
    Fri - 100

    is what I'd do

    ReplyDelete
  47. Because why promote a low rated show that is having it's series finale this week?

    ReplyDelete
  48. tbh I think TO is toast. its expansive and has neither a critical nor medial acclaim. bet its fridays for them with a short final season

    ReplyDelete
  49. Over their top female audience draw dying. It's not the gender, it's the character.

    ReplyDelete
  50. doubtfull, it's a pretty conventional budgeted show, especially thanks to the synergy with the TVD set/crew in Conyers.

Unlike Reign/BatB it's also in middleground ratings wise. Doubtfull that 3 is its last

    ReplyDelete
  51. Short final season? That is not gonna happen, syndication issues...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Winners: Gotham, Dancing with the Stars

    Honorable Mention: The Voice

Losers: 2 Broke Girls, Mike and Molly, The Following, The Night Shift

What the hell happened with the CBS comedies? Was Scorpion really helping them out that much with pre tune or what? It's two weeks in a row now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Voice seems to be showing it's age

    ReplyDelete
  54. ouch! where are you getting these numbers?

    ReplyDelete
  55. correct if I am wrong but don't they have a whole different set that has nothing to do with TVD?
also Reign/BatB are toast too. they will be placed in the summer where no one really cares

    ReplyDelete
  56. I do believe Scirpion had same impact as Empire on AI and HTGAWM on Scandal. It can't be a coincidence.

    ReplyDelete
  57. it debuted in 2011, no? it's not like it's DWTS, Survivor or AI

    ReplyDelete
  58. But those shows had very obvious crossed-audiences; here it is strange. But yeah it seems too much of a coincidence.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The Originals 0.5
    Jane The Virgin 0.5

    ReplyDelete
  60. AI never was asked to run twice a year though.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ouch at NBC overall.

    ReplyDelete
  62. glad it rose

    ReplyDelete
  63. One year ago...
    The Voice 3.0
    The Blacklist 2.7

    ReplyDelete
  64. Gotham 1.7
    The Following 1.1

    ReplyDelete
  65. that not true all. TVD is almost in its 7th season and has no syndication deal. it won't happen to TO before TVD. also TO is no where on the same hype as TVD was back then

    ReplyDelete
  66. set, yes. Crew, no. TO/TVD is sharing a bunch of directors, writers and crew members. Thus actually saving quite some money. I would call it a nasty little trick to get something done for cheap but it appears it works.

Luckily they will, however BatB was already renewed for a fourth season wich is killing your "3 is the last" theory for TO

    ReplyDelete
  67. DWTS even year to year and tied The Voice in 18-34. The Voice keeps in falling. The results show tonight might dip below a 2.

    ReplyDelete
  68. 2 Broke Girls 1.6
    Mike & Molly 1.5
    TBBT (R) 1.5

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't think SPN will be moving to 8. I'd swap Darkside and SPN. I'll kick Reign to Summer and put iZombie there. I think the 100 skews males so it's incompatible with JTV. Friday could work with JTV- ANTM. I'm okay with Arrow-TO/T100.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Mike and Molly would do better airing in between reruns.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Dancing With The Stars tied The Voice in A18-34

    ReplyDelete
  72. you'd think they'd promote their next day originals AOS and Forever, but no.

    ReplyDelete
  73. And Gotham is just 0.1 away preliminary, despite only airing in the lower viewed hour.

    ReplyDelete
  74. the Voice continues to drop at an alarming rate, year to year. Blacklist is not doing so hot on Thursdays either

    ReplyDelete
  75. Goodbye Revenge 😢 2011-20155 May 2015 at 16:07

    Ouch CBS

    ReplyDelete
  76. Nice to see Gotham as the no.1 scripted show!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Whoa, what happened to the CBS comedies?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Forever is a dead show walking at this point, so I understand why they wouldn't promote it.

    ReplyDelete
  79. was the CW pre-empted? Or has Jane been higher than the originals in 18-34 before?

    ReplyDelete
  80. and that's NBC's fault. their loss

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yeah it's not even a results episode. I fear the episode tomorrow would be a lot lower.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Just because TVD didn't get one it doesn't mean that CW will not try to get one with TO. The 100, BATB, Reign and JTV deserve to die before TO because ratings...

    ReplyDelete
  83. It is very strange. They seem to have collapsed as soon as Scorpion left the schedule. Could the show have had a lifting effect on all CBS Monday boats that we weren't aware off?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Last night's episode of 2BG was the best of the season so far. It's sad that the show it's so low.

    ReplyDelete
  85. They didn't even an option. They still don't have. They depend too much on the voice to be in a state that they could protect it more.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I heard they will be preempted again tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  87. And The Voice is suppose to be the hip fresh show.

    ReplyDelete
  88. do you know what syndication is? lol also you might not believe it but JtV is performing better in the key demo (which is W18-34) than TO

    ReplyDelete
  89. Those 2 are CBS shows though. WB shows are starting to get crowded in CW.

    ReplyDelete
  90. are you sure? because I remember Carina saying on twitter that apart from Julie they have a whole different team.
TO/TVD need some crosdovers though to get their remaining audience to watch. like for real.. otherwise both are toast

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh no! During Arrow? Grrrrrr

    ReplyDelete
  92. When I wrote NBC is reliant on The Voice and Dick Wolf shows, they have to be careful that in a few months time they aren't in a state where I write NBC is reliant on just Dick Wolf shows.

I expect The Voice to rebound a lot next fall, but it just highlights that need for NBC to put something after The Voice that is watched.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Of I course I know what is syndication. And it makes sense JTV performing better in W18-34, since it is more girl tv show than TO. TO is almost 50% w and 50% m...

    ReplyDelete
  94. No I meant The Flash episode but the Arrow Finale episode will also be preempted.

    ReplyDelete
  95. not true...TO has really bad numbers with males! Their core audience is female

    ReplyDelete
  96. SPN will never be an 8pm show

    ReplyDelete

  98. Lead-in matters, but lead-out? I suppose it's possible but it would be very weird that Scorpion has an effect on the comedies. Maybe people thought that Scorpion's finale also meant that 2BG and M&M had ended? I find that very hard to believe though.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Aren't there rumors that TVD will loose it's anchor spot on Thursday night due to low ratings and will be moved to another night other then Tuesday and Wednesday ?

    ReplyDelete
  100. The Originals was great last night it deserves better ratings for sure. In my opinion it should of stayed on Tuesdays it was doing fine there last year. And Jane should not be on Mondays it doesn't belong after TO. Maybe Friday but not Monday. I'm just glad TO got its 3rd season already, and its a full season too so that will give it like 66 episodes by end of season 3. I'd guess it would get its 4th season and be done, unless ratings increase a ton and all the other CW shows fail, which is very possible.

Sad to see The Following so low, here's hoping they have a good finale so we don't get left hanging, that would suck. Hopefully they bring the story full circle, now that Joes dead Ryan has noone to chase. It was a slow episode last night too so I'm not surprised the ratings are so low. Next week does look good though. Not sure what I'm going to do next week with the 2hr Following finale and TO finale both starting at 8. Ughh decisions decisions lol

    ReplyDelete
  101. I read in some comment that it is 57% w. It doesn't matter, JTV was saved because critical acclaim, not because ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Bad night for CBS, at least for their fresh comedies. Good for Gotham, being the season finale I thought it would go up a bit. Following not so good. Castle wasn't competing with NCIS LA last night, but it still did ok. DWTS and The Voice no surprises there

    ReplyDelete
  103. luckily for Forever it had its final episode wrap everything up nicely. So no desires will be left open (well...unlike the mystery of what immortality really is but who knows that anyway?)

    ReplyDelete
  104. Matthew Zamora5 May 2015 at 16:30

Meh all around... The Originals had one of its best episodes ever last night and deserved better ratings

    ReplyDelete
  105. you need to read it in articles. lol and its not only that JtV is cheap to make, has a lot of crotical acclaim and is a hit with W18-34

Ouch at 2 BGs,but at least it's steady.Glad Janes up & TO is steady at 0.5

  107. Me too, I dunno.

I do however think lead-out can matter. Scandal suffered when Murder left the airwaves. Idol suffered a lot when Empire left the airwaves (and the Wednesday episodes were systematically rating higher than the Thursday ones when Empire was still on, despite Thursday being two hours). There are more examples but these two are quite poignant and recent. But I think that is usually with shows with an obvious compatibility. A pair of veteran old skewing comedies benefiting from an action procedural is odd.

  108. just had a look at the ratings, fell to a 0.4 once this season. Unlikely they'll can it after 3. I'm guessing 4

  109. Yikes at the 2BG/Mike and Molly, whats happening?
Also ouch at The Voice still great but 7 tenths down vs last year.
CW and Castle did decent,DWTS did great, TNS low but stable.

  110. Should we get used to these ratings? Seems like shows can't even go above 2.0 these days.

  111. Question among my ignorance in this Ratings World: Is the number of viewers important? I ask because TO lost 200k in the second half hour and the other shows won. Thanks.

  112. No, total views is not very important. The 18-49 demographic number is more important.

See this Ratings FAQ, it really helps explain the ratings

  113. Only a few can, some reality shows and a few scripted ones.
Empire is the one exception, which can hit 6s (even a 7.0 in the last half hour of its finale)

  114. Thank you very much for you help.

  115. How low can 'The Voice' & 'Dancing With The Stars' go before they get cancelled or ended?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Gotham was the highest rated scripted show of the night.

  117. So DWTS is beating the Voice in the under 35 women demo. Wow.

  118. Flash finale also.

  119. So CW wasn't preempted today? TVBN doesn't have those red text preemption advisory. Marc might be freaking out right now.

  120. I never see Revenge promoted during the week lol

  121. a 0.5 for JtV isn't really why he would go insane, try a 0.6, then he'd loose his brains

    ReplyDelete
  122. Secrets & Lies adjusted up to a 1.8 and Family guy adjusted up to a 1.7. No adjustment to Once Upon a Time

    ReplyDelete
  123. What if TVD, Originals and JTV all tie this week!

    ReplyDelete
  124. then TVDs writers really should reconsider their focus if two monday shows tie their night

  126. Sad for TO, but actually it's not that bad IMO. It's up against DWTS and The Voice. I doubt the CW could do much better.

    ReplyDelete
  127. So I will ignore everything you said, because i need to read these information in articles too.

  128. Believe me you're not missing anything. One of the most unfunny men in the UK.

  129. doesen't refer to James Cordon but a new drama series theCW premieres next fall. It's based on some european quarantine zone drama

  130. I have a source for these numbers though. if you want I can give you the links. For example I know that Jtv got a 0.3 with M18-34 and TO only a 0.2 this werk and TOs male numbers have always been so low
