After last episode revealed a lot of things, I expected this episode to follow suite. Whilst it did shed some light on some events, I find myself every episode continuing to question who created this virus/fungus, and why it was created.
"Call it what you want, it's genocide" Julia
Julia, who we see in past, is gathered around a table full of immortals. The reason I say the past is: unless Balleseros is an immortal now it can't possibly be her present, as he would have aged. Ilaria wants to eliminate 75% of the current population by using coordinated strikes, which by the sound of it is a virus there releasing. They have the cure, and will give it to those who are deemed essential. So in other words they are planning to reshape the world to what they want it to be. It also looks to me as if Ilaria are behind the on-goings at the Abbey, and started this whole thing.
Having said all that above, why would the immortals target just the island instead of the whole world like they planned to, what changed? Or are there two separate things happening, maybe they are using the island as a testing ground to see if it works, and then if it does they might release it into the world?
Also when Julia met with Durant, she said there is one other immortal who feels the way she does about killing all these humans, could that be Michael. She says that person is working on something promising, which could be that fungus. So many possibilities, I don't know which one I should stick with.
"I don't want him to be the father of my child" Amy
This episode revealed a lot about Michael's family, and how twisted it was. We find out that Agnes was indeed Anne's mother, and Amy's grandmother. What was disturbing though was that Michael is the father of all of them as he has sexual intercourse with his daughters when they come of age, and they each gave him another daughter, he has been doing it for years. To keep the line of succession going. I was glad to finally learn how he has so many daughters, as twisted as it is, I can't say I'm surprised by it.
Amy this episode played a big role, she doesn't want to bare Michael's child so attempts to make him lose control of his cult by creating an outbreak. She also sets Soren's mother free who creates serious problems for the CDC team. Like I said previously Amy is the smartest among them, and that was clearly shown this episode after she and Landry framed Anne. I can see a confrontation coming between Amy and Michael soon, and I wouldn't be surprised if she found a way to kill him. Another possibility is that she might succeed with her plot to make Michael lose control, which could be in her own push for power. She might even become head of the Abbey one day.
Elsewhere, Peter continues to irritate me. Despite him being imprisoned and tormented by Michael all episode he still reveals information about Sarah's pregnancy. Because he revealed that to Michael, I'm going to guess that Michael will somehow find a way to remove her baby, as he seemed delighted when he learned of an immortal child. Michael also knows Peter is working for Ilaria, the strange thing is how? Does he have a way of communicating to the outside? He has to be getting his information from somewhere. It also appeared to me as if Michael knows that Ilaria want him dead or maybe alive. He said "Did Ilaria send you" as if he knew they would come one day. Even though he is an immortal he doesn't seem connected to Ilaria anymore, if anything he seems to have been cast out by them, as who would freely go to a remote island. He couldn't have just gone there for the fresh air... I used to think the island could be an origin story for the immortals, but it can't be, can it?
Other notes:
- That necklace Madam Durant had is the same symbol on the Abbey's walls. What does it mean?
- How long has Balleseros been working for Ilaria?
- In the present the outbreak has spread, why didn't they use the cure to save some people? Why didn't Julia give herself it?
- If there is no way of communicating to the outside, where is Michael getting his information from?
- What good will getting Alan to choke Sarah do if she can't die, since she is an immortal.
- What will Michael to with Anne? Will he kill another one of his daughters?
- Why won’t Anne question Michael?
- Are there two different sets of Immortals one good/one bad as Michael said "Are you one of them" as if he wasn't an immortal, which we know he is.
Summary
My head is spinning... I don't know what to make of this episode. Sure it was another great one, but the things that were revealed, specifically related to Julia and the immortals made me question everything I have theorized these past weeks. Everything seems to be connected someway, but with so many possibilities running through my mind as to what is the truth; I am getting a little tired without knowing fully what's going on. I need more answers...
As always, thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!
