Fox 7.3/11
CBS 5.8/ 9
NBC 4.8/ 8
ABC 4.2/ 7

(Note: “American Idol” did not air on Fox on the year-ago evening)

———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “The Middle” (ABC), “The Goldbergs” (ABC), “Empire” (Fox), “Modern Family” (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Mentalist” (CBS), “Law & Order: SVU” (NBC), “Chicago PD” (NBC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing…there was something for every show last night.

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led this first Wednesday of 2015 with ease, besting No. 2 CBS by 1.5 overnight rating points. But “American Idol” continues to lose steam. On paper, a dominant 7.8 rating/12 share for the 14th season premiere of “American Idol” from 8-9 p.m. has to be considered a so-called winner. But this was still a loss of 17 percent from the 9.4/15 for the two-hour year-ago season-opener (on 1/15/14). So, more expected erosion is likely to continue this season for “American Idol.”

Particularly promising on Fox, however, was the debut of heavily promoted drama “Empire” at a first-place 6.9/10 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was a hefty 138 percent above the 2.9/ 5 for the debut of former time period occupant “Red Band Society” on 9/17/14. Overnight retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “American Idol” (7.9/12) was solid at 87 percent. And the loss of audience in the second half-hour (7.0/11 to 6.7/10) was only four percent. So, “Empire” was very successfully sampled on Fox.

On CBS, the annual “People’s Choice Awards” scored a 5.9/ 9 from 9-11 p.m., which was 19 percent below the 7.3/12 on the comparable year-ago evening. And that 7.3 in the household overnights translated into 9.72 million viewers and a 2.7 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data.

Earlier in the evening on CBS was relocated “The Mentalist” at a second-place 5.9/9 from 9-10 p.m., which resulted in a series low for competing (and similar appeal) “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC (#4: 4.3/ 7).

“The Mysteries of Laura” led into a 5.2/ 8 for veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 p.m. (#3t), which was 11 percent above its most recent telecast on Dec. 12 (4.7/ 7). And sophomore “Chicago PD” capped off the night for NBC with a second-place 5.0/ 9 at 10 p.m., which held 96 percent of its SVU lead-in (matching a season high in that benchmark).

On ABC, sitcoms “The Middle” (#3: 5.6/ 9) and sophomore “The Goldbergs” (#3: 5.0/ 8) were not negatively impacted opposite the return of “American Idol.” But a fourth-place 4.1/ 6 for “Black-ish” at 9:30 p.m. dipped by 35 percent from the 6.3/10 for “Modern Family” at 9 p.m. Both were below average opposite the debut of aforementioned “Empire” on Fox, and they led into a repeat of the pilot episode of “Galavant” at a 1.9/ 3 (#3) at 10 p.m.

The CW populated the evening with encore telecasts of “Arrow” and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” which each scored a 0.8/ 1.

  1. I am so happy Empire did well

  2. Looks like Empire did well but made a dent on MF

It seems solid for Empire unless it is old skewing, which I doubt.

Black-ish suffered, same targed audience at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Middle and Goldbergs seem tied around a 2.0. Blackish may be joining them by the looks of it, didn't seem to do good considering the leadin

    ReplyDelete
  5. Empire seems to have done really well. We need demos first of course but this looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Man I hope Empire does well in the sweet spot.

  7. GO EMPIRE!

Taraji Henson was on FIRE last night in the pilot!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Actually, does Blackish HH usually skew like that? If it doesn't, that looks pretty bad for it. Sub-2, anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  9. ABC seems to have taken a hit.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Surprisingly low for Blackish. ABC will still probably drag it to syndication because they own it but probably not a vote of confidence.

  11. I'm so glad Middle/Goldbergs didn't get affected by Idol, good for them. Seems like Modern Family got hit hard cause of Empire and Blackish also cause it and Empire have the same target audience. Empire looks like it did really well, I'm hoping for a 2.5+. Of TMOL got hit hard by Mentalist and looks like CPD did good after SVU.

  12. Middle-Goldbergs: 1.9
    Modern: 2.8
    Blackish: 1,8

Or is that too low? I'm still unsure of the usual correlations between these numbers and A18-49

  13. It depends on what fails8 January 2015 at 14:39

It's the #1 comedy of the season and its Modern Family retention is the best in years.

The show by itself is a The Middle/Goldbergs sized player.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It's not surprising. EMPIRE targeted the same audience as Black-ish

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think TM and TG might have done enough to break into a 2. But Modern Family should be in a 2.8, yes.

  16. Revenge and OUAT8 January 2015 at 14:40

Good for Empire. The peoples choice awards were boring as hell IMO. first of all always the same people win (Grey's Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo). nice that revenge at least nominated but why did they pick that scene to show?! I was thrilled that viola won and also the flash deserved to win although I would have preferred HTGAWM

    ReplyDelete
  17. There's no way it's not getting to syndication based on its recent track record. I'm still bitter bout TW though, that would've made it

    ReplyDelete
  18. American Idol seems down but not out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Middle/Goldbergs probably took a little bit of a hit because of Idol while Modern Family and Blackish took a bigger hit because of Empire and Peoples Choice Awards.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't know if MF was impacted by PCA.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Exactly. I honestly never thought of that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @omabin knows this stuff better but that's my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Revenge and OUAT8 January 2015 at 14:43

    The PCAs were crap

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, we know. Your precious Revenge didn't get a single award and everyone is against it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. No im serious lol. It came to me when Blackish returned low.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I enjoyed Empire more than I thought I would so I'm glad it did well

    ReplyDelete
  27. So what could've possibly affected it then? Criminal Minds doesn't affect Modern Family. Goldbergs did well enough yesterday to not effect it. So either PCA's and Empire affected it or it just had a really bad episode. I don't know because I didn't watch it yet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I knew Empire would surprise. Lets see if it sticks

    ReplyDelete
  29. Revenge and OUAT8 January 2015 at 14:45

No i knew they were not going to win. I did not like the whole show for some reason. Last year i enjoyed them where revenge was not even nominated, note that

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't worry. The PCA's don't matter anyway. Their just awards to make shows feel good. Only Golden Globes and Emmys matter. Lucky for you the Golden Globes are on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Modern Family seems to be strange, ratings-wise this season. It did a 2.8 for no reason a couple of originals ago. And then that weird jump to a 3.7 that reverted back to a 2.8.
Might have been just one of those days.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So far, this is only one bad household data point. No reason to believe it will have to be dragged to syndication. Everything it's done so far has indicated it would get there on its own merits.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It probably won't stick, but a 3.0+ premier is still a huge win for Fox especially this season.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Revenge and OUAT8 January 2015 at 14:46

Yeah i know but last year was way better! What is up wirh only showing 50% of the award catagories

    ReplyDelete
  35. You don't know if it will premiere above a 3.0.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Was there any intro sequence? Like last year the diner scene with 2 Broke Girls? That was hilarious, and Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs were amazing hosts?

    ReplyDelete
  37. You have a lot of confidence in me but I actually don't bother with the HH, I have no data about their correlation with the demos. I've tried it once but the correlation was too lousy so I stopped. They have been banished from my spreadsheet!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well I think it was definitely affected by Empire and PCA's IMO. It'll definitely go up next week. I don't think it'll be "one of those days" until March or April.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Of course, I do. You're my go-to guru for ratings. besides, you are from the same place I am. We gotta help each other. LOl

    ReplyDelete
  40. Lets see what happens next week as Empire settles
