-Winners:

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Taste” (ABC), The iHeartradio Jingle Ball 2014” (CW)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy overnight Thursday household victory for CBS, which featured an encore telecast of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the night: 6.7 rating/11 share at 8 p.m.) into original installments of “Mom” (6.2/10), soon-to-conclude “Two and a Half Men” (5.5/ 9), “The McCarthys” (4.4/ 7) and “Elementary” (4.9/ 9) from 8:30-11 p.m. All five shows on CBS led their time periods, and the overnight retention of 93 percent for “Mom” out of the “Big Bang Theory” repeat, in particular, is very promising.

In the specials department, “The People Magazine Awards” on NBC scored a modest 2.9/ 5 from 9-11 p.m., which was still a slight improvement over NBC’s regularly scheduled Thursday night programming rotation and up by seven percent from lead-in “The Biggest Loser” (#2: 2.6/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.). And holiday-themed “The iHeartradio Jingle Ball 2014” on The CW averaged a weak 1.3/ 2 from 8-9:30 p.m. into a repeat of “Whose Line is it Anyway” at 9:30 p.m. (#5: 0.8/ 1).

On ABC, two more hours of time period filler “The Taste” did not impress at a 2.4/ 4 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. And it led into a repeat of “How To Get Away With Murder” at a third-place 1.8/ 3 at 10 p.m. Fox closed the night with back-to-back repeats of “Bones” at an average 2.4/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. 1. I wonder what ABC should do to replace the taste. They clearly have the right plan with the split seasons for TGIT but they need better filler than the taste, though I really don't know what it should be.

  2. how is it underrated when everyone keeps talking about it?

Perhaps a relocated Bachorette? I think its more imortant to hold down TGIT than Mondays in the summer. Or something like Motive/Rookie Blue/Candian drama. It would be cheap and do better than the Taste with January viewing.

  4. It depends on what fails19 December 2014 at 15:33

They could go Bachelorette/Rookie Blue, but they would need a bigger break than just 8 weeks.

Could be three canadian shows airing half of the season there and returning after the NBA Finals, a long break, but they would be all procedurals, they just need a third pickup.

  5. The Bachelorette isn't a bad idea, especially because I don't see it being a problem returning for a summer edition later on. It would probably depreciate a bit faster than usual but I think it would be worth it. So I like that idea in theory. The only problem is that it would be on at the same time as the bachelor and that I don't think is a good idea at all, it would be too much of the same thing. I mean in January we would be looking at 4 hours per week (plus the usual specials) of bachelor/bachelorette.

I do think reality is the answer, they just need a proper show. I think ABC should just throw a lot of reality experiments on next summer. They barely have anything at all during summer anyway, so there is not a big opportunity cost. Last year, I feel like they did that on a small scale with Rising Star and The Quest. Sure, none of them actually worked but I think they should continue doing so, even more strongly this year. The downside is very low and the upside is big if they can find a utility player to throw at this winter hours.

The Canadian imports option isn't a bad one but I imagine improvements from the taste would be marginal and more importantly, I don't think they can do air them with that much advance from the Canada airings anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  6. ABC won't air The Bachelor and Bachelorette at the same time... That would be way too much.

  7. It depends on what fails19 December 2014 at 16:10

Will Mom be the next (and only) big thing for CBS or do those numbers look inflated? Even by such small markets like Nashville and Jacksonville.

    ReplyDelete
  8. They cannot have a bigger break than just 8 weeks I think. There are 34 Thursdays in the regular season. Out of these:
    - 3 are not usable for proper programming (which the bachelorette would qualify for) since one is Thanksgiving and the other two are Christmas.break.
    - TGIT takes at least 23 of these (23 Grey's at 8pm, 22 Scandal + 1 Grey's at 9pm and 15 HTGWM + 8 Something Else at 10pm).

    So 34 - 3 - 23 = 8 weeks.

  9. Good for CBS

    ReplyDelete
  10. OUCH The Biggest Loser.

    ReplyDelete
  11. - Mom looks great, is CBS inflated once again? I sure hope not, I am happy that it seems to finally be catching on!
    - The biggest looser did awful. The show premiered just at 3.0 two years ago, that's crazy.

    - Bones is looking like a bigger asset in repeats than in originals for FOX. It's kind of a waste to put it on an hiatus with so many hours needing a permanent show like it there.
    - At least the taste stopped falling but ABC still needs a better plan.
    - Are those CW numbers for real? If so this special did really well for them. Strange that Whose Line repeat did so low there.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mom is inflated, but 1.8+ in the finals is still good

    ReplyDelete
  13. half hours for I Heart are 0.5/0.7/0.7

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think it will get adjusted down a few tenths, but that still pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good for Mom, but CBS had zero competition all night

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Biggest Loser will probably recover next season if given a better timeslot.

Funny thing is, with TBL a sinking it's probably helping Celebrity Apprentice's renewal chances.

I'm sure Donald Trump is happy with that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It depends on what fails19 December 2014 at 16:22

Is The Biggest Loser gone for real?

Seriously, it looks to week for summer (AGT, Ninja Warrior and even HGN do better than this) and it wouldn't be an improvement over any filler used to replaced The Voice in the winter (unless The Apprentice crashs and burns).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Time to resurrect Fear Factor!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the Apprentice will outrate TBL, which could mean another season of Apprentice (Donald Trump's dream).

As far as Biggest Loser I think it may recover next cycle if given a better timeslot. But at this point NBC should consider relocating a summer reality show to the main season.

If not that maybe Ther should consider bringing back a former reality hit. Maybe bring back Deal or No Deal since next year is the 10 year anniversary of its original premier.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I simply think the show is not proper utilized in this capacity. Two years ago it averaged a very respectable 2.32 when replacing the voice in the Winter and that was against the also resurgent season of the bachelor (strong unscripted competition). Sure it has depreciated since then but I still feel like it is worth trying it in that role again since it did so well.

Give it two hours, a post new year's launch and some promo as voice fill-in and see what happens. If it doesn't perform, then I agree it should be let go but right now I still think it's worth trying it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've been saying the same for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would love that, but Greenblatt was the one that killed it because of an undesirable demographic. I doubt he'll go back and resurrect it again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The biggest reason it worked was because of the "New Years resolution" advertising angle. It was pretty ingenious.

I think that could work again

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fear Factor's cancellation was absolutely ridiculous. Even though the show was gross as hell, it did decent.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I see. Perhaps the chance will be high if Celebrity Apprentice crashes next year. :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. I heard that it's because of the goat sperm thingy?

  28. donkey semen. ew.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Haha. I confirmed it by research. But it's banned here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lol did IHeart Jingle Ball really tie the People awards in the demo from 9-9:30 PM?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes I agree. They should try it again. I think it would be pretty weird if such a big portion of the audience simply decided it didn't want to watch it anymore, considering it was always a utility player and not a show in a big peak or something. The trends don't add up for me very well, and considering it had a big situational change, I would more easily believe there are other reasons for the decline worth exploring.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I hope it can still keep itself above the big bang repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It depends on what fails19 December 2014 at 16:39

What uundesirable demographic? It didn't seem old skewing to me.

If it is for other reasons, that's kind of ironic coming from a network that air SVU, a show extremely toxic to advertisers.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah the show attracted poor people and the donkey stunt likely sealed the shows fate.

At this point Fear Factor won't come back until Greenblatt is gone.

That's why I think maybe it's time for NBC to bring back Deal or No Deal. That show has had a great afterlife in casinos, arcades, and phone/computer apps.

It might do well if brought back.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lol, it's more likely NBC brings Ninja Warrior to the main season than being back Fear Factor.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree.

But who knows. Maybe the time for a show like this is over. Extreme makeover weight loss addition hit lows last summer as well.

We'll see though. Hopefully TBL gets a lift for its finale.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It depends on what fails19 December 2014 at 16:51

I agree. If they brought back Last Comic Standing to a network with no comedies, why not Deal or no Deal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. After 8 seasons and 8 winners none of the comics that won "development deals with NBC" have produced a hit comedy.

But I still enjoy the show either way lol.

It did well last summer, so that was actually a good move from Greenblatt.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So acording to marc the iheart jingle ball is a loser and golden globe nominated jane isn't on monday even though it was the highest rated program of the week beating his precious jane

    ReplyDelete
  40. Marc his Virgin, there's nothing we can do about it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Roughly 90% of shows hit lows in their recent seasons due their usual decline, that's not saying much at all, really.

    ReplyDelete
  42. they should put POI in today's slot..it would definitely improve the ratings

    ReplyDelete
  43. Please. Don't feed Donald Trump's ego and toupee.

Every season he says it will be 'yooge' but it always ends up being flat.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Flat is the new up.

I bet if CA averages a 1.3 this January Donald will talk up how he has the second largest reality franchise on NBC behind only the Voice.
