The Vampire Diaries - Welcome to Paradise - Review

19 Oct 2014

This week on The Vampire Diaries, Elena tried out life as a happy, party-going college student, unaware of the memories of loving Damon that were removed by Alaric.  Elena's joie de vivre only seemed to intensify Caroline's angst as she continued to struggle with her complicated feelings for Stefan and her longing for everything that's been taken away from her of late.  Meanwhile, things got even more interesting for Bonnie and Damon as they met the other resident of the mostly-abandoned Mystic Falls '94.  Let's review and discuss!

"You hired a vampire.  Next time, do a background check."  Ah, I loved the scene of Stefan talking a little smack to his obnoxious boss, finally dropping his pretenses of normalcy, along with a whole lotta exposition, before he had his boss take care of Ivy's body (I still think she'll be back, but we'll see).  Even though Stefan intended to return to his new life, he'd already relaxed back into his old self a bit by this point, and got himself further entangled in the affairs back home (or as close to home as he can get) later in the episode.

Stefan's vendetta against Enzo was clearly justified, not least of all because Enzo's also going around dropping diner waitresses like that's no biggie.  Ivy wasn't some exception to Enzo's otherwise drink-compel-abandon routine; he's straight-out remorselessly killing randoms, whenever, like a Season 1 Damon and it needs to stop.  Still, that doesn't mean I'm thrilled about Tripp and Stefan ganging up on Enzo at the end of the episode, since that was flat-out creepy, though a nice throwback to Damon's early alliance with Liz (who was, however, not creepy like Tripp).  Hmm, what's Stefan going to do with this fake new camaraderie with Tripp, who was merely a means to Enzo's intended end?  And how is Enzo getting out of that one?  I still want him to of course, because even with his flaws, Enzo is a wonderfully fun and likable character.
Ignorance is bliss?  Elena is so content in her Damon-memory-less life, and it was nice to see her try to bring the old Mystic Falls gang back together and prevent them from drifting any further apart.  However, as Caroline indicated, it's also really weird and unsettling to see Elena clueless of the feelings that have been a massive part of her life for so long.  And if Liam is any indication of the post-Damon (or as I like to say, until Damon comes back!) love interests for Elena that lie in store, color me unimpressed.  Unless he's hiding some twisty supernatural secrets up his sleeve, Liam seems generic and dull.

Elena was not too busy (briefly) reuniting her pals to give Jeremy a stern talking to, especially since he's still cavorting with Sarah (who frankly seems too interesting for him).  As we learned through an "ohhhh, right, duh" moment in this episode, Sarah must remember everything about Elena biting her and such, since it was revealed that compulsion fades when one crosses into Mystic Falls.  Awkward.

"Some of us prefer to face our problems head on."  Flirting with the idea of moving back in with Elena while experimenting with being friends with Enzo (who has a way of ruining a nice meal out), Caroline faced no end of drama this week, culminating in her confronting Stefan and asking him to stay, and then even admitting to Elena that she'd had (read: has) feelings for Stefan.  Whoa, that's a lot to go through in one episode.

Admittedly, so soon after Enzo had murdered Ivy, it was a badly timed attempt for Car to reconnect with Stefan, seeing as he's still not ready or willing to make that emotional leap.  I do find it interesting that Stefan is now ready to call Ivy his girlfriend after all that commitment phobia he was throwing down back when she was among the living (it almost was on a Winchesters-from-Supernatural level of "I'm just passing through").  Anyway, yes, he only came back to town to kill Enzo...even if he did find time to hug and check in with Elena and have an angst-fest with Caroline.

Caroline encouraged Stefan to remain in the Mystic Falls area if he had felt even the slightest urge to come back and make sure everyone was okay, and if he's at all interested in how much she needs him.  That was brave of her, but Stefan turned and walked off without answering, so ouch.  He can't stay cut off from his feelings for his friends for much longer, especially since the source of this resolve clearly comes from his painful grief over Damon's death, which being home reminds him of.  And if I thought Caroline was brave to confront Stefan (again) like that in the woods, I have to give her even more props for admitting to Elena (when asked) that she had feelings for him.  After all, Bonnie was more hesitant than that about telling Elena she was dating Jeremy, and that was only a precursor to the most boring relationship ever.

Now that Elena is more in touch with her original feelings for Stefan than those she had for Damon, it's nice to see that she didn't show any anger or other negativity towards Caroline at this confession.  Sure, Elena looked a little freaked out in the woods by Caroline's blatant affection for Stefan, but she's more interested in making sure her friends are alright.  Respect, Elena.  And respect to the writers for (hopefully) not trying to use Elena's memory loss to get her back together with Stefan.  We need the show to be fresher and less predictable than that.
"I'm embarrassed for you."  I adore everything about the Damon and Bonnie Trapped in '94 plotline.  The wardrobe, the "Bamon" humor and friendship, the sweet throwback jams, and particularly in this episode, seeing Bonnie embrace hope for once instead of being a resigned martyr as she has so often done in past seasons.  Not to mention the heartfelt, flashback-accompanied glimpse we got into Damon's yearning to be reunited with Elena, but his fear to hope it's possible. We also got to meet Kai, a possible new big bad who has even more cool qualities than just Not Being Markos (which already had him off to a good start).  Chris Wood brings an enjoyably smug, quippy attitude to the inscrutably motived character, who started off by brutally attacking Damon and later claimed he merely did so to force Bonnie to reactivate her powers (which she did).  I find his character, attitude, and actions fascinating as it's hard to get a read on who he truly is or what he could possibly doing in the land of '94.

Also obviously for the win in this part of the episode were the continual one-liners ("I'm sorry I called you the most annoying person in the world.  I hadn't met him yet." -Damon) and Bonnie facing off with Kai and besting him.  Awesomeness.

Elsewhere in the episode: Liv admitted she could easily fall for Tyler but has to use her bitchy veneer to avoid doing so.  I'm again impressed with the writers for making two somewhat useless characters so thoroughly likable in this plotline.  Poor Matt was disillusioned about his civilian protection squad buddies actually being vampire hunters, though why he'd want to hang out with anyone as douchey as Jay in any context is another question.  Sarah seems to have left Jeremy in the dust for now, but what's her next move and who is her long lost father?

What did you think of this episode?  Any ideas about Kai's motives?  Share your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to catch an all-new The Vampire Diaries, Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.

  1. I think maybe only two people can get out and Kai will take Bonnie's spot so he and Damon will get out but Bonnie will get left behind. I think Kai was probably already trapped there - maybe in 1994 and that limbo was created for him.

I like Damon & Elena better when they're not together. I think spiting them up has improved the show.

Tyler/Liv is just totally out of the blue. I think they needed more build-up instead of just jumping into it out of nowhere.

I'm not really liking Caroline this season so far. I think she's too much like Season 1 Caroline and I need her to be Season 2 Caroline instead.

  2. yeah i can't see elena because this isn't elena, and yeah kai is the new Big Bad and he IS sort of likeable and unlikeable but i want to know what he is and how he got stuck (if he IS even stuck) in the '94 dimension with damon and bonnie maybe he's worse than all the Big Bads we've seen in the series and this dimension was created just for him even though he seems sort of human, and with stefan i can't tell if his humanity switch is on or off, at times it looks like it's on then other times it seems it's off, i'm liking caroline and enzo's friendship and stefan is definitely no Winchester

Interesting points about Kai, I think why he is there in 94 is a very intriguing mystery. And lol yes, Stefan is no Winchester although his attempt to start over after losing his brother put me a bit in mind of how Sam and Dean did that too a few times. :)

Cool theory about Kai's role, and Bonnie and Damon getting out. I do think Caroline is a little whiny so far this season and yes, I'd like to see her even out a bit, though I always enjoy her character.

  5. As far as stefan's vendetta against enzo is concerned, although he was justified to take revenge but ganging up with a random vampire hunter is a douchy move on his part.I have been one of the biggest fans of stefan since the beginning of the series, but i have to say i am feeling more sympathy towards enzo's character at this point & disliking stefan as we go along more and more each episode!I kinda liked the less whiny mopey version of elena this episode,it's so refreshing when she's not pining for one of the salvatore brothers.I give props to caroline for confessing her feelings to both stefan & elena in one day,u go girl! That takes a tremendous amount of courage knowing that ur feelings won't be reciprocated any time soon!Although at this point,i personally think stefan doesn't deserve caroline TBH.She is better with any other person that is not stefan or even enzo.As for bamon, this was the best highlight of this fun light episode. As far as kai is concerned,we already know from the spoilers that in episode 8,we will get to meet kai's father-Mr.Parish,a powerful warlock, who entrapped his only son into this 1994's time warp to punish him,the reason still being unclear. As for bonnie,as per spoiler,it's very clear that damon will realise that only one can get out using magic and she will be stuck in that hellhole.Kai & damon gets out somehow. As we all know enzo will somehow break free from tripp's clutches and he is the unexpected guest who shows up at stefan's doorstep to give him the shock of his life,it should be interesting to see this weird duo dynamic since we know now matt and caroline will also team up with them to face tripp. That should be a whole lot of fun.As for sarah,i'm pretty sure she's tripp's daughter and since she's ransacking the salvatore/lockwood mansion,i'm still not clear on that one,i would say she's looking for something specific.Overall, very fulfilling episode.Lovely review & looking forward to the 1st flashback episode of the season! Can't wait!

  6. Great review!
Bonnie and Damon storyline is the most interesting part of the show. I think Kai will be a good villain,he looks a little psychotic.
Caroline was very brave when she confessed her feelings to Elena. But I always thought that Steroline as a romantic relationship is a little forced. I like them as friends.
Elena is very funny and I like her. The drama will come later when Damon comes back. Let's enjoy the moment now!

  8. Damon and Bonnie are killing it so far, looking forward to their scenes each week. True, Enzo is like Damon Season 1 but to me he is great, after all this is not real life and I enjoy him. Stefan's ass needed to be kicked, and I hope they make Stefan more interesting this season but please not by killing Enzo.

Elena seems to be really weird, with her memories gone about Damon. I still think the compulsion act was kind of lame, but I am still open about it as long she gets her memories back.

I enjoyed the episode and loved reading your review. Great job! It was exciting to see Caroline admit her feelings for Stefan. Don't know how I feel about Kai yet. I was surprised at the Stefan ending, killing Enzo after all. But it was a nice twist.

So far, this season can be said it's better than the previous 3 in terms of plot and character utilization .. I like everyone now including Elena whom i hated with a passion since she got with Damon.. i hope Kai is kept as the big bad psychopath and not turn him into another Silas.. Caroline can use a lil of conflict in her life but they like her to be the sunshine all the time..
Bamon continue to be THE big positive thing about each episode.. I'm not really looking forward to them returning :( Ian and Kat should really do a TVD-spin off and that would ROCK!
    great review Virginia

Thanks! Gosh, I hate to think of Damon ditching Bonnie and fleeing back to the real world himself after their friendship has become so strong...I hope if that does happen, he tries to save her as well. I agree it should be very fun to see the aftermath of Enzo not dying and facing Stefan again, and the idea of them teaming up with Caroline and Matt sounds interesting!

Thank you! I also think Steroline is forced and I've always felt that way, though I understand why a lot of people root for them, since the Stefan/Caroline friendship is quite poignant. I just much prefer them as friends.

I enjoy Enzo a lot too, and think he can redeem himself a little bit while keeping that mischievous spark in his eyes. :)

Thank you! I was really grateful I knew Michael Malarkey had been promoted to series regular, making me doubt they'd kill him and just more frustrated with Tripp and Stefan than anything else, but it was a good cliffhanger!

OMG agree, I love the songs in that part of the show, and "I Swear" was included this week, too. Classic!

I also would like to see Kai turn into an awesome big bad, as I think he has tremendous potential. I don't think the show has yet recovered from the loss of Klaus in terms of replacing such a great villain, so maybe this is that chance, I hope!

  19. I sooo enjoyed the part where Stefan caught Liam checking Elena out and didn't give a ... More of that please!I like Liam.I hope he doesn't get a supernatural background like Aaron. The show needs more humans.

I love the idea of Stefan and Elena *not* getting back together and love their friendship. Hope the show can keep it up!

  22. I think the reason why so many ppl like the 6th season so much is bc it's love triangle-free! I hope they don't mess it up by forcing an E/C/S triangle.

  23. I don't like Stelena as friedns and Steroline as a couple, I want Stelena back together. I don't even like Caroline this season.
