The Originals - Alive and Kicking - Review

This week’s episode was one big family reunion. We saw through flashbacks some of the history between Kol, Elijah and Klaus (it was a little weird that Rebekah was absent). Davina briefly lost control of Mikael. Hayley regains the confidence of some of the werewolves. Elijah and Marcel work together to convince Davina to give the stake back. Esther continues to put her plan (whatever that may be) into motion. Klaus and Elijah realize that both of their parents are alive and in New Orleans.

Best showdown: Last week I said that the new Esther wasn’t really doing it for me. Well this week I’m impressed. The conversation with Klaus was just charged with so much tension. You can kind of see in his eyes when he realized that the girl sitting in front of him is his mother. Esther is still crazy though. Their conversation kind of reminded me of a quote I came across on the internet recently. “Knowledge is knowing Frankenstein isn't the monster, but wisdom is knowing Frankenstein is the monster.” Esther keeps saying her children are monsters but she’s the one who created them. They were never even given a choice. By trying to kill them, she’s once again taking their choice away from them. Although I’m not so sure that’s her plan this time. Because if she’s trying to kill them, bringing two of her sons back from the end would seem pointless.

Favorite Original: Kol is back! Seeing Nate in the flashbacks gave me hope that Kol will be in his actual body soon. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Daniel, but come on) Last week I was a little confused as to why Kol would side with his mother and Finn over Klaus and Elijah. I know they were a little on the outs when Kol died, but at least they weren’t actively trying to kill him. We found out this week that Esther told Kol that she has great plans for him. Although I have a feeling that Kol’s loyalty is decreasing my the minute. That was clear when he didn’t tell Esther about Mikael being back. Unlike Finn who is as loyal as a Golden Retriever.

Favorite friendship: I loved the bond we saw in the flashbacks between Elijah and Marcel. It breaks my heart that Elijah gave that up for Klaus’ redemption. Marcel clearly has no idea what happened, he think Elijah hates him. I hope Elijah tells him the truth though, I’d love to see them having a relationship in the present day. Although Elijah would have to stop threatening Davina.

Most badass character: I am in love with Davina right now. Granted, bringing back Mikael was not the best idea. He’d clearly turn on her the first chance he gets. But I can’t remember the last time someone stood against Klaus this boldly (and was not related to him) or Mikael for that matter. I takes some serious guts to pull this off. And unlike Mikael in his revenge, Davina wants to make sure that her friends are safely unsired first. She’s thought of pretty much everything. I’m guessing her plan to get rid of Mikael afterwards is to make him kill himself. Too bad we already know her plan will never work, there’s no way they’d kill off their lead and half the cast of ‘The Vampire Diaries’.
Favorite scene: I love the conversations about Hope. The lack of mention concerns me. It means that they still have a long way before they can bring her back. There are still too many enemies around. The conversation between Klaus and Hayley may have been brief but it was still very emotional. I love seeing them both protective of their little girl. I hope she gets mentioned a little more next week.

What I need: Something I really want to see (besides Tatia, but apparently we’ll be getting that soon) is what happened between their departure of New Orleans and Elijah’s first appearance on ‘The Vampire Diaries’. I always thought that Kol had been in that coffin for a few hundred years. But now we saw that he had been briefly undaggered while the Original siblings were staying in New Orleans. Kol’s clothes however do not match the ones that he was wearing when he first appeared on ‘The Vampire Diaries’. This leads me to believe that Kol was undaggered again somewhere in between early 1900’s and 2011(?). I’m assuming by Elijah, because that would explain why Kol wouldn’t be furious at him in the present day. We know that Elijah got separated from Klaus and Rebekah during their big escape from Mikael. So there had to have been some big falling out between Klaus and Elijah to make Elijah go from wanting to sacrifice himself for Klaus, to wanting to kill him. I’m assuming the events that took place in Chicago happened about 10 years later, give or take. So I have a feeling Rebekah being daggered again plays into this somehow. I do hope they show us what really happened at some point in the show. Not necessarily this season, for now I’m happy with the Tatia backstory.
Best quotes
Hayley: “I am a mess. I cry all day. I feed all night. All I can think about is how much I miss my daughter.” Klaus: “Do you think you’re alone in that pain?” Hayley: “Have you even thought about her once.” Klaus: “I have not stopped thinking about her. When it pains me, I seek comfort in the idea of what I would do to those who would harm her.”
Kol: “I was knocked out during the attack. I never saw a thing.”

So that's it for this week. Check in again next week to read my review of 'Every Mother's Son'. Let me know in the comments what you thought of this week's episode.
