Blue Bloods - Partners - Review: "The Reagan's Are Back"

Blue Bloods returned to CBS on Friday with another exceptional episode from the Reagan's. Blue Bloods quickly became one of my favorite shows, so I jumped at the chance to review it. This episode was all about partners in the NYPD, let's go!

Firstly, when a Lieutenant is trying to calm down and restrain someone with a mental disease, when he starts frightening the public and presenting a danger to everyone around him, the lieutenant orders him to be tasered, but did not consider the incoming traffic behind him, this order affected him in many ways throughout the episode.

This was then up to Frank to sort out, when Frank was told that he was not allowed to talk to his officer, I thought he was offended. Because lieutenant McCarthy was one of his people. At the press conference with Mayor Poole, Frank was trying to protect McCarthy's image as best as possible, but when the Mayor spoke Frank sat there silent, wondering whether this job was still for him.

Throughout the episode, we see Frank's feelings of the job play out, at one point we do even hear him day "I hate this job", Because Frank was stuck between a rock and a hard place, on one hand he had orders from the Mayor to not talk to his officer (he ended up talking to him anyway), but on the other hand he had Sgt. Gormley sticking up for his partner which he had for 5 years.

Overall, in all season's of Blue Bloods I have never seen someone higher than Frank force him to let his officers down. But at the end of the episode, when Frank speaks about the risk that police officers are put through every single day, and the split second decisions they have to make, that's the Blue Bloods I know and love.

Over on Jamie's side of the family, when he and Eddie are responding to a domestic, and someone knocks her out of the way. This sets off Jamie (in front of his Sergeant) that ultimately questions whether he does have romantic feelings for Eddie.

Jamie is then called into Renzulli's office, where he says that if he does have romantic feelings for Eddie, he will be reassigned a new partner. Renzulli states that if romantic feelings are evident between partner's, it can affect how partners look out for each other, and would definitely affect their judgement, This was definitely a great scene between Renzulli and Jamie.

When Jamie consults Erin for help, she is more than happy to point out that his feelings towards her are very obvious. She states that "You have to remember that I was there for your first crush. Theresa Mancini and she was bossy and opinionated and it's kind of your thing.". After Jamie has realised that he does have some feelings for Eddie, he decides to block them out and not act upon them. He goes to Sgt. Renzulli and asks to continue the partnership. When Eddie and Jamie meet (in the men's changing room?), he decides not to go out with her, but to spend time with his grandfather. This is definitely a step in the right direction for young Jamie.

Finally, Danny and Baez are on a protection detail for drug transport, when they get ambushed, in typical Danny style he fights back, only to fall off the back of the truck when it turns a corner, nice try Danny. The two of them made a turning point in their partnership also.

When Danny goes and visits Baez in hospital recovering, he goes off at Danny for always making the decisions in their partnership (like...driving?), and she is sick of it. But where has this angry Baez been hiding? I do kind of get Baez' point though, a little consideration from Danny would go a long way,

When Baez' brother takes a bullet for her at the end of the episode, this was exceptional. During this scene Baez admitted to Danny that he was the closest thing she will ever have to family. He was her true partner and she knows he will always be there for her. This scene was incredibly well done, but also heartbreaking as well as emotional. The partnership of Danny and Baez definitely took a turning point in this episode.

Overall, Blue Bloods opened with a fantastic episode, I especially loved the dinner table scene this episode, the siblings acting like children again, was a lot of fun to watch. But the drama of Frank, Jamie and Danny this episode was created in such a way that it can affect the real life issues of being a cop and being in a partnership. That's just what I love about Blue Bloods.

Quotes

"Cops are held to a higher standard of accountability than the rest of the population, as it should be. But never forget that they are people, too, men and women subject to the same doubts and regrets that all of us are. I'm not asking for anyone to cut us slack. Not at all. But a little recognition for the conditions under which our men and women operate, that'd go a long way."
- Frank Reagan.

"I never have to worry about trusting you. And I never have to wonder if you'll have my back. Because you're the only person who's never disappointed me."
- Det. Baez.

"Think I'll go put out some fires. Before you get a chance to stoke them."
- Deputy Commissioner Moore.

"You should stay pissed off more often"
- Danny Reagan.

"This is like we're back in fifth grade"
- Erin Reagan.
