2014 Character Cup - 1F

19 Jul 2014

Congratulations to Vincent Keller, Sheldon Cooper, Inchabod Crane, and Olivia Dunham for moving on to round 2. It was a pretty easy day for the winners with the closest contest winning with 55% of the vote. Today's votes should be very interesting, since two of them are a tossup for me as far as predicitons go. How are your predictions faring? Have there been any big surprises for you? Thanks for keeping the conversation going. If you are suddenly having trouble posting, try verifying your Disqus account. Until tomorrow, happy voting!

Contest Results so far

Polls close - Saturday around 4:30 pm CST

Prediction contest results - Yesterday saw a lot of 100% predictions and I'm happy to finally be included on that list. Congratulations to Sharon Seymour, Rob F., It Depends on What Fails, Janna, and Famous 4 It for also predicting correctly. Janna continues to be in the lead with 1 missed prediction. Nice job!

TV Talk Topic - Today is all about family relationships on TV, both blood and created. Who are your favorite TV familes of past and present? What trends do you see in TV families these days? Who has the best father-son, father-daughter, mother-son, mother-daughter, brother-brother, brother-sister, and sister-sister relationships? Are there any kind of family relationships you particularly like? Are there any that drive you nuts?

Side note - I have TV Talk topics up through the first half of round 3. Is there anything in particular you'd like to talk about? Leave your suggestions in the comments below, tweet me @dahne1, or e-mail me at dahne@spoilertv.com

  1. I admit it. I am a sucker for good family stories, especially if they are brothers. I was lucky to grow up with some of the best TV families around - the Huxtables, Keatons, Ingalls, Seavers, Arnolds, Banks, Drummond/Jacksons. Reruns included the Bradys, Munsters, Ricardos, Kramdens, Sanfords, Cleavers, Taylors, and more. I lived for family TV and in some ways I still do. I find the most fulfilling relationships on TV today are not the romances, which tend to be what everything goes towards, but the familial and friendships that in some genres can seem like endangered species. It's particularly fascinating when characters create their own family, to know that the team goes beyond just work but truly care for each other in a non-romantic way.

The biggest family trend that I have seen, besides the non-traditional family unit, is in comedies. I grew up in the TV family comedy heyday but for a long time family comedies were more about putting each other down than building each other up. Sometimes it was hard to know if they even cared about each other. Call it the Barone era. Now I'm excited to see the rise of TV family comedy again. Yes, they still put each other down but there are so many heartfelt moments that you know they love each other. Enlisted and The Goldbergs were too prime examples of family in comedy this year. Still hoping for Enlisted to be picked up by somebody because I am going to miss those Hill brothers. Trophy Wife was an excellent example of taking a blended family and making it work. It was nice to see a family show that included so many different relationship types that worked as one. Growing Up Fisher was an awesome look at families going through divorce but not hating each other.

My favorites (of which I am missing millions):

    1. Brothers: Brothers are my favorite TV relationship and no one out brothers the Winchesters. No one. They are and probably will always be the epitome of a brother relationship to me. After all, these two have actually died for each other.

Runners up : Stiles and Scott on Teen Wolf, Hill brothers on Enlisted, Peter and Neal on White Collar, Wally and the Beaver on Leave it to Beaver, Barry and Adam on The Goldbergs, Roman and Drake on Star-Crossed, Hank and Evan on Royal Pains

    2. Father-daughter: Buffy and Giles on Buffy, Veronica and Keith on Veronica Mars, Artie and Claudia on Warehouse 13, Castle and Alexis on Castle, Gibbs and Abby on NCIS, Simon and Sydney on The Crazy Ones

    3. Brother-sister: I'm also a fan of brothers and sisters. By far my favorite there is Everett and Delia on Everwood. Also Bellamy and Octavia on The 100, Eliot and Parker on Leverage, Michael/Max/Isabel on Roswell

    4. Father-son: It's hard to top Walter and Peter on Fringe. Also Duncan and Richie on Highlander

    5. Mother-son: The most improved definitely goes to Maddie and Michael on Burn Notice

    6. Mother-daughter: No one tops Lorelai and Rory from Gilmore Girls

    7. Sisters: I am particularly fond of Abbie and Jenny from Sleepy Hollow. Also Lucy and Ethel from I Love Lucy, Emma and Maggie from Playing House, and Jane and Maura from Rizzoli & Isles

    8. Grandparents: I'm particularly fond of Burt and Virginia on Raising Hope

    9. Father-father-in-law: I adore Murray and Pops together

  2. Just Walter White for me today.

  3. Today's voting is actually the only part of the contest where I don't watch any of the characters and therefore it's the one I feel the most apathy for. Mostly I am voting against instead of for.

    1. Nathan - he was charming and industrious in the first 2 seasons of Haven. I don't watch GoT.
    2. Cristina - she was the best thing about the pilot of Grey's and I just could not get into Fargo
    3. Olivia - I got addicted and marathoned Scandal season 1 largely because this character surprised me. Also I haven't seen Breaking Bad.
    4. Max - she's snarky fun. So is Damon, but she isn't in a love triangle from hell.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Tyrion Lannister (really hope he goes far in this competition), Lorne Malvo, and Walter White.

    ReplyDelete
  5. SHIELDNCISArrowfan18 July 2014 at 22:46

none of the character....don't watch these show at all

    ReplyDelete
  6. Voted for Lorne Malvo, probably the best tv villain I've ever seen. BBT was superb in that role.

    ReplyDelete
  7. João Victor18 July 2014 at 22:48

Tyrion, Lorne Malvo, Walter and Damon!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Wow, we got Tyrion, Walter White and Lorne in one day? Pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think Tyrion will definitely get to round 3 and maybe round 4 before being eliminated. He was #10 in the nomination round and considering 24 characters from GoT were nominated, it has a lot of love here.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1) 1000% Tyrion - Haven is great and i really like the Nathan character but , Tyrion is the best character on game of thrones by a mile everything he has said in season 4 has been so powerful especially the end speech he gave at his trial It wouldn't be Game Of Thrones without him.

    2) Christina Yang - Christina is my favorite character on Greys , i love her addiction to surgery's and how she is always sarcastic and her bond with Meredith is very heartwarming. Plus i watched about 4 episodes of Fargo but just couldn't get into it.

    3) Walter White.

    4) Neither , i dont watch TVD or 2 Broke Girls.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't watch any of these shows except Vampire Diaries, and I really haven't liked Damon this year.

So I didn't vote for any today.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Game of Thrones had the most nominees in the running of any show, so for Tyrion to get more nominations than all other of his male GoT contendors is saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Damon's character has gone downhill too, being in the love triangle.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That tends to be the case for every character unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I voted for Cristina Yang and Damon Salvatore, although Damon is my least favorite character on TVD. Not a whole lot of choices this round for someone like me.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tyrion, Olivia and Damon for me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. For the millionth time, there is no love triangle anymore!!!!!!!! It ended in season 4 and it REALLY ended in 5x18.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Justyna Kubica18 July 2014 at 23:21

    1. I like them both, but I feel like Nathan needs my vote much more, plus I was just re-watching Haven!
    2. Cristina (haven't seen Fargo yet)
    3. Olivia (don't watch BB)
    4. Damon (barely know 2BG)

    ReplyDelete
  19. For the millionth time, I only watched season one!!!!!!!! Just chill.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ha! Yes, I'd say Tyrion definitely has the advantage today. Most people haven't even heard of Haven.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A lot of these shows are smaller and not as well known, so I think many people will be in the same boat as us.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks like I went with the consensus votes today: Tyrion, Cristina, Walter, & Damon.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, but he's really become a jerk. He has Elena yet has to be a jerk to his brother, who has sucked everything up and accepted the relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  24. WW and MB. TV Topic: Veronica and Keith Mars.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't watch any of the shows in todays poll. I used to watch The Vampire Diaries but not anymore, even if I did I never liked Damon anyway :P So no votes for me today, I can still talk about the TV topic though :)

Today's TV Topic: This is pretty simple for me, give me a good bromance and I'll stick with your show forever. I much prefer friendship bromances rather than blood related brothers too, there are just too many other things I don't like that go with biological brothers. My favourite bromance is also simple, Scott & Stiles from Teen Wolf . Have been my favourite from the moment I started Teen Wolf & they probably always will be. What makes their relationship even more special for me os that the two actors, Tyler & Dylan, are also the best of friends. The only other TV family relationships that stand out for me are Melissa & Scott (mother-son) and Stilinski & Stiles (father-son), both are also from Teen Wolf. Since someone is probably is going to ask me about Sam & Dean I'll just say this: their bro moments on SPN annoy me far more than interest me or make me feel for them, I know they would literally do anything for each other I've just never felt attached to them.

Other family or family-like relationships I like are Malcolm & Vanessa (father-daughter) from Penny Dreadful, it's a bit soon in the show to say I really like these next two but I do :P Michael & Alex (father-son) and Ethan & Alex (brother-brother), both from Dominion. I'm also fond of Bellamy & Octavia (brother-sister) from The 100. Not many female relationships but there ya go, Scott & Stiles is the only relationship I really love and feel for. :P

    ReplyDelete
  26. Love that Dominion family vibe stuff too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It was the scene with when Alex brought Michael to the hospital and didn't want to leave him that did it for me, Ethan & Alex have had a few moments, some where they just say it that they are brothers/best friends :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tyrion Lannister (he has big chances to win), Walter White and Damon Salvatore.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I only voted for Damon, still my favorite character on TVD, I doubt that will ever change. I like the relationship Stefan and Damon, and Elena ... don't care who she is with. Those three actors are still great to watch...

    ReplyDelete
  30. start_wearing_purple19 July 2014 at 01:30

Tyrion today. I liked Nathan on Haven but Peter Dinklage has just made Tyrion a larger than life character.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tyrion Lannister and Lorne Malvo for me today!

    Family Relationships:
Well since as everyone knows, I'm a Bad Robot fan, I think J.J. Abrams has been a trend setter and was ahead of the curve, even when Felicity was on, as slowly a lot of the problems the main characters had stemmed from the problems they either had, or became aware of, with their family. --

But I think Alias is really where we see Bad Robot's more direct family saga begin, and Lost was kind of like Felicity in the sense that it was the audience who saw all of the connections and it was more about these people becoming a family, even though I think the series is largely about Jack and Christian, but more over the family saga appeared again and again with Fringe, Alcatraz, and Revolution, and potentially with Undercovers--and even Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz had the idea for OUAT when they were working on Felicity--and they have really manic-fied the family saga!!

However the show that outdoes relationships and relationship dynamics is Game of Thrones!! Watching the show and reading the novels has been a daunting, but exciting task! I constantly find myself realizing interesting parallels and juxtapositions between this story, which I think may be about generational and nature-orientated injustices! The Lannisters in particular I find intriguing, as the main Lannister family presented has a lot of commonalities with each other, but yet each has something individualized and/or more exclusively shared with another Lannister, let alone other characters in the series!

I agree whole heartedly that TV has become an unique foray of "people dynamics", that although often still have romantic relationships, also tend to have various other kinds of relationships presented too, like parental or even buddy-best friend-partner kinds of relationships (Supernatural, Almost Human, Person of Interest, Revolution). Even sometimes, as we were saying a couple of days ago, I think we even see things like frein-emmies with hero and villain relationships, which I think can be a lot of fun!!! :)

  32. 1. I don't watch either show. Have no intention to either.
    2. Cristina - oh how I'm going to miss her. Grey's just won't be the same.
    3. Walter White, enough said.
    4. Max - 2 Broke Girls is one of the shows I go to when I need a good laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Tyrion( like Nathan but Tyrion. is more complex), Christina(haven't watched Grey's in years but am not familiar with other character), Olivia, and Damon (best dialog on TVD)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your first one made me laugh. There's a few today that I have no intention of watching either.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's okay. I'm sure whatever polls come tomorrow will be great.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like the frenemies relationship as long as it builds into something substantial. If it is more about gossiping and social status then I can leave it behind. I am one of the few that wishes Game of Thrones were on another station besides premium cable. I think I would like that show but all the nudity and sex and incest put me off to a degree that I won't watch another episode. I find the storyline interesting but the execution too much. Just curious, do you have any specific family relationships, not necesarily from GoT, that you have found particularly well developed?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah Ethan tells Arika they're like brothers.

Alex not wanting to leave Michael's side was a really nice scene. I was sad to see Alex taken away.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Alex freaking out over Michael being stabbed has been one of the high points of the show. I hope they continue to explore their relationship and not set up contrived drama to keep Alex from trusting him.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Voted for poor Nathan :(

As for familial relationships, my ultimate favourites are the ones on Once Upon a Time. Specifically Emma/Charming. In fact it's the only show where I care more about the family relations, and not the romantic ones.

I recently caught up with Arrow, and I really like the relationship between Thea/Oliver, and Det. Lance and his daughters too.

I actually love Brother/Sister relationships. That protective element is something I really appreciate. I wish I had a brother lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. So what you're saying is they didn't learn from history so it's going to come back and bite them? I agree that it should always be family first, contrived drama last.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I tend to not want to watch shows if their fans yell at me about them. You might want to try a softer approach with a whole lot less exclamation marks in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm a big fan of older brother and younger sister relationships on TV. I appreciate that protective vibe as well. Thea is actually the first person to humanize Oliver for me and to make me something in him I could grasp at. For most of season one I just thought he was a grade A douche. Some of my favorite scenes in teh pre-winter hiatus season 2 were Quentin and Sarah. I always loved Quentin and that just made both characters better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. To be honest, Keith Mars wa smy favorite character on the show. He was the first "modern" dad on TV who I really looked up to and felt a connection with. While I think he should have been stricter with Veronica after some of the stunts she pulled, he was a great guy with a great heart who really loved his kid. He appeared at a time when TV dads, when they were even present, were mostly either complete idiots or douches. Because of that his character was not only compelling but refreshing to see as well.

    ReplyDelete
  44. start_wearing_purple19 July 2014 at 03:27

Though I watch it, I do agree on GoT. There is a lot of nudity and sex for the sake of nudity and sex. While I'm not conservative I'd rather that sex and nudity have a reason in a show rather than "because we can." That said, Dinklage's speeches as Tyrion are well worth it.

Well developed families in shows: Alias' Bristow family. I'd argue that The Shield develops the Mackey family brilliantly as Vic's family was affected by his choices.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I definitely include Bobby as a father to Dean and Sam. In fact, since I loathe John Winchester and Mary is often used as a pawn, he's the parent I prefer for them. I limited myself to one relationship per show or else he would have been right at the top of the list. As I was trying to come up with mother-child and sisters, I had a very hard time too. It really hit home how many shows I watch are missing one or both parents, mostly the mom. It's kind of a shame and has me wondering what other shows I can watch with awesome moms in it. I feel like I have a TV void right now. I also obviously need more good sister stories. I debated adding Annie and her sister on Covert Affairs but then realized I didn't remember the sister's name, only the actress so that was not a good sign. Obviously either I am not watching the right shows or TV has a dearth of female relationships. It feels like the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The Shield is another show that I always hear good things about but somehow have never had time to watch yet. It's right there with The Wire.

I'm an admitted prude so anyting over a light PG-13 makes me uncomfortable, but I also really hate nudity/profanity/violence for their own sake. If it feels liek a ploy, I am completely out. Black Sails was a great recent example of a show I wish I could brain bleach the pilot from my mind. It practically screamed, "We're only showing this because you paid to get our channel and we know you want it. Damn the plot."

    ReplyDelete
  47. start_wearing_purple19 July 2014 at 03:55

I've been called a prude for my views on what I tend to call an obsessive need to show sex on television. Really, if it doesn't add to the story then it's just pointless.

I tried The Wire and just couldn't get into it. I'll try again some time. But The Shield is another one I'd highly suggest. It has a great continuous story and more often than not the sex and violence are required for the story. I'm also a major critic about how shows end, I'm rarely satisfied. To that end, The Shield has an incredible ending for all the major characters. Michael Chiklis, CCH Pounder, Walton Goggins, and Jay Carnes make this a must see not just as cop drama but as a morality tale in general.

    ReplyDelete
  48. "Really, if it doesn't add to the story then it's just pointless ratings fodder."

Exactly! I am glad to hear that The Shield ended well. It's one thing to marathon a show, but if everyone hated the end then I feel even wore about the time I spent on a show. I'll put it in a higher tier on my to-watch list, but right now that list is pretty full and I still haven't caught up on the fall shows yet. Heck, I'm currently behind in summer shows. Argh!

    ReplyDelete
  49. start_wearing_purple19 July 2014 at 04:04

Heh, I know the feeling. I have a friend who keeps suggesting movies and shows I HAVE TO see, I always tell him "They're on the list.

But take it from a stranger who seems to share a similar TV viewpoint: Alias and The Shield are 2 must watch series. Both are brilliantly acted with compelling stories and truly awesome endings. I suggest Alias first but The Shield is a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Alias is #1 on the list because of all the great things said here. Plus it was already close to the top of the list before the contest started. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. start_wearing_purple19 July 2014 at 04:10

    Excellent choice then ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Family relationships on tv....In general it's an 'Eh' column for me. Neither agree or Disagree. I rarely watch sitcoms. Only 4 are must see tv on my DVR Neighbors, BBT, Mike and Mindy, and HIMYM (and no I was not happy with that series finale)

That said...I really enjoy many of the parings you mention ( Buffy and Giles on Buffy, Veronica and Keith on Veronica Mars, Artie and Claudia on Warehouse 13) Three stand out as paring that are a huge part of why I watched those shows Castle and Alexis on Castle (Alexis growing up is removing them as a draw for Castle), Eliot and Hardison on Leverage, and Walter and Peter on Fringe.

I do enjoy the created families. The Scooby Gang created on Grimm is an element I enjoy quite a bit. Also the family created on Leverage. The siblings (wait...considering Hardison and Parker are a couple...I can't say siblings....yes I can! Parker is Eliot's sister in law!!!! :-D [yes, I pleased myself with that solution] ) anyway... The siblings going off on their own was the perfect place to end that series.

But, for the most part they're the icing on my shows not the draw but they are secondary.

    ReplyDelete
  53. When it comes to Bobby I don't have any caveats. Bobby's those boy's father. John basically went nuts (PTSD nuts) and was incapable of parenting.

I think the problem with the sister on Covert Affairs (is she even on in the current season? I just caught up with season 3 and I didn't see her at all) is that she's not really a character but a plot device.

You're watching way more touchy feely shows than I am. I'm kidding. When I'm not watching action, syfy, or horror...I'm watching soaps (Devious Maids, Dallas, etc) which, despite them being dramas I don't think they're considered to be in the same genre as Heartland or what's that law show with Margulies?

    ReplyDelete
  54. In sci-fi/fantasy it seems like the women are often the first to go if they're not the main characters. They are also heavy on male leads, unless the show relies on romance as one of its core themes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Agreed but it is a real shame. Almost all genre literature for kids and YA kill off the parents too. I have seen kids starting to get bored with those books so my guess is people are going to be tired of it on TV too. That's generally how the cycle goes. Personally I would lvoe to see grandma shoot zombies, but I'd rather have great female characters in sci fi.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't mind anything up to light Rated R. Depends how heavy the profanity/nudity/violence is. It's situational. I can understand, for example, a War movie to have a lot of violence and swearing. I can't watch a movie where they swear every other word though. Like you said, I'd consider it unnecessary by then.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Me too. Alex and Michael are the main reason I watch the show. Especially since I'm not big on politics.

    ReplyDelete
  58. No learning from history when they love the same face. Sigh. I miss Rose. Really liked her with Damon, however little they were together. Miss human Elena. I liked her morals.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree that Bobby is the Winchesters' dad. He was also the best character for awhile there. I think the sister had a decent relationship with Annie even without knowing the secret. As for if she's still on, I don't know because I think I only got through season 2.

Do you mean the comedies when you refer to feel good shows, because the only dramas I listed that I would consider feel good in the least are Everwood and Gilmore Girls and GG is definitely more feel good than Everwood was. I do like comedies with heart but I don't think of them as touchy feely, mostly because I'm laughing through them. Growing Up Fisher and Trophy Wife were definitely comedies although GUF leaned farther into heartfelt.

Sorry but you are on your own with nighttime soaps. I hate them as much as daytime ones so the only thing I saw of Dallas was the premiere and I've never seen Devious Maids. I think Heartland is a Canadian show since I never heard of it until about a year ago in some discussion here. I'm not sure what it is about so I am not sure if it is a soap or not. However I have it on good authority that The Good Wife is NOT a soap. Wilson just spent several paragraphs convincing me of this. The soapiest thing I watched lately was The Night Shift and yes, that got very soapy. So much so that I won't be watching season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  60. One reason I liked Dark Angel and Fringe. Dominion's great for strong females too, in a political way.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think the females are largely shafted for the males in Dominion but they are definitely more interesting. I do like that Claire has stepped up because she's the only one guaranteed decent screen time. My problem with Dark Angel is that Max got far too whiny in teh second season. I wish they had kept her as a kick butt female instead of emoangsting over Logan

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yeah wouldn't consider those in the same boat as Heartland. Heartland's a true family show.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I used to not watch sitcoms but a few of them became appointment TV for me last season. Of course most of those were canceled, so you know. Alexis was the only reason I watched season 1 of Castle. I pretty much thought he was a douche until I saw him interact with Alexis. It also helped that he toned down from the pilot. I was going to put Eliot/Parker/Hardison on the list as well but then i thought people would think love triangle and that's not for me. To be honest, I think they should have continued Leverage with just these 3 because Nate was always the worst part of the show for me. Always!

    ReplyDelete
  64. The politics would be my favorite part if it wasn't for Whele. He just needs to die.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Time wise the women get less time on Dominion, but they're at least independent thinkers. They make up their own minds. Arika's my favorite cunning wise.

    ReplyDelete
  66. For me the 3 levels of cursing are: polite company, high school, and Deadwood. I won't do the last and the middle is iffy. It's one reason I am dropping The Leftovers. The other is that there is literally no plot. It's just a bunch of people with PSTD.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Christina - Id hardly vote against Lorne Malvo but yang was the mais reason i watch greys anatomy all these years.

Walter White - Nothing much to say, just the best character of the best tv show ever!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ha. Yeah he gets on my nerves just cause it's hard to knock him down a peg. So appreciated William's and Michael's comebacks in episode 3.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I go to college so high school level is fine with me. lol ;)

    ReplyDelete
  70. I liked Claire balckmailing him even if it did let out William's secret earlier than I'd hoped.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, the protective element (as long as its not overprotective) is something I really like about family relations on shows too.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I teach elementary kids so even polite company is too much for me to use professionally and personally 98% of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ha. Yeah, if you're not used to hearing swear words it's hard. I didn't get more comfortable with it until high school. Didn't swear at all until then either.

College was the first time I ever dropped a F-bomb. I just wasn't having a good day in the dorms. ha

But it is still rare compared to my classmates, for me to even say any swear word besides crap and hell - minor league stuff.

I largely blame Dean Winchester for making me used to hearing words like *b*tch.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I use damn and hell and blame Dean Winchester for adding douche to my lexicon, which I never would have been appalled to say even 3 years into Supernatural. I also use freaking and sucks a lot, which are apparently bad words in elementary school. I had no idea. I'm a middle school teacher at heart.

    ReplyDelete
  75. lol Yep damn is on my blame Dean Winchester list too. I actually use that one decently often considering my aversion to "high level" swear words. Mostly in reaction to events on TV. Usually comes out like a sassy women who snaps her fingers afterwards. XD

  76. We're doing Some Assembly Required on Sunday if you want to join us. We'll do School Hard the following week. What times are you available in Central Standard Time and we'll see if we can make it work.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Bwah! Now I have all kinds of gifs bouncing through my head.

I don't violate the third commandment either. I do however attend church faithfully every week and organize the teen youth group. I couldn't imagine my week without it. Life is too messy and stressful as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I always say my church is nature/the outdoors/animals. I can't sit still on a bench. It hurts my back and all I can think about is what I want to do when I get home or about TV.

It's only at weddings and morbidly, funerals, that I can sit and listen cause then that's family matters.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I tend to blank out at weddings, especially if they are long, because I'm wondering how long I need to stay at the reception before I can make my getaway. I'm fairly introverted and receptions are not my thing,

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm not a hyper type, but at the same time I usually always need to do something. Usually it's hair/pen twirling.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I take notes and that helps me focus. I find that works in meetings for me too.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It's the opposite for me. I am surrounded (literally since I teach in the center of a pod) by people all day constantly at work, which means I value my private time away from people as much as I can in the evenings and on weekends. It's also why I prefer to communicate through social media.

    ReplyDelete
  83. So true! Thea does a lot for Oliver's character. He was totally stone cold initially. The way things ended in season 2 really hurt :( I wish he had told her he's the Arrow. Earlier it might have been too much for her, but it seemed the lesser of two evils by the end finale! I felt so bad for Oliver every time he said Thea's out of the city and safe! If only he knew...

Yes I think bringing in Sara like that was a great move. My absolute favourite moment is in the clock tower: the first time she kills in front of him (if I remember correctly).

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah, I'm glad in Arrow they didn't do it too much. I wonder how they'll handle Emma and her brother in season 4...if they get the chance that is! Who knows with Elsa in town!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I couldn't stand in front of people, even kids, all day like that. I have stage fright. The only time I like attention by a mass amount of people is when competing for something and the rare occasion I'm doing good at it.

I value my private time a lot. After a long day in the summer when I work with my Dad at the store stocking shelves, I hole up in my childhood bedroom (I stay with my parents in the summer) for the whole night.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I haven't seen the second half of the season yet, but I find that the longer characters drag out secrets the worse they get. The clock tower scene with Sarah and Quentin is my favorite too. It was such a great fight scene to begin with, but then afterwards with her hang hanging low and Quentin comforting her - perfection. That scene was rock solid the whole way through.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Teaching is an odd bubble for me. It transforms me into the appearance of an extrovert and challenges my mind all day long. It's never the same so I think that's what helps me get over my normal reticence. That and I'm naturally talented at it. It's also incredibly draining so all that social energy I have for the day is depleted. Not sure if that makes sense because it is late here. I just always feel like I have only so much social energy to give in a day, which has nothing to do with physical energy. Once it's gone, just like physical energy, I have to back away socially and recharge my batteries.

    ReplyDelete
  88. No I get it. My social energy often goes out quicker than physical energy. Especially at night. I'm most awake at late afternoon/early night, but it's also the time I usually start to tire of being social.

    ReplyDelete
  89. My social energy almost always depletes before my mental or physical energy. I tend to be a night owl myself, not fully awakening until about 10 am, which is not a good thing since school starts much earlier. I reach peak energy about primetime and start to wane between 1 and 3 if not on school time. Speaking of which, that is what time it is for me and I'm unusually tired from lugging boxes of books in the basement, so it's good night for me. Hope you have a great night! Thanks for the conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oops! Sorry. Hope I didn't spoil you too badly!

Caity Lotz and Blackthorne are truly superb.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Never apologize for talking about TV months after it happened. Anyone who hasn't seen it deserves to be spoiled. :-P

    ReplyDelete
  92. i dont like him very much but i agree with you he's amazing and one of the best dad on tv ever.

Easy for me again today. Tyrion who is an incredible character, and Damon, who I do still love, even if I can't say the same
For vampire diaries so much anymore

I might be available Sunday if there's a way for you to remind me. In CST, I'm available most days after 6 (7 EST) for at least a month.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Justyna Kubica19 July 2014 at 10:00

Yes, most definitely. Too bad, cause I really enjoy the show, shame not many people know about it.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Sorry. To clarify, when I say 'feel good shows' I'm referring to the Gilmore Girls, Everwood, the Waltons....that kind of show. I think they'd be filed as "Family Drama"

I used to watch a lot of sitcoms. But the problem with them is that, IMHO, in order to get the highest ratings they have to appeal to the most people which usually means derivative shows. There were a few years there where it was bad and I fell out of watching most of them. :-)

I'm usually on my own when it comes to my soaps (especially General Hospital) Hee hee. I was filing Heartland and The Good Wife under touchy feely... It sounds like I'm glad I didn't call it a soap. :-D Dallas surprised me. (It took a few eps) It is the extremely rare revived show that didn't bring it's original cast back just to get people to tune into the pilot. They gave the original cast members stories of their own. Loads of fun (if you like soaps.)

    ReplyDelete
  97. I think sometimes it's about taking shortcuts. The audience is so used to the death of a loved one that we are able to understand a character with only one line of mention of said death but how much richer is the story when get to spend the time with the character before it happens.

    ReplyDelete
  98. One of the reason that I think Teen Wolf stands out is that the parents are present, parenting, and feel real. It is a rarity in a show about and aimed at teens.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I think I'm going to label what happened on Dark Angel the "Whoops the leads seem like a couple but we can't have that" syndrome. (I would have capitalized the first letter of most of those words but...too much typing. :-)

That story was one of those contrivances that, IMHO, frequently hurt the show. I still hear showrunners and network execs use Lois and Clark as the scapegoat for why they can't let the couple get together. pfah I say. :-) Having them get married is NOT what killed Lois an Clark pfah

    ReplyDelete
  100. The episode where they gave us the hint of how they would work together was so good I really thought it was a backdoor pilot for their new show

    ReplyDelete
  101. Finally I could vote in every poll! Tyrion, Lorne Malvo, Walter White and Max Black

    ReplyDelete
  102. I put some exclamation marks because u were wrong about the love triangle being still present, and I was sick of people still complaining about it and saying that show is a crap because there is one, I wasn´t trying to offend you.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Tyrion:He is my favorite character of got. I've already read the books and I knew what wad going to happen in season 4 but Peter Dinklage is an amazing actor and tv show scenes were better tan books scenes many times.
Damon:tvd is my favorite tv show although season 5 has been awful(except the two last episodes).Damon is a great character in my opinion. And I love his relation with Stefan until season 4

    ReplyDelete
  104. On the topic- The more TV that I watch, the more shows I become invested in, I find that I love the friendships more than anything. I'm going to be completely honest without trying to insult anyone, these are just my feelings. There are certain writers, fans and shippers that have made me hate any sign of a romantic relationship. If the show is done right, romance is a wonderful part of the show. FNL - Tami and Eric, Matt and Julie are just examples. Most writers now don't know how to incorporate romance without adding unecessary drama. Triangles, cheating, childish behavior. Then you have those that search for romance where none exists. It's their interpertation of a scene, a line of dialogue. Not what the writers are putting out and not how the actors are portraying it. Then the completely obsessive ones. There is a fine line between being a supportive fan and being completely obsessed with your favorites. If I never read the letters OTP or read endgame one more time, I'd be over the moon happy. All of these behaviors combined, make me stay away from certain sites, fans, twitter accounts etc...because the begging, fighting and insulting is not what I want to see when I search a favorite show. I want to know the plot, the story. What's happening to my favorite characters. With all that out of the way, I tend to enjoy the angst of brothers, the joys of friendships, the love of family. If I can have a romance that doesn't overpower the show or one where fans don't become angry and entitled when things don't go their way, great.
My favorite relationships in the past few years: Sam/Dean, Peter/Neal, Nikita/Birkhoff, Peter/Walter, Jax/Opie, Raven/Clarke, Stiles/Everybody, Daryl/Rick, Diggle/Oliver/Felicity, Cristina/Meredith - tho I stopped watching long ago, Abbie and Ichabod. I have more that you don't want to read. The gist is I love "love" whether it's fighting brothers or friends, and romance in its proper context.

  105. Tyrion Lannister
    Cristina Yang
    Olivia Pope
    Damon Salvatore

Today was easy for me, even though I adore Kat Dennings, I absolutely love Damon, well and Ian Somerhalder!

    ReplyDelete
  106. I love pretty much every relationship on Teen Wolf but I choose the ones that stood out for me, otherwise I'd be here all day! I love all the parents too but Melissa is probably my favourite, I like Kira's parents too but we don't see much of them.

[Kind of spoiler for Penny Dreadful] Malcolm & Vanessa aren't blood related but they do develop a father-daughter relationship. Sorry if that's a big spoiler for you :P

    ReplyDelete
  107. Tyrion Lannister - because Tyrion is one of the most interesting characters on TV. His relationship with his family is a big part of why Tyrion is the survivor he is. It is rear that I feel as much compassion for a character as I do for Tyrion.

Walter White - Even though Walter starts out doing all the bad things to save his family, and ends up doing wrong by them, you just can´t help loving him! His relationship with Hank, Skylar and Jesse is what makes the show so interesting.

Damon - Well, I don´t really find him interesting anymore. He is just a sad shadow of the very interesting character he use to be. I liked him back in the days when he was sassy and flirty.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Awww that sounds really sweet. I'm glad they got some screen time together.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I have such a hard time determining who my favorite parent is that I lump them all together into the character I call Team Parent. They all rock.

Nope, that's not a spoiler. I love created father-daughter relationships as well. Besides, I am of the firm belief that if a TV show has already aired, you lose the right to complain about being spoiled. If I am concerned about being spoiled, I should make sure I've seen it in a prompt manner.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Ha! Liking the actor always makes the character better.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Makes sense. I used to watch a lot of family dramas but recently they have turned to emoangsty for me and forgotten the fun. I did watch a few episodes of Chasing Life and I might go back to it when I have more time, but drawing out April telling her family that she has cancer annoyed the heck out of me. Plus the teen sister is such a brat she was annoying everytime she opened her mouth. I think it's no surprise that most of the comedies I watched got cancelled this season. I tend to hate raunchy shows and that's sadly what sells.

I checked out Dallas simply because I wanted to see how they used the previous cast. I was alive when "Who shot JR?" was the biggest thing going. Even better, I still still know the answer which comes in handy at Trivia Nights. I lvoe how they incoporated both but yeah, it is way too soapy for me so I dropped it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Arika is the best character as far as surprising and willing to do anything. I hope Noma gets more screen time in the future because now that Bixby's gone, I'm leaning towards her.

    ReplyDelete
  113. In my day we called it the Moonlighting Curse. I wish they still believed in it to be honest, but yes, it was so much contrived drama with zero payout. There came a time when all I wanted was for Max and Logan to get off the screen so I could spend time with Alec and Joshua and well, anyone who wasn't Max and Logan.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Absolutely. It is one of those stereptypes that Teen Wolf gleefully broke and made the story richer for it. I especially like how all the parents know about the supernatural now so that they can use their specialty areas to help. It is indeed rare to see teens and their parents working together as a team and it makes the show for me.

    ReplyDelete
  115. For me it is a cheap emotional ploy to keep from having to think outside the box for development. It's jsut getting old. I do agree that getting to know the character before killing them off would be at least more powerful. I still can't believe Murder in the First killed off the guy's wife in the first episode. We don't know either character well enough by that time to really even care beyond what we would for a complete stranger. All it did was make me think the guy was a complete douche for working the job while his wife was dying. Haven't watched another episode since.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Me too and I was disappointed when TNT decided to cancel it. Personally I think with some good marketing they could have gotten back some of the fans who had left previously. That trio was always the most popular with fans.

    ReplyDelete
  117. That amount of exclamation marks and capitalized letters are always going to look like yelling at people on the internet. Most people find it obnoxious. I understand that you are frustrated, but there is a time and place for everything. SpoilerTV is not it and especially a thread that is not specific to TVD. One great side effect of these contests is that it encourages people to try out new shows, but only if their fans go about selling their shows in a respectful manner. Coming across as rude actually hurts the chances that people will respect what you have to say or the show you are promoting. It is far more productive to play nice and think about how you phrase things before you post here.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I don't think Tyrion will make it into the quarter finals, but I do agree he will go up to that point. It would be cool to see him in the semifinals and defy all expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Do you have a Google+ or Twitter account? I always post the roundtable time on those.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I think Cristina leaving will help her in this contest because people are already nostalgic for her. There's something to be said for a character people still love a decade later.

    ReplyDelete
  121. That's a pretty good testimony for the actor in what you saw on TV was even better than what you were thinking in the books.

    ReplyDelete
  122. As a staunch antishipper who used to ship sometimes, I 100% agree. It's just gone way too far overboard. If things calmed down, I probably wouldn't be an anti-shipper anymore. I'll also take your OTP and endgame and add mashed up shipper names, which drive me nuts. Thanks so much tabloids for the utterly annoying Bennifer that started it all. At this point characters that remain friends are so rare, they are a precious jewel for me. And I swear if Holmes and Watson ever get together on Elementary I will drop that show in a snap. That's one of its best qualities.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I keep hearing about the Walter-Jesse relationship and it is making me think that I may actually want to watch Breaking Bad some day. Previously I didn't because I hate the antihero thing. While it is not in my top tier, I will say I become more intrigued by Breaking Bad every contest.

I'll take snarky over emoangsty any day so I understand the issues people seem to be having with Damon right now. Hopefully they will rejuvenate his character this season so people are more excited by him again.

    ReplyDelete
  124. 1. No vote.
    2. Cristina Yang by default.
    3. Walter White - I didn't like the direction Olivia's character was taken in Season 3 but that doesn't really matter because Olivia on her best day still isn't as awesome as Walter.
    4. Damon Salvatore by default.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Me too. I've always hated having to go to classes at 8am, even 9am.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I love Jesse and Walter together. But it´s not the kind of relationship where they always have eachothers back. It is very complicated.

I don´t think I´ll like Damon as much as before. The show got really bad after Klaus left (I know, a lot of people hated him, but for me he took Damons place as the wildcard). I might drop it all together, as it is at the very botton of my "to watch list". I have too many shows to watch anyway, so it is doing me a favour. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  127. I keep intending to mention how much I love the word "emoangsty"

    ReplyDelete
  128. The "Who Shot JR?" question was made my freshman year of college. Set up my 20 inch TV in the common room so we could a watch.....and the bloody TV died!

Speaking of annoying brats...the trailers for the 'Finding Carter" are not wooing me to watch. But that could be because I'm an old fart.

    ReplyDelete
  129. :-) There is, I think, a simple way to handle it that doesn't require contrived situations to keep a couple apart. If the showrunner doesn't intend to put two people together as a couple. Simply don't. Don't tease the fans who start screaming for them to be a couple. You don't need to give reasons they *can't* be together. (That usually makes the fans sure they (the show runners) have come around and are going to eventually make them a couple.) Just don't do it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Well said. Absolutely agree!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Man, that sucks! I remember one of my favorite times ever was when we marathoned different movie series in the commons overnight and half the dorm crammed in with their sleeping bags. So much fun! Star Wars was the best. Planet of the Apes was an eternity.

I watched the first 2 episodes and there is something appealing about the concept, but it is what I consider an ABC Family show. If the mom and daughter could stop yelling at each other for more than 2 minutes, I probably would have watched the third episode. Instead it goes on my marathon later pile. And yes, I am too old for that nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thanks! It's one of the few words that I've made up that I still love years later. There's something about it that perfectly captures all I hate in overwrought drama and contrived issues.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I've only watched the first couple of episodes in season 2 of Scandal but I've been hearing a lot of complaints about season 3. Is it still worth watching?

    ReplyDelete
  134. It abandoned the cases of the week and completely went off the rails with the shocks and twists. It was just insane but not necessarily better. They need to tone it down next season. I still enjoyed it though but at times it was just overwhelming with much they were throwing at the audience in one episode.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Thanks. I'll have to think more on continuing it then.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Yeah it was a very sweet scene, I always enjoy their scenes together.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Sorry i missed this one i would of voted with Tyrion, Yang. But now i;m glad because i like Nathan from Haven and Lorne from Fargo. But Sheeh,so many good actors its just to hard to decide!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I like that so many shows are represented here but it does make voting hard sometimes. Even nominating took some concerted effort.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Hey, how's the posting going? Were you able to fix what was wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  140. The one in the competition was Disqus glitching like you said, it was that one time only and it didn't happen again i guess they fixed whatever was wrong. The other ones were removed because they were about a show in another show's section.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Hmm, that's different. Conversation a lot of times naturally leads to other shows for me. Glad everything is fixed though.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I didn't know what was the problem with that either but that's the answer I got when I asked, maybe because they were a lot of comments I don't know, I'm not going to make a big deal about it. Thank you so much for caring and trying to help me.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Yeah that was a great scene!! Especially the PJ jab. So cute. I wonder if brothers are really that great...or is it just TV =p

    ReplyDelete
  144. Haha, that's me and Graceland these days :( I haven't been able to watch TV all month!! I need to try out all the news shows!

    ReplyDelete
  145. There have been a ton of new shows every week this summer. I'm looking forward to the week when nothing new debuts. It's been crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Wouldn't want to miss hearing your opinions. I think this switchover to a stricter spam filter has made their job harder and probably a bit overwhelming too.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Sorry I'm missing a lot of these votes and the convos Dahne, hopefully I'll be about more in a week or two!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Yeah we wouldn't want to deprive the world from my very insightful and brilliant comments lol. But seriously thank you for your kindness, and I figured as much so it's cool.

    ReplyDelete
  149. "because you're irreplaceable, Felicity" that was cute too.
I have no idea but based on the stories my friends who have brothers tell me reality is not as cute and great lol

    ReplyDelete
  150. We love having you whenever you can make it. I am sorry that I won't get many quotes in today. I have been spending more time on this and cleaning the basement than watching shows unfortunately. Going to post some right now,

    ReplyDelete
  151. No worries, to be honest I haven't watched any shows for about 3-4 weeks now...well I have seen some, but they have all been documentaries or trash tv rather than anything the site covers, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I added some honorable mentions just in case you need to pad the post. No worries at all if you don't. I am not sure how I got behind on summer TV of all things, summer TV. Urgh!

    ReplyDelete
  153. Haha yes. And I'm still a student so I manage. Not sure what people with jobs do haha

    ReplyDelete
  154. Haha. Yeah, probably the first 20 years or so are hell, but then things are better...hopefully.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Another friends like brothers would be Reese and Finch on POI!

    ReplyDelete
  156. Tyrion is such an excellent character! Witty, snarky, and sympathetic. And Peter Dinklage is really a superlative actor. I hope he goes far in this also!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Great example. I think that is the reason why I instantly liked PoI.
