The Comeback is coming back for a six-episode event series ! Production starts in three weeks on May 19.
The cult HBO mockumentary series starring Lisa Kudrow in a satire of the television business (especially reality TV and the world of sitcoms) is returning with new episodes after almost a 9-year 'hiatus'.
The original 13-episode run aired from June 5, 2005 to September 4, 2005, and low ratings caused a swift cancellation (the show stood on its own though, it wasn't a frustrating ending in any way, not that it matters now).
The Comeback stars Lisa Kudrow (Web Therapy) as Valerie Cherish, the fading star of a hit sitcom in the 90s having a look at the difficulties in trying to come back into the business. Kudrow did that show a year after her decade-long role as Phoebe Buffay on Friends. Malin Akerman (Trophy Wife) & Kellan Lutz (Generation Kill) are returning, too, with creator Michael Patrick King and writers Dan Bucantisky & Amy B. Harris also on board.
These 6 new episodes will air later in the year or in early 2015.
HBO really should air reruns of the first 13 episodes very soon, say on Sundays at 11:30 after Last Week with John Oliver - btw, Veep (airing at 10:30) could be seen as an heir of The Comeback - this show was brilliant and truly ahead of its time. The concept definitely lends itself to a revival, a "where are they now" type of thing with the reality TV crew checking in to see how Valerie is doing almost 10 years later. Do you have another idea?
Do you know this amazing little comedy? If you don't, what is your excuse for not having watched it yet?
