Trending Down - Philip Seymour Hoffman to star in Showtime comedy

Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) will star in Trending Down. Kathryn Hahn (Parks & Recreation) will be the comedy series' female lead.

Trending Down is described as a blistering attack on our youth-obsessed culture and a darkly comic examination of what it means to matter. Or matter not.

Philip Seymour Hoffman will play the lead role as Thom Payne, a man facing his own obsolescence after his advertising agency is taken over. Hahn will play Lee Payne, his wife.

Acclaimed author and This American Life contributor Shalom Auslander created the comedy and will write and executive produce alongside Hoffman, Emily Ziff, Ken Kwapis and Alexandra Beattie.

Trending Down marks the third pilot pickup at Showtime this year. It is the first comedy, joining dramas The Vatican and The Affair. The project joins the previously announced Penny Dreadful series at the network, which recently renewed freshman drama Ray Donovan and will launch rookie drama Masters of Sex on September 29.

If it gets picked up to series, this would be Hoffman's first regular TV gig. He received an Emmy nomination for his supporting role in the HBO movie Empire Falls.

Throughout his career on the big screen, Hoffman has had many supporting roles and a few starring roles in critically hailed projects such as Scent of a Woman, The Big Lebowski, Happiness, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Almost Famous, State and Main, Love Liza, 25th Hour, Owning Mahowny, Cold Mountain, Capote, The Savages, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Charlie Wilson's War, Synecdoche New York, Doubt, Mary & Max, The Boat That Rocked, The Ides of March, Moneyball, A Late Quartet and most of Paul Thomas Anderson's films (Sydney, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, The Master). The only "commercial" films Hoffman has ever been in are Red Dragon, Mission: Impossible III and the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

He's one of the greatest living actors is what I'm saying, having him is a huge get for Showtime, don't you think ?
