The Good Doctor - Episodes 6.16 - 6.17 - Review: Necessary Changes that are Worth it

After two episodes of our favorite show, it's time to take in everything that happened in The Good Doctor 6x16 “The Good Lawyer” and The Good Doctor 6x17 "Second Chances and Past Regrets." One is a pilot episode of another series and the other gives us quality scenes between Jared and Shaun and makes us proud of how far they've come. Ready?

Here we go!

“The Good Lawyer” episode was, as you all know, the pilot episode of The Good Doctor spinoff, so there wasn't much storyline of the characters we know beyond the central thread that connected the two series.

I never liked spin-off pilots that use the mother series to get ahead because I think they waste time from the original series' stories to introduce us to a story and characters that we don't know and are not very interested in because we don't have a connection to them.

With that being said, it was good to see the contrast between Joni and Shaun. It's like seeing the path that Joni will take on her own show. Once, Shaun was like Joni: someone brilliant in their profession but with hardly anyone who believed in them. But, in the end, even those who least believed in them are the first to realize how they underestimated them due to prejudice. And they get to learn from them.

In the "Second Chances and Past Regrets" episode, Jared and Shaun must learn to work together again...but with a twist. Now they are not at the same level. Shaun is Jared's boss and that brings new learning for both of them.

Jared must learn that he accepted a position at the hospital as a first-year resident, which entails not thinking he's smarter than his bosses and following the rules they set. In short, not go it alone and respect the authority of those who is above him, without expecting favorable treatment because there is a friendship between the two.

As for Shaun, he has to learn to set limits, but also to listen to his residents when they have a good idea, and, above all, he has to learn that just because something is difficult doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Jared has to adjust and yes, Shaun has to make a few things clear to him but he has to give Jared a chance.

When Shaun entered the hospital as a resident, the adjustment was not easy, neither for him nor for his colleagues. However, Glassy fought to be given a chance, and everyone was glad they did.

The situation with Jared is similar. Friendship complicates everything, but that doesn't mean the hospital isn't Jared's place.

So we love that the two sorted it out and set some clear boundaries, as clear as possible. We are proud of them!

Jared and Shaun aren't the only ones having trouble in "Second Chances and Past Regrets." Asher and his boyfriend had a major disagreement. And I understand both of them here. Asher has the right to be angry that his boyfriend kept something like that from him. However, I also understand the fear that led him to do that.

The kid of the issue is that this fight brings to the surface some underlying issues. And at this point, I do think Asher was pretty unfair. The point is that both need to try a little harder to open up and trust that the other will still be there after that.

The two have to fight so that what they have doesn’t collapse due to the fear of knowing that they are vulnerable and exposed. And we're glad they did.

This is where our The Good Doctor review ends. We will be back on April 3 with a new review.
