Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led this second Wednesday of the new television season and will continue to do so as long as “Empire” is running. “Empire” stood well above the competition, with a 9.0 rating/14 share in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, the 10.4/17 in the overnights for the sophomore season premiere of “Empire” one week earlier resulted in to 22.5 million viewers and a record 8.7 rating/27 share in adult 18-49, based on the Live + 3 Day data.
New lead-in drama “Rosewood” experienced the normal week two erosion, with a 4.8/ 8 in households down by 19 percent from the 5.9/10 one week earlier. Last week that resulted in an initial tune-in of 7.54 million viewers and a 2.4/ 9 in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. And, like the first episode of “Rosewood,” there was noticeable overnight growth in the second half-hour (16 percent last night: 4.4/ 7 to 5.1/ 8). You can refer to that as pre tune-in for “Empire.”
In series-premiere news, CBS medical drama “Code Black” was sampled at a dominant 5.6/10 in the household overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, retention for “Code Black” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Criminal Minds” (6.3/10) was solid at 89 percent. But, comparably, the “Code Black” opener was seven percent below the year-ago series-premiere of former time period occupant “Stalker” (6.0/10 on 10/01/14), which lasted only one season. The bottom line: The sampling for “Code Black” was adequate (but not significant).
Earlier in the evening on CBS was always reliable “Survivor” at a 5.4/ 9 (#2) from 8-9 p.m., which was equal to the 90-minute season-opener one week earlier. And that resulted in 9.70 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/9 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. In other words, veteran “Survivor” is showing no signs of slowing down.
Aforementioned “Criminal Minds” opened this 11th season at a 6.2/10 (#2) from 9-10 p.m., which was 17 percent below the 7.5/12 opener one year earlier.
In season-premiere news, “Chicago PD” returned for season three on NBC with a 4.2/ 7 in the overnights at 10 p.m. (#2), which was a minor improvement from its “Law & Order: SVU” lead-in (#4: 4.1/ 7 at 9 p.m.). Given that “SVU grew last week by 71 percent in adults 18-49 in five days (after time-shifting and alternative platform viewing was factored in), compatible “Chicago PD” could ultimately follow the same path.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was “The Mysteries of Laura” at a 5.0/ 8 in households from 8-9 p.m., which was four percent above the 4.8/ 8 one week earlier. Given how competitive the hour is, there should be room for an older-skewing vehicle like “The Mysteries of Laura.”
Elsewhere, ABC experienced minor seven percent overnight slippage for the night from one week earlier with its line-up of sitcoms “The Middle” (#1t: 5.4/ 9), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.7/ 8). “Modern Family” (#3: 5.9/ 9) and “black-ish” (#4: 4.1/ 7), and perennially sluggish drama “Nashville” (#3: 3.4/ 6 at 10 p.m.). And The CW capped off the night with part two of “The iHeartRadio Music Festival” at a mere 0.7/ 1 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.
