Game of Thrones - Season 6 - Portions to be Filmed in Spain

3 Jun 2015

HBO said today that portions of the next season of its signature drama Game Of Thrones will film in Spain. The premium cabler said the series based on George R.R. Martin’s book series will shoot in multiple locations including the cities of Girona and Peñiscola. Details will be unveiled closer to the production dates later this year. Peter Weller Soler of Fresco Film Services will handle production services in Spain.

The series, which wraps its current season on HBO this month, will begin production on Season 6 in late July. Belfast is standing in for the show’s continent of Westeros, which summers and winters can last years and treachery lurks all around.

  1. I'm assuming most likely more Dorne scenes and if so, I assume Jamie decides to stay in Dorne instead of returning to King's Landing.

Dorne, I've found personally to be the least exciting part of Season 5 so I hope that changes next season. Also fix the fighting too, wasn't as impressive as the show usually is and for having the name Sand Snakes, they aren't really scary to me, though Tyene Sand is quite pretty ;)

  2. They may film at the locations they used for Dorne and Daznak's pit in Meereen (which we will see in one of the next couple episodes) again, but last month WOTW reported they were scouting locations in Girona which is in Northeastern Spain and is much cooler climate wise.

A few locations of interest rumored were the Girona Cathedral and the Call known for its old and narrow streets.

It looks to me like that cathedral would make an awesome Citadel in Oldtown!
Maybe Sam does travel to Oldtown or maybe the newly announced "pirate" will attack Oldtown like in the books?

Some awesome pics of the Cathedral and the Call.

  3. I always enjoy your take on the BTS stuff :) I like Sam going to Oldtown, he'd make an excellent Maester.

Thank you for sharing, the Girona Cathedral is heavenly ;) I loved the locations for this show, it's always nice to see where they'll go next.

  4. Thanks!

I love the locations too. They are just so, so beautiful.... Even the ones that get enhanced with CGI elements!

I think people expected Randyll Tarly to be cast (assuming that is the "Father" role that was leaked), but the casting of the entire Tarly family surprised a lot of people. Some people expected Euron in Season 6... I was not necessarily one of them I admit.

I'm so intrigued by the upcoming production season! No one knows for sure what elements will make the series or for that matter what is coming up in the future books!

I hoped for Oldtown so I'm ecstatic, but I also want Wyman Manderly on the series! Wait and see I guess...

  5. Your welcome :) Your insight is always wonderful to read.

Agreed, CGI just makes it shine brighter.

I read peoples guess on Euron too and Victorian too.

Definitely. Also Comic Con and their announcements of some of the major new casting, I'm excited to see who might join the show :)

Oldtown, please Lord of Light XD!

So there remains only one month until Kit Harington will be back and -suprprise surprise- everybody knows that Jon Targaryen is still alive.

  7. So I guess Dorne isn't going anywhere... and Maybe they might use it as another free city, bearing where Danny or Arya end up by the end of the season.

  8. I'm assuming this is Dany's journey, whatever that journey is.

  9. Well I read a very interesting spoilery theory about the Dorne plot which suggests a major change from the books and would really make the entire storyline important. I doubt its true because Reddit does like to go crazy for theories but if anyone is interested you can read it here. It includes big hints about a scene in ep 9 or 10.

  10. I don't watch the show but my friends do. Jsut wondering: Haven't GOT always been shooting scenes in Spain right from the start?

  11. Hmm, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they have. As far as I know, they've only filmed in Croatia as well as Ireland and Iceland for the northern scenes.

  12. As noted below by 16pscyhe, they filmed scenes in Spain for the first time last year. They filmed in Seville at the Real Alcázar and in Osuna at the Bullring.

Before that though they have filmed in other countries since the pilot.
    - Morocco (Pilot)
    - Croatia (Season 2 - 5)
    - Iceland (Season 2-4)
    - Malta (Season 1 - 3)
    - Spain (Season 5)
    - California (Bart the Bear scene)
    - Scotland (Winterfell in the Pilot)
    - Home base in Northern Ireland

Those production notes are just from memory so I may be off a little.

  13. Peñiscola, Spain is another city where they will film Season 6 according to Wotw.
    A few possible locations.

  14. Who knows what will feature next season...
Maybe Oldtown exterior framing shots or even Casterly Rock!
