Game of Thrones - Season 5 Finale - Post Mortem's *Updated*

Update: 19.23 Gwendoline Christie on her finale encounter & Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on Jamie's loss.

Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau—who notes he doesn’t have any idea what’s to come next season—speculated that Jaime is going to have a pretty tough time explaining this one to his beloved sister. “It’s not going to be easy, is it?” the actor mused. “She’s already gone through one hell. It’s like: ‘Do you want the good or the bad news first?’ But after this whole religious thing that’s happened [with the Faith Militant taking power in King’s Landing], the whole political balance has shifted. It’s not clear what’s going to happen.”

The actor also pointed out he’s returning to King’s Landing with Myrcella’s betrothed, Trystane Martell. Coster-Waldau noted that Trystane could find himself in the same situation as Myrcella in Dorne after Prince Oberyn was murdered—except Cersei is far less likely to show mercy than Prince Doran.

Entertainment Weekly What was your reaction when you saw this in the script?

Gwendoline Christie [Christie makes screeching sound that’s impossible to replicate by text] I didn’t think it could get any better than last season. And then I got to the end and I’m like, “What happens next? What could possibly happen?” This season I had a story line I genuinely could never have imagined.

Entertainment Weekly What was she thinking when she abandons her watch for Sansa?

Gwendoline Christie Brienne is depressed about the situation she’s in. She hasn’t been able to achieve what she’s wanted. Arya slipped through her fingers and she just went through the fight of her life. The notion of the oath comes up again and again and she remains resolute. A lot of her personal needs remain unacknowledged. She puts all of her life’s focus on the greater good. What occurs is something very interesting. There’s an exploration of this character as a person—she’s dedicated to the greater good, not acknowledging her personal wants and needs in favor of something better than her. [Going after Stannis is] the one moment she responds to her emotional world and her feelings. She’s overtaken by something that we haven’t seen before. She chooses not to stand vigilant and to go and seek Stannis. In the script it says, “a darkness comes over her,” in that way it does when you’re hell-bent on something.

Entertainment Weekly: What was your reaction when you learned Jon’s fate?

Kit Harington: Like every season, you read something in the script and go, “Oh f–k.” I kind of knew it was coming. I didn’t read [George R.R. Martin’s novel] A Dance with Dragons. But I read the other books and I had heard this is what happens. So I had an inkling it should be this season. I didn’t realize it would be the final shot of the season and that made it extra special. It’s always kind of nice really when you’re the last thing that happens in that episode. I dunno, I loved it. I loved how they brought Olly in to be the person who kills me. I love how the storyline with Thorne was wrapped up. I think it was really well crafted by [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss]. It felt like the right way for it to happen.

Entertainment Weekly:I was talking to Dan Weiss and he said Jon is really dead. But George R.R. Martin left open the possibility the character might not be dead in the books. And then that cast salary contract story came out last year and it had your name among those receiving raises for season six and an option on a seventh. So let me ask you: Is Jon really dead?

Kit Harington:This is my understanding of it. I had a sit-down with Dan and David, we did the Tony Soprano walk [letting an actor know they’re being whacked]. And they said, “Look, you’re gone, it’s done.” And as far as the salary thing goes, that angered me when that story came out. I don’t know where it came from, but it was inaccurate in many ways. It’s going to put questions into your head and into fans’ heads that things are not what they are. Quite honestly, I have never been told the future of things in this show, but this is the one time I have. They sat me down and said, “This is how it is.” If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it – it’s only in David and Dan and George’s heads. But I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season. So that’s all I can tell you, really.

  1. He is "trolling" for sure. He will be alive next season.

  2. This for a man who plays a character that just fought an army of the living Dead. He was brought out to meet his Uncle. What say's he will not? They throw him over the wall and suddenly next big battle they have a stupid white walker who knows nothing but how to fight. Who knows?

  3. I think he will remain dead all 10 episodes next season and then possibly return the following season.

GRRM already confirmed that Jon survives and finds out about his parents.

They won't throw anyone over the wall. Melisandre will bring him back. Released from his oath by death - and that's what makes him king.

  6. Well it isn't like he can just come out a few hours after the epic cliffhanger and confirm he is alive. That would ruin any suspense for the next year. They have to keep some kind of pretense up even if I'm sure his return will be leaked before next April.

  7. Perhaps unwittingly. He didn't say "Jon is a live and learns his true lineage" but enough noncomittal language exists in previous interviews that it's still kind of a possibility.

    Here's an example:
-ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So why did you kill Jon Snow?
-GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: Oh, you think he’s dead, do you?

    http://www.ew.com/article/2011/07/21/dance-with-dragons-shocking-twist-g

Also - the show may handle things differently than the books do even though they're both still driving toward a similar conclusion.

  9. So he dies in the books as well??? Really?
I really don't know what Mr Martin has against the Starks. Give them happiness.
And this 10 season format isn't really working, way way too short.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Jon Snow is a major POV character and by all accounts there is much of his story left to tell.

Add to that the fact that he has personally defeated a White Walker in combat and knows the urgency of the situation and that he is the only real connection to the people in the South and the Wildlings in the North, this means that Jon is the only one that can unite the people for the struggle that is coming.

The story of Game of Thrones is told through POV characters. Sam has left the Wall and Davos and Melissandre are not major POV characters. Their story has always been tied to that of Stannis. So with Jon gone, there is no major POV character at the Wall which is a significant part of the story. No. Jon isn't dead, and if he is I don't see him staying dead for too long.

I was concerned that Daenerys and Tyrion being together in the same narrative meant that one of them might die because they're both major POV characters and to tell the story you only need one POV in a specific place. But now they're separated again so fingers crossed they both make it.

  12. Nope. No point to troll if he's going to be spotted on set soon anyway. Kit is gone for good.

  13. They are pulling a Revenge on us. IM not falling for it.

  14. The show will have most likely 7 seasons, so what I am asking, is it possible for him to take a break for a year and then come back?

Also, because there are many people who see his death as a common death on a show, this is a fantasy series where magic exists and is very important. He wouldn't even be the first to come back. Not to mention that it doesn't have to be on the same form.

P.S- There are also some interviews in which the author has confirmed he will be coming back at least in the books. Something about Jon wandering close to the darkness and finding about his true origins. It's not recent, given the fact Jon ''died'' in the books a long time ago.

  15. Ahahahah!!!!! You made my day.
Show should stop trying to pull a Revenge I mean... I really wanted Victoria to stay dead.

  16. If Jon is dead then I don't know how this show ends without everyone dying at the hands of the white walkers.

  17. His fate his left more of an unknown in the books.

  18. This is the only time I have ever felt totally convinced that someone was not going to stay dead on the show. Had hopes for LS of course but still doubted they would include her. I feel there's only a 7% chance Jon is staying dead. He shall rise...Jon Targaryen!!

I never liked JS but funny how when I finally can tolerate him he dies... More important to me is where the heck did that dragon take Danaerys!?!?!?

  20. Heed his words : ' I will not come back for next season ' ( not the series) and ' he is dead ' ( obvious) , which does not mean he can not be resurrected by Melisandre . The D & D interview is also strange , only saying that the character is dead . To say it with all the words 'Jon Snow will not return to the series ' it is advisable that all be on the back foot .
Note : Kit was seen yesterday or the day before yesterday in Belfast, and continues with the hair of Jon Snow.

English is not my first language .

  21. Aham. Okay. I just read a funny tweet from Matt Mitovich
"But has Madeleine Stowe confirmed that THRONES character's death? Talk to me then."

So who is dead and who is alive we'll have to wait for some spoilers to raise.

  22. I don't get why people hating on the season. I know some stuff is quiet different from the book but overall I loved this season. Every episode was amazing. The only thing I don't like are only 10 episodes per year. I am glad that it gives them a lot of time to spend on writing but there are so many characters we haven't seen for a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Recently I learned about the theory R+L=J and I was so thrilled because I thought for certain he won't die, he will be the last man standing etc. Few days later they kill him. Wow.

  24. After Revenge Im never trusting a single interview again.

  25. I was just thinking the same xD After those Madeleine Stowe interview, I won't believe anybody about tv series xD

    ReplyDelete
  26. I didn't hate this season, but overall, it was of a lower quality than the ones before. I don't mind changes done to the book, but they were not very well done here.

    1. Sansa was developing into a strong, manipulative woman and they sacrificed her character development and turned her into a damsel in distress who needs to be rescued by a man.

    2. The Dorne storyline was lackluster with a disappointing end.

    3. Compared to her being a badass all over the Riverlands last season, Arya's arc was pretty slow here. They could have included a lot more of her "training".

    4. A lot of interesting and complex plots - like young Griff and the Queenmaker plot - have been adapted out - which makes no sense to me. Its not like they are on a deadline to finish the story. Its the opposite - they should use all the plot they have given that they are still waiting for the rest of the material.

    5. They seem to have forgotten all about Rickon and the Iron Islands. Especially since Jon knows that Stannis needs a Stark and he knows that Bran and Rickon are alive and need some sort of protection, shouldn't he tell him about them?

    6. The characters who were build up as turn out either disappointing or don't turn up at all - Olenna couldn't get her grandkids out of jail, Stannis couldn't even achieve one victory, Doran showed no spark of vengeance like Oberyn, we didn't see Manderley or any other of the northern lords or anyone from the Iron Islands. The two of the biggest badasses were Ramsay and Littlefinger - and that is simply not enough

  28. tbh I thought this season has been the best so far. hah yeah but the most things you are listing, are things you wanted the story to go. In my opinion as long as the story makes sense it is all good. To me it all made sense even when stuff happened I did not like but that is Game of Thrones for you. Both bad and good people have equally chances to win or loose and that is what I like about GoT. I do agree tho that they should've taken their time with the stories. 10 episodes per year is not enough especially if you have so many different plots. and because of this they are rushing through the story otherwise this season could have been produced in 2020 after an amazing build up. oh well we can't really change anything hah :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. A lot of story didn't make sense - that's the problem. The whole Dorne stuff didn't make sense. Sansa's character regression didn't make sense. Stannis' failure as a military commander didn't make sense. The omission of significant and interesting storylines didn't make sense. And ignoring entire regions of Westeros as if nothing significant is happening there doesn't make sense (do we really think that Balon and Asha are jsut sitting in Pyke waiting for further instructions? Balon declared himself king - what happened to that? Is he still independent? Does he still pay taxes? Did he give up his crown? Was his rebellion crushed? Is he still fighting?).

Ok that is what I thought, the first guy looked Dothraki but then it turned into a mass of people and I couldn't tell... Thanks

  31. I was thinking the same thing. After what Revenge did I'm never trusting what these interviews say.

  32. Wow I like that his death would release him from his oath and he could become king. Jon is my favorite and I'm in mourning. I'm clinging to hope right now

  33. When they say jon snow is dead i think they are to play it smart to be honest. Yes jon snow man that we have known since season 1 is dead for sure. That does not mean to say he wont be resuurected in some shape or form, he just wont be the same anyomore. Maybe they r replacing lady stoneheart with jon instead, maybe he warged into ghost before death or heck maybe he will be become a white walker. Should of burned the body lol. Guess we will just have to wait and see but im almost certain kit harrington will still have a part to play next season

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. More or less agree with you there. Me and you discussed sanda at length before lol. I dont like that they made her seem weak again but i did still enjoy her arc and look forward to see what they do with her and theon next season.

    2. Totally agree there nothing to enjoy in dorne at all. Except maybe bronn

    3. Agree arya had a very slow season but her bloody brutal vegeance in the finale just about made up for it for me. Doesnt get anymore bad ass than that.

    4. Im also dissappointed we didnt get the young griff story though last i heard d and d had a seven season plan for the show which only gives them 20 more episodes to wrap everything up. If thats accurate then they are on a very tight schedule indeed and i could understand the omission

    5. I dont believe they have forgotten about rickon and the iron islands just holding it back for next season same as bran. Going by the recent casting calls it certainly seems likely the iron islands will play a part next season. Perhaps theon will return there, granted he and sansa sucessfully escape that is.

    6. I dont know about anyone else but after stannis had his own daughter burnt alive to appease some god and win a battle, i didnt want to see him anything. He got exactly what he deserved. Any commander who relys on magic and dumb luck to win battles doesnt deserve to win said battles lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. 4. Their "tight" schedule is one of their own making and can just as easily be unmade. Especially since it doesn't make any sense. The show is doing very well and is at no risk of overstaying its welcome. And since they have a lot of material still available, they need not worry about the plot getting stale and repetitive. Compromising the storyline for no foreseeable gain just to satisfy an arbitrary time limit they set for themselves doesn't seem sensible.

    5. But they did omit them in favor of slower and tedious storylines and the season suffered for it.

    6. Danaerys relied on magic and dumb luck to hatch the dragons and she has been winning battles on basis of that ever since. Would you say that she doesn't deserve to either?

    ReplyDelete
  36. 4. Agreed its surely not smart to limit themselves but at the end of the day i imagine its probably up to hbo if the show continues beyond season 7 or not not the writers. Untill they r told otherwise they have no choice but to stick to their intial plan.

    5. Yeah i would rather have seen the iron islands instead of dorne but at the same time i guess dorne storyline still had to be told and for me it made sense to go their first given the death of oberyn last season. If they had included iron islands this year as well then they would of had the very difficult task of juggling the north, kings landing, mereen, bravoos, dorne and iron islands all in the same season. Would have been a convoluted mess

    6. I dont defend dany anymore than i defend stannis, though dragons and an army of unsullied trump mellisandre and her blood magic in my book. Dany is also a very poor leader andd while she may have got lucky in the past she pretty much spent this entire season on the losing side. First with selmy being killed and culminating in her being forced to flee meereen. She will be in a difficult and precarious situation next season, as she rightfully should be for acting so high and mighty. Im hoping the dothraki teach her a leason in humility

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Untill they r told otherwise they have no choice but to stick to their intial plan."

Or they could ask HBO about it. Given the show's current ratings, I think HBO's response would be to give them a carte blache.

"If they had included iron islands this year as well then they would of
had the very difficult task of juggling the north, kings landing,
mereen, bravoos, dorne and iron islands all in the same season. Would
    have been a convoluted mess"

They were juggling all of that except for the Iron Islands already - would one more area really have made a difference? And since they were doing Dorne already, we could've gotten the intelligently made Queenmaker plot instead of the nonsensical revenge plot.

"Im hoping the dothraki teach her a leason in humility"

That sounds ominous - especially given the fate of female characters of late.

  38. Number of seasons all comes down to money i suppose. Though i cant ever remember an hbo show lasting more than 6 or 7 seasons no matter how successful it was. Im sure discussions are ongoing. If martin ever releases book 6 that may change things if they choose to include material from it.

Maybe iron islands would have made a difference this season maybe it wouldnt have. All i know, people complain enough as it is that there is too many characters and locations to keep track off in game of thrones. Small attention spans these days. Maybe its omission was a budget issue given it would have meant more actors (balon, asha, euron) and more locations to shoot.

Dont get me wrong i do like dany lol. I kinda want to see her sit on the iron throne when all is said and done, but she has some hard lessons to learn first about being a ruler. I dont want to see her win with dragons alone i want her to earn it if you know what i mean

    ReplyDelete
  39. Didn't Entourage last 8 seasons?

Anyway, the whole point of this discussion is why I consider this season to be of an inferior quality as a whole compared to previous ones. Season 4 changed things from the books as well - we had Arya and Hound adventures, Brienne being on the right path and Locke going after Bran and co. - none of it in the books and all of it done well. The changes this season did not work as well because either nothing happened or because of poor characterizations.
