Chicago Med - Colin Donnell Joins Cast as Series Regular

29 May 2015

Colin Donnell (Arrow, The Affair) has been added to the cast of NBC’s new drama series Chicago Med as a new regular. Because the latest offshoot in Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise started off as a planted spinoff episode of Chicago Fire, the cast was not fully formed and is now expanding. Since work on the show’s 13-episode order is just beginning, the character Donnell will be playing is still being fleshed out. He is expected to be a doctor, possibly in pediatrics.

Donnell had been on NBC and Wolf’s radar for awhile. Wolf had previously liked him for a role on the first Chicago Fire spinoff, Chicago PD. This past season, NBC cast him in a guest starring role on freshman drama Mysteries of Laura and as a lead in drama pilot Love Is a Four Letter Word.

  1. Going by his luck,he'll probably die in the finale by a terrorist attack/bombing on the hospital!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Or crushed by a debris from a crack inside the hospital wiong that was left unchecked from the first attempted Med backdoor pilot 2 seasons ago. :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. LOL!Totally possible.Apparently everyone will see it coming but the writers will pretend otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Good.for him. I loved Tommy and Colin is a good actor.

    Don't kill him off show!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wait, what? Really? Yay. I'll finally have him on my TV again.
But that also means we're never getting Tommy back :(

    ReplyDelete
  6. Were you expecting Tom being resurrected by LP?You were joking, right?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was talking about flashbacks. He won't be free to guest star.
Seriously how many times have I said how annoyed I am by that LP?

    ReplyDelete
  8. You forget,i hardly visit Arrow threads.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Right. I am VERY anti resurrection on Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've dropped Arrow from my watchlist next season. It's way too Olicity centric for my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That's too bad. I don't think you should drop a show because of one single story. TVD was way too Delena centric and I didn't stop watching it. My enthusiasm for it declined a lot but I still enjoy other stories/characters.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's the thing,I don't care for any character except Diggle right now.I liked Felicity a lot earlier season but the writers destroyed her character completely right now.You know, you have to drop a show when you hate the central character the most.I can't stand Oliver any more.Same reason,i'm dropping TO-Can't stand Klaus.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You're right, you shouldn't watch a show if you hate the titular character and only care about one character. Next season is going to be big for Dig though, so maybe you should give it an episode or two.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm not sure if I'll be watching this show, they definitely need to add more to the cast and this news is encouraging. It'll be great to see Colin in a new show. Still miss Tommy on Arrow.

  15. Love the pit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't watch this, but I saw the headline. Good for Colin! Happy for you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm confused. Are you telling me to love it or that you love it? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have read so much hate for Ollie lately but I get it. I just think that he is suppose to be messed a bit in the head for now. He's just lost he hasn't found the balance yet but he will. I think the upcoming season is going to be about him finding his true self which is hero n man. He thinks it's one or the other. He needs to realize he can be both because he is both Oliver Queen n the hero that saves Star (Starling) City

    ReplyDelete
  19. Andy Diggle justice! Seriously though it'll be cool. But and I hate to do this, the comic book nerd in me will never be as happy with Arrow compared to the Flash. Especially since Flash is doing Earth 2 and the multiverse. Which means: Jay Garrick mother f*ckers!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I guess we won't be seeing him back on Broadway for a while. Too bad, he was great in Anything Goes.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh I love it. But hey if you hate it hate it. Though besides Sara no one will actually be rezed with it. Thea herself wasn't actually dead.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Don't forget. Malcolm Merlyn seemed pretty dead at the end of season one and was miraculously resurrected.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This casting just added to Chicago Med's already amazing cast. Dick Wolf really outdid himself on this project.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The entire CW caters heavily to the shippers. That may not appeal to the ComicCon hardliners, but ratings for the network's DC Comics programs would decline significantly without those hookups.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Colin said he'd be open to do guest spots and hey, they tangled around Daniel Gillies schedule of doing two shows as a regular for two years, so Arrow will surely find a way to bring Tommy back for a flashback or two :)

    I miss Tommy :(

Isn't it odd that we still haven't seen Malcolm deal with Tommy being dead?

    ReplyDelete
  26. isn't he a regular on "The Affair" too?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nah, most people called that before he returned. "No body, no crime"

    ReplyDelete
  28. Have you seen them?
    Darn, I wish I would have :O

    ReplyDelete
  29. He's been dead for over a year. He'd be a Zombie.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah he seems to be there. Or at least for the first time in eight years embracing being Oliver Queen whoever that is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I saw both of them. Colin Donnell has great on stage chemistry with Sutton Foster who headlined both plays.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah but it's a superhero show n every single hero has to go through this stage to become the man n hero that r meant to be. It's just tiring to watch at times I'm sure Ollie will get there, they always do.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well he will by four. He's already a hero. Now he just needs to get the Oliver part down. But fair point.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have no idea who Jay Gerrick is.I heard someone say the helmet that came through the time wormhole in the finale of Flash was his.Can you please educate me about his character?Being a non-comic fan is really hard now-a-days!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great news! Donnell was simply outstanding on Arrow - can't wait to see him here!

    ReplyDelete
  36. His character was revealed to be the dead one, who knocked up the male leads minor daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jay Garrick is the original Flash aka the first fastest man alive. Huge easter egg with that helmet.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now I'm really glad I checked that Chicago Med box while applying for the writers position. ^_^
Colin is a lovely guy, really glad he gets more screen time all around.

    ReplyDelete
  39. He's the first Flash. Chemist, and a founding member of the Justice Society and from Earth 2. He's basically a cool old guy. And is from the Golden Age of comics. He gained his powers from a hard water experiment. His probable introduction looks interesting. And it's Jay Garrick. It was his. He has in the comics (specifically Rebirth) helped fight Zoom with Barry, Wally and Bart.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yep, pulling double duty won't be much of an issue if his schedule matches taping days for both shows.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OMG best casting news ever! They better not try and kill him off!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like it! Missed him since Arrow!

    ReplyDelete
  43. But it's not one single story ,it's the entire show . And Joy is right they keep focusing on a couple that's as forced as it gets

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh right, if you're dead for a year you won't come back human?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Take a deep breath Graydon. You won't last till October like this lol
Can you imagine if they revealed in SDCC who will play JG? I better prepare the bucket.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You have no idea how relieved I was that Thea wasn't dead but they just had to resurrect Sara. How is any death supposed to mean anything after that? Ugh

    ReplyDelete
  47. I forgot it was a mid-season show and they won't be filming at the same time.
I miss Tommy so much :(
I know a lot of people think Malcolm resurrected Tommy but I'm not a fan of that theory. He mentioned that Tommy is dead several times and that Thea is the only child he has left and that's why he "loves" her. You want him to break down and cries? Come on it's Malcolm.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah and Laurel and Oliver are the true defenation of a natural romance.
Prepare yourself because they will get even more "forced" as the series progresses.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Laurel and Oliver are at least canon in the comics while they keep on shoving Olicity down our throats just because the 16 year old girls love them . And I don't quite get why every Olicity fan keeps mentioning Lauriver whenever I talk to them about their favorite couple . Yeah I do ship Lauriver but I'm not one of those fans who hates a show just because my OTP isn't together . I really love Arrow but the S3 finale really upset me because I realized that the show was willing to sacrifice character development for people who have been there since the beggining (Laurel,Thea,Diggle ,Malcom ) and new characters (like Nyssa) for more Olicity scenes just to please the shippers . And that's what really pissed me off because Arrow is not a rom com it's a superhero show

    ReplyDelete
  50. The new Doug Ross then? :P

Anyhow, good for him. Glad he's been getting steady work.

    ReplyDelete
  51. the dead one? I don't watch this show so that all sounds rather confusing to me :P

I really want him to shoot some flashback scenes with Stephen, Willa and Barrowman. I loved the brotherly chemistry he had with Oliver/Thea and that fatherly antagonism with Merlyn

    ReplyDelete
  52. The show flashes forward and backward the whole time, it's rather confusing at times. Cause the times jumps are minimal so U really don't notice any difference besides the female leads hair.
The present time is about a murder case and in the last ep it was revealed it's Colin's character, while in the past he worked with his brothers on a ranch and slept with the male leads daughter. Also the tricky thing is that Colin's sister in law is the female lead, who is having an affair with the male lead. Rather telenovela alike, but the way they shot and interfere the past and present story is really good.

Yeah Tommy added a new dimension to all those messed up relations. Would be nice to get a flashback to when Malcolm first come back from his league training.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dear God not the comic thing again. You are aware that they are canonically divorced in the comics, right?

"they keep on shoving Olicity down our throats just because the 16 year old girls love them" I'm not going to dignify that remark with a response.

I don't speak for others but I brought up Lauriver because you were talking about Olicity as a romantic pairing for the main character and I needed to use an example. I could use Saliver if you prefer?

You're right it's not a romcom it's a show about a hero's journey and the hero is in love and chose to be with the woman he loves *gasps* how unheard of!

What exactly was the scene they did that was only for "teenage" fangirls? When Felicity convinced him to fight to live and not sacrifice himself as usual? When she saved him from drowning? When he decided to retire to be with the woman he loves? Can you honestly tell me that you would have been upset if he chose to hang up the hood and be with Laurel? Or the last scene when the hero of the show who spent 8 years wallowing in self loathing finally said that he is happy? All of that was throwing away character development how exactly?

And for the record Felicity was there from the start too. She first appeared in episode 3 of season 1. She was the second person Oliver CHOSE to reveal his identity to.

  54. Off Topic:
( in a 6 degrees of separation kind of way )

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_(comics)

Just for fun if Barry Allen ends up interact with other versions of The Flash due to the wormhole/singularity opening the door to other dimensions/universes who would you like to see playing Jay Garrick, Wally West, and Bart Allen next season ?

( also - Jesse Chambers, John Fox, Sela Allen, Blaine Allen, Jace Allen,Kryiad, and Bizarro Flash )

    Me:

Jay Garrick: Mark Valley, Tahmoh Penikett, David Anders, or Harrison Ford.

Wally West: Matt Barr, Chris Wood, Jason Dohring, or Michael Trevino

Bart Allen: Sterling Beaumon, Dylan Minnette, or Robbie Kay

    ReplyDelete
  55. If they reveal Wally or Bart I won't make it for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Because the pit isn't some freebie thing. It doesn't always work. Only works in a certain period, certain things and only Ra's al Ghul can authorize it's use. People need to understand that the pit isn't going to b brought up or used after Sara for every death (or for any). Death will still have meaning. Moira won't be coming back, Tommy isn't. This isn't Dragon Ball. And Oliver sure as shit isn't going to beg Ra's al Ghul for it's usage. The pit isn't going to be used especially once the effects are shown to Thea. There's a reason Ra's (New guy) was against using it on Thea the first time. Bodies aren't perfectly restored. It can alter your personality (like with Jason Todd). Death will always have meaning, and assuming the worst because it exists isn't really the best position. Time travel, exists but Barry's learned the dangers of using it to save people. The consequences will be felt with the pit, but more importantly like time travel the pit isn't easy to access, doesn't always work and is an unnatural violation of nature.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That's the thing, I really need them to show how horrible the side effects of the pit are to prevent any future use of it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Now I'm torn. I want Bart Allen to be on the show but I don't want to lose you to a nerd coma lol

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ah that's sweet of you. I wanted want to lose you to one either. Well if I can control my joy, nerdgasms and mentally prepare for it I should be fine. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well throw Tommy into it. He'll be Zombie. Better yet chuck some random criminal in there he'll be dead. Beyond mental effects and personality change (which vary) isn't that bad provided it fully works and the body is freshly dead.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hahahaha well then we shall prepare you mentally every day. Make you read fanfic and look at photoshopped images of Barry and Bart or Wally racing lol

    ReplyDelete
  62. NO don't even joke about Zombie Tommy. I don't want anything to ruin my memories of him. TOMMMMYYY. I'm doing a summer rewatch of Arrow and I miss him so much :( it's killing me that he never knew Thea was his sister.

What kind of personality changes? It makes you more aggressive? Heartless? Evil? Mentally unstable?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well it's not extremely well documented but repeated use makes you unstable, murderous and crazy. But revival can make you more angry or dark, or unstable. The most relevant case I can think of was Jason Todd it turned a angry young man into a unstable murderous vigilante after one use. It's like a every time you use it a small piece of you isn't brought back. Lol, I'm sorry but I still find that hilarious he hit on his sister and she tried to bang him, and people shipped it. It's so messed up but so damn funny.

    ReplyDelete
  64. He chose to reveal his identity to her because she was useful ,they weren't even friends when he told her . I know that they are divorced but just like you can't have Clark with Lana instead of Lois ,you can't have Oliver with Felicity instead of Laurel. The show is an adaptation and it's not a re telling of the story . Superhero shows are not supposed to be about love, they are supposed to have a lot of action and they usually have more than 2 main characters . The moment when she saved him was honestly the most lazy writing I have ever seen in my life (and so much fan service ) . And when he said that he was happy to Felicity and only Felicity it really pissed me off because it's like the writers completely discredited the role that Diggle,Thea ,Laurel and even Tommy and Moira played on that journey . They made it seem like Felicity was the only one who helped him be happy which certainly isn't true. And about the character development we could have spent more time with Thea who out of the blue decided to be Red Arrow instead of having the forced trio (Oli,Felicity and Diggle) have a hundred scenes . We could have also seen Laurel as an actual part of the team

    ReplyDelete
  65. But aren't the effects suppoaed to be temporary?
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Technically he only noted that she was hot and she just tried to kiss him because she was drunk and he was her big brother's handsome best friend, and he told her then that she was like his little sister. So it was kinda maybe a little understandable *shudders for infinity*. Aside from those disturbing incedents, which I'm collectively choosing to forget, he was very sweet to her especially in The Return. You think that's bad? I just found out that some people ship Oliver and Thea!! There are some sickos out there. At least no one knew Tommy and Thea were siblings.

    ReplyDelete
  66. The insanity is temporary. The other things can be more permanent. Granted I should bring up in Jason's case Ra's was also using the pit and that could have affected him. But this is technically magic (yet also science) so not exact. Yeah I've seen the shippers. Also heard people ship Eobard and Barry which is so very wrong. Dude killed Barry's mom. Plus it makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I see. I'm surprised I never thought to ask about this before but did Oliver and Ra's meet in the comics?
You're kidding?! And I thought the Barry/Eddie shippers were bad! What's wrong with people? They started writing fanfics about Laurel and Cisco minutes after the episode aired. People need to stop shipping every two individuals who share a scene for more than two minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My thought exactly. The fact that he's added after the original five characters makes me think that he'll be one of the first to go.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I wonder if Tommy will show up on Arrow anymore in the flashbacks. He could have always shown up in Coast City.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Myself, I was expecting something similar to Tommy in New 52 where Tommy wakes up after apparently dying in a completely mysterious fashion un-related to the LP.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Don't know. Don't watch that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes! I loved him on Arrow. I'm really excited for his role on Chicago Med.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hahah. I'm going to hope that being in a hospital gives them a little extra 'breathing' room!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh man, so excited about this show. Would have been even awesomer if Amanda Righetti was still on board though.
