  1. Another great episode. I do like Verity, so found her story sad this week, she so doesn't deserve to end up as a maiden aunt, but it does seem to be heading that way for her atm.

Elizabeth couldn't have delivered the news about her pregnancy in much of a worse way than she did to Ross, not liking her much really, though she is played very well. I prefer George as a baddie mind, he's far less discrete about his intentions and isn't leading anyone on.

  2. Yes I dont care for her much either. But hopefully she'll step back so that ross and demelza's relationship can develop...I love demelza more and more with each scene!

  3. Same here, she had a hard time of it this episode, god only knows what her life was like before though if she felt better off at Nampara than her father's house!

  4. I really liked this episode, much more than the first episode (which I also liked). Last week felt like it was more about introducing the characters and setting up the world. With this week's episode I felt like we got past that and were able to fully get into the story.

I don't think a lot of people like Elisabeth at this point in the story, but I kind of feel for her, which is mostly because of the way she is played. The actress is doing a very good job!

  5. There was a huge cast to get across in the first episode, it's a wonder that it went as smoothly as it did in a lot of ways really. I can see why some thought it slow, but I thought it was done well all things considered. They've got the chemistry and balance right with the casting I feel, which helps tremendously.

I think this Elizabeth doesn't seem to be as reviled as the previous incarnation was, she's coming across as less ice maiden and more mixed up and confused perhaps? I'm not sensing a lot of bitterness from her at the moment, though the instant dislike between her and Demelza was very well done, the undercurrent during that scene was so spiky!

  6. I loved the episode. Demelza and Verity are becoming my favourites. I felt so sorry for Verity but I hope that's not the end for her. I also feel sorry for Elizabeth. She didn't know that Ross was alive and she was trying to do what was expected of her. Now he is back, she is married and pregnant and yet she still has feelings for him. I loved the scene between Demelza and Elizabeth. You could see they really don't like each other. The preview for next week looks great. There seem to be some interesting scenes between Ross and Demelza. But is it just me or there is going to be a quite big time jump?

  7. It does seem like quite a big time jump since Elizabeth has the baby in the promo. I've not read the novels (but I plan to do so now that I'm hooked on the show) so I'm not sure what takes place when, though I do have a rough idea of most of the major events coming up.

I loved the scene between Elizabeth and Demelza too, it was very subtle but the atmosphere was definitely not pleasant was it. The tone was very different to when Verity was at the house, for example. Rivals to tends to instinctively recognise each other though I think, even if they aren't always fully aware of why they put their defences up at first. Or, at least, that's how it came across to me in that scene.

  8. I thought they will devote more time to show us Ross's struggles with reopening the mines but I guess, since the first season covers 2 books, they had to speed up things a little bit. It is strange how you can easily sense that someone is your rival. That scene was well played by both actresses.

  9. I'm glad that the three leads have that chemistry, it looks like they have been cast very well. Looking forward to seeing how the relationship between them grows over the series.

My guess is that they've sped things up a bit to get the audience interested in some of the character dynamics as quickly as possible? The nature of television viewing these days and attention spans aren't perhaps the same as they are when you read a book, and it can be a hard job to get people invested in your characters quickly enough sometimes I think.

  10. I really enjoyed the episode. Verity's story line was very sad and shows how narrow minded and prejudiced society was. Even the tiniest fleck of shame on your name finished you off forever. I think this is an interesting point with a view of what's to come.
It was great seeing the first signs of a connection between Demelza and Ross. And I also noticed how the temperature dropped 10 degrees when Elizabeth and Demelza met. :) I am not sure whether Elizabeth is actually still in love with Ross or if she just fancies the thought of it.
Poor Francis is getting waylaid by George who no doubt will cause a lot of misery for Ross in the future. Francis is such a sad character. His father dominates him, but, at the same time, has no respect for his son because he has no charisma or drive.
Looking forward to the next episode.

  11. I found the physical way Francis manhandled Verity, on more than one occasion, during the argument quite unsettling considering he was supposedly 'rescuing her good name'. He even knocked her to ground at one point and the only person who even noticed was Ross, for crying out loud! I did love how the weather shadowed the mood throughout that scene, it was very atmospheric :)

Yes, I kind of get the feeling that Elizabeth enjoys the attention and flattery more than she wants to be in a relationship with Ross too, if that's what you mean? I think she may be physically attracted to him, but mentally she prefers the money and fine life she has. She couldn't even bare the thought of sitting down while she was at Nampara, I can't see her ever wanting to live there, lol.

  12. Great episode!
I wonder about Elizabeth's true feelings. Does she love her husband? Does she still have feelings for Ross? Or does she love on
