CBS inched past ABC for Monday overnight household dominance, besting the alphabet net by one-tenth of a rating point. But the bigger story was “Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC, which rose to a season-high 5.3 rating/8 share in households from 8-10 p.m. (and only fluctuated by one-tenth of a rating point in the four half-hours). In the battle of the reality/competitions, “Celebrity Apprentice” trailed competing “The Bachelor” on ABC (6.1/ 9) by only 13 percent.
Considering how well “Celebrity Apprentice” has performed this season, it really is too bad NBC rushed through the entire season. SPOILER ALERT: If you have not seen the second episode last night yet, stop reading. But firing all three members of the losing team had to be a result of the shorter episode order this season. Had there been only one firing, we could have had two additional episodes. Note to Kenya Moore: it is time for you to fade into oblivion.
Despite the lead-in support, freshman NBC drama “State of Affairs” could only muster a 3.2/ 5 in the overnights at 10 p.m., which trailed competing “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 6.2/10) on CBS and “Castle” on ABC (#2: 5.0/ 8) by 48 percent and 36 percent, respectively.
Earlier in the evening on CBS were original installments of 8-9 p.m. sitcoms “2 Broke Girls” (#2: 6.0/ 9) and “Mike & Molly” (#1: 6.1/ 9) into an encore telecast of hit freshman drama “Scorpion” at a 5.1/ 8 (#3) from 9-10 p.m. Yes, BH…the word is hit! Aforementioned “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 6.2/10) built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of the encore “Scorpion” lead-in (5.0/ 8) by 24 percent. And both “2 Broke Girls” and “Mike & Molly” were on par with year-ago Monday 8-9 p.m. time period occupants “”How I Met Your Mother” and “2 Broke Girls.”
Elsewhere, Fox’s demo friendly “Gotham” dipped by one-tenth of a rating point week to week, with a 4.1/ 6 (#4) at 8 p.m. And it led into a typically diluted 2.9/ 4 for “Sleepy Hollow” at 9 p.m., which was 34 percent below the 4.4/ 7 for year-ago occupant “The Following.” Speaking of “The Following,” the Kevin Bacon drama will return for season three on March 2. Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteSH's momentum lasted more. No one hyped it, but it suprised everyone premiering to a 3.2. It started falling when it dropped to low 2s for the final season 1 episodes. Premiering to a series low in season 2 settled its shelf life to just 3 seasons.

Celebrity Apprentice grew to series highs? It's getting expanded and moved away from the role of The Voice filler. it's doing too well for it to not be considered as a fall option.
ReplyDeleteNBC has the Cheryl Burke variety/dance competition show that can easily fill that role over two nights, if needed.
Either SHIELD 2.0 or Sleepy Hollow 2.0. Both shows which started very well but can't seem to find any lasting momentum.
ReplyDeleteIf Gotham falls below a 2.0 (and it will happen very soon), rumored new schedule mate Minority Report is going to get a very tough draw. It'll have to self start or it will be DOA.

ReplyDeleteShield is just plain boring. The problem with Gotham is that the procedural elements are getting on everyone's nerves. The show could have been a huge hit (not just by Fox standards) if it was centered on a teen Bruce Wayne rather than an adult Jim Gordon. Gordon has always been a dull character.

I think that slot should be used for a male skewing drama that appeals to the M18-34 crowd that watches Shield, not to the W25-54 crowd that watches Castle and Forever, it doesn't make sense.

ReplyDeleteYes Gotham is getting closer to Bones household ratings, but their demo numbers are still far higher and they DVR well. Sleepy Hollow is a lot closer to Bones demo numbers. It is sad for FOX that they cannot beat Bachelor or Celebrity Apprentice. It doesn't appear Castle went up or down in demo numbers, maybe they will adjust up. CBS keeps on rolling and State of Affairs is dead.
ReplyDeleteWhich is exactly why I wouldn't bother moving now. I agree that we need to see spring ratings before but if the show hangs on to the same mediocre but passable level it had in the fall I would leave it where it is for one more year. In two years they have the slot open for a new thing anyway. Besides, I think Nashville would completely crater to sub Revenge levels on sundays at 10m (unless the 9pm show hits big time) whereas Castle would do badly but probably better so the slot would be better off. And I don't think Wednesdays at 10 is necessarily a better slot to launch a new drama than Mondays at 10 is.

Well, until very reccently CW only promoted Flash as a hit and rightly so,but since returning from hiatueses,they've been promoting Jane as hit but they didn't earlier in the season.Though they'd learned thier lesson from EOMD

Most CW shows deserve larger audiences but they get the audiences they get. There is nothing stopping JTV getting a bigger audience other than the show its self. Well, readers are not stupid. They know HH ratings are not important for more than 4 decades, and that total viewers were never important. And that broadcast network doesn't care about Live+7 (because advertisers care only about C3, not because networks are evil).
Nobody would care if he would write two articles to separate those things. If he would have one article with objective ratings report, and the other one where he would put crap like "Jane the Virgin is the greatest thing since sliced bread, it should be more viewed." and "I hate Supernatural, I wish Dawn cancelled it five years ago." This mishmash articles, this passive-aggressive disguising? No wonder it irks people.

Scorpion repeat beating Sleepy Hollow, oh dear. Is it normal for a CBS show other than comedies to repeat that well? I don't follow any other CBS ratings.

ReplyDelete... You must be unaware with how well CBS repeats perform. Trust me, no one at FOX is worried about a stable show when its lead in is collapsing.
ReplyDeleteCBS repeats are usually stronger because they are procedural shows.

ReplyDeleteSame here. I've tried multiple times to like it because I like the premise, but somehow, I just can't get into it that much. It's too bad because I do like the cast.

ReplyDeleteDidn't realize Gotham is actually up in total viewers. Seems the 18-49 crowd is tuning out in favor of crappy reality shows.
ReplyDeletePOI's lower ratings can mostly be attributed to going from a fantastic slot (Thursdays at 9) to Tuesdays at 10.
ReplyDeleteI'm not feeling Gotham. It's good, but it's way too procedural. It's a regular police show, why did it need the Batman property to tell the stories they're telling?
ReplyDeleteIf i have to be honest, i would prefer for Gotham to be cancelled so shows like Arrow, Flash or the upcoming Titans could have the freedom to use any of Batman's Rogue Gallery.

ReplyDeleteCastle gets a 1.4 out of a 2.5 lead-in, while Forever gets a 1.0 (in a troubled time slot) out of a 1.5. I know all about the production situation and whatnot, but it's ridiculous that ABC is dead set on bringing Castle back while Forever is deemed dead.

ReplyDeleteI think that Jane the Virgin is a good show on the wrong station and I'm not surprised that the targeted audience didn't embrace it. I think it's ratings might have been better on ABC or ABC Family. Anyway, I don't get why people get so upset about the positive attention that Jane the Virgin is getting, especially since there have been so many complaints in the past about the CW getting no love from the awards circuit. Plus, I think that Monday has often been a tough slot for CW shows and it doesn't have that great a lead-in.

ReplyDeletePossibly, but I think you could argue that there is nothing stopping all the other CW shows from getting better ratings either. If people aren't interested in the 100 or Reign or HOD, then what the fans think, shouldn't matter either.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly about the first thing you said. As for the second thing, it's already been renewed for a second season. The problem is Heller. He loves cop shows (He made The Mentalist) so he made the mistake of centering the show on Gordon.

ReplyDeleteI don't see the big deal. He's allowed to say which shows are his favorites, as long as he reports the results fairly. for example, Jane the Virgin is listed under "loser", so even though he likes the show, he isn't trying to hide that it's ratings aren't great. The ongoing complaint has been that he keeps putting "the 100" under the loser heading, when people argue that it is actually doing OK. it gets the same ratings as Jane the Virgin, but people say that Jane the Virgin is doing terribly (even though the 100 has a much better lead-in that is more likely to share the same audience).
ReplyDeleteYou must also realze that 1.Castle is in season seven,while Forever is in season one.Forever would be getting below 1.0 in season two beyond if even not this spring,. 2.Castle has DVD sales and syndication deal and more episodes of Castle for syndication means more money.3.Forever is WB owned,Castle ABC so ABC makes money off Castles syndication deal while they wouldn't off Foevers if it made to syndication.It's not just about retention .

ReplyDeleteI'm guessing they mean it's a hit with reviewers? .I've only watched one or two episodes of Jane the Virgin, but I watch both Reign and HOD regularly and it doesn't really bother me. I can actually see why the reviewers like Jane the Virgin, even if I haven't had time to watch it. Also, think that Jane the VIrgin is more tied with the 100 (which usually gets adjusted down to 0.5 and has a much better lead-in)
ReplyDeleteAlthough I think that is indeed a very important factor, I think people often forget that POI finished Season 2 on a very weak note, hitting a string of three consecutive 2.4s (season average was a 2.9, so this was way below average). The move to Tuesday certainly accelerated this but I doubt the show would have come back to the consistent 3.0 level in the following fall even if it had remained where it was.

ReplyDeleteIf Penguin was called Alejandro Molinera, he would still be a great character. The story is good, yet it does not use the Batman property at all.
ReplyDeleteThe Batman trademark just makes the show worst. Because they "must" show Selina and Bruce because of who they become. It needs to prove itself by mixing characters that appear at the most random moments and give nothing to the show but the "look who's here! It's the girl that will become Catwoman! We're a Batman show!".
A show like Arrow would use the property better... Oliver Queen could have fought the real Scarecrow in 3x01 instead of the fake one. They could have used Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad instead of Cupid. Imagine Oliver Queen fighting Dr. Hugo Strange as a Big Bad, a villain that challenge him on a mental level!
Gotham, while i enjoy it, it's worthless as a comicbook show... And i think it will keep on dropping because for people who likes Batman, the show is a regular cop show(Arrow is more Batman-esque than Gotham); and for people who likes cop shows they think of it as a comicbook show, leaving it for shows like CSI and the likes.

As a hit series,cause by CW standards ratings wise is is.But if Czw were to promote Dixie or Reign as " hit show" with the same demo as Jane,people would laugh or complain or both.
ReplyDeleteI say Jane is tied with Reign,HoD cause they all three tend to get 0.4-0.5 consistently with a couple times above or below that 'but mostly what get is 0.4-05 while The 100 gets 0.5 mainly & Jane is closer to Reign,Dixie in total viewrers in the low 1milion while The 100 is more mid to high 1million...I guess CW could mean " hit with critics/reviewers" but still..I completely get them touting Flash w
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that if they should be getting better ratings they would be getting those ratings. Not everyone enjoys the same thing. This same comment could be said about every last show slisted on every last website. They get what they earn, i do not think any blog determines it otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYes exactly a one year old show should not be doing a ten year olds numbers ,but since demo numbers are the only thing that apparently counts Gotham is way ahead of Bones. Gotham usually does demo numbers in the 2 range and Bones with their last one only did a 1.3. There is always the chance that Gotham will adjust up

ReplyDeleteYour're right, it had more 0.4 scores in the beginning. I guess I was looking more at the past few weeks where they've had the same ratings. They're both listed as having an average demo score of 0.53 for the entire season whereas HOD and Reign are 0.40 and 0.42 respectively. Another chart has the JTV average as 0.48 instead of 0.53. I don't know why the numbers are different, but it still puts its rating closer to the 100 and the other 2 shows
