———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Empire” (Fox)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Mentalist” (CBS), “Criminal Minds” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The 100” (CW)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
In what could be a first for any network historically, bona fide new hit drama “Empire” on Fox built in the overnights for the third consecutive week. It rose to a 7.9 rating/12 share in households from 9-10 p.m., which was four percent above the 7.6/12 one week earlier (and that translated into a stellar 11.07 million viewers and a 4.4 rating/13 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). Comparably, overnight retention for “Empire” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “American Idol” (8.2/13) was rock-solid at 96 percent. And growth for “Empire” out of “American Idol” among adults 18-49 last week (4.4/13 vs. 3.4/11) was 29 percent. Four-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12.

“American Idol,” meanwhile, scored a 7.9/12 from 8-9 p.m., which was only five percent below the 8.3/13 on the year-ago evening.

Over at CBS, temporary 8-9 p.m. time period filler “The Mentalist” remained a valid older-skewing option at a second-place 6.1/ 9 in the household overnights. Comparably, this was on par from one week earlier, and it led into a typical 6.4/10 (#2) for veteran “Criminal Minds” from 9-10 p.m. On-the-fence “Stalker” capped off the night for the Eye net with a first-place 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was also equal to one week earlier. Chances of “Stalker” returning for a second season are truly 50-50.

Elsewhere, ABC populated the evening with encore telecasts of sitcoms “The Middle” (#3: 3.7/ 6), “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.1/ 5), “Modern Family” (#3: 3.5/ 5) and three episodes of “Black-ish” (9:30 p.m.: #3: 2.7/ 4; 10 p.m. #3: 2.6/ 4; 10:30 p.m.: #3: 2.2/ 4). Note to the Emmy voters: Eden Sher on “The Middle” needs to finally be recognized! NBC also traveled the repeat route care of “The Mysteries of Laura” (#4: 2.7/ 4), “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 2.5/ 4) and “Chicago PD” (#2: 2.7/ 5). And sophomore “The 100” on The CW (#5: 1.1/ 2 at 9 p.m.) continues to squander the lead-in support from “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3 at 8 p.m.), which an overnight loss of 48 percent.

Wow Empire! The 100 and arrow seem to be steady :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Arrow seems a bit down from last week :( Let's hope for another 0.6 for The 100 and 1.1 for Arrow! :D

    ReplyDelete
  4. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:20

True arrow does seem a bit down bur at least the 100 is steady. The 100 is such a great show!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I love Stalker but the show is very very likely to be cancelled, I would probably even dare with a certain.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I predicted 4.7/4.8 for EMPIRE yesterday.Seems like it'll be touching that!Stupendous!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Last week Arrow had a 1.14 in finals. So it was practically a 1.2 That means it still has room to fall and keep the 1.1 Not that the overnights are a good indication of the demo especially with young skewing CW shows but still.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's a shame but I agree. It has almost no chance.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Chances of “Stalker” returning for a second season are truly 50-50.
    No they aren't.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Empire, the gift that keeps on giving.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Can i ask you for Reign's final number for last week? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  12. CW fucked over The 100 with the replacement of Basketball in some areas...

    ReplyDelete
  13. It makes me more happy that Taraji is part of this ginormous hit.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It was pre-empted a lot last season too and didn't drop below 0.5, hopefully it won't this time either

    ReplyDelete
  15. Top 25 Numbers have been entered into the Table

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow, I don't understand why Empire is growing more and more.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:26

What is up with the hate towards the 100, Marc?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Empire just isn't stopping. Damn!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow at Empire. Four weeks of growth is crazy.

And it looks like Chicago PD growing out of Law and Order: SVU is going to be a regular event now as it did so, even in encores.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's not hate. He's simply stating a fact that it lost 48% of it's lead in.

    You're confusing hate for facts.

And I love the 100 but there is no hate in his post.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My god... Empire keeps rising, it's unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's 100% certain for cancellation.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's so fun to see any show shatter historical records and create new ones.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Empire...the new American Idol.

    ReplyDelete
  25. He hates every shows that is not JTV

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stalker's chances of making it to next season is 0%. 50-50 is being a wee bit optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am watching and loving The Empire. But watching it's ratings rise and break more records is its own different form of entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So, maybe 4.6-4.7 for Empire? This show is amazing, it's killing it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. As much as I would like to see a renewal, I am leaning more towards 20/80.

    ReplyDelete
  30. He will find any way to target shows he hates even if that means distorting the facts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Marc doesn't know squat.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Damn it Empire stop rising! I'm really shocked it keeps rising though, like why? I'm not sure where but The 100 was pre-empted in places for basketball. It was a totally amazing episode though :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. What did he say that was "hateful"?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Empire at a 4.9.

    Freaking nightmare!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. 50/50 is the best odds I've seen given to Stalker by anybody in quite awhile. I like to see that.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:28

Wow top 25 posted so early :) how great!!!!! Empire is a beast and good for arrow and the 100 even though the 100 was pre-empted

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'll take the word of someone who actually gets paid to report the ratings over someone who just comments about them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read that on Jason's Twitter. That's so bad but hopefully the show can retain an 0.5. Although it would be even more impressive now if it could hit an 0.6.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:28

    Lol true

    ReplyDelete
  40. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:28

Every week he talks abour how it fails to profit from its lead-in and it is very visible that he does not like it which leads me to believe that he does not watch it. Every Person who watches that show loves it!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:28

Nice that they are so early :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Me neither. But it is awesome to watch. Maybe it can keep on going up the rest of its series run too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Elsewhere, ABC seems stable, especially the 9 p.m. hour against the monster that is Empire.

    Why don't we have 10 p.m. top25 hours?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Empire is owning Wednesdays!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow Empire and good for Arrow!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm seeing the 10 pm top 25. Maybe you should try refreshing. And ABC was in repeats last night.

    ReplyDelete
  47. How long will it take Empire to beat TBBT for the highest show on broadcast network this season?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:30

I think the 100 might even be able to Hit a 0.7 and then due to pre-emption it will adjust down to a 0.6
    does that Sound right?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sure it was a 0.41 ;)

    ReplyDelete
  50. It shows up now.

I know ABC was in repeats but the repeats seem fairly in norm with the numbers it usually pulled last week. But that's perhaps due to pre-emption

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'd be very happy with a 0.6 in finals but I think it might get 0.5, a 0.6 with pre-emptions sounds too good to be true!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I hope there is still hope for Stalker, I really like that show :))

    ReplyDelete
  53. Lol, this comment made me laugh so much.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:32

well yeah but usually it Has a 0.5 in the top 25 and often went up to a 0.6 so who knows :P

    ReplyDelete
  55. As much as I would love that to happen, I don't think it will. More likely to be an 0.5 in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I've watched Empire's trailer months ago. Didn't finish it. Don't even remember it. It seemed boring. I guess I was wrong...

    ReplyDelete
  57. This comment made me roll my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. When the network pulls a show from schedule before all the episodes have aired and it is are the only freshman drama not renewed, you know that it's getting cancelled

    ReplyDelete
  59. Some people just like to grasp at straws. I feel sorry for him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Guesses from top25:
    - The Mentalist 1.2
    - American Idol: 2.9-3.0
    - Arrow: 1.1
    - Criminal Minds: 2.0
    - Empire: 4.4
    - The 100: 0.6
    - Stalker: 1.6-1.7

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think Empire won't grow either but I'm not waging my bets against it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It will probably be adjusted up in the finals.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well you're a dick so that doesn't surprise me much. You've bad mouthed shows I've like on here before saying they have no chance of getting renewed and low and behold they are. Helix and Murder in the First immediately come to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  64. the mentalist 1.4 my guess. always 0.2 higher than top 25 number on Wednesday:)

    ReplyDelete
  65. There was a week it wasn't adjusted up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:37

    Probably :/

    ReplyDelete
  67. Come on Big Bang Theory, fall below a 4.3 tomorrow so Empire can be #1 scripted show of the week before Walking Dead comes back to take it! Do it!

    ReplyDelete
  68. And that 1.8 for Criminal Minds might actually stick. It was pre-empted somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I want that in writing, until then I keep up hope :)) I will really miss Maggie Q and Dylan McD on my screen.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Proof that diversity in your shows is be hugely beneficial, hope more networks realise this.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Keep in mind that I only have the top25 numbers for Empire for its first
episode so my sample to guess for it is very limited and could easily
    be way off.

    ReplyDelete
  72. You're missing a data point then.
We had the top25 ratings for Empire's second episode: a 4.5 and that ended up translating into a 4.0.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Do you maybe have Hart of Dixie's? I want to know how close to adjusting down it was.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I appreciate the effort and time it takes to do these. Thanks. Keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Well it doesn't always work but look at Black-ish and How To Get Away, those combined with Empire show that it can work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. It's no problem at all. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  77. For what it is worth, my predictions are for final numbers, not preliminary.

However, keep in mind that I only have the top25 numbers for Empire for its first episode so my sample to guess for it is very limited and could easily be way off.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I watched liked the show too, but I ended up dropping it because I had too many shows to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  79. i like empire its soapy fun that dosen´t take itself to seriously and i´m all in for the 12 episodes

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's not always the case.

    ReplyDelete
  81. It depends on what fails29 January 2015 at 14:42

The Empire Strikes Back, and no jedi can get on its way.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well Cristela isn´t a very good show in my opinion

    ReplyDelete
  83. Woah empire! I caught up on it too see what the fuss was about and im glad I did what a great show cookie and lucious have superb banter for a divorced couple and the plots and music are great
Its made me DVR the 100 too which I used to watch live

    ReplyDelete
  84. Well, HTGAWM had the Shonda push.

    ReplyDelete
  85. From what some friends of mine told me, neither is Empire.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I found it somewhat funny, but not enough for me to keep it watching everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think empire is fine its a fun show, it´s not winning any awards but it keeps me entertained and glued to the screen during it there is hardly any checking the phone whilst watching it

    ReplyDelete
  88. Empire is just too impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Key word is can, its not a dead cert but nothing is, but its a big achievement and an important one. Diversity should be encouraged behind the scenes and in front of the camera. There is an audience out there that wants to see non white actors in prominent roles but also Empire especially shows it has a broad appeal.

    ReplyDelete
  90. They must have entered it wrong. Reign was 0.4 last week

    ReplyDelete
  91. All i want is for Arrow to stay above 1.0 and The 100 above 0.5. That's all i'm asking for.

I still hope Arrow remains above 1.0s for the remaining of the season. It seems it will be more serialized now, wich is how the show works best. And with Laurel being managed well, Ray being less creepy(he wasn't creepy in both 3x10 and 3x11, now that Felicity knows his secret), a more confident Team Arrow and Oliver coming back... I think we could stay above 1.0s.

    ReplyDelete
  92. But they have a 0.41, so it is okay, no?

    ReplyDelete
  93. i was talking about Hart of dixie not Reign

    ReplyDelete
  94. It had an actual 0.50. It is pretty impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Completely unrelated: #ScandalThursday is already trending on Twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:53

I cannot wait! And HTGAWM as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Don't care about Scandal but can't wait for HTGAWM and GA.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:54

I think HTGAWM had even more hype

    ReplyDelete
  99. Damn it pre-emptions! They get me excited for nothing >_<

    ReplyDelete
  100. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:54

Agree i don't like GA either but i have watched it

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think you are right, if you look at the population numbers in the US there is a huge potential for shows who actually minimize white actors. Plus Empire has the music which attracts an younger and broader audience.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hopefully, the episode delivers. I just want the episode to deliver.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I mean Ibget that Marc is a Virgin but this bashing against The100 is awful.
JTV did solid on a night without proper competition and The100 is facing SVU and Empire and still does an great job.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:55

True that mid season finale was MIND BLOWING and INCREDIBLE

    ReplyDelete
  105. Most people have watched Grey's at one point or the other. It was too big of a hit and a true cultural phenomenon to have missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Low 3s for GA would be my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I cared for Grey's once too, don't get me wrong.

But Scandal and HTGAWM are definitely more my thing.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Revenge and OUAT29 January 2015 at 14:57

Grey's did not end on a big cliffhanger so i don't think it will be able to Hit the 3s

    ReplyDelete
  109. If GA does low 3's, then I could potentially see high 3's for Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Marc constantly puts The 100 in Losers but not JTV and has clearly bad mouthed the show before. He goes on about retention just for an excuse to bad mouth it, he doesn't do that for SPN's poor retention. No CW show works well as a lead-in either, that's pretty well known, and in The 100's case, pretty obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Ive never seen Greys and have no desire to either.

    ReplyDelete
  112. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised, but I'm also not betting they'll be that high. I predict mids 3s for both. I don't think Grey's hitting 3s should make the other two show sky rocket; it helps, but to an extent

    ReplyDelete
  113. It kinda did and there are still a lot of MerDer fans.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Last year Scandal came back from its midseason finale with a 3.4, so don't rule it out

    ReplyDelete
  115. The thing about TGIT is that every show is 'designed' to benefit from the show before it (well, except Grey's but that show never really needed anyone to hold its hand after season 2):
    - Scandal usually jumps around .5-.7 from a Grey's episode;
    - HTGAWM usually has really good retention from Scandal.

So, in theory, the higher Grey's ends up being, the higher the other two end up being too.

    ReplyDelete
  116. People want to see others who looks like them on tv. And if a show is entertaining then people will watch. Every year shows on top of shows starring white people fail but no one says we should stop making shows with them. But if one with a non-white cast fails it's "see no one wants to watch them" and when these shows do well, they'll find anything to try and discredit them " it's not good, it sets race relationship back, advertisers don't care about those audiences" etc.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I've been tempted to watch it, but then I see that there are like 11 seasons to catch up and I'm like "who has time for that?"

    ReplyDelete
  118. So happy for Arrow and The 100. But mostly relieved about Arrow. I was afraid of what Oliver's absence might do to the ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  119. sure but he isn´t reporting on demo its HH and the 100 lost 48% of its lead in those are the facts and thats not hate from him just numbers i mean i quess he could spin those numbers like he does for Jane is that was is bugging you?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Don't worry about it. He isn't the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  121. add me to the "never watched it" list

    ReplyDelete
  122. OH GA is just so good and for a stan like me who has re watched it a couple of times it never gets old so hop to it next summer i´m telling you wont be sorry

    ReplyDelete
