Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored a typical overnight Tuesday victory, besting No. 2 NBC by a sizeable 52 percent. But the race among adults 18-49 (and other key young adult demos) could be a close call. The CW, meanwhile, has a bona fide hit on its Tuesday roster called “The Flash,” which in week two scored a 3.0 rating/5 share in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this was 88 percent above former time period occupant “The Originals” on the year-ago evening (1.6/ 2 on 10/15/13), with erosion of only 12 percent from its 3.4/ 5 opener one week earlier. And that 3.4/ 5 translated into 6.42 million viewers with 3-days of DVR usage factored in (which was the CW’s most-watched series premiere ever).
Leading out of episode two of “The Flash” was veteran “Supernatural,” which was on par from the year-ago telecast at a 1.5/ 2 (#5) at 9 p.m.
In series-premiere news, NBC sitcom “Marry Me” (out of “The Voice”) opened with a 5.6/ 9 at 9 p.m. Comparably, this was an improvement of 10 percent from the time period premiere of former occupant “About a Boy” (5.1/ 8 on 3/04/14). And overnight retention for “Marry Me” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.8/14) was 64 percent. In other words, the lead-in still matters.
Next on NBC was the sophomore season-premiere of comedy “About a Boy” at a 4.2/ 6 at 9:30 p.m., which was on par from the time period premiere of former failed time period occupant “Growing Up Fisher” on March 4. Comparably, retention for “About a Boy” out of “Marry Me” was 75 percent. In other words, “About a Boy” would be stronger if it aired immediately following “The Voice.”
Overall, “The Voice” scored a rock-solid (and second place) 8.3/13 from 8-9 p.m., which will own the hour in the key young adult demos. And drama “Chicago Fire” capped off the evening with a second-place 4.8/ 8 at 10 p.m., which dipped from its year-ago (5.2/ 9 on 10/15/13) and week-ago (5.4/ 9 on Oct. 7) time period averages by 8 and 11 percent, respectively.
Over at CBS, “NCIS” topped the evening, as always, with a 10.8/17 at 8 p.m., which is 11 percent below the 12.2/19 on the year-ago evening. And it led into a dominant 10.5/15 for “NCIS: New Orleans” at 9 p.m., which held 91 percent of the 8:30 p.m. portion of its parent series (11.0/17). “Person of Interest” closed the night for the Eye net on par from one week earlier at a 6.5/11 (which was 19 percent below the 8.0/14 on the year-ago night).
Elsewhere, week three of struggling ABC 8-9 p.m. sitcoms “Selfie” (#4: 2.9/ 5) and “Manhattan Love Story” (#4: 2.3/ 4) showed no signs of improvement, which means that both are vying to become the first new series cancellation of the young television season. Comparably, the pair, on average, declined from year-ago occupant “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” (5.0/ 8 on 10/15/13) by a significant 48 percent. And a 3.2/ 5 in the overnights (#3) for relocated “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at 9 p.m. was 36 percent below its year-ago performance at 8 p.m. (and similar to year-ago 9-10 p.m. Tuesday sitcoms “The Goldbergs – 3.7/ 6 – and Trophy Wife – 2.9/ 5).
Also on ABC, episode four of drama “Forever” (#3: 3.4/ 6 at 10 p.m.) dropped by six percent week-to-week (vs. a 3.6/ 6 on Oct. 7). But this was still a marked improvement from a repeat of “Scandal” one year earlier (2.0/ 3 on 10/15/13), which replaced short-lived “Lucky 7.” In other words, the low bar of comparison for “Forever” is a positive.
Fox, meanwhile, continues to sink with its combination of repeats of “The Simpsons” (#5: 1.3/ 2) and “Bob’s Burgers” (#5: 0.9/ 1) from 8-9 p.m. and original installments of “New Girl” (#4: 1.8/ 3) and “The Mindy Project” (#4: 1.7/ 3) from 9-10 p.m. down by 22 percent from last week’s already abysmal overnight average. Maybe opening the evening last fall with sitcom “Dads” was not so bad after all!

Good for The Flash to hold up. Now if it would stabilize at this ratings that would be amazing.
ReplyDeleteyikes, the FOX ratings are lousy
ReplyDeleteGiven that Marry Me got decent to good reviews overall, I can see it sticking around for a while if it levels off at at least a somewhat decent level. NBC's got a lot of comedies yet to premiere, but it's gotta give at least one of these time to establish itself. Might as well be a show that, for now, appears to work.
ReplyDeleteI'm predicting a 3.0 or high 2's for Marry Me based on the early ratings. That would be awesome because I absolutely adored the premiere. The Flash is still doing amazing for The CW! I'm expecting a full season order any moment now.
ReplyDeleteGood for The Flash again!Go CW!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes the flash!! I loved the second episode
ReplyDeleteAnd agents of shield is higher that last week I finally can have a sigh of relief
The Flash dropped just a little bit, which is great! It dropped 12% in HH, so if it dropped that amount in the demos it would be a still huge (for the CW) 1.7. Demos and HH are not actually correlated, but we can expect something like that.
ReplyDeleteGood job Marry Me! Not a huge premiere, but still a lot of viewers; let's hope it scores high 2s!- or even 3s if possible, but it's unlikely
I'll probably stay in the 1.9-1.7 range the whole season, which is fine
ReplyDeleteThey'll improve once Master Chef premieres on November, but until then it's going to look pretty ugly
ReplyDeleteMy Tuesday shows, The Flash on the CW super good!!!! And Forever is steady a little bit higher than AOS, which is good!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere will be no more airings of entertainment program on Tuesday for FOX until that happens I think. The World Series will be airing until the premiere of Masterchef I think.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Flash stabilizes at around this level
ReplyDeleteNBC would be over the moon with a 3.0.
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad to hear the Marry Me started off well. I haven't got a chance to watch it yet but I'm really excited for it.
ReplyDeleteLoving the numbers for the Flash. Not so much for Selfie :(
Haven't seen the second episode yet due to ...ahem... technical difficulties! But it's good to hear it was as equally enjoyable as the pilot
ReplyDeletePity Spn seems to have fallen away a bit from Flash's lead-in but well, unfortunately we're in the Carver era. Sigh!
I really hope so the show is so good right now and I do want to see how civil war storyline will play out in AOS
ReplyDeleteGo ahead CW and announce The Flash full season. Great Tuesday night for them. I watch so much on Tuesday's, I'm happy for almost everything. What I like the most about the above release is the year to year gains/losses. The CW is the only network to gain and they did it with an overwhelming 53 percent.
ReplyDeleteJust waiting for Forever numbers while biting my nails...
ReplyDeletePretty low for cbs
ReplyDelete1.1 in top 25
ReplyDeleteSince marry me did 2.7 in top 25 i am guessing 2.5 in final
ReplyDeleteI believe that cbs tends to be undervalued in top25 markets numbers (same, to some extent, to nbc). The younger skewing networks (ABC, FOX, CW) tend to be overvalued. That's just my unscientific impression though.
ReplyDeleteTrue but in general cbs shows are starting to show their ages
ReplyDeleteMostly the numbers tend to go up from the top 25 markets. I can't find last week's top 25 anymore but I remember NOLA having lower than a 2.0 in top 25, but ending up as a 2.3 overall.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it has all that much to do with the Carver era. This is a 10-year old show going up against Agents of Shield, which has a very similar demo.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how many other shows would do better in the timeslot.
Last week, NOLA had a 2.0 in top 25.
ReplyDeleteIs that good? Lol I'm not to good with these numbers... Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI really hope About a Boy managed to do a bit better than that. I love that show, I really don't want to see it in trouble and NBC' deep bench of comedy scares me.
ReplyDelete"NBC' deep bench of comedy"
ReplyDeletewhat are you smoking and will you please share
I meant the huge amount of comedy backups that they have for midseason (5)
ReplyDeleteI think he means that it has a lot of shows that have yet to air, and he's entirely right.
ReplyDeleteright but they can't possibly launch them all at the same time
ReplyDeleteWho said anything about launching them all at the same time?
ReplyDeletewell they need at least a few comedies to stick around is what i'm saying
ReplyDeleteAbout a Boy had a great episode last night too.
ReplyDeleteWhy not have shows on weekends ? (CW) sorry for my english
ReplyDeleteThose CBS Top 25 Market numbers can't be right! Holy shit at The Flash!!! Looks like the CW have a new flagship series. Agents of SHIELD continues to stay steady with possible upward adjustments in the finals as they always do, S3 is a sure thing at this point.
ReplyDeleteone day i will see supernatural in the winners
ReplyDeletePOI pulled the same demo as Selfie? 1.2???? Holy crap. Hope Nolan and Tassler are second, third, fourth-guessing themselves this morning. POI needs to watch the Supernatural special -- the show lives and dies because of the relationship between the leads, and POI is the same. They've forgotten that -- Finch & Reese weren't even in the same room this week -- and it's showing in the ratings.
ReplyDeleteUsually in the Tues Fast Nationals, CBS goes up and MAOS goes down.
ReplyDeleteIs the very opposite of good.
ReplyDeleteIt'll probably be a 2.8 or 2.9 in the preliminary ratings.
ReplyDeleteHope so, hate those Person of Interest numbers!
ReplyDeleteI liked marry me show. Maybe even an alternative for my himym addiction
ReplyDeleteAm I seeing right ??
ReplyDeleteflash 1.9 .
Hopefully Agents of Shield goes up. And it looks like About a Boy is doing good, and happy to see The Flash doing amazing still!
ReplyDeleteNope
ReplyDeleteI never understood why they don't have shows at the weekend either. Your English is good!
ReplyDeletewell it had 2.1/2.2 last week in top 25 markets.
ReplyDeleteFast Nationals...
ReplyDeleteMAOS 1.6
POI 1.5
Marry Me 2.3
Flash 1.6/1.7
CF 2.0
AAB 1.8
thanks
ReplyDeleteyay go flash
ReplyDeletedisappointing for marry me considering what a monster lead-in it must've had
Ok for marry me but thought it would do higher
ReplyDeleteThe Flash did a 1.6.
ReplyDeleteMarry Me did a 2.3
Only if Hell freezes over. Marc Berman hates Supernatural, or at the very least strongly believes that it should have been canceled a few years ago, ratings be damned! He only looks at total numbers, not demgraphic numbers. He also belongs strongly that retaining ratings from the previous show is very important for "winning" However, last year when Supernatural was doing better than its lead in, The Originals, he still couldn't call Supernatural a winner. I can't imagine him ever calling Supernatural a winner.
ReplyDeleteIt's official: THE FLASH is a big honkin' hit for CW. Episode 2 retains 100 percent of A18-49 from debut, with a 1.6. Viewers: 4.1M— Joe Adalian (@TVMoJoe) October 15, 2014
ReplyDeletewow
SHIELD is at a 1.6. Ouch. So low.
ReplyDeleteYay The Flash!!!
ReplyDeletethe premiere did 1.9,this one did 1.6.How exactly did it retain 100%?
ReplyDeleteI am getting furious with the Agents of Shield ratings
ReplyDeleteDidn't Ep 1 have a 1.8 in the fast nationals?
ReplyDelete1.6 initial demo freakin good rating for a cw show
ReplyDeleteyo i just embed the tweets
ReplyDeleteI think it's more important it didn't bomb outright. It's actually funny, and I think if NBC gives it time, it'll work.
ReplyDeleteThey're talking about the A18-49 demo
ReplyDeleteI think Joe meant from the fast nationals, and even then he's wrong, since it got 1.8.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Flash adjusts up!
ReplyDeleteI was right regarding flash. It dropped to a respectable level.1.6 ratings and 4 mil viewership on CW is incredible!
ReplyDeleteWhy ?
ReplyDeleteThe pilot got 1.8 in the fast nationals.
ReplyDeleteIt's too damn low.
ReplyDeletewtf is wrong with poi?
ReplyDeleteit went up to a 1.7 in the next half hour, so i think it will
ReplyDeletelol damn @ flash probably beating shield again
I was expecting mid 2s for Marry Me at least, a little disappointed.
ReplyDeleteNot that bad for SPN considering the AOS competition, although it could adjust down.
ReplyDeleteToo bad about Forever. My parents really enjoy that show. They have bad luck with ABC shows (they loved Trophy Wife).
Oh yeah if it went up to 1.7 then it will probably adjust up haha
ReplyDeleteOh I think it might go lower in spring unfounately
ReplyDeleteit would most probably get adjusted up to tie it's series low 1.7.
ReplyDeleteI know right I love that show. Next ep I m sure the ratings will go up.
ReplyDeleteIf they were going against each other it would probably knock both shows down further.
ReplyDeleteFlash renewal in 3, 2, 1...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm talking aboutwhat the tweet said.
ReplyDeletethe way it's eroding ratings and viewership,it's spring numbers can be deadly!
ReplyDeleteWow, I was way off in my predictions for Marry Me XD. It still did pretty good. I'm just going to go ahead and assume that SHIELD will never be able to go back to the 2.0 range :/
ReplyDeleteseriously....this show is so funny deserve to be higher
ReplyDeleteIt had 1.9 last week. A 1.6 is not a 100% retaintion out of 1.9
ReplyDeleteSelfie and MLS cancellation in 3, 2,1
ReplyDeleteAt least two of those shows have orders for only 6 episodes, and while I love Parks and am happy it's getting a proper send off, I don't care where it goes. I doubt NBC does, either. NBC doesn't have the Olympics or anything like that to work around. It could easily order a back nine for a show like MM and then run it with fewer commercials.
ReplyDeleteThey'll probably give it the back order first.
ReplyDeleteTgey have to order a full season first lol
ReplyDeleteit doesn't work like that exactly, even if it doesn't-this is an incredible rating.
ReplyDeleteI hope The Flash gets adjusted up. Love this show already.
ReplyDeletefull season order should be coming later today i think.Renewal will have to wait until jan.

Still sad about A to Z.
ReplyDeleteit very good.
ReplyDeleteThe flash grew in the second half!Nice! SPN should've performed a little better with such wonderful lead-in!
ReplyDeleteso happy CF is stable!
ReplyDeleteSPN is wasting that lead-in.
ReplyDeleteIt's true.I hope the messengers get it mid-season.SPN should move to mondays behind TO after JtV wraps up.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the show's age and that it's so similar in demo to AoS, that's not much of a surprise. Lead-ins also tend to be meaningless on CW.
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
ReplyDeleteRandom moving around doesn't really help most shows - like Bones last season.
ReplyDeleteShield :(
ReplyDeletea year ago, both arrow and SPN got benefited from each other!
ReplyDeleteThat's assuming CW shows have success based on lead-ins. It never helped any shows after TVD.
ReplyDeleteWell forever started great after 2 EPs absence of that hoodie man .its kinda becoming a stand out procedural show
ReplyDeleteI knowww, right?
ReplyDeleteif anyone can sustain random moving,it's SPN.
ReplyDeletei still dont get why Shield is so low?
ReplyDeleteExactly. Here's hoping the CW moves SPN to Mondays or Thursdays at 9PM soon and uses The Flash's lead-in to launch another show.
ReplyDeleteLast year SPN was with TO.
ReplyDeleteArrow and SPN did help each other, but generally it doesn't make a huge difference on the CW. SPN tends to get around this rating most of the time.
Forever :(
ReplyDeleteUgh, another POI drop.
ABC can't even repeat the PR from last week saying that MLS/Selfie were the highest rated Tuesday comedies, lol.
We need to see the finals, but it looks like MM is a contender to be first in its time slot. That's impressive.
ReplyDeleteViewers bailed after the crappy 1st half of last season and bothered to look back.
ReplyDeleteThat's what people said about Bones.
ReplyDeleteMULANEY now beating MINDY.
ReplyDeleteYikes, POI keeps dropping and dropping.
ReplyDeleteForever is so cancelled.
I still think that Supernatural and AoS airing against each other is hurting both shows,
ReplyDeleteIt's low because its lead-in's are rating so damn low and are bringing SHIELD down.
ReplyDeletemindy's a crap show but you gotta take a cold shower to get rid of your hate boner, its getting a little embarrassing
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping The Flash adjusts up to 1.7, but either way, 1.6 is great for the CW, if it stabilizes soon, it's a huge hit.
ReplyDeleteIt will get even lower when day light saving time begins. I think it's a toss-up for renewal already.
ReplyDeleteOk,the previous year.SPN should benefit a little,that's all i'm saying.If u look at it's ratings individually,it's good for a 10 season old show!
ReplyDeleteit self-started with a mid 4 last season and has an enormous built-in fanbase, lets not play 'it was the lead in's fault' with shield
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. They have the same type of demo. Honestly I think most genre shows would be hurt by AoS. That's why I don't agree with the assumption that anything or everything should be put after Flash and it would do well.
ReplyDeleteIt has been proven true for SPN.I'm not talking about possibilities,it's a proven fact.
ReplyDelete- On NBC, Marry Me started just okayish, I thought it would have been able to premiere in the high 2s. I don't think this is particularly promising but not dooming either. Could go either way and depends a lot on what NBC plans to do at midseason with its schedule when the voice is on hiatus. About a Boy did okay enough I think, although I would have preferred if it had broken a 2.0 Chicago Fire held admirably at 10pm and The Voice is still going very strong even contained in the 8pm hour.
ReplyDelete- ABC was a disaster. I don't get the ratings for Shield. ABC needs to rethink what they are doing with it. They have (had?) the chance to build a coherent night of programming around the show. They need compatible pieces and coherent branding of the night. The only feasible solution I see right now (and it is not the ideal one) is Beyond the Tank | Shield | The Whispers come midseason. Next year, they need to put their development at work to produce compatible dramas to go with the show.
- The Flash continues to perform at ridiculous levels, insane, really. Supernatural should be a little higher though and it's only making my argument that it should have moved to Mondays along with the Originals all along easier. I am getting more and more convinced that it will happen at midseason to make room for iZombie. Jane will either die or get Fridays treatment.
- CBS is not doing well. This is supposed to be one of their best nights and they were down 22% despite the new spin-off. The motherwship was down 20% last night and POI an even greater 32%. Not good at all...
- FOX.. Do we even have to comment? I suppose Mindy and New Girl held as good as expected given the increased comedy competition.
LOL. Keep following me.
ReplyDeleteI see your point, but I think people also overstate how much a lead-in matters. I can't remember how many shows have tanked after TVD. We also don't know how stable Flash will be. Arrow, albeit not as big a hit as Flash, fell significantly late in the first season.
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/TVMoJoe/status/522408948708950016
ReplyDeleteYou mean two years ago? And it didn't really. That was SPN first season back after being in the deathslot when Ostroff tried to kill it. It also benefited from lack of competition at 9pm on Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteRight now AoS and SPN are hurting each other. There is a good amount of crossover between the two shows.
It wasn't 10 years old then though, and it was a lot stronger creatively. That's my concern.
ReplyDeleteIt's not wasting anything. It's in its 10th season it's not going to get any kind of bump from a lead in Besides that whole retentionist thing doesn't work for a network like the CW. SPN has it's core fanbase and a good amount of people watching Flash are switching to Agents of Shield
ReplyDeleteA bit low for About A Boy, but still a decent demo.
ReplyDeleteVery tiny numbers for ABC & FOX comedies
It doesn't have to be a random move. It can a properly planned and promoted midseaosn move like so many shows had before. Bones' first move actually went amazingly last year, it was the second move (the random one) that killed it.
ReplyDeleteForever is slightly higher than AoS in overall viewers but is doing a lot worse than AoS in 18-49 where it really counts. As of right now, it seems that Forever would get canceled before AoS.
ReplyDeleteThat could work, yes. It's just that saying, "Hey let's move SPN to Monday for The Messengers" doesn't seem properly planned to me. They'd be making a big move without having any real idea what the result would be.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash will fall too when it's up against basketball but just like Arrow, it will rise again the following season.
ReplyDeleteU have sound logic.Let's see what their mid-season schedule looks like in dec.Anything is pure speculation before that.
ReplyDeleteHoped for much higher for Marry, but that's still ok. About a Boy retained Marry Me's audience just fine.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash continues to be a winner for The CW! Hopefully it adjusts up to 1.7!
We can dream, brother.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, I think it's still safe enough.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, DST will reduce ABC's drama ratings as a whole so chances are that Shield's relative ratings (aka what matters for renewal) don't chance. The only circumstance in which DST have made a meaningful difference is when shows air at 8pm because DST hit them harder than they hit the other shows, thus effectively lowering their relative ratings.
Shield's ratings so far: 82%; 81%; 81%; 81%. This could put a freshman on the bubble, but not a sophmore, especially one with so many synergies between parent companies.
Oh give me a break, last season it was airing at 8:00 and didn't have any genre shows competing against it. This season ABC moved it to 9:00 pm where it's now competing against a genre show (Supernatural) and has crappy lead-in's to go along with it.
ReplyDeleteYa the lead in thing is vastly overrated especially for a network like CW. Let's see where Flash is at after its 9th or 10th episode and I guarantee you SPN will still be pulling 0.9-1.1. Which would indicate that SPN doesn't depend on a Flash lead in. Besides SPN is a show in its 10th season people that haven't watched the show aren't going to stick around especially the comic book fans who are flipping to AoS right after.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't showing in AoS viewership though. It is eroding week by week.
ReplyDeleteFlash and iZombie wouldn't be very compatible. And if SPN is lower against AoS why wouldn't a similar genre show have the same problem?
ReplyDeleteLike The CW will promote anything that's not a series premier or anything remotely related to TVD haha.
ReplyDeleteShield no way I'm hating this the episodes are really amazing and these ratings are such a huge disappointment
ReplyDeletethis agree.SPN would stay stable regardless of the flash's rating in the latter half of the season.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome for CW but specially for The Flash. It's still huge numbers for the show!!!
ReplyDeleteTrue!LOL!SPN does get a little too less promotion from CW PR!
ReplyDeleteThey are both based on DC Comics, I think they would be similar enough.
ReplyDeleteBesides, where else do you suggest they launch iZombie? On Mondays against the voice and leading from the Originals? On Thursdays against Scandal and leading from The Vampire Diaries?
I think it's either Tuesday or Wednesday and since they have two midseason shows, one will go to one place and one to the other. Since The Messengers is also a limited series like The 100, I think it makes more sense that it timeshares with it... That's my only argument for iZombie here and Messengers on Wednesdays, otherwise I don't have a particular preference one way or the other, as long as both are on Tuesday and Wednesday
Why should ABC build their schedule around Shield? It's a serialized show that won't suddenly increase by much, it's not Scandal. I think that next year, they need to consider its renewal as it would be a 2 seasons renewal for syndication and decide if those ratings are worth it.
ReplyDeleteHell renew the show!
ReplyDeletescandal is hugely serialized tho...
ReplyDelete18-34 ratings per showbuzz daily:
ReplyDeleteNBC:
The Voice: 2.3
Marry Me: 1.7
About a Boy: 1.3
Chicago Fire: 1.3
CBS:
NCSI: 1.2
NCSI: NO: 1.1
POI: 0.8
FOX:
New Girl: 1.1
The Mindy Project: 1.0
ABC:
Selfie: 0.7
MLS: 0.6
AoS: 1.1
Forever: 0.7
CW:
Flash: 1.3
SPN: 0.9
Marry Me turns out to be the highest scripted show on adults 18-34, with a 73% retantion of The Voice's 18-34 demo.
The Flash still a huge winner for The CW, those demos (both 18-34 and 18-49) are on the levels of other broadcast shows.
Isn't iZombie supposed to be some sort of hip mystery comedy or something? I haven't read up. To be honest it sounds like a mess wherever it goes, but it doesn't seem like straightforward Arrow/Flash to me.
ReplyDeleteI guess the show could do better than SPN, but I'm not sure if they should just make a permanent move.
listen if the reason you think that shield, a marvel property that debuted with a 4.6 is somehow struggling now because it's up against a ten year old show on the cw.... well idk what to tell ya man
ReplyDeleteNBC's plans are furthered complicated because it has at least one really high priority, UKS from TIna Fey. If it decides MM is worth ordering more of, which it could easily do, where does it put it? Thursdays seem like a no go, Fridays are too low profile, Wednesdays might be an option but seems kind of pointless, especially if TMOL levels, Sundays seems silly given all of the event programming. I guess it could do Tuesdays, without looking at the calendar to see how the dates line up, but it would have to run MM through. Does it try to launch the show on Mondays? Probably not, but it's not that crazy of an idea, given the constraints it faces.
ReplyDeletegod i wish the over all viewers and 18-49 demo numbers would somewhat match :(
ReplyDeleteNot worried for Chicago Fire yet it's still high. But AOS worries me thou it's higher than last week
ReplyDeletebut Scandal has almost double Shield's ratings..
ReplyDeleteIt's the only thing working for them on Tuesdays and they have enough interests on the show to keep it around. So they might as well make the better use possible of it. Besides, this it the type of show that can be brought up by extreme promotion/ special stuff that they do (a la Frozen with OUAT).
ReplyDeleteTo put it in another way: if you prefer, don't say that they have to build Tuesdays around Shield. But they have to build Tuesdays. And I happen to think that this should be a male heaven for a more "male skewing" night or big events types of shows, since comedy is clearly not working on this night, they have no more reality to use and I don't think they can do away with 3 full female heavy skewing dramas (they are already barely doing away with 2). The fact that Shield, with all its franchise potential et all, already happens to be there, is an added bonus to this. And to be honest, that's what they should have done two years ago when they premiered their all new tuesday. They should have launched male skewing shows out of Shield (Big Thunder for instance) and premiered The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife on Wednesdays instead. It may be harder to do the rebranding now and the initial Shield halo is gone but they should still try it IMO.
I thought AOS was more self-contained.
ReplyDeleteI like Forever but I won't be sad to see it go.
ReplyDeleteit started out mostly freak of the week but it's pretty serialized now
ReplyDeleteAnother factor to consider: it skews male (I am pretty sure) and ABC, like most networks but perhaps even more so, needs such viewers. That and the fact that ABC owns it are working in its favor, and it would make sense to try to help the show. But how? There's no obvious time slot for it, and it doesn't mesh with much of anything on ABC's schedule.
ReplyDeleteI personally think they should get another Shonda show and move either Scandal or HTGAWM to Tuesdays. That could be their first step in fixing that day.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to ask you if you have twitter or tumblr so we can chat there.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be this emerging split between those older than 34 but younger than 54 and everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI think Wednesdays will eventually become the second comedy hour. I think Laura is cancelled at 13/ gets some kind of extension but not a full season order and they probably launch UKS there at midseason.
ReplyDeleteBut there are so many variables about NBC's schedule. I have no clue what they will do in the following hours:
- Monday at 8 and 9 during January and February
- Mondays at 10 during January and February (do they keep State of Affairs going sans the voice after just 6 episodes or so of exposure?)
- Tuesdays at 8 during January and February
- Tuesdays at 9 (do they keep the comedies going sans the voice after it ended so badly for Go On and premiere new comedies after the spring cycle of the voice or do they bring in new comedies to bridge these two) from January until May
- Wednesdays at 8 from January until May
- Thursdays at 8 from January until May
- Sundays as a whole from February until May (AD is going there but the rest is a question mark)
If AOS doesn't adjust up this might be series low right now I'm kinda of glad they are doing the marvel pop to pulp on Nov to see it just drop like this is devastating. MLS and selfie need to be canned
ReplyDeletelol in his updated post of the 18-49 and overall viewers Berman called SPN (1.0 - 2.20m) a loser. His continued hate for it is just hilarious
ReplyDeleteThat ten year old show still brings great ratings to The CW and shares the same audience as SHIELD.
ReplyDeleteI agree that that's another big advantage the show has. Exactly because there is no other place to put it it is why they should build a night that makes sense for it on Tuesdays. If there is no obvious timeslot for it, create one for it IMO.
ReplyDeleteIf NBC didn't have TV there, I'd say a move of ST would be a decent idea. But then, doesn't ABC have BTT, a spin off of sorts, on deck? Maybe a night of the DWTS results show, followed by BTT, followed by a drama would work.
ReplyDeleteI could kind of, sort of see it working on Sundays, except for the fact that it would probably need to go at 9:00, and that's directly up against TWD.
ReplyDeleteI highly disagree. They went to a lot of trouble establishing TGIT, I don't think they are going to break it. Besides, a lot of people feared that 3 Shonda shows were going to be overkill, so to make that 4 would be very risky and could damage all shows.
ReplyDeleteAgain, variety is needed on the schedule. Sunday and Thursday are already female-skewing drama nights from 8 to 11. Tuesdays need to be something else.
The DWTS results show was doing terribly in its last years on the night, ABC was right to remove it. In addition, when it did so, it managed to slow the decline of the Monday edition of the show, so it was a very positive move.
ReplyDeleteI agree that for this season, Beyond the Tank is the only feasible solution. I would do Beyond the Tank | Shield | The Whispers in the Spring. And they need to launch Beyond the Tank during the Winter when the voice is on hiatus to take advantage of that. If the show doesn't live up to the expectations, they can still try it on Fridays the next season after the parent show.
And football. And the FOX cartoons.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is room for another male skewing show on Sundays at all. I think it's already a miracle how all these three things manage to coexist. ABC has the right idea there going for the female skewing audience which should be more up for grabs.
So only half of POI's demo is 18-34. Intriguing.
ReplyDeleteIKR? I'd say Oh, Berman, never change, except it's blindingly obvious that he never will. He just can't get around retention numbers, so the fact that SPN will (likely) be one of the top three shows doesn't even penetrate.
ReplyDeleteShould we be worried about POI?
ReplyDeleteI don't worry about the periods when TV is off, because I think it makes sense to test to some degree, as it did with TB last year.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that, unless something like SOAffairs bombs right away, Sundays will be used for some of the dramas/event series. And boy, does NBC have a lot of them--Aquarius, Odyssey, The Slap, AD, and maybe even the Heroes reboot thing. Plus, Hannibal. If NBC doesn't go through with TB moving to Thursdays, what does it do with Allegiance? I guess it's good that Emerald City was cancelled, lol. You get the idea.
Given that it needs something, anything around which to build a comedy block, I can see it renewing MM pretty quickly. Hell, if BJ holds up again, maybe it'll renew that as well. But whatever the case, it something is working, and right now, it's basically one of those two shows as possibilities, I don't see NBC messing with it. And if that's the case, it makes scheduling that much harder.
My understanding is that it is a comics based show as well, though more on the veins of a procedural. But I could be wrong. I have never heard that it had a comedy vein. But I haven't been following it very closely either to be honest.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is that even if iZombie manages to pull the same numbers as Supernatural, I am pretty sure Supernatural would do better than Jane on Mondays and I also think The Originals would probably be able to gain a tenth or so from the pairing as well. So it would already be a win for the cw.
CBS is quietly having a very problematic season so no, I don't think so. But I think it's a shoe-in for a weekend night move. It's Friday or Sunday bound IMO.
ReplyDeleteThat would work. If AOS takes next fall off, or is even cancelled for some reason, I wouldn't hesitate to put it at 9:00, presumably out of the way of TV after a few weeks.
ReplyDeleteThe bigger question is whether BTT matches the ratings for the mothership. If not, but it doesn't do that much worse, put the mothership on Tuesdays and the spinoff on Fridays. In this example, I mean.
I don't think that many Shonda shows is a bad idea. My bigger issue with such a move is that it has the potential to disrupt Thursdays.
ReplyDeleteHow'd you get your cool avatar?
ReplyDeleteSuch a good description of what CBS is seeing. Nothing insanely terrible, like Fox, but it's in that middle ground between hanging on to previous successes and seeing them slowly go away.
ReplyDeleteWorse yet, it doesn't have as much on deck, especially in the way of dramas. Maybe it pulls up Zoo if things get really bad.
Yeah. It's almost as if ABC should order a pair of male skewing comedies from people like those behind :"It's Always Sunny..." and try to have them help AOS.
ReplyDeleteI don't seriously consider the possibility of them not moving The Blacklist. I think they will do it. My pet idea (risky one though but one that I seriously like) would be for them to do Heroes Reborn | The Blacklist | Allegiance on Thursdays. I think that would have enough flow and buzz to attract a lot of eyeballs. And honestly it's the only thing I could see working there. Comedies won't work against big bang theory and I don't think will help blacklist at all.
ReplyDeleteI would do something like this from January onwards:
Mondays:
Winter - The Apprentice | The Blacklist reruns
Spring - The Voice | State of Affairs (I would only launch State of Affairs in the Spring though... I don't like this November launch idea. It will launch out of the lower rated portion of the voice and then it will have either an hiatus or an apprentice lead-in after only 5 or 6 episodes. Launching it in the spring is cleaner IMO)
Tuesday
Winter - Hollywood Game Night | One Big Happy + Mr. Robinson (or Marry Me + Mr. Robinson if Marry Me is flopping at the end of the fall) | Chicago Fire (mixed with reruns)
Spring - The Voice | Marry Me or One Big Happy if Marry Me flops + About a Boy | Chicago Fire
Wednesday
Unbreakable Kimmy Smith + Mission Control | Law and Order SVU | Chicago PD
Thursday
Winter: Parks and Recreation (double pump) + Bad Judge + A to Z + Parenthood
Spring: Heroes Reborn | The Blacklist | Allegiance
Friday: Dateline + Grimm + Constantine
Sunday: AD + Aquarius + The Slap
Note: I've put the midseason comedies in sort of random places, they are interchangable between them. It's just that I have a hard time remembering which is which so I don't really know which ones would go better with each other but you get the idea.
That is good news, I still wish they kept the Elementary/Person Of Interest on Thursdays they were both benefiting from that.
ReplyDeleteWell agree to disagree then. I see more upside with building variety and focus on developing good event type of shows. They used to try them but the failures of V and Flashforward made them give up on them. I think it's time to try again.
ReplyDeleteI really don't see a scenario in which AOS takes the next fall off.
ReplyDeleteAs for BTT, I've also toyed with the idea of swapping it with Shark Tank but I am not sure if it would be worth the risk of messing up with Fridays without knowing its true potential. Tuesdays is already so low that it will for sure be an improvement on the hour, so it's a low risk, big reward type of move I would say. Moving Shark Tank? Big reward... but big risk type of move.
A show like B99 would be the best comedy leadin on broadcast I can think of for the show, but I am not even sure ABC would be able to market it properly. I truly think 3 hours of comedy is enough for them, they should do away with the Tuesday hour. It doesn't fit, it has a lot of competition on all fronts and it simply doesn't do well.
ReplyDeleteThe only other alternative is if they if they feel that they have a good enough development season on the family comedy landscape to allow them to expand the Wednesday block to here. But it would be very hard to get two of them right I think. Modern Families just don't show up in development like that every year.
At least MAOS was stable in this demo. But it should be up. So frustrating.
ReplyDeleteChicago Fire has won its timeslot every week this season. And it's close to syndication. No need to worry about it - it isn't getting cancelled.
ReplyDeleteHindsight is a tricky thing. At the time I thought it was a worthy move because I thought that POI would hold up better in the post NCISes slot and that sitcoms were worth investing on especially with big bang leading off the night. But right now, I feel like they regret it and that they spread themselves too thin in the sitcoms department while also hurting their dramas.
ReplyDelete
