Revenge - Season Finale - Execution - Review

13 May 2014

Yesterday was Revenge’s season three finale. Every year, the writers and cast have an epic episode in store to keep us on our toes and guessing during the summer hiatus. “Execution” wasn’t any different; it delivered a bomb after the other and was fueled by major character deaths, twists and lots of revenging (and succeeding! Which was what was mostly missing in the previous finales!). The episode was great, but there was just one bombshell that kind of ruined the Awesome, I was hoping for.

“All hail, the conquering hero.” - Nolan

Last week, in Revenge’s more than awesome penultimate episode, and what was probably Revenge’s finest moment yet, Emily finally managed to get Conrad to confess his involvement in flight 197. Even though Emily and her three men are savoring, their win over Conrad, they still have one dragon left to slay and it’s not going to be easy. After what seems like way too long, Victoria on her side, finally managed to uncover Amanda and Emily’s converging paths. This seemed a promise for some entertaining interactions between the two leading ladies.

“I wish my father was here to see this.” - Emily

A couple of episodes ago, the possibility of David still being alive, which I found ridiculous at the time (still do), was expressed by Charlotte after receiving letters from someone that claimed to be her father. As someone predicted at the time (Good job on that by the way), the letters were one (extremely unnecessarily) complicated way to get to Emily. Victoria was the one sending the letters knowing somehow they would eventually get back to her. I didn’t think Victoria was that kind of mother, deliberately playing with her daughter’s emotions (I genuinely thought, her kid’s well-being would come first) to get to Emily, but after “Execution” I recant that statement, nothing stops the Queen.

As Victoria predicted, after being presented with her father’s ring (David had given it to Victoria, right?) Emily needed to see the cabin for herself. Victoria thought that would be the best time to get a DNA sample (Really!?! No easier way?). I’m not even mad, because that led to an awesome fight sequence in which Emily (Of course!) was crowned victor.

Pushed to the extreme by Pascal’s sudden death and Emily’s involvement in it, Victoria swears revenge on her nemesis (even though she knows Conrad’s the one who pushed him.) I really tried, but I still can’t get into it, the whole Victoria and Pascal were madly in love plot. It just doesn’t sit well by me. Anyone with me on this one? The guy was around for what 10 episodes? For the first one or two, she was mad at him and wouldn’t even talk to him. Then he gave her an expensive dress and confessed his undying love and suddenly they’re soul mates? No. Anyhow, Victoria seeks vengeance on Emily for taking away her “one true love” which leads to some pretty disturbing scenes.

“Not until Emily Thorn feels the pain of this moment.” - Victoria

As I expected, Aiden was the first to die in this episode. (Since Barry Sloane’s new gig got picked up. Farewell Mister, and good luck!) When Emily decides Michelle Banks is the best way into Victoria’s involvement, in her father’s wrongful conviction, she sends Aiden to do the work, but Victoria is way ahead of them. After sipping some tea, and threatening the doctor with his scary eyes, Aiden is visited by the queen herself. This was the moment the episode turned around. Since poisoning Aiden and letting him die from it wasn’t visceral enough, Victoria poisons him only so he’d be paralysed while she smuggled the life out of him. I actually didn’t think she had it in her, to kill someone, herself.

“You really did pick the wrong girl to fall in love with.” - Victoria

Emily’s joy over her father’s exoneration is sort-lived (Very!) as she gets home and find the man he loves dead on her couch. The scene was really hard, and the expression on his face extremely disturbing. What cemented the fact that Victoria is somewhat of a psychopath, was her face hearing the cries and screams of her neighbor who had received her gift. Aiden’s death leaves Emily devastated (PS, Seriously, good job on extremely long and poignant close-up of grief stricken Emily.)

Emily isn’t one to mourn her losses by staying in bed for a week. She’s a do-er, and she wants Victoria to pay. After paying a visit to the disrespectful doctor and trying to convince Charlotte to unbury David (Only conning Victoria to the graveyard?), she goes to the cemetery and digs up Amanda’s grave. After they tell each other what they really think of each other (no white, socially acceptable, gloves necessary) Emily delivers on massive hit with her shovel. We all knew though, Emily was far more evolved than only burying her and I must say the denouement of this interaction was worth the wait. Having Victoria at the asylum is such a better fate than having her in jail.

“She’s Amanda Clarke! She’s Amanda Clarke!” - Victoria

Daniel is still in Nolan’s crosshairs (Remember Nolan’s awesome war declaration?) and he requests the help of Margaux’s brother Gideon. I’m really sorry for Daniel because he really isn’t very bright. Even after realizing his boss’s little brother wanted to get him in trouble, he still fell head first into it. Gideon manages to get Daniel passed-out drunk and gets a dead girl in his bed.(Anyone understand the how?) Gideon’s bat-shit crazy, I like him. (As long as he’s on Nolan’s side)

Money really does open every door. The second, more unexpected death was Conrad. I’m actually more saddened by his death (or probable death, what is death really in show like this?) than Aiden’s. I just loved the character they built for him this season. Following his confession, and with bail denied Conrad finds himself in jail where his best option is life in prison. The officer assigned to his area is Officer Mostrovski (he’s still Bellick for me!) so you just know he’s a dirt d-bag. Dressed as a Father, Conrad easily manages to flee the prison where his transport is to pick him up further away. How awesome the scene with him singing as he walked up the road? I will miss Henry Czerny if Conrad really is dead.

When the car makes it to Conrad, you know something is wrong, but I thought he would be getting shot. I was wrong, I cursed when the hooded David Clarke stepped out of the van and stabbed him. I am actually still hoping Conrad imagined his aggressor as David Clarke out of repressed guilt. The fact that he is alive makes absolutely no sense to me. The fact that he’s a killer seems to contradict everything we think we know about him.

“Only the truth is, the man that you remember as your father and the man I knew are very different.” –Victoria

  1. I'm kinda hoping for David to have a twin brother we were unaware of. No kidding. It would be better than him being alive.

    Great review!
I understand your reservations on David Clarke, but that's because we only have seen him through Emily's eyes. After what he's been through, he is probably a much darker man now, and I'm really eager to see his backstory next season. Don't write him out until we know what part he plays in the next season!
Victoria on the mental insititution was absolutely perfect, golden moment, and a great way to end the season. I've never liked an scene as much as that one

I'm anxious to know what the writers are planning. It can be a really good season if they do it right. There are tons of paths they can follow after that finale; and hopefully they'll pick one of the right ones.

  4. Aiden and Conrad were two of the best characters. Even though Conrad was an asshole, he was great and entertaining.... I wish they`d kept him at least. Also, they could`ve killed Jack instead of Aiden... Or Charlotte....

    ReplyDelete
  5. The fact that Jack dosnt even get mentioned in the review shows the ridiculousness of that scene with Charlotte. He has his own unique way of TOUCHING people? Call off CSI. No need for DNA or Evidence. We can prove anything via TOUCHING someone now.

    It was that ridiculous.

  6. Totally agree. We're supposed to believe that David somehow faked his death in prison and let Emily rot in Juvy all those years? C'mon. Some speculate that Emily has know this whole time - that would be completely inconsistent with all the three previous seasons. If he is alive I hope it's handled better than Emily's mother's resurrection. Remember that was a four-episode disaster after much fanfare.

  7. Yeah, it's Sophie's choice: either you make Emily's revenge pointless (which would ultimately mean your show is ridiculous, cause it's freaking called revenge) or you screw up your own storytelling by making people believe, at this point in the story, that David escaped prison, never looked for his daughter, and decided NOW was a good time to come back to the Hamptons.
As I said, evil twin brother sounds good enough to me.

    Exactly what I thought.
They have nothing on him, absolutely nothing to tie him to Charlotte's kidnapping. He'll be out in 5 minutes.
(Or not, sometimes they're frustrating like that!)

I still have hope for Conrad! Haha! No one with me on that one?
I wouldn't have minded Charlotte gone because of the ridiculous plotline I feel like the kidnapping is going to take, but I can't say I'm really sad Aiden's gone!

Guess I'll have to wait before bitching about David Clarke's return ;)

I'm sticking with my hallucinations until furthur notice.
If he really is they better have known from the very start they would be bringing him back and have everything neatly tied up!

  12. AnnSophieHamel13 May 2014 at 04:53

    Thanks!
My reservations are mostly about how they will possibly explain him not knowing his daughter was living hell all these years and not helping her. I don't feel it can be explained unless we scrap everything we think we knew about him and assume he really wasn't that good of person. I really hope they do though because I really want to continue watching!

Do you like the fact that he came back after more than 20 years? I feel like its: okay, I let my daughter do all the hard work, now that I'm an innocent man I can stab a knife in Conrad Grayson and get back to my life.

  13. David has returned among the people in Arcadia, and now he seeks revenge! Good way to crossover your Sunday line-up, ABC!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ann: I thought she searched his car and found stuff too though. Anyway, as far as his character having any real presence in the finale of the season, he was barely there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Honestly, at this point I half expect him to be guilty of everything the writers claimed him to be innocent or he was not really free this whole time. But barring that I see him being as bad as Conrad just without his resources.

  16. It was an amazing episode, bat shi* crazy, one of the best of Revenge. ANd personally I am intrigued by the David storyline.

Only technically, David had the same resources as Emily. He's the one that gave her the money (sort of), he's he one that introduced her and Nolan and he,s the one that told her about Takeda,s Ninja Academy.

Actually, I'm looking forward to know if David Clarke is the biggest son of a bitch in the history of ever or if he was held in the shadows for some reason. It can work or it can fall apart, but I'm sure eager to know how it will play out! Revenge writers are known for delivering surprising and turning some of the most stupid plot into delightful stories so I'll be waiting to see what happens

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm still sad about Aiden :( It really shocked me that it was Victoria who actually killed him. Davids return is strange. Maybe he killed Conrad, because he thinks that Conrad had killed his daughter. I really can't believe that he knew all the time about what Emily was doing... Also, if the spoilers about season 4 are real and it will be Victoria doing the revenge against Emily I dont think I'll be able to watch this show any longer. All Victoria deserve is to rot in that mental hospital forever, for sure not revenge, not after what she did to Aiden, and before to Emily and David.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope Conrad isn't really dead, but he looked pretty dead... hahaha I really liked Aiden... I'll miss him !

    ReplyDelete
  22. Agreed ! She doesn't get to be revengy !

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep related to touching again. Charlotte's finger are a powerful source of evidence... Absurd

    ReplyDelete
  24. One thing that's really annoying me is that Grayson was convicted after Emily kidnapped Charlotte then bugged her, couldn't she have just done that in the first episode of season one?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I always thought that David Clarke was alive, and Nolan was his
accomplice because he was the one who gave the infinity box to Emily aka
Amanda. DC used his daughter to get Revenge on the Graysons. For me he
is more devious than Conrad. He also stole Grayson Global fund with
Nolan's help; he boned Conrad's wife, and so on. Yes! David Clarke has
never be a saint, and he will never be.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hallucination is a good idea as well. Anything that means David is in fact dead is good :P Because I highly highly highly doubt they have planned for him to be alive from the beginning. If that is the case, I will apologize for all of my comments, I promise, but I just can't believe that was their end game.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Basically it comes down to Jack is basically not integral to the story anymore. He has for lack of a better term become the Male Charlotte

    ReplyDelete
  28. Me too I won't be watching either if its about victorias revenge. It just wouldn't make.sense

    ReplyDelete
  29. AnnSophieHamel14 May 2014 at 05:39

Since you always seem to have it spot on, I'll side with you! Except for Nolan being one of the bad guys, don't think I could stomach that!

    ReplyDelete
  30. AnnSophieHamel14 May 2014 at 05:42

I think... take it or leave it
That in season 1, Charlotte wasn't the kind of person that would stand up to her father even in face of the evidence. She grown (arguably) since then and it was her standing up to Conrad that sent him over the edge which is along the lines of something Emily said 2 episodes ago.

    Makes sense?

  31. AnnSophieHamel14 May 2014 at 05:43

    That's low! :P

  32. heh.. yeah after I posted that I felt a twinge of remorse... then touched someone and they knew I felt it too.

They bring in Margaux to spice things up for Jack and then .. well Im not even sure whats happening with those two.

  33. Hi, truly loved this episode and the two previous to this. What I love more about your review is the line "He is still Bellick for me" ROFL. I never post on forums but this very line made me do so. The moment I saw Bellick in uniform I started laughing (:

Anyways I need to correct you. Daid Clarke did not return after 20 years. He had died (apparently) a week before Emily got out of Juvenile. Which means even if he was alive and confided somewhere, he didnt remain "silent" and "selfish" while she "rotted"in juve. WHen she was rotting Juve, he too was in jail. In 1992 or 1993 when he was sent to prison she was 9 years old but when he died she was 18. So He just spent the last few years in hiding.

The twin brother idea is ridiculuous. I dont buy it. BUT again you are wrong (I mean to say it politely, not in a bad manner, because i love your reviews :) ) if you say that the writers NOW thought of bringing back David . Nopes. After season one , the writers and the cast came on this show and when the anchor person asked if there is a possibility that DC might still be alive (which made me jump as I never thought about it) the writers did ahem ahem and giggled and they said we might as well do that but we wont be commenting etc and Emily, Daniel Victoria etc started laughing, it was a cute show. So it was on their mind ever since thus they never showed us his dead body.

An evil twin bro might seem possible though as Jack ruled out the Charlotte-theory that DC might still be alive saying that he was stabbed in front of hundred of inmates. But he might be speaking for the fans as the writers knew that the first thing we would say after finale will be exactly this so it was their way of letting us know that "Yeah we know that too" :D

I was always Team Jack and I never even liked Aiden but I dont know why but from the first scene in this episode I suddenly liked him, though I had no idea he was gonna die, I didnt even bother to pay attention to the title Execution, I dont know why but he looked so good in this episode and the way he was murdered was so heartbreaking.

Looking forward to your reply (:

  34. For me, this would have been the perfect series finale. Conrad dead, Victoria in mental institution. Also I prefer if Conrad would rot in jail for the rest of his life. But it's easy to break him out of there, as we've seen.

I have mixed feelings about David being alive. It can be an interesting plot, but there are too many holes in it. If he really is alive, does he have any idea what his daughter went through to clear his name? If he does - how can you let your child suffer like that? In that case he isn't any better than Conrad. If he doesn't now that Emily is indeed Amanda, thats a different story then.

Daniel got what was coming for him. I thought he will die in the finale, but he writers decided to frame him. Gideon turned out more thoughtfull than I expected.

As for Aiden, I never really liked him. But saw that coming a long time, especially after 3x21.

    Jacks arrest seems just stupid.

The last scene was the best. Victoria deserves it. When I just started watching the show I always blamed Conrad for everything, but Victoria is as much evil as he is. They made each other like that.

I will watch the first episode for sure and decide after that. Season 4 should be the last, no rebooting.

Thanks for the review, AnnSophieHamel. And sorry for any possible mistakes :)

  35. Hey im sooooo happy to receive your reply, guess my face actually glowed. haha.

Yes you are right. Maybe David still thinks vicky was all that gooood girl n he will still fall for her as he loves her so i think at one point Ems n David will be like 'clash of the titans'. Lol for Bellick. haha. Remember when Michael said, "I dont like ypu, i certainly do not respect you!" haha
Do you write any reviews on Suits? I soooo love Harvey n wanna know if you ever blessed them with your words ;)))

    ReplyDelete
  36. Can you please clear four things for me?

1- Why didn't Emily use Michelle Banks before? If she had had "Michelle Banks leverage", why wouldn't she have used it? I can't remember, what had she done to Michelle in Season1?

2- Emily isn't relative of Victoria so how could she put Victoria in the mental institute so easily? If the Institution(along with the doctors) belongs to Emily, it's OK but otherwise it's nonsense.

3- What did Daniel tell Margaux about Pascal? She wanted to know everything about her father but how can Daniel know about Pascal's background?

4- Why did Emily think that (after fighting Victoria's man)Victoria must have sent her man to get Emily's DNA sample? Isn't it weird for her to think that (Because she's so smart)? It's very easy for Victoria to get DNA sample of her so why would she bother " all the cottage thing"?

    ReplyDelete
  37. AnnSophieHamel16 May 2014 at 02:27

I do not in fact remember that line exactly, but it's been a while since I've watched Prison Break!

For your second question, I only wrote reviews for Revenge, Homeland and Castle, and to be frank I don't think I'd have the time for any more ;) I didn't watch Suits, but is friend also recommended watching it so maybe I'll fill my hiatus TV viewing with it! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. AnnSophieHamel16 May 2014 at 02:34

For the first one, I really have no idea, maybe she was waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it... I also thought it was weird to just shove her character back in. In season 1, if I recall, Emily kidnapped her and let her in a shipping container for I don't know how long. She also leaked the taping of her privileged clients who then banned her from the Hamptons, or something along the lines of.

I really have am no expert in procedure but, if someone is a danger to himself or someone else, they can be committed to the hospital against there will if I think more than 1 professional deem it necessary.

Daniel knows all about flight 197 and his parents involvement. I can't remember, but didn't Conrad tell him Pascal was also involved a couple episodes ago?

For the winning number 4 question, I had the exact same question. It seemed like a whole lot of trouble for a simple DNA test. Maybe she had an ulterior motive that we'll discover later on. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I also thought that IF Emily was waiting the exoneration of her father to use her "Michelle Banks Leverage" but this doesn't fit in the story because she tried to frame Victoria in "the boat event." before. I remember her kidnapping but after that case, how could she continue to be a psycholog ( or psychiatrist)? The authorities should have banned her from being a doctor and taken her license. Apart from these, I also thought that maybe Emily had the idea (of using her to put Victoria in the mental institution) out of the blue. We need more clarification for this part obviously or we're missing something :)

Secondly, as far as I understand, the cottage had two aims (What do you think?):
1- To write letters (with DC's handwriting- by the way how is it possible? That's another thing :) ) to Charlotte and with this way, to test if Emily will go to the cottage or not. If she goes, Victoria can prove her thesis about Emily's being the real Amanda.

2-Maybe, to get DNA sample was a secondary (collateral) aim. Victoria thought that when Emily went there, her man could have her DNA sample, "which is the extra benefit of Emily's trip to the cottage".

By the way, the doctor in the mental institution seemed not to know Emily but I think that if the mental institution belongs to the Emily, this would be a perfect way to get rid of Victory. Why? Because no one can find Victoria there. Emily can change her name and records so even the government can't understand the fraud because everything looks "formal". In fact, the institution functions as a dungeon for Victoria in this way. BUT if that place is an ordinary institution, with Daniel's help, Victoria walks out of there in 2 episodes next season. Right? :)

  40. AnnSophieHamel17 May 2014 at 17:44

Your ma'am seriously cracked me up!

The only show I can think of along the lines of the ones you've mentioned is The Americans, it's really good!

    I can't believe you don't Lost! Haha!
Other shows I liked Castle (Obviously), Chuck (not that believable, but not fantastic, really funny also), Dexter (the earlier seasons were amazing), House (if you like medical drama)

    ReplyDelete
  41. AnnSophieHamel17 May 2014 at 17:49

Michelle Banks didn't loose her license, I don't think it's illegal to tape the meetings. She only got banned from practicing in the Hamptons! I also think her end game wasn't the mental institution for Victoria, and she though about it when her prison plan fell through... she sat on the leverage until she knew what to do with it, I guess...

The cottage story must have something we missed, maybe it's going to be connected with the real David Clarke in a way, I really have no idea... But I'm sure they'll explain it somehow.

I have no idea how they'll keep her into the institution. Your right they it has to be a special institution if they want to keep her in there. Do you think Daniel is intelligent enough to get her out of there? He always makes me laugh with his stupidity ever episode!

    ReplyDelete
  42. AnnSophieHamel18 May 2014 at 03:03

Just had an ideo on how they can keep Victoria in the mad house. Tell me what you think, I know it's not why they they did it, but Gideon and Nolan have something huge over Daniel's head, maybe big enough for him to do nothing about his mother being intitutionalized????
