The Walking Dead - Episode 4.13 - 'Alone' Preview

9 Mar 2014

The Walking Dead’s upcoming episode Alone, which first airs in the US on Sunday night, explores questions centered around what has proven to be the biggest threat our group faces – and that is people. The episode tackles two big questions that have been raised around this issue in past episodes. One – is it better to better to keep hope, even if that comes with risk? The second – are there still good people left?

We follow a couple of small groups – a good number to do justice to the show’s themes while keeping the story moving. There are twists, some terrifying moments, and of course plenty of walkers to kill. This was a solid episode that I really enjoyed. If comparing it against the rest of the season, I would rate it probably somewhere in the middle in terms of quality – which is pretty awesome because this season has set a very high bar.

One of the things I particularly appreciated was a deeper look at Bob and Sasha. Those two characters have remained mostly unexplored up until this point, and I really enjoyed getting to know them better and seeing their relationship deepen. Their conversation continues along the thread that they started earlier – whether they should be striving for more than to survive just to survive. Both actors Sonequa Martin-Green and Lawrence Gilliard Jr. deliver strong performances and succeed in further rounding out their characters.

Here are few teases to leave you with:
- One member of our group makes a surprising alliance
- There’s an event that happens that has the potential to be a major turning point for a character
- There’s a romantic moment
- A new everyday object is turned into a zombie-killing weapon

Alone airs Sunday, March 9 at 9 pm, on AMC in the US, and on Monday, March 10 at 9 pm, on Fox and Fox HD in the UK.

  1. Thanks for the teasers! Already looking forward to tomorrow!

I'm trying to think of an everyday object that has not been used yet. lol

  2. Haha. Yeah, that wasn't much of teaser because that happens every episode!

Anyone else thinks, that very little has happened in terms of plot advancement during the last 4 hours of TWD? I mean, we're halway through the season 4B, and so far, the only notable thing has been the introduction of Abraham. I have a feeling that Scott Gimple is trying very hard to recapture the magic that was "Clear", but so far he hasn't been succesful....

  4. I disagree, I love all these episodes that allow us to get to know the characters better. Been some excellent insights into the characters.

I'm not saying that the episodes were bad, but the balance between plot advancement and character development (which I don't think was as succesful, as the writers probably wanted it to be) should be better. Furthermore, some shows (Breaking bad is the first that comes to mind) can do both at once.

  6. You bring up a good discussion point. While I felt this episode coming up was well paced and moved some things along, I thought there could have been some aggressive editing with last week's episode. I'm torn on this because with this show, the character arcs in many ways ARE the plot, more so than whether the group is at the prison fighting the governor, or at Terminus, or whatever comes next. I'll probably have more to say on this as we get closer to the end of the season because it's too hard to put it in perspective yet.

  7. I'm so glad the teasers did not include someone dying.

  8. I'm confirming nor denying nothing regarding major spoilers, but yeah, we need a break from the death.

  9. If anyone wants to know the answers to the teasers: Daryl joins the marauders that were in the house with Rick, Beth is kidnapped by a mysterious man at the cemetery and Bob kisses Sasha.

Overall the episode sounds just as turgid as the rest of this godawful season, albeit not quite so terrible as last week.

  10. Yes. A bottle of wine last time.

  11. Just from my own perspective, I very much agree that the separate character arcs essentially ARE meant to be the "plot." Much as in early situational horror/suspense precursors like Blair Witch, what's going on (whether it be "witch is lurking in woods and students get lost filming documentary" or "zombies are running amok and survivors try to prevail") certainly provides crucial tone and motivation. But for me, it's merely the secondary catalyst for what (I feel) are the real, central questions:
    1) How does this situation impact/change different characters?
    2) How does that, in turn, change the character dynamic as a whole?

Personally, I much prefer TWD when it focuses on the human drama arising from the zombie attacks, supply runs, cannibal threats, road trips, etc. that form a backdrop of horror, excitement, and tension. Just my own opinion.

  12. I think someone does get bit but not killed. I'll leave it at that.

  13. As someone who also have watched the episode. Lauren Cohan really delivers also in the episode, much more than the actress who play Sasha. This episode also made me like Bob Stookey a heck more.

  14. He is indeed the heart of the show. It bothers me too (a lot) and many other people, because TWD is, at its core Rick's journey. Each episode without him feels somewhat empty and automatically decreases my interest.

Explore all the characters you want, but don't ignore Rick completely for so many episodes - 4.10, 4.12 and 4.13. I also suspect that he wont be in 4.14 as well. Four episodes of the back 8 completely bereft of Rick - that is unforgivable.

  15. How do people get to watch and review the episode a couple days early??? What link do I go to so I can watch episodes a early???

  16. The networks send sites like SpoilerTV review copies of the episodes. They are not available to the public.

  17. I think there was more than just one notable thing that happened in 3b...Carol's return, psycho girl reveal, we met those e guy from group of freaks in "rick's" house, we are gonna see them again. At least one of them.

  18. I kinda like Bob so I'm looking forward to seeing more about him. I hope we get a few more answers to questions from 4a though, all I'm really seeing are more questions being presented.

  19. No not at all... Its a totally different style right now, just as the actors said it would be. It may seem slower, and I guess technically it is, but look at the time thats passed in 4B as opposed to pretty much any other season. Its been mere days since the prison fell, and all this has happened. From what Im hearing about this episode things will pick up a bit to your liking - they've done a lot of character development like last weeks episode but this one should have a bit more action
