POLL : What did you think of The Musketeers - The Challenge?

  1. Great to see D'Artagnan finally get into the Musketeers, and learn a lesson or two. Though why he can't see something is up with what Constance has said to him I don't know, the idjit?! Constance stole the episode for me, superb performance throughout I thought. She shows a lot more maturity than D'artagnan so I think it's best that she acted the way she did really, he's too much of a hothead still and would act that way if told at the moment in my opinion. He'd need to be introduced to it more slowly maybe. I wonder how it will go from here, will her husband make it to the end of the season or not?

Oh, and King Louis still gets some of the best lines in this show week after week even when he only has a couple of scenes, lol.

  2. Phew, I'm glad D'artagnan didn't get into the carriage with Milady, as I did expect him too for a moment there.... Poor Constance though, I was totally surprised about her husband finding out this early on and I'm glad I wasn't spoiled about that particularly plot point. Regardless of whether D'artagnan and Constance become a couple by series end or not, I hope this little misunderstanding is sorting out by then.
Good episode, lots of drama for D'artagnan (which is what I wanted ) a nice little subplot for Porthos, and even Milady being under suspicion by the Cardinal was a 'nice' surprise. Vinnie Jones will never be a great actor but he was an intimidating figure.

  3. Yeah, I think D'Artagnan redeemed himself in the 'ship' by not getting in the carriage in my eyes, if he had I would have lost interest completely in the whole thing, lol. I hope he works out that something is up though, surely he must realise that something has changed her point her view for her so suddenly, He can be a bit selfish as he's so young still maybe, and doesn't think about others points of view maybe?

I'm enjoying Milady branching out, her and Athos still have chemistry there don't they, it was an interesting little scene I thought. And yes, the Cardinal may not be able to control her as much as he'd hoped after all, could be interesting later in the season.

  4. Agreed I thought at least the boy has sense not to get into the carriage , can't see the wood's for the tree's when it comes to Constance but he will get there. I loved the subplot with Porthos , you knew it would not work but it was nice to see him and Alice together even for a short time.

I enjoyed the scene between Athos and Milady as short as it was it told so much and do agree you can feel the attraction between them.
I also enjoyed Athos tutoring D'Artagnan or at least trying to get him to think with his head and not just with his emotions.

  5. Yeah, I was a bit surprised D'artagnan didn't suspect anything regarding Constance's sudden change of behaviour but I suppose he's meant to be young, still a bit selfish and perhaps wouldn't suspect anything regarding Mr B. I'm definitely curious as to whether Constance will escape this marriage by the end of the series or whether she's destined to stare at D'artagnan from a distance for much of series 2.
I love Athos and Milady, you know they'll never get back together - she's a cold blooded killer, who simply did have room in her heart for Athos - but that doesn't mean their sexual tension has disappeared.

  6. It was a very tightly written plot around Athos and D'Artagnan wasn't it, the relationship has come a bit late on but has worked for me totally. They are very alike, the generation gap was completely sold by the actors for me :)

  7. It's a hard one to call isn't it, we know the Cardinal won't be around in Season 2 but Milady could easily take over that threat, and be far more effective in carrying out any order to kill/harm D'Artagnan, than he could anyway. There's more drama in keeping them apart, but I don't really want too much time spent on angst if I'm honest, I'd be happier if it just ran til the end of the season I think, lol.
Milady certainly has come into her own these last two episodes hasn't she, I'm really starting to enjoy her journey.

I loved this episode, very emotional and there was a loooot of action as well ! The sparing scenes between our four main guys were awesome.
I loved the little encounter between Athos and Milady, the scene was really... interesting. Milady really is a mysterious character. I can't decide what her motivations truly are. Does she wants to take revenge on Athos ? To manipulate the men in her life ? I "fear" for her, the Cardinal was really threatening. We can see him being violent with her in the promo for episode 9. I can't wait to see what's going to happen. Plus, at the end, the fact that d'Artagnan didn't accept her invitation might have made her doubt about her powers of seduction...
My heart aches for Constance. I really like her character. This episode was very harsh for her. First the 30 livres, and then her husband ordering her to lie to d'Aratagnan. The last scene with them was heartbreaking. And I wasn't expecting to become emotional with these two lol. But what a stupid idea to kiss your lover in the middle of the street ! ... Anyway... I'm a little sad. I don't know how they will continue this story until the end of the season. I really fear for Constance's life...
The other characters were really good as well. First, Treville was my hero this week. Choosing to fight against Labarge for the safety of his men, and without justifying his actions ! Why do those musketeers have to be so full of honor ? I'm glad he didn't died. I was litteraly hiding my face behind my hands during the duel. I was ridiculous.
King Louis made me laugh. Again. It has became a habit. I am reaaaaally looking forward to see his part in the next episode. Will he fear for Anne's life ? I think so =D
Porthos was cute, but I don't really see the point of introducing a new character like Alice, if it's for saying goodbye to her as
soon as we're starting to like her. Maybe we'll see her again. Aramis' behaviour didn't bothered me at all. Ok, he wasn't respecting that widow, but he picked the one with the 3 lovers (and the 4 annoying dogs). I actually laughed at his comments. Is it bad ? I might be blinded by something.
I loved this episode and I can't wait to read your preview for the next one, I found the promo really exciting.

  9. I really enjoyed this episode! I agree, Constance stole the show. I think she gets better every episode...Tamla Kari is doing an outstanding job. I think it is nice that a lady is becoming a fan favorite in a show about men. Did NOT see that plot twist coming...good job, Sandi, in keeping that quiet! While I appreciate the drama, it made me quite sad. Like others, I might have been really turned off if d'Artagnan got into the coach with Milady. The fact that he didn't made the ending much better for me, even if poor Constance thinks he did! I thought Bonacieux might be a bit more deviously involved...due to his rather silly job of spying, I wonder if he will make to season 2 after all. I hope that d'Artagnan finds out the truth about Constance even in if they aren't together at the end. Makes me sad! But a good sad in a way...at least it was written well and provided much drama with the promise of more to come. They were put together and then wrenched apart so suddenly...makes it all the more upsetting.

I really am curious about Athos and Milady....is there a possibility that she could be "redeemed" in his eyes? I also think that she could be a major villain next season without the cardinal's interference. Based on the episode 10 promo pics, I'm not sure how she could survive capture or arrest...Either way, I enjoyed her much more this episode. She has gotten better for me as at first I did not enjoy her as much. She is becoming very fun to watch.

Looking forward to next week with Anne and Aramis! Poor Anne looks quite like a child in the promo! =) Can't wait to see how that story develops. I will need a bit of romance and adventure after this episode...not sure I can take any more of poor Constance crying...=(

  10. In his defense, he had quite a rough few days. Maybe after some time away defending the queen in a covent full of gun toting nuns, he will realize that something is up with poor Constance.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh, no....don't go fearing for her life! Then I will fear for her life...!! That would be a really brave move on the writers part to kill her off in the first season. Especially after making her endearing as a character and then getting viewers emotionally invested so suddenly in her relationship with d'Artagnan and current predicament. They could do it...she did die in the book after all. How tragic that would be...not just for d'Artagnan but for us as an audience.

I was worried for Treville too! I thought the others might step up and fight out of revenge for his death or something. I am also interested to see Louis' reaction to Anne next week. That is one confusing relationship...

    ReplyDelete
  12. As much as I love all the characters I am quickly developing a soft spot for the King. He's hilarious. His irreverence is delivered always with such childish fun.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I also agreed with you about Alice. I was just starting to warm to her and Porthos and then they wrote her off. Kind of like Ninon from last week. Curious if we will see either one of them again. Both have promise. It was good to see another side of Porthos. =)

  14. As others have mentioned already, I think D'Artagnan had a LOT on his plate to deal with all at once. He lost his farm. He couldn't pay his rent. He was broke. He also had a big contest to win. And the list goes on. Plus, I think he's a really emotional guy. I think it stung him a lot when Constance said that she didn't love him (we know she was lying, but he doesn't know that as she hasn't said ILY to him yet). I think this was an emotional episode for both D'Artagnan and Constance. They broke down quite a few times. I think Luke and Tamla did outstanding acting work here. So both of them were the stars of this episode. When D'Artagnan become a musketeer, the tears on his face. Wow. When Constance broke down after she told D'Artagnan off, it really hurt to see that. And also, D'Artagnan crying during his break up with Constance really got to me.

I was on twitter and tumblr, and a lot of fans were really sad about D'Artagnan and Constance's quick split. I think fans were expecting at least 1 full episode with happy scenes for them. So it was a bit of a shock to have it happen so soon. Anyway, I HOPE by episode 10, the truth is finally out.

I do wish Constance would have told D'Artagnan the whole truth. She should have found a way to do so as his life could still be at risk. And that would save all the misunderstanding and pain. But it's a tv show. And I guess it can't be a show without angst and drama!

    ReplyDelete
  15. You have a good point about D'artagnan's insecurities and Constance playing on those insecurities to convince him that she didn't love him. He did have a lot going on in his head during the episode and was becoming over-emotional as a result - the fact that he nearly died at the hands of Vinnie Jones's character was evidence for that, it was only Athos's timely arrival that saved him.

I have to say though, both he and Constance needed smacking on the head with a newspaper for kissing in public ( she's having an affair ) and for kissing in the house when her husband is around.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Treville's concern for his men was great, as was him finally allowing D'artagnan to prove himself. I have to admit though, whenever he and D'artagnan are sharing a scene, I keep thinking of when one of Hugo Speers previous characters killed one of Luke Pasqualino's previous characters with a baseball bat - in the tv show Skins in 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I know, I'm repeating myself, but I still don't feel Mylady. I don't know why, but I always stop paying attention as soon as she turns up on screen.
I liked the episode, but it felt like they added a lot of stuff to fill the time, so that what was a fairly simple story would be enough for a whole episode.
Count me in as liking the king more and more. He might be weak, but he is trying, isn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Porthas / Alice storyline felt a bit like filler, even though there were some sweet scenes between them.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Loved this episode even though there was not as much Aramis as we usually get. Finally d'Artagnan is a musketeer. I think they took the right amount of time to make that happen.

I was so sad with everything that happened with him and Constance. They're my favorite couple in the show and I had hoped we'd get an episode with them happy :(
On a side note, how stupid was that kiss in the middle of the street! You're married Constance. Remember?

I actually liked the Porthos storyline even if it ended so fast. Alice was nice.

I'm loving the King which I did not expect. He's not really made to be King but he's so nice and funny.

Treville also had a nice part in this episode. I wasn't really worried about him. Then again we don't really know yet whether Musketeers is the kind of show to kill off a main character so I can't say who's safe and who's not.

I'm still not liking Milady except for her scenes with Athos. The whole thing with d'Artagnan didn't really convince me in their first encounter and still hasn't.

Looking forward to some Aramis/Anne in the next one.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree, good points about insecurities! That also works for Constance too...she was obviously very insecure regarding Milady, yet she pushed d'Artagnan towards her and is left to think that he got in the carriage.

It had a bit of a Moulin Rouge quality to it, didn't it? Christian: "Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love." We all know how that turned out....=\

I'm not sure how this is going to tie together for episode ten. It doesn't look like Constance will be in episode nine. Will a love sick and detached d'Artagnan save her just to turn her back over to her husband which will carry the drama forward in series 2? Or will he somehow find out the truth and go rushing to save Constance "before it's too late." Hhmm...not sure how she will be in trouble with Milady in the first place. No one besides her husband knows about the affair; why would he tell Milady?? Hhmm....

    ReplyDelete
  21. I tried to keep some of it secret still while teasing parts of it, I think it's better to see some of it unfold by itself on screen rather than be totally spoiled in many ways. I like the way it played out over the episode, it wasn't rushed and felt natural to me, but yes, very sad that they haven't had long together.

I don't see Athos ever forgiving Milady as he won't be able to get over her past, he's such a stubborn man, but I do wonder if he would be able to end her life? He obviously still has a lot of feelings for her still, even though he wishes that he didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes! I love Louis, his comic timing is brilliant and he has become a firm favourite of mine :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, Constance knew exactly what to say to D'Artagnan to get him to back off didn't she, she's a very clever lady, wise beyond her years there :( I think that maybe if she hadn't seen Milady's carriage draw up and then thought that he'd got in it she would have thought of a way round the situation she is in without her husband knowing But now I fear she is filled with insecurities too, due to thinking the rich and unattached Milady being able to give D'Artagnan all she feels can't, while she's back in the unloved relationship with her husband filled with despair and not many options left open to her :(

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agreed, neither were careful enough about their affair at all, they were incredible silly on that front! lol

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love how both Athos and D'Artagnan turned down her in this episode, yet she told the Cardinal that her powers of persuasion are legendary, I have a feeling that this will only make her a more dangerous foe!

I wasn't expecting to feel so much for Constance and D'Artagnan either, especially after how episode 7 ended, but the twists and turns in this episode were very pleasing and changed my mind completely on them. I don't want it to drag on for too much longer though, I hope that it resolves itself in episode 10 either way, but I really can't guess what will happen at this point. She or her husband could die, or the Cardinal leaving could alter things, or Milady could throw a spanner in the works, or any number of other options. Just when we think we know quite a bit about the next two episodes, we realise that we don't at all XD

Treville was a hero wasn't he, Hugo Speer actually had a fractured shoulder during the filming of that scene, which makes the actor a blooming hero too in my book :D I'm glad the wooing of the women wasn't a problem, I saw on twitter that some had problems with it, but I feel that it was at least better than it was in the books (Porthos' patroness there is still married and he guilt trips her for money in a much worse manner!). I think it was obvious from the way they talked in the church that the women knew what the score was, they enjoyed the dalliance with Musketeers and treated it as such. French court had a certain reputation back then anyway, I don't think that it was anything shocking at all, if anything it was pretty tame compared to real history.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's almost like Anne is Louis' mother as much as she is his wife at times doesn't it, a very confusing relationship indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. They are having great success with their female guest cast, more so than with their male ones imo. Adele, Flea, Agnes, Ninon, Alice, I feel they are all more memorable.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm really warming to Milady, it's taken me a while, probably due to her being absent for so long and I feel that she's been even more underused than the Cardinal. There really hasn't been a great deal of threat from either of them throughout the season, which is a shame imo.

Love Louis though, Gage is just a delight, I just know every scene he is in I am going to enjoy :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. The lack of Aramis was the only real downside for me too, but I'm hoping that is down to him having a larger role in ep 9. I'm impatiently waiting for it to be tomorrow so I can get hold of the preview version and get my Santigo fix, lol. I'm very interested to see how far they will take this relationship with Anne, and how much the Cardinal is pushing this Spanish Count's daughter onto Louis.

I liked the Porthos/Alice story too, it's a much nicer patroness plot for him than in the book, he is rather mean to his (married) mistress in it and doesn't come off as well as he does in this episode imo. I think it also helped as a mirror to the Constance/D'Artagnan love story/break up in some ways, as did the Athos & Milady relationship reminder.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LuckyNumberSLVN17 March 2014 at 16:06

He had a fractured shoulder ?! Oh :(

Concerning Aramis and Porthos' "fishing", yes, it was definitely worst in the books. Porthos mistress was an older women, wasn't she ? I don't recall exactly. Anyway, in the show, they made it clear that the women were ok with the whole situation, glancing back at the two of them in the church and all. Maybe not Alice at first, but she falls in love with Porthos so the whole romance stays "honest". As for Aramis, his "patroness" seemed fulfilled to say the least. Anyway. Their "adventure" this week made me laugh =D

    ReplyDelete
  31. Gage is indeed a delight and it appears Louis is very worried about Anne in the next episode. He may not love her as a husband should but he probably cares for her deeply all the same. Whilst I like the chemistry between Anne and Aramis, a part of me hopes things don't go any further than looks of attraction and maybe a brief kiss between them, though I do wonder if Anne's inability to conceive an heir ( which is probably Louis's fault rather than Anne's ) will give the writers an excuse to take their relationship to controversial heights - Constance might be a married woman but Anne is a married woman AND the Queen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Constance isn't listed in the credits for episode 9 ( on the BBC website ) so she's not in the episode at all, which I'm not surprised about because it appears most of the episode takes place in or near a convent.

"Will a love sick and detached d'Artagnan save her just to turn her back over to her husband - which will carry the drama forward in series 2 - or will he somehow find out the truth and go rushing to save Constance before it's too late?"

Now that's a question I want answering. At the very least, I hope D'artagnan realises by the series end that Constance still loves him, even if she has to stay with her husband. Having said that, the producers wouldn't have known for sure they'd get a second series at the time of filming and I wouldn't have thought they'd want Constance stuck with a boring ( and now bitter ) husband, had series 2 never happened. So, I'm now 50/50 about whether D'artagnan and Constance get to be together by the series end.

    ReplyDelete
  33. LuckyNumberSLVN17 March 2014 at 16:33

I need my fix too, That sneak peak didn't help eaither. I can't wait (you are so lucky...)

And I thought that the young lady the King was meeting was German. Is she Spanish ? That would be weird considering the Cardinal doesn't like the Spanish very much, he considers them as France's ennemies, doesn't he ? I have a doubt now...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I saw a tweet from the publicist about Hugo's shoulder, what a trouper he is to have done that fight!

Yes, Aramis' beau seemed very happy ;) Thou, I think he was a little harsh towards Porthos at the tournament about him falling for Alice, his teasing could have been a bit more jovial maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Haha, I can see tomorrows preview being a hard one to write without giving too much away :p XD

I have faith in you : You'll find a way to satisfy our curiosity (as always) without revealing the main plot (as always), giving us in the meantime your opinion about... whatever is going to happen on particular matters in episode 9, aptly named "Knight takes Queen".

  37. Maybe I'll just do two paragraphs about Aramis fishing and then round it off with one about King Louis' funny lines :D lol

  40. We can rule out constance dying because the executive producer recently tweeted 'they still have a LONG road ahead of them' referring to constance and d'artagnan. But possibly her husband could die...

    ReplyDelete
  41. No no I wouldnt worry about constance dying because the executive producer recently tweeted a fan who had said they were sad about the whole constance and d'artagnan situation and she said, "dont be sad...they still have a LONG road ahead of them"

    ReplyDelete
  42. Haha im so sorry, ive just realised that ive been commenting here, there and everywhere and youre very kindly jumping to and from each article to respond! Thank you for taking the time! And sorry again I just get so overexcited with all these theories! :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. No worries at all, there's so many little bits of information it's completely understandable, especially after last nights episode and all that happened in it :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hhhhmmm, well that's good....? It could mean that this drama could last through series two. Not that I don't appreciate drama. I'm just not sure that I can take much more of Constance upset...Tamla Kari has done an amazing job at making her such an endearing character.

I'm beginning to wonder if Milady is the one that tells d'Artagnan the truth about the break with Constance. That information coupled with her life at risk would be a huge incentive to save her...not sure. I could see d'Artagnan being even more determined to save Constance after learning the truth...just not sure how he is going to learn it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I hope D'artagnan and Constance are together by the end of series 2 at the latest, I really don't want their 'unresolved romantic tension' dragging on indefinitely - which some producers love doing - especially if there's no garantee that we'll get a third series. I find long running dramas unsatisfying if they don't have a solid and good ending but instead appear to end abruptly, which was the case with Merlin in my view - 5 whole series of Arthur being unaware of Merlin's magic powers ( not even suspecting what was going on ) only for him to find out as he's dying during the last 20 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Haha I know! Obviously I would love them to acually be together by the end of series one but even if they get back to the way they were, id be happy with that!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thats a really good theory too! Ah there are so many I don't know were to begin! I think they would probably resolve this particular situation at the end of this series just because at the time they didnt know if they would have a series two so they would have to give a potential satisfying ending.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ugh, Season 5 of Merlin was mishandled pretty badly re the magic wasn't it, and Gwen got over her kidnap/murdering ordeal far too easily too! I just don't know if D'Artagnan and Constance will be together, or if they will go more along the line of the books and have them apart but friends who feel an attraction for the end of this season. I don't think they will end it on too sour a note as they didn't have season 2 commissioned by that point, but that is only guess work on my part. Like you, I do hope that this little drama is at least sorted out by the end of episode 10.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hhhmm. I don't know. Did they know if Capaldi wasn't returning by the end of filming? Bonacieux's threat doesn't really stand anymore without him...That could come into play if they knew to write that in somehow in episode ten...maybe?

I wonder though...episode nine will greatly promote the Aramis/Anne relationship. Is it too much to have two forbidden/married affairs going on full force in series 2? Maybe Constance and d'Artagnan will get some resolution so that Aramis and Anne take center stage in that regard? Or....episode nine could put that relationship to rest, but I really doubt that will happen. =)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I just thought you would be interested in this particular article from an interview with tamla. She says she is excited to work with luke again in series 2. Confirming constance doesnt die! Haha I was worried myself at first!

    ReplyDelete
  51. There's likely a ton I could say about this episode, but, basics:

This is really the first time d'Artagnan came across to me as a truly three dimensional character. There have been glimmers in previous episodes but mostly not. Not enough for me, anyway. I just hadn't connected with the character or his ambiguous motivations. This episode got me there.

Also, they let him become the champion for the Musketeers without making him a Marty Stu - which was a huge bonus for me. They kept him real, and young, and ernest, and really put him on that journey in a way that had me rooting for him (though there were times I wanted to smack him upside the head).

I loved his reaction to getting his pauldron/shoulder guard. And, for whatever reason, I loved his reactions/facial expressions when he was sparring with Aramis - especially at the end where he was all pleased and holding up his knife like - "Ha, I got my knife back" - all proud of himself. Made me laugh.

Ultimately, Aramis did feel a little out of character. But nothing that threw me into a tizzy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. There's a lot of things I don't actually like about the characters in the book. (Beyond Porthos manipulating his mistress, I remember when I first read the book as a youngin' I was so, so very uncomfortable with how Athos treated his servant). To be honest I'm glad the show has chosen to take some characteristics and leave others.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Aramis paragraph is obligatory now, so...

    ReplyDelete
  54. They were very young when they got married. There's a brother/sister vibe, a mother/son vibe. The actors do play their parts very well though in portraying all that nuance, with humor and gravity.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Exactly. lol

If you're going to actually have an affair, at least don't be total idiots about it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agreed, I have really come to enjoy their take on the roles and much prefer them to how they are portrayed in the books. They seem to have become firm fan favourites over the last couple of weeks especially.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh yes, the servants, beating them until they obey your every word was how you indoctrinated them too :s terrible!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Totally agree on your D'Artagnan summation, he was annoyingly young/reckless at times but that actually helped sell the character as believable to me.
