Together we can save BATB

#Save BATB – Talk Show Appearances – Get BATB on Wendy Williams
This is the week we focus on getting BATB on the Wendy Williams show!

I know a talk show that is hip, popping, geared to our exact demo. It also has a large devoted audience as well as a lovable and outspoken host. I’m talking about The Wendy Williams Show. Did you know the show airs in over 52 countries around the world? Did you also know that Ms. Wendy is a sucker for an underdog? If we manage this, it would be a huge deal.

I'm not stopping there either, if successful, I plan on doing it all over again to get BATB on The Talk, The View and Kelly & Michael.

Want to join us? For more information on how to participate please visit my blog.

We’re going to need a whole lot of beasties to make it work so please spread this across all the social media platforms you can think of (Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Get Glue, etc.).

Don't sit around wishing you could make a difference, get involved!

Time to beast up and roar louder than ever before!

The Recap and Review

Title: Redemption | Written by: John A. Norris | Directed by: Grant Harvey

Synopsis: VINCENT SEES WHAT HIS LIFE COULD HAVE BEEN — When some of Gabe’s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) acquaintances go missing, Cat (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) must come together to save them. Vincent ends up returning to the hospital where he was an intern, allowing him to see what his life could have been.
=======================================================================================================
My thought on this week’s writer…

I was underwhelmed with everything in the script for this episode. Whether it was the atrocious dialog, the numerous plot holes or the shirking of canon and continuity everything was lackluster and damn near unforgivable. Thank goodness the cast and Jay Ryan most all, rose above it or this episode would have been a complete an utter disaster.

My thoughts on this week’s director…

Not much to say about our new director Grant Harvey. This episode did not differentiate itself from any other and that is meant in the most neutral of ways. The lighting was better but if only because we were able to get quite a few scenes out in the open and during the day time.
=======================================================================================================
Cat – What the hell happened to Cat? I really don’t recognize her at all. There is zero passion in the kisses with Gabe. She is never truly there 100% in the scenes where it is just her and Gabe. What was the point of Cat and Gabe getting together? Was it to make Cat look, weak and desperate? How clingy and desperate? Or perhaps it was just to showcase how fickle she can be? The best things about Cat are her passion for job and how it allows her to help people, caring about those around her, her inner strength and her independent nature. None of that has been present for quite some time. With Vincent back on track and ripe for a truly meaningful and poignant turn to being worthy it is now Cat who doesn’t even seem fit to even be with Gabe. Cat has become that high maintenance friend that literally goes from hot mess in her life to the next and I’m exhausted. Can we please bring back Heather to smack some sense back into Cat and make her deal with everything that has happened to her?

Gabe – Did anyone else want Gabe to get injected and to become a beast again? This episode absolutely and unabashedly confirms that Gabe is NOT the bad guy and he is also still NOT a beast. I must say that is a shame. Gabe would make the most perfect and compelling long running villain for the series. Gabe finally showed his true colors and let go of the St. Gabe act. Yes, he is bothered by the constant presence of Vincent in his life as well as Vincent’s constant pull on Cat. He sees it, he knows he can’t stop it but yet he gave her an ultimatum that will undoubtedly not end well for him. I like that Gabe wanted to help and tried to help. I’m glad the writers were fortuitous enough to see that Gabe needed to be shown as vulnerable and human and not perfect. I also like how they highlighted the inverse of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde conundrum in comparison to Vincent. I really feel like the writers have made the case to Gabe at face value and painfully underscored the fact that he’s a good guy. But no matter how you slice it Cat and Gabe have no business being together, it is squicky, messy and highly implausible and my logical side just can’t let that go.

JT – Enough with the pep talks! It feels like JT is over compensating and I for one feel like there is no need for that. I really would love for some more emotional depth to be discovered in JT’s character as well him getting a life and moving on. Austin Basis manages to get the best lines of the night and steals every scene he’s in and this episode was no exception but I just wish the bromance was depicted in a more realistic manner at times. If anything, can they have a bro’s night out and get away from the topic of beasts for just one night? Cat and Tess got to do it, it’s only fair. I’m just really tired of JT (and especially Tess) being cheerleaders for the wrong things. JT should be encouraging Vincent to embrace his humanity and find the things that make him happy outside of Cat.

JTnT – Literally, a three sentence conversation and nothing more. It was implicitly implied that they got a room and were going to get physically intimate. This is the funny thing, Vincent more than likely knows and Cat doesn’t. I hate that the boys on the show have a better relationship than the gals. Mainly because Cat’s life is one big dramatic misstep after the next that we can never get to know what’s going on with Tess. There better be a whole lot of JTnT development in the next two episodes.

Sam Landon – Yep, he really is the big bad. There is no Barnes. He’s an evil genius out for revenge. Is anyone really buying Sam as an evil master mind? This whole thing with Sam has caused so many messy mistakes; I literally just can’t talk about it. I love Tom Scott Everett but his acting choices are dreadful and ridiculous. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, an epic story needs an epic villain. I don’t feel threatened or intimidated by him and the fact that he keeps slipping away only makes Cat and company look like freaking idiots. I can’t wait for this storyline to be over with.

Tess – Once again the character of Tess was not given much to do. But at least she looked pretty, so there’s that. I take that back she was the voice of reason in the coffee shop. I agree it’s odd that Gabe just smiled politely and kept the weekend going. [Insert my prerequisite ‘Poor, Nina’ comment here.] Man, we were promised to have this character fleshed out this season and I feel cheated.

Vincent – There’s my hero. Color me smitten as kitten and drunk in love with Vincent once more. He was so perfect this episode. Jay Ryan smashed the emotional range and rose above the abysmal dialog that was in the script at times. He’s begun to give Vincent some much needed lightness that has been missing. It so odd that Vincent is the more relatable one and not Cat but it works. *I see the writers have heard the fan girl complaints about not enough shirtless!Vincent and corrected it. Either that or Stephen Amell’s abs contract is up and all the other males on the CW can start baring their chests as well. Either way I’m happy.

VinCat – Hmmm, the fundamental flaw of VinCat’s relationship got a bright spotlight put on it in this episode. Cat sees and treats Vincent as a means to an end whether it is professionally or personally. Usually we don’t notice because it’s done in such a nice loving way that it gets glossed over and we have some epic VinCat moment to soften the blow and often forget about it. Vincent, well, he thinks that the fundamental problem of their relationship is that he is a beast, especially now this season, what with the mindless killing, ditching Cat for Tori because of some primal, excuse me, “beastly” needs, etc.

Grade: C-

Awards

Character of the Night
• Vincent, wow, two weeks in a row. Good on you writers but now is the time to start fixing Cat. Can anyone remember the last time I said she was my character of the night? What was it six episodes ago?

Best Character Interactions
• JT and Vincent
• Vincent and his mentor, Dr. Marcus

Line of the Night
JT: It’s hard to be Dr. Jekyll when everyone wants Mr. Hyde

Favorite Moments
1. A shirtless Vincent on the rowing machine.
2. Vincent falling right back into being a doctor with such ease.
3. Vincent comforting Jacob Sutter’s wife.
4. Gabe in casual attire (c’mon don’t hate, Sendhil is beautiful and the suits cover up too much).
5. This is like the third time we’ve got JT in suit.

Favorite Scenes
1. Vincent’s dream about Cat wanting to get back together.
2. Vincent and JT talk about the old Vincent and what could have been.
3. Vincent saving Jacob Sutter’s life
4. Cat visits Bob
5. Cat tells Tess she called Gabe by Vincent’s name

Repeated Elements
• The orphanage
• JT pep talks
• Beasts don’t get better they only get worse
• the theme of ‘Man or Beast?’

Biggest Surprise of the Episode
• Cat’s dream sequence about killing Vincent.
• Bookend dream sequences.
• Agent Reynolds/Bad Bio Dad makes an appearance

Theme
• When it comes to getting what you want the means always justifies the ends.

Grievances List
• There are just truly too many to list. I’ve opted to focus on the good from here on out (for the most part). All I can say is all I see are plot holes for miles and my intelligence is under attack.

Burning Questions
1. So are we supposed to forget about the gem?
2. Is it just me or has the myth arc as well as continuity gone completely out the window.

WTF Moments
• Cat and Gabe’s lackluster on screen kisses.
• Cat’s cold and callous demeanor when it came to Vincent this week.
• No follow through on the huge leap forward with the JT and Tess that occurred last week.
• They phoned in the fight/action scenes.

Side Note: In case anyone is wondering, the title for this review is a play on the title of John Green’s novel ‘An Abundance of Katherines’. It is an awesome book that you should totally read while BATB is on hiatus. Actually, all of his books are awesome and The Fault in Our Stars is now a movie, so I’ll just leave that there for you to mull over.

  1. Thanks for this review!! I'm getting really tired and bored with Gabe/Cat relationship! Jay brilliant as always! JT line of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde made my night! Hahaha. I just don't get the writers! Cat is sooooo out of character! She doesn't want V beast when he tries to save Tori or himself but she's all into beast mode to save Evan or Gabe?? And after that ultimatum from Gabe she went to bed with him?? I remember when V said to her the same thing about Gabe and her reaction was totally different, and V had a very good reason!! But now......

  2. I really loved the episode! In my opinion, I think the 'lackluster kisses' between Cat and Gabe are merely for the Beasties' benefit. Besides, it shows that Catherine is not into Gabe as much as she thinks. I wouldn't lose the BIG BAD theory about Gabe; I think he might not be the BIG BAD dealing with Sam or anything, but his true colors (hence the possessiveness towards the end of the episode) is starting to show. Gabe used to be a beast; Catherine knows (or should know) that Gabe should understand Vincent more than anyone. The fact that he doesn't will open the door for Catherine to walk out of during the next episode.

I also don't mind the JT pep talks; I think right now, as Vincent finds his humanity, the pep talks are important. JT has a lot of insight on Vincent and Catherine's past relationship and is there for Vincent to talk to when he's struggling. In my opinion, if Vincent didn't have JT as a support system, there's almost no way he'd ever regain his humanity back. JT is as human as any of the characters can get; he doesn't fight or kick ass like the other characters (save for the occasional bat appearance), and has the biggest heart. He understands Vincent's feelings more than anyone (at this point), and is really Vincent's rock at this point.

Catherine is merely rebounding--she may not think she is, but she totally is. I don't see her as needy or desperate. I just think she's confused. Or, was waiting for either Vincent or someone else (JT) to tell her that V still loves her.

By the way, IMO, "Redemption" was more of a stepping stone episode. It is setting up for what's going to happen in two weeks when Vincent decides to fight for Catherine and win her back. Also, it sets up the mean-Gabe sequence too. I honestly think Gabe is bad. From season 1, he has been a selfish dude.... He may have been 'trying' to redeem himself for the past part of S2, but old habits die hard.

He wanted to be more human, so he tries to kill Vincent in S1.

(Ironically, he got his wish without the beastly perks)

Now, he wants Catherine to think of him and only him.

I don't think he's going to just let Catherine go when she chooses Vincent.

Based on the promo for 215, I think Gabe is going to try something... perhaps even arrange to have V & C hit by that van. It wouldn't be the first time for a mean and nasty to 'befriend the good guys' in order to exploit their weaknesses. (I call this pulling a Ruby. See SPN S4 as reference)

I can see where you are coming from, but that doesn't mean I agree. lol

    Sorry for the babble!!! ^_^

  3. Thank you for the review, I personally loved this episode. I agree with you on the Gabe/Catherine relationship but I also think Gabe is pushing her back in to Vincent's arms but tell her that he needs to go....we have seen Catherine go code yellow before on being told what to do. Jay is brilliant and that tear running down his face in Cat's dream....I held my breath. Look forward to next episode

  4. Lilith, you absolutely nailed it. And you managed to resume all my thoughts - and I believe many others - into one phrase: "All I can say is all I see are plot holes for miles and my intelligence is under attack."

And the “writers” were complaining yesterday beasties were not trending “fast enough”. Seriously? I wanted to reply back saying, “Well, give us something to be truly excited about and you will see us trending all night long.” Because unfortunately right now you have to be a “die hard” fan - like us apparently - to be able stomach this hot mess. And yes, thank goodness for Jay/Vincent and Austin/JT. They’re real life-savers.

  5. Personally, I hate dream sequences, and they had 2 in this episode. So that's what I didn't like about this episode.

I'm so glad that Gabe is starting to be mean and possessive because I really really miss bad Gabe. As awful as that sounds.... and I honestly think that Gabe is still the bad guy but the writers are trying to throw us off.

I'm kind of getting tired of the JT pep talks too but at the same time it makes me like his character more because what he has to say is always spot-on.

Jay Ryan rocked it. So nice to see season 1 Vincent.

Cat is annoying me lately.... but it's just because she's on the brink of a freakin mental breakdown (at least I would be if I were in her shoes....)

Can't wait for the next episode!

  6. Nailed it again; Will the real Catherine Chandler please show up in ep 15? I'm seriously beginning to wonder if she's been secretly kidnapped and brainwashed. I almost fell out of my chair when Gabe laid down the law to Cat that Vincent had to go and she said nothing and then they cut to her in bed with him. Can you imagine Cat from last year calmly going to bed with Vincent if he bossed her around like that? This has been seen earlier this year when she was so desperate for Vincent to remember their epic love - but that passed quickly enough for our favourite fickle cop.

Someone else pointed out that last year when Vincent told Cat to stay away from Gabe (because he didn't trust him) she walked out on Vincent after getting in his face and telling him "you don't get to tell me who I can and cannot see". Where is that Cat - perhaps the real Cat is in the Murfield Lab somewhere? She even went on to invite Gabe to her mother's celestial birthday knowing Vincent was a) jealous of Gabe b) sensed something was off/untrustworthy about his agenda yet invite him she did even when it was to something she couldn't include Vincent.

Thee hypocrisy of Cat's moral compass is off the charts - seems Vincent's beast is bad and what he does as beast is too terrible for words but Gabe is the good kind of beast - he only kidnapped Cat and tried to kill Vincent. But heck, he's a hell of a guy this year so he gets far more latitude for his behaviour. My only guess is this shows Cat really has no deep feelings for Gabe or she would have gone ape sh## over his behaviour the past 2 episodes.

I also loved JT - he's a great coach and Vincent needs it - so do Beasties. Dr Jekyl & Mr Hyde - absolutely loved it - line of the night for sure. A lot of fans have been down on Vincent this season, but looking back over season 1 & 2 I think it maybe more that isn't "worthy" of Vincent - she used him to save Evan, ignored his worries/feelings about Gabe and ultimately made him a beast again. Season 2 after a few desperate "love me - we're an epic love" she turns her back on him because she judges him (which she never does to Gabe) shoots him and then is using him to resolve the mystery, Sam and protect Gabe. Phew... I think its a good thing that there's a week off between episodes as I'm getting more frustrated with what the writers have done to the development of the independent Cat - not!

This is what is so frustrating with this season - yes its darker, less procedural and supposed to have everyone figure out "who am I" but in Cat's case I think its "where is she?" Likewise with Tess, last year she took no prisoners but this year they've turned her into a Gabe cheerleader - Tess last year wouldn't have pushed Cat to get into bed with Gabe but take the time to get over Vincent. I still think that the focus on the character of Gabe investing in his role in the show (goodness sake his name is before Austin & Nina in the opening credits) has greatly detracted from the original 4 stars and I hope the Gabe show is about done so we can get a 3rd season.

  7. Great review! Did Cat actually move in with Gabe????because he commented on her being quiet on the drive home. Home???? I'm gagging just at the thought of them sharing a bed not to mention the cringes when they kissed. Pissed me off when they had their arms around each other in front of Vincent....that was so insensitive knowing that Vincent and Catherine were once a couple. I felt sorry for Gabe when he begged Sam not to inject him. This should have made him more sympathetic to Vincent's plight but I guess not. I'm glad Vincent has JT but also think he needs his family. The tear running down Vincent's face in the last scene wow!!! Right until that moment i thought it was real and Catherine was finally coming to her senses. Oh well can't wait until next episode.

  8. Thank You for the review. Really appreciate it :)
I think Cat is the one who is actually STILL suffering. i understand her situation. her mom died, her father died, she found Vincent, Loved Him, Supported him, than her bio dad came, heather left, her bio dad was the one trying to kill Vincent.. vincent forgot about her, he became a monster who even hurt her, he lied to her, Catherine fought for him till the end/Begged him, Tori Came,Evan Died, Vincent was so mean to her.... After all she's Human Nobody is perfect and she's a woman. She still loves Vincent she's just confused right now. and we all know in the end she'll only choose Vincent. Cat was sleeping with Gabe but she dreamed about Vincent. Cat was with Gabe but she was worrying about Vincent J.T Called and the first question she asked was "Where is Vincent?" she was sorry that she asked Vincent to help. Gabe said Vincent is a beast but she said "You don't really believe that" she was shocked. on the other hand The Old Vincent is back Cat brought him back now Vincent will bring the old Cat back. i still think Gabe is the Bad Guy. he is using everyone. Cat/bio dad scenes are always Brilliant. J.T is really imp. in both Vincent and Cat's lives. He can put some sense into them. and Kristin Kreuk is AMAZING. she's one hell of a actress. she can do whatever the writers want her to do. For me she wins again in this ep. she was angry with her dad, guilty because she asked Vincent for help, Scared by her nightmare C'mon her facial expressions are to die for and she was Happy when Vincent showed his human side again :) we should Give her credit :)

  9. Thanks again for the honest and to the point, no beating around the bush, not being scared to say what you really feel for fear of being called not a "True Beastie". I find it really disheartening that this whole season was suppose to be these arcs of character development. Even with the hurry up we are going on hiatus issue, I am really having a hard time finding that character development in anyone this season; oh wait! There is Prince Gabe! And I find it funny that all the people who kept saying this is season 2 not season 1 and stop comparing are now wanting the Old Vincent from season 1 and the old Cat from Season 1-pretty well everyone has had their character destroyed and there is no going back! Tess is like the energizer bunny saying Go Gabe; Go Gabe; Cat has become her alter ego and only uses Vincent to get what she wants while telling him he needs to be a human man; JT is the usual JT but we have really seen less than half of him this season; and Vincent is getting a little bit of development by becoming guess what THE OLD VINCENT!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Vincent FTW!! Deserves Character of the Week for sure. He's been the Star of Season 2 for me hands down.
Cat O Cat ~ wherefore art thou sweet girl? OK I SMH at the people who moan and say they want old Vincent back but helll I want old Cat back now.
GaG ~ RME ~ just die already. I did not sign up for the Ex Beast Show. I don't see his return so far pulling up the ratings. In fact quite the opposite I would say ~ the unwelcome excessive PDA from him and Catnip has made him my No. 1 Villain on BatB. He may not be a bad guy at this stage as he is obviously too much of a wuss BUT that's not saying he won't turn on VinCat when he ultimately gets the boot from Cat. Otherwise he is redundant and I'll be ecstatic to see the last of him sooner rather than later.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Vincent has treated Cat like crap from the beginning, ditching her every time a better prospect came along, pushing her away, and disregarding her choices. And yet she kept coming back to him to the detriment of her job and her relationships with her friends and family. I don't see how anything she's doing is out of character.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you for your review.
For me the highlight of the episode was Vincent all the way. His character development is simply amazing and never fails to deliver top notch performance. Amazing actor with the ability to portray emotions effortlessly and beautifully.

JT of course Vincent sidekick who always has his back is always a delight to watch. We need more screen time with these two!!
Shame we didn't get JT + Tess moments. Would have been great to see their relationship develop more from last week.
As for Cat-Gabe enough already. I still think Gabe is the big baddie. Didn't trust him in S1, don't trust him now. We already saw a glimpse of his true self at the end of the episode....the nerve telling Cat Vincent has to go, HE needs to bloody go. We've had enough of him to last us a lifetime.

  13. Thanks for a brilliant review Lilith. And thanks to Jay Ryan for making this episode worth watching. And I am not talking about his abs. Actually if Kern thinks we love Jay´s portrait of Vincent because of his looks he is sorely mistaken. Jay Ryan transcends the problems of the script and the plot(s) and owns the scene with his intense and unforgettable acting. Jay Ryan is the only reason I am still watching and will continue to watch BATB.
I don´t really want to write about Gabe´s character. It has become a farce (hopefully unintentional). Gabe not the bad guy? What is up with his whining and begging for mercy when he is afraid? His domination, suspicions and ultimatum in his relation with Cath? That is a classic way of setting him up for a revelation as a bad guy. Or the writers are just making fools of us. And you are so right, Lilith. No one enjoys being insulted. In fact we pay it back.
The difference between the characters of Vincent and Gabe is made obvious by the writers. When Cath is worried about her shooting Jacob, Vincent understands with just a glance what her problem is, they discuss it at length and he supports and comforts her. Next scene Gabe says she looks worried and asks curtly "About?" She pours her heart out to him about feeling bad about her shooting Jacob and asking Vincent for help. Gabe is just interested that she mentions Vincent, he gives her no comfort about the shooting at all, just demands about Vincent.

Lilith, you hit the nail on the head again with your review, and I absolutley agree with almost everything that was said in the previous comments!

    Some additional remarks:
Vincat: I’m not sure if it was meant to be on purpose, but Cat’s hypocrisy this week reached new levels. She rejects Vincent for his beast side, but finds nothing wrong in using him as her tracking dog whenever it suits her. Granted, right at the end she seemed to feel a bit guilty, but I doubt it will be addressed again.

The writers clearly don’t know what they want, they don’t apply the same standards to Vincent and Gabe: does being a beast make someone evil because it’s in their DNA or were their wrong doings per own choice?

You’re absolutely right about Vincent: If he wants to regain his humanity, he’s got to do it first and foremost for himself, not for anyone else (by the look of the preview JT might tell him so next episode)

I always thought the inconsistency in dialogue was one of season 1’s weakest points and had hoped the almost complete replacement of the writing staff in season 2 was an effort by the network/CBS to improve dialogue quality. Oh, how I wished now to have the season one writers back ! Could the dialogue get more superficial and repetitive? And what is it with the overuse of certain words?
I made a tally sheet last episode: the word “beast” was said exactly 38 times!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Complete Stranger19 February 2014 at 09:55

Agree with every word! You said it perfectly.
It clearly shows that the new writers/producers in charge are not in tie with last season and failed to understand what made season 1 so special. For some time I still had hope they could manage a turn around, but it only got worse. My frustration is exactly the same as yours!

  16. Thanks for your review, I loved the episode. Catherine's relationship with Gabe is lack luster because she is trying to rationalize it. Her heart wants Vincent, she's trying to work it out in her head. Her heart wants what her heart wants and that's Vincent, always has been. In the next episode "Catch Me If You Can" she will stop fighting her heart and choose Vincent. Jay Ryan as always knocks it right out of the park, he is amazingly talented and can give any well known famous actor a run for his money. He's always brilliant!! Once Gabe is out of the picture, Vincent and Catherine, JT and Tess will be front and center as it should be.

  17. Judging by nexts weeks preview, it looks like your wish about JT and his pep talks will come true. :)

Honestly, I have only watched this ep once and I’ve already forgotten most of it. Sad really, when I’ve watched every ep from S1 like 10 times and I could give a detailed description of each ep right now off the top of my head. So I guess that says I found this ep neither here nor there. While I wouldn’t say it was bad, it wasn’t great, especially in comparision to S1. But for S2 standards it’s a step in the right direction. I can see the build up to VinCat, so that’s a plus, I just wish we weren’t so far into the season. IMO, I think they should have started the season out with ep 5 and mixed the first 4 in around now, skipping the Gabe and Cat romance all-together. Then we could have had a nice slow burn to a VinCat reunion. Know what I mean?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Totally agree Danik with everything you said. I , too , could recite verbatim almost all of season 1 episodes but not season 2. I too have thought that the season arcs this year would have been way better received if they were shorter. In one of the interviews, the first 8 episodes were suppose to be Vincent, then Cat and then I assume the last 6 would be the two together or coming back together. So far, at 215 it has taken Vincent this long to get to where he is and Cat hasn't even started. I am really quite confused! And it would have been totally understandable for Cat to find herself, without being defined by a man which is what the showrunner said she was with Vincent; so then the best course of action would have been to make her strong, like in season 1, without a man-but instead they did the opposite and now Gabe is running her life. It is too bad because the basis for the season is a good one-it just hasn't been presented in a meaningful, believable, realistic way and all the other elements like the mythology etc that are good story lines are getting so intertwined and confusing, I am not sure where we are at with any of it anymore.

  19. I would love for JT to get his own story back too! JT is starting to be like Tess to Cat; just there to support Vincent in his quest for Cat. Last year JT had his own life; he taught at the college which I am not sure where that is now because he is always in the Gentlemen's Club. All of the main characters had their own lives-apart from CAT/Vincent and this year none of them do and I miss that! Even if Tess's relationship with Joe was a bad one, we at least saw Tess as her own person. I am not too sure how I feel about the JT/T pairing but at least it gave a different dimension to the two of them other than Tess on Team CAT/GABE or JT on Team V/C.

  20. Great, recap as always Thanks for keep saying it like you mean it, they're isn't much I can add, only too agree is where the hell is Catherine Chandler, I miss that strong no nonsense lady, I loved JT & of course JR killed it again he is the only remaining constant of this show, oh yea and screw Gabe, continued support of you and hopefully the show!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree. Pairing her with Gabe weakened her character. While I like Gabe, he was a much better addition to the cast in S1 than in S2. They've reduced him to a love struck puppy when in S1 he was smart, whitty, edgy, and just had a presence about him. They have loosely skirted around the mythology and focused on a romance between V/Tori or Cat/Gabe, neither of which the audience wants to see, wasting valuable time. When are we going to find out about Cat's past? What about the gem? Who's this aunt and how is she relevant? ...so many questions that would actually interest me enough to swallow VinCat's separation. But, I'm in it for the long haul, through the good and the bad.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I hear you, and I feel a little betrayed too. S1 was flawed, but beautifully so. S2 is kinda like a slap in the face. I think these other relationships and angst between them would be easier to sit through had VinCat not had so many beautiful moments in S1. But even though those moments are tarnished for me now, I do have hope they will give us new ones. And I know, with the clock ticking, things will likely be more rushed than I would like, but that’s something I’m willing to live with. I’m glad your not giving up on the show completely (even though the new powers-that-be have done nothing to deserve the fans loyalty IMO) because I do think it will come around. It just sucks that they’ve wasted so many eps.

  23. Another amazing review. And I agree 100%. This season should be called "Where am I?", not "Who am I?". Someone on CW took way too many wrong executive decisions. Setting up the show for failure airing the episodes on Sundays (Canada) and Mondays (US) was just one of them. The directors/producers decided to brainwash the characters and start a whole new show, without following a basic rule: "never change a winning team".

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you for your review. I agree that JR is the character of the week and actually the entire season 2. He is brilliant in his portrayal of Vincent. Whatever they have done to Catherine is intolerable. I don't understand the point of making her psychotic and delusional. Her demanding Vincent do her bidding and be her beast when she needs him, but then she hates him for it.
Her mental instability was palpable after the talk with her father. Although I hope it is a red herring, it seems she is convincing herself that she needs to kill beasts, especially Vincent. She said it at least three times during the episode. And you know she is completely gullible to other's demands. It appears she is going to become what she hated most about Vincent, on missions to kill beasts.
I found it interesting that Gabe says "home" but Catherine doesn't have a key. She has to knock on the door and wait for him to let her in. A far cry from her always entering the warehouse, the gentlemen's club, and Vincent's boat any time she wished. Vincent was always free to come and go from her apartment too. It was such a comforting and touching part of their relationship. Even now after they have broken up, she comes to his boat and he to her apartment.
After waiting since episode 8 for them to find their way back to each other, I am starting to lose hope. But then, I really don't care about the others any longer. I won't stop watching because of Jay Ryan who is a better actor than they deserve. He gives a bravura performance week after week.

  25. It is definitely the acting abilities of the main characters that for me have kept me watching and like you will to the end. I do not want to see either one of the actors or Austin or Nina (sorry Sendhil-you are gorgeous but you are messing with the FAB 4) go to their separate projects. I love the amazing chemistry between JR and KK and the chemistry between all of the actors.

  26. Ana Paula , you wrote: "Kern arrived and said. "Oh remember all you saw and liked about BATB on season 1? Forget it. Remember all the things you hated? That's the path we chose. " That was so funny and so right. Thank you for voicing our thoughts so well.

  27. Aftermidnite you wrote: "I found it interesting that Gabe says "home" but Catherine doesn't have a key. She has to knock on the door and wait for him to let her in." I never even noticed that in the scene but your comment made a deep impression on me. It is a subtle hint about Cath´s poor relation with Gabe. Maybe the writers are more in tune than we give them credit for!
Jay Ryan acts with intelligence, heart and passion and makes it worth to continue watching BATB.

  28. who killed Thomas Chandler? what did he want to tell Cat? what did he know? ... did Alex die? (I mean, why did the *Dr Sorenson* follow her -and why show it btw- if in the end nothing happened!)... what happened to Claire as well, and Kyle?... why did no one realize that Gabe was the one who killed Ray and the carriage driver?... where is Sarah?... did Vincent recover all his memories or not?? (sorry this may have been answered in the show but since I missed three episodes -well, technically it's more that I refuse to watch them until Vincat are together again, too much Gabe and Tori in those!- I'm not sure!) what the heck happened to the gem stopping beasts from beasting out? (again, may have been answered and I missed it :?) how did Vincent know about Cat's parents before anyone else?... I mean I don't see him roaming freely around the lab he was held in, like Evan did, and reading Vanessa's file!... so many questions we will probably never have the answers to :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good points!! No most of them haven't been answered, and I wish they would be!! They haven't said V's memories are back, but he remembered his time at the hospital and his mentor so I guess we are to assume they are?! I hate assuming!! :/ This show has so much potential and so many potential story lines it's crazy! They could answer just one of those questions and give us a twist we didn't see coming.

To be honest, I either tweet during the Gabe & Tori crap or if watching it delayed I fast forward. It's easier to ignore that way.... :D lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think Cat moved in, or at least I hope not. I say 'we're home' when I'm with my boyfriend and he doesn't live with me. I think that would absolutely crazy if Cat really moved in with Gabe so soon. But if it is the case that is a very interesting observation. But I think sometimes we Beasties give them too much credit.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thank you for saying that. I miss the Fab 4 so much. I relish anytime Gabe isn't around them. I like him when he's alone off doing his own thing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good to hear so many Beasties liked this episode. I just feel like we're running out of time and everything is rushed and forced and sloppy and lazy when it didn't need to be. I just expect more from my favorite show. At least give me a better action scene or blow something up if you are going to shaft Cat, make Tess wallpaper and not turn Gabe back into a beast.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, the potential IS! That is what makes it so damn frustrating, LOL! I did like the ideas from this season they had just not the execution.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. The direction they have taken Cat is just really awful and I just want the old Cat back.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @DaniK don't get me started on the Cat and Gabe relationship or Vincent loosing his memory only to get it back again, so much wasted time and failed story arcs that anyone on staff should have known wouldn't resonate.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, so many unanswered questions, I swear we all should just all pick a day and start tweeting them at the writing staff. Probably the only way they'll ever get answered.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It was stated by some folks that Vincent did have his memories back but that was after Brad Kern said that he wouldn't get them back. It's a hot mess over in that writing room about main elements and I wish the suits would have left this show alone, we would have been better off.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't care what the intent the writers have in regards to Cat, they need to stop and look at what an unbelievable and I do mean unbelievable, mess she is. Cat was so relatable last season, even in a world a beasts and high intrigue she was what grounded the show in my eyes. She was flawed and messed up but all her other qualities made up for it. Right now, Cat's kind of like that one friend who when she calls you just let it ring and go to voicemail because your too exhausted to deal with her drama.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It seems like we have to have tit for tat in this show so because we were "shown" that Tori and Vincent were in that kind of relationship (even though we kept being told their relationship was different), the writers had to have "that:" kind of relationship as well for Cat, because the only way one can really truly find oneself is by having more and more relationships!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes, repetitive. I swear my ears were bleeding by the end of this episode. I could barely make it through a second rewatch, actually I tried, got bored/mad cut the laptop off, took a nap and then came back to it. BATB has almost always been a joy to rewatch, even the painful episodes. But this one was a bit tedious.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gabe is in a messed up situation and it's just another point in a long list of reasons why neither he nor Cat should be together in a relationship. Cat needs to put her big girl panties on and stop talking about Gabe to Vincent and Vincent to Gabe. No guy wants that rubbed in his face, CONSTANTLY. Hello? You have a best friend named Tess to discuss these things with! Even JT would be more appropriate. Missed opportunities.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cat use to have something outside of her romantic relationship, her job and her passion for helping people. That has disappeared. So has her ability to take charge, kick butt and be independent. As well as stand up and think for herself. She's letting Gabe, Tess and her Dad get in her head and I hate it. I was all for Cat having a relationship with someone else just not Gabe.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks @maureen for coming by to comment. Sorry these replies are so late, busy week at work. I'm on edge about how the rest of the season is going to go, especially episode 2x16. I need a grand gesture and some hope to help me make it until May. I see the baby steps but we're going to need a HUGE leap forward for me to swallow all the nonsense that has come before.

    ReplyDelete
  44. KK kills it and rose above the drek this week but I'm so disappointed with the character arc that I just get sad. I wanted a therapy arc for Cat. She has so many unresolved issues that she literally needs to have a breakdown and get it all out before she can make the journey back. They are short changing the character of Cat and I'm pissed. She deserves to be more than 1/3 of a love a triangle. She's the Beauty aka one half of the focus, she deserves better.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've watched most episodes in the same way... fast forwarding any and all scenes between Cat and Gabe, except for the last one when she tries to tell him what's wrong with her and all he gets from her speech is "Vincent"... idiot!! ... at least Vincent noticed immediately that she felt bad for killing Jason!!

I'll watch the episodes entirely later on, once I'm sure the epic hotness of VinCat's reunion can make me forget I've ever seen Gabe's lips anywhere close to Cat's!! otherwise I'm gonna have to gouge my own eyes out or cleanse them with bleach!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks for the review but i did like the episode and i live S2 character developement. I think we firget that Cat sucks at picking guys. She always goes for ones that she can leave easily. After how her and Vincebt ended i am not surprised she chose Gabe who she has ni true feelings for at all. His demands will be what will push her back to Vincent and she will know why she chose Vincent. I think her dream was telling because Vincent had a tear run down his cheek after he fell on the floor this = humanity, she is seeing it and is strugling with fighting it.

Not one of ny favorite episode but a few arcs that were important. The stronge Cat will return once she has worked through what she has been through this season.

  47. Donna Philips, realistically the writers cannot fix it, there's been way too much damage and the major damage for me is Vincent and Catherine kissing/sleeping with others. That was a deal breaker for me. They cannot undo what's been done.

But not only has Cat's character been damaged, but Vincent's as well. For me, he has done much worse than Cat. HE actually cheated on her when he kissed Tori right after being intimate with Cat. The writers are useless and lack basic intelligence and common sense.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Smallville999, I think you have a point when you said that 'the executives want us to hate the show so if it does get cancelled the fan backlash will be minimal"...I strongly believe this. Almost every episode has been bad. "Hothead" for me was the ONLY good one. THey keep giving fans what they don't want, which does not make sense. And they've turned the show into a soap opera.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lilith Hellfire, so agree with you!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Samantha, thank you for saying that! Finally someone who sees things for what they are! Vincent has treated Cat like CRAP and yes, she has (as always) stuck by him, even AFTER that disgusting kiss between him and useless Tori.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes, soooooo many unanswered questions! And to be frank, I don't think they will be answered. That just goes to show what a COMPLETE WASTE Season 2 has been. It NEEDS to be done over, but what are the chances of that?!

    ReplyDelete
  52. So nice to read an intelligent review and analysis of this show. Thank you, Lilith. Passion is so high on all sides in this fandom, but it gets difficult to find a place to discuss how much it hurts to see what they've (TPTB) done to ruin a show that was SO special. I had such high hopes of them taking it to the next level in Season 2. Instead, they took it to another place entirely! I love Sendhil as an actor, but do you think they struck some kind of deal with him to make him the focus of this season? Very strange. I agree with all the points about the other characters - poor Tess has been sidelined, even JT (totally minimized). I hope for a Season 3 just for them to fix it all. Unfortunately, I think they'll feel our support means they are doing something right, and I feel lost about it. I know I've probably lost readers of my fanfics because I'm increasingly vocal about my disappointment, but I'm living in a fantasy world of my own version of Season 2. It's the only way I can cope, lol. Thanks for your honesty and your continuing support for a show that probably no longer deserves it, but for which we all still hold a candle...

  53. Nail on the head. The speed at which Cat speeds from on hot mess to another leaving a trail of absolute destruction in her wake beggars belief. I guess all the trauma (losing father, losing Vincent and finding a stranger in his place, bio dad..list is endless) is really messing her up. So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I totally get your point. But for me The writers crossed a line and there is no going back. After Vincent pushed Catherine and things were all ok in the world that was it for me. Believe me i have tons of problems with Catherine this season, but i have tons of Vincent too.

Epic love is not forgive everything. Phisical abuse, I'm sorry but there is no forgiveness for me. It's sad but in a world where women respect themselves Vincent would be gone. When i heard that Catherine and Gabe would have a romance, i really thought they would make Gabe redeem himself, that he would suffer and pay for his mistakes. I was stupid, Gabe did nothing big to say, yes he deserves her. And See Catherine remember that LAST WEEK, i can't really put into words, how much i wished i hadn't watch the episode.

Vincent and Catherine will be together I always knew that, my problem is, What kind of epic love they have? This is not epic love... i can't even say they like each other.

It's a shame, I really believed Kern was coming to make everything right, but he just makes things worse week by week.Believe i understand that drama is what keep tv shows on air, For God's sake I watch Supernatural and One Tree Hill was one of my favorites Tv shows ever... Drama was what we had the most on OTH, but there is drama that keep the fans, and there is drama that push them away...

I can't just watch them happy and acting like those first 14 episodes didn't exist... I can't, because it's almost like Kern thinks we are all dumb and stupid... Kern is a so damn sexist that i can't understand how some women still say he was the best thing that happen to batb... You know and american friend who used to watch Batb said to me "Batb on air is an insult to women's inteligence" and i can't argue with her, she is right.

I don't even twitte about the show anymore, because if i do, when i see the writers saying that the fans are not twitting enough, i will tell them to just shut up... and like i've been saying Batb doesn't need bad publicity...But my patience has limits...

I really wish i could watch the show again like i did last year... I wish i could fight for a third season... I wish i could watch the episodes knowing that i won't be let down... but i can't.

I wish i could say Batb is a great show and deserves a third season, but it's a lie. We all hanging on our favorites characters from season 1, but the writers made perfect clear that they won't come back. Like i said, Kern arrived and said "Season 1 never exist, I don't care what happened there...Forget it". Sadly half of the viewers in America decided that they would forget that Beauty and The beast second season exist. Can we blame them??

Thank you so much for not voting me down lol I'm really surprised actually, because i thought i would received so many hatred(like i received in some Batb forums), i just wish i had your hope...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you so much... I truly wish i was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thank you... It's so sad that from a show i couldn't get enough of it, from i show i so not want to watch is terrible. Kern really did a poor job. Now i understand what Chamed fans say about him. And i never even watched Charmed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thank you so much... The numbers can be higher but Batb story is so damaged that i can't believe in anything that is happening or will happen. The so called epic love that Kern talks all the time, i don't believe anymore, and i doubt I'll ever will again. 14 episodes and He still thinks that he will have 5 seasons... I really thought that the writers had learned and Batb wouldn't be going through all of this again. The different is, last season, Batb didn't deserve to be in danger...this season does.

    ReplyDelete
  58. A bad soap opera if you allowed me to say. If you have an idea i don't even know the episodes name... Hothead was the one that Vincent found out his friend is a beast?? Season 1 i know them by heart... I guess you and Smallville999 are right, they want the show to get canceled...if it's not the reason, they are so incompetent that i hope no one EVER hire them.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I couldn't agree more. Let's not even talk about when Vincent pushed Catherine and it was like Catherine was the one to blame... The writes are sexist, (I've been using this word a LOT but it's the only one i can use to try to understand their heads) and incompetents... I've never seen a group of so bad people reunited in a tv show. I will right down their names so next time they come up with another tv I WON'T WATCH.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I know i will receive A LOT of hatred, but i have to get this off my chest. I don't know why i keep trying...I don't know why i keep giving BATB a chance. It's obvious That the writers and Kern really don't care about the show or how ridiculous this so called mythology is. I had stopped and I was done with the show BUt i read some reviewes and I thought, "Maybe something is still worth it."

Stupid me!! First of all, It's so funny how Vincent ALWAYS realize that he loves Catherine when there is no other woman around for him, but again, with Catherine like this i can't really blame him. What the hell happened with Girl Power? One of the things fans loved about the show was how Catherine was strong, determined... Catherine on season 2 is so crazy and so desperate that i can't understand how KK is still on the show.

Austin Basis... The writers don't appreciate AT ALL how he fights for this show, because Jt this season is beyond words. I really thought Jt and Tess would give us something good, but it's like they give one step forward and TEN back. It's a shame what they are doing with Jt and Tess, two great actors without use.

I have to disagree with one thing, I'm really glad Gabe is not the bad guy, because I was so sure he was. Specially, because the writers don't seem to think or have original ideas. I was really looking forward to Gabe and Cat "romance", because i never thought they would have the courage to go there, again, Stupid me, They just don't know how to do it. I guess it would be better if Gabe was the bad guy...

I laugh so hard when last week Catherine FINALLY remember all the bad things Gabe did, because let's face it,IS TOO LATE!

It's funny how Kern has a mythology for five seasons, just a quick thought, when the producers decide to do a tv show, it's not their job to have plan for, i don't know MORE THE ONE SEASON?? If they didn't believe in the show, how they want new fans? Kerns is so worried about his 5 year plan and guess what? Batb is pretty much dead. It will be a real miracle if the show gets a third season, and please don't blame the lack of promotion, because the problem here is the show is BAD.

Yeah i have the right to say because i fought really hard for this second season. I even sent a book to Mark and now i feel betrayed. Kern arrived and said. "Oh remeber all you saw and liked about BATB on season 1? Forget it. Remember all the things you hated? That's the path we chose. Fans of season 1? Who cares? We want new fans. And guess what? No new fans and fans that stopped watching.

Well what can I expect from a show runner that says Vincent and Catherine will be together, because the show is called Beauty and The Beast? If He doesn't believe in their love the viewers will?

Kern is for me a sexist, and see how some women are so ok with that, really gets me worried. I know i will get A LOT OF vote down, but i just need to say how much Batb this season really let me down. I don't believe in Catherine and Vincent love at this point anymore. There is no realistic way that the writers can put them together and i will be like "yeah, they love each other." Specially because now they will do everything they can to just put them together to try to save the show.

The show was magical, even with a thousands of flaws season one had. But now...The magic is gone and so are a big part of the fans. It's sad, really sad how they destroyed this show.

You did a great job with the review! Like always, next week i will come back. but i won't watch the episode first, like i did this week. I will stick with my plan and read the reviewes and see if its worth it. It saves my heart from deception.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Great review. Be sure that many of us think the exactly same way you do.

"The show was magical, even with a thousands of flaws season one had. But now...The magic is gone and so are a big part of the fans. It's sad, really sad how they destroyed this show."

    Excellent choice of words.

  62. Thank you again for an honest review. The atrocious dialog shocked me which would be acceptable in any other CW teen-drama shows. Sadden my heart to hear those lines coming out from my favorite characters, but I will still stand by my favorite show until the end even with a bleeding heart (big thanks to the producers/writers.) Staying on the positive side, I enjoyed the funny moments, the continuation of the bromance between JT&V, the development of JT's character and the most obvious always amazing performance from Jay Ryan. I totally agreed with you that JR smashed the emotional range of the re-born Vincent/Beast, adding more depth to the character despite the abysmal dialog. I especially like the Dr. K and Dr. M scenes in this episode, superb performance from both actors, intense but no over-acting, soft but still sir-up your emotions. All I can say about the Cat/Beauty character is just like this S2's writing. I hope the writers will bring back (and up) the Cat/Beauty part by next episode and the Beauty & Beast part before the hiatus. This season the show has become more dimensional, full of romance, action, crime-fighting, supernatural, and a bit of comedy. The potential is there, just need to work on the writing that can only be achieved by the renewal of Season 3.

  63. Hi Lillith - great review. This episode was also not really one of my faves, but I did enjoy it nonetheless. I also found myself wishing Gabe would become beast again. IMO his character was much more tolerable when he was bad. Gabe has been so sweet and wayyyy too nice that it's been quite nauseating. I was really glad when he finally dropped the "Mr. Nice Guy" routine and basically told Catherine that Vincent needs to go. I think (and hope) that his true colours will finally start coming through. I was also disappointed that the supposed JT & Tess hook up did not even get so much as a mention! That was a WTF moment for sure! It also does not seem realistic that Cat would be kept out of the loop on this, since they are supposedly best girl friends. I have to admit, this was probably the first time that I truly realized that Catherine is using Vincent (well, his beast anyway) for her own ends. She rejected his beast, but now is ok with using that side of him because it suits her purposes??? Another WTF moment for me. The only bright side in all of this is that the road back to VinCat seems to finally be in view! I really hope we get to see S1 VinCat again...before this next hiatus hell we will have to endure!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree! I keep wanting to have hope and the faith that we are constantly being asked to have, but so far haven't really felt that much to hope for (. I know the end game is VinCat, we always knew that from the beginning). Even the interviews that say this or that is going to happen, don't really come to fruition. I want to believe that 215 will see the backside of Gabe but I am not really even sure. I too need to see the a pretty epic episode before hiatus to keep me going.

  65. Great review - it's so good can to share your opinion . Despite some flaws , I enjoyed the episode .
I agree that there are many loose ends , like : who killed Cat's stepfather and why ? Nobody Vincent's family appeared after he pleaded alive, including that nephew of the first episodes .
I'm also disappointed with Cat. She really is unrecognizable , except for their relation to work , I see her completely lost. That sensible woman as she was, would not enter into a relationship with Gabe after all he has done in the past.
Unlike Cat , Vincent returned 100% its real essence - this would not have been too fast? But it's so good to have back our Vincent so sweet and human. I think the " Beast " Vincent side should not be completely discarded - it may need not only as a protection as to promote good actions, and I understand that with the control they have now, that side can work very well .
Enjoyed the support from JT to relationship from VinCat , unlike Tess that never support . I hate to see her pushing Cat to Gabe .

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree. BATB only salve at moment because of the characters Vincent and JT and still yes, JT have only a few moments.
It's big the importance that give to Gabe and Tess don't add many things, all that She do is push Cat to Gabe.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Clearly Creepy Gabe has a friend behind the scenes...he is so useless in the show...just sniffing around Cat like a dog in heat. The Catherine from S1 would have never, never trusted Gabe no less slept with him..the writers have just swan dove off the cliff to destroy the beauty that was the show. Now it's borderline cheesy soap opera with unrealistic triangles. Not to mention the chemistry between Cat and Gabe is beyond zero. Hope the writers can fix this show but I'm not betting on it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well said...Creepy Gabe has been the ruination of the show...so unnecessary...all his has done was stalk Catherine. If he dies the show will probably get better ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  69. No hate from me. IMO I think you've said what most are thinking. It's as if the producers, exec's or whoever want us to hate the show so if it does get cancelled the fan backlash will be minimal. How sad, so much talent wasted. (Edit) Live+7 increased 100%, that's well over a million viewers (1.5?) Miracles can happen. There's still time to turn this around.
