Arrow - Season 2 - Andrew Kreisberg Interview

TVLINE | Over the first run of Season 2 episodes, it felt as if you were setting up pieces on a chessboard….
That was definitely the plan.

TVLINE | So as the show comes back, will we see these different elements coalesce and take shape?
Absolutely. One of the things we learned from last season was we built up to Episode 9, where we revealed that Malcolm Merlyn was the Dark Archer, then we kind of put things on simmer — and this year we’re coming back [from the break] with a bang. Oliver is obsessed with finding the man in the skull mask, Brother Blood, who he finally got eyes on in Episode 9, and we’ll be seeing Slade in the present and his machinations with Sebastian to bring about Oliver’s downfall.

These next four episodes are also, in a way, a big Laurel chapter because we really get to see Laurel’s drug use come back to bite her. She hits rock bottom and Katie Cassidy is just delivering the most amazing performance. She’s really kicked it up a notch and we’re so proud of her.

TVLINE | That’s good to hear, because one of my questions was how you planned to make Laurel relevant to this next wave of storytelling, beyond possibly dating Sebastian.
You know, it’s been somewhat hard, I think, for Katie and us to hear some of the criticisms of her character because we don’t do anything without thinking about it. And one of the great things about having as much success as we had in Season 1 was the freedom to allow things to unfold the way that they should. We’ve always had a fantastic plan for Laurel’s character, and I know that there’s impatience out there in the world to see her “strap on the fish nets” [as Black Canary] but everything we’re doing is all about leading up to that in a the way that we feel keeps it the most realistic and grounded. To take somebody who is a public interest lawyer and turned her into a super hero… you have to go through the paces. So this season we’ve really been putting her through her paces. We always think of these things as chapters, and these next four episodes are really about Laurel. She’s taking center stage as she begins to suspect that Sebastian is not exactly who he seems.

  1. "but everything we’re doing is all about leading up to that in a the way that we feel keeps it the most realistic and grounded." you mean NOT doing anything.

  2. Everything sounds good except the Laurel stuff.

  3. I'm starting to think they just don't want to acknowledge the real reason people dislike her.

  4. …I read that and was like "that's not the reason why I dislike her character". I'd actually prefer Sara to remain BC to be perfectly honest.

There are a lot of people that are coherent in why they don't like Laurel, but also there are those who are only disliking her for shipping reasons.

  6. I'd be very disappointed if they sacrificed Sara for Laurel a badly written and acted character. I hope he's just lying to cover some twist.

  7. I don't buy Laurel, she slept and is still in love with the cheating ex- boy friend who cheated on her with her sister. It turns me off. Can't connect with her.

  8. She has no respect for her self, how can she, the smart lawyer, forget what Oliver did to her and her family and just sleep with him?!!

  9. HA! Geez TVLINE said "How you plan to make Laurel relevant" Ha, damn, even they think Laurel is irrelevant. That's a burn. Well let's see how this "chapter" of Laurel's goes. Just as long as they don't take away Sara. I'll be fine.

"So this season we've really been putting her through her paces" Pftt, more like molasses. Let's get this show on the road already. Idt "the world" is impatient with her "strapping on the fish nets" it's more they're impatient with her strapping on a personality. That's what i think.

I'm just glad that the writers and KC are hearing the complaints, and want to turn that around. Now it's going to be " Just you wait. I'll show you. I'm worth liking" Well good!! I for one would like to see this "new improved Laurel" She's got one last chance, so they need to make these 4 episodes count. Seriously.

I agree with you in some level, but i think in life things tend to be a little bit more complicated than this. Oliver has changed A LOT, she definitely noticed that.
My point is, i'm a Olicity shipper. I love their interactions and i think they are better together. And if i have any problem with Laurel is not 'cause i want her off the show so my ship can be fulfilled.

  11. They better make this chapter of Laurel's story awesome. They can spin words in many ways and explain themselves but the truth is they butchered the character by making her sleep with Oliver so that Tommy's death gets more impact. And this season its a crime what they have done to the character.

While I have no love lost for Katie Cassidy, I think no actress will be able to make Laurel likable as of now. So they better do this story line good and make us connect with Laurel. I have doubts because they are doing so many story lines and characters together. I sincerely hope after this 4 episodes I will come out and say. Go Laurel I root for you.

  12. I did not connect to Laurel even before a started shipping Olicity. I did not like the character, was not attracted to her. I have to admit that I liked when Tommy was with her. They both balanced each other, and there was chemistry between them, but then they killed him.
