Once Upon a Time - Episode 3.05 – Good Form – REVIEW

Once upon a time…Regina conjured up an Apollo chocolate bar.

This week’s episode of “Once Upon a Time” is titled “Good Form,” but given the spotlight it got in promos and interviews, the show might as well have called it “OMG Emma and Hook Kiss Squee!” So let’s jump right to it.

I guess I should say upfront that I’m not a particularly hardcore Captain Swan shipper. And honestly, I’ve always found the familial relationships on this show much more interesting than the romantic ones. All that said, Jennifer Morrison and Colin O’Donoghue definitely have chemistry, the kiss was hot, and the scenario (Hook cheekily hinting for one, Emma grateful but in control, both taken aback by how passionate it was) made sense given their current relationship and the bigger Operation: Cobra Rescue arc.

What was more interesting to me than the smooch itself is what happened next, with that wily Peter Pan revealing to Hook that Neal is both alive and in Neverland. It puts Hook in quite the pickle of a predicament – we know he cares about Neal/Bae, but we’ve also seen that he isn’t above getting his hand and hook dirty in the name of love. Also, while we know what Pan is saying is true, one couldn’t really blame Hook for thinking it’s just another mind game. Curious to see what our smitten scallywag does with this information. And given the complicated and tangled relationships between them, I actually think Hook/Emma/Neal could be a good love triangle.

Outside of the kiss, it was a Hook heavy episode. In the flashbacks, we got his origin story as Killian Jones, a fastidious naval officer (and, I always get confused – is this some kind of fictional Victorian England or the real world version?) who is pro-rules and anti-rum, so basically his own polar opposite. But that all changes when he and his captain brother (and they call each other such so many times, they should have just had Henry Ian Cusick guest star) set sail to Neverland, with fun flying ship effects.

That first encounter with magic and Peter Pan begins Hook’s transformation into the man he is today, but I thought his about-face at the end was rushed. It’s reasonable that the reveal about his king’s treachery (is anyone else wondering if this nameless, ruthless king might turn out to be another fairy tale villain?) would shake his world view, and that he would be eager to blame someone other than himself for his brother’s death. But abandoning all he’d held dear so quickly? And every other member of the crew eager to mutiny as well? It was all just a little too neat. Still, O’Donoghue did well playing different shades of Hook in these scenes.

Meanwhile, in the present day, Hook went on this week’s A-mission with Charming. And while the dying Charming thought he was taking a final jaunt to recover the sextant (a dirty sounding device that could decipher Neal’s star map), it turns out the incurable dream shade poisoning can totally be cured after all! No big surprise as I don’t think any of us expected Charming to die, but I do find the cure’s catch – that Charming can live only if he stays in Neverland – a compelling one that will cause drama down the road. And I liked that, even though Hook was doing something selfless, there was still a self-serving undercurrent re: getting in Charming’s good graces.

I’m not happy, however, that Charming is still lying to Snow and Emma. I assumed he was going to come clean about his initial poisoning after he and Hook returned so that he spun another lie was pretty lame. He’s not going to croak any minute, what’s the harm in telling the truth? I hope Snow gets to ream him out when all is inevitably revealed.

In the meantime, I thought Josh Dallas did a nice job as Charming tried to subtly say his goodbyes even as his emotions were getting the best of him. And I loved Charming kissing all over Snow when he got back, with Emma and Regina both looking hilariously grossed out.

Speaking of Emma and Regina, their subplot this week ruled. Early on, Emma becomes convinced that they need to send Henry some kind of message so he won’t give up hope that they’re coming for him (and why is Henry losing faith so soon? He spent the better part of a year trying to convince Emma she was the Savior. He’s been stuck in Neverland for like four days!). While the boys are off on their MacGuffin mission, the girls manage to trap a Lost Boy, though he refuses to help. Regina, as she’s been doing all season, then offers up a darker, magical solution. So far, so standard, right?

But this time, Emma agrees with her and actually holds a horrified Snow back as Regina enslaves the kid’s heart. And instead of being punished for this wickedness, it pays off as they’re able to see Henry through an enchanted mirror and let him know his family is looking for him. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

As Regina points out, this kind of thing is why she’s along for the ride and I’m glad they finally addressed that. I also liked that Snow, while not pleased, didn’t get too preachy with Emma. And it led to the wonderful moment when the women, this unorthodox mix of mothers and daughters, whose toes fall over the lines of right and wrong, gathered around the mirror and beamed in their love for the same little boy. Lovely, lovely work from Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

So who’s swinging in that wooden box next to Neal’s? Given how prominent the Little Mermaid is in the promo for next week, could it be Ariel? Has Tinker Bell been taken? One of the Darlings? Another character from the Peter Pan mythos we haven’t seen yet, like Tiger Lily? Share your thoughts in the comments.

    Enjoyed reading it!

  2. Considering they have been laying the ground work for Hook to basically be Wesley from The Princess Bride, I am thinking that Captain Swan is the end game. It will be rocky for sure, but True Love always is.

  3. I love it when shows make Princess Bride references! They're the only pre 90s references I get :D

  4. Great review! You made some great points!

Like about Henry... "and why is Henry losing faith so soon? He spent the better part of a year trying to convince Emma she was the Savior. He’s been stuck in Neverland for like four days!"

  5. My favorite scenes were definitely with the three women. Emma holding Snow back and apologizing as Regina ripped out the Lost Boy's heart. But even more so, Regina finally stepping up and taking some control in their quest. She's used to being in charge and getting what she wants - so far this season, she's acquiesced to the others' plans too easily. I can see how this will lead to her helping Emma learn to use and control her magic. It's likely that the two of them will need to combine (perhaps with Rumple in the mix) to defeat Pan.
My heart broke a little when Regina said she was there for the 'dark' stuff and so the others could keep their happy family. It was an admission that she knows she can't become that 'good' person that Henry so desperately wants her to be. She is continually drawn into the darkness, often by outside forces. Even though her motives might be good (to rescue Henry), she still falls on the evil side of the good vs. evil battle. At the very least, she knows that's where she stands as far as Snow is concerned - no matter how many chances she's given Regina to change...she just keeps falling short.

Re: promo for "Ariel" next week - anybody else wondering how Ariel is going to fit into all this? Is she in Neverland waters or in Storybrooke or back in FTL? Is she yet another person who could be helpful in saving Henry if Regina hadn't scorned her long ago? (Awesome for Lana that she got to portray her favorite Disney villain, though!)

  6. Maybe just "Lana = Ursula", but "Ursula ≠ Regina".

  7. Great review!

I thought hook's "about-face at the end was rushed" too, especially the crew members. Then again he did say his brother was all the family he had left. Plus working for the King seemed like something he was passionate about and dedicated his life to. So maybe just lost everything that was still important to him ("all he’d held dear")? Seems like there's info leading up to this that could be fleshed out more. Or I am probably just over thinking things :) Overall I enjoyed the hook story and hope we get to see more.

  8. Good rewiew ! While I loved Hook's scenes for me the highlight of the episode was the beautiful moment between Henry and the ladies and the heart scene ;) there was some strong character development on those :)

  9. Thank you!
I mean, like I said in the review, I kinda understand Hook's motivation. He's lost everything in his old life so he throws him into a new, opposite direction. But presumably a ship called the Jewel of the Realm is staffed with the best, most loyal men in the naval fleet and ALL of them are fine with mutiny and piracy? Seems unlikely.

  10. Agreed, Regina has mostly been standing on the sidelines and snarking on the others' plans so far this season so I found it refreshing that Emma took her side with little hesitation and that the use of evil magic didn't blow up in her face for once.

  11. I'm thinking maybe the Evil Queen conjurs up Ursula. So Urusla looks like her (and is played by Lana Parrilla), but isn't actually the Evil Queen.

  12. Thank you!

And yeah, I'm not sure what Henry's deal is. Perhaps Neverland and Pan are affecting him more than we think? Then again, if Henry has "the heart of the truest believer," shouldn't he be less susceptible to that?

  13. While the show doesn't rise and fall with Captain Swan for me, I do think, so far, their romance (or potential one) is more interesting than Emma and Neal's.
    Thanks for reading!

  15. I've seen some BTS photos where Ariel and Belle are hanging out together in Storybrooke!

  16. He's going a bit mad if you ask me! Jumping around like a loony, whacking people with swords... Maybe it is Neverland...plus Pan may be way more convincing in the flesh! It was good to see Henry get some of his old spunk back though, after talking to his mothers.

  17. Thanks!
That scene was really great. I loved Snow trying to bounce into frame when they were using the mirror. "I'm here too, Henry!" Hee.

  18. Love your review! And yes I loved that scene where Henry got to see the 3 women in his life all beaming at him and working together to get him back.

Something I'm wondering though…when Charming told everyone that Hook saved him (though lied about how he saved him) and used Hook's rum for the toast…did he put that water in there? I hope I'm wrong and that he just wanted to honor Hook but I got the sneaking suspicion that he did. I guess the question is does that water work on future injuries and illnesses? If it does and Charming did spike the rum with that water (I know that sounds weird) he's probably hoping it will keep them safe while on the island. But I'd like to think he wouldn't do that without their consent…but I don't know…he hasn't seemed so "Charming" with all his lies to his family this season...

  19. Lol me too !!!!

  20. That and none of them had families to get back to?

  21. Thank you!
I highly doubt it. The lying Charming is doing is already dirtying up the character, him dosing the rest of the family would be assassination. What specifically about the scene made you think that?

  22. Nice review! Liked it. On the other hand , the person or people in the crate cos with Pan you never know .. I bet it is either Ariel or Tink, it is very intriguing and I like it, everyone in this show is a Star, from Regina to Pan and even the other lost boys, I love this show so much!! it is really great!! I cant wait for Sunday!!

  23. Yeah it would be assassination. I hope you're right. I don't know…he's been so sneaky this season and doing things on his own without even talking to his wife about it because he thinks it's what's best and he thinks he's protecting his family, even though he didn't give them any say in the matter. So I guess I'm just having a hard time trusting him after all that and I found it a bit odd that he wanted everyone to drink from Hook's flask. I really do want to believe that he only did that to propose a toast and show appreciation to the pirate who saved his life...but I also feel like Charming's ego has been getting the better of him this season and with Neverland being so dangerous, he could go to any lengths to keep his family safe. Like I said I hope I'm wrong and that I just read too much into the scene. I tend to do that. :P

  24. Thanks Lucks!
Ariel seems like the obvious choice so I almost hope it's not her. I've seen some speculation that maybe it's Rumplestiltskin's father, who Pan alluded to in the last episode. That'd be interesting.
