A bit of everything, the central idea has to interest me, the channel its definitely something I take into consideration as CW series never appeal to me for example whereas FX dramas usually do. Mostly though its trailers I can usually tell pretty quickly whenever a show is for me or not once I see footage of it.
As there are so many shows airing then I do look at critic previews/reviews of the Fall season as well.
I used to always watch shows with actors I liked but have long since realised there is only so much rubbish I can tolerate for an actor I like!
I also used to start a tv series attracted by familiar faces, then I realized that the only thing that matters is the quality of the script and the development of it. A great writer can always do wonders on a mediocre actor, while a good actor can not save a bad script/an entire show.
Can only vote for one, my votes would have gone to cast and plot. I don't care what network or time it is on, I record everything for the next day, only SPN gets watched live. But I will check out a show if an actor I like is in it and then the plot can hook me.
Usually it's a mixture of things. I could say that if my friends recommend it, I´ll probably check it out, but only if the promos seem interesting. If an actor or actress I like is in a new show, I'll give it a go too.
The plot, storyline, character development, dialogues matter the most. Then the actors/crew members/directors of course. A few shows I've seen based on recommendations by my friends and family members too, but only if the story interests me.
Well I'll always give Bad Robot (and friends) a try, but on the whole it's a combination of cast/crew, plot/premise, and then promos to see if a feel can be abtained in terms of visuals/execution. I also tend to gravitiate towards dramas with mixed genres such as sci-fi, fantasy, and/re crime/mystery... I also sometimes look for recpmendations, like recanty was told about Broadchurch, which I really like and for some reason never heard of it before...Sometimes I also put things off, because I can only retian only so much Tv at a time. :)
Cast and crew are important to me, but by that I really mean writers and creators more than actors. I will give Eric Kripke and Joss Whedon a shot for most of their shows. Plot makes a difference to me. Serialized stories with strong characterization are something I prefer over procedurals or sitcoms. I have found many a show via recommendations from friends and I do read reviews to get a sense of what show I may enjoy. With DVRs, OnDemand, online viewing, Hulu Plus, etc. time slot really doesn't play a big role. Sometimes I have to really plan an evening (hello Tuesdays and Thursdays), but with foresight and and my DVR listing conflicts week in advance I can work around almost anything.
The premise has to be interesting. You can have the best cast and crew but if the writing is crappy nothing can save a series, With great writing even mediocre talent can shine.
I'd say the plot, the commercials/trailers,the cast, and lastly maybe the dayy/time it airs.If I already have a full schedule at that time,I may not watch it.The commercials/trailers are big cause ssometimes a trailers bad and you could decide not to watch or sometimes if a trailers good, you'll watch, even if it's not normally the type of show you'd watch.
For me it is mostly cast and crew that draw me into a new series, but also the plot. However, even if the cast and crew and the plot do not lure me in, I will watch a new series no matter what if it airs on a handful of cable networks like A&E, AMC, FX, HBO and Showtime.
Time of day does not matter whatsoever since I DVR everything and watch at my leisure.
I do take interest in reviews, but for what they say between the lines. Very few critics I can agree with all the time, but some do give information that I find interesting such as pacing or style, quality of performances, production values and cinematography etc... Whether they like it or not is irrelevant to me, but what they say can pique my interest.
Promos do not mean much to me either honestly. There is a large difference between shaping a 30-second ad and shaping a 45-minute episode.
Ratings mean very, very little to me. It's nice when a show I watch has decent ratings that will keep it on the air, but I will watch a quality show (or even a poorly done show that amuses me) even if it has bad ratings.
Cast and crew first. If there's anyone I recognise and I like their character in whatever show I know them from, I'll watch at least the first episode, regardless of the plot. For example, I only started watching Arrow because of Paul Blackthorne. Now I love it. The plot for obvious reasons. Network is important to me too as I find some networks to be more appealing to me. Reviews and recommendations are another. I caught up on Under the Dome after 6 episodes had aired because I saw a positive review.
The cast and plot! Even if the plot doesn't attract me at first sight, if one actor/actress I love is in it I will take my chance and decide next... So the cast first, and then the plot if the cast say me nothing. I don't like to watch a show because everyone else watch it, even if now I watch a lot of popular show, that's not my reason to watch, and I rarely watch trailer before, I want to keep the surprise until the premiere.
For me the first thing that motivates me to watch something is the concept/premise, But that isn't what keeps me coming back for more, What brings me back is obviously the quality.
The plot, the ratings, the commercials and trailers, the reviews and recommendations from others and also the cast and crew (but I'm not fussed with that one). Its interesting to see what influence people to watch a series. For me its probably the plot more than anything else. I would be doubtful if it was a comedy but will pay attention if it was a horror show and if I liked an actor/actress from a previous one that may be the big factor into getting it.
The Plot without a doubt. If the description is something which attracts me, preferably sci-fi , mystery or an unusual idea, then I would tune in. X
Close on that comes the Pilot.
I have seen some comments on other threads saying that the pilot isn't all that important; it's just to introduce the characters, plot-line etc; but to me that is all wrong.
IMO, the pilot is paramount! It has to be so interesting that it makes you want to continue watching.

I don't really care about the actors, as most shows which I have loved had actors or actresses that I had no previous knowledge of. It's their and writers' job to flesh out those characters and make us come to love them and to keep the show interesting.
A lot of the time I take recommendations from others, especially people I know like the same kind of TV as me. Sometimes if a trailer or plot synopsis really catches my eye I'll give it a shot on the off chance, or if a creator/actor I really like is attached to a project I'll try it purely on that basis. The only time I pay attention to ratings is if there are bad ratings attached to a dodgy plot, which I take as a sure sign to stay away.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It will only allow me to select one option (from mobile)

In order: not simply the plot, it has to be a concept that has its own identity, the screenwriter and the network.
ReplyDeleteSame on the computer...
ReplyDeleteI also used to start a tv series attracted by familiar faces, then I realized that the only thing that matters is the quality of the script and the development of it. A great writer can always do wonders on a mediocre actor, while a good actor can not save a bad script/an entire show.
ReplyDeleteAll Of The Above.
ReplyDeleteI guess Andy forgot to check the multiplr selection option.

ReplyDeleteLooks like a bug with Polldaddy. The poll is setup to allow 5 selections but it's not working. Hopefully Polldaddy will fix the issue.

First, the plot. If it's not good enough, I check cast/crew, trailers and reviews..
