Hey All,
As you know after each episode we post polls so that fans can vote and discuss the episode. Last year we decided that for our most popular shows to collate the poll ratings and to display the poll rating average for each episode so that you can can compare how readers rate episode.
You can see the table for 2012/13 here.
We rate the episode by giving each rating a points system eg Awesome = 5, Great = 4, Good = 3, OK = 2, Poor = 1 and Awful = 0. We then work out the average rating.
We might extend this to more shows in the future if we find time and enough votes are cast on the "What did you think polls"

Don't the trolls that do nothing but vote things down mess this up? Isn't there some way to see if the same people going and voting awful all the time ever vote awesome.

ReplyDeleteI tend to vote too fast everytime: I see a poll and I usually rate too high. I think it's because I'm still in the moment of the episode, but when I do take the time I tend to rate pretty honest/conferm the ep.

ReplyDeleteI think @rehabber does have a point. I just made a quick test with the latest episode poll of Breaking Bad which had 5 awful votes and I think it's clear that all 5 are trolls.
ReplyDeleteThe score without counting the 5 awful votes: 1478/299 = 4,94
The score counting the 5 awful votes: 1478/304 = 4,86
So even though the number of trolls is low and the poll has 300+ votes, there is almost one tenth of a difference between the scores.
My suggestion would be to count "Awful" votes only if the person also comments on why they voted awful and why they hated the episode. I think that proves that they have actual reasons to dislike the episode and helps the team distinguish them from the trolls.
There is no way to correlate the poll votes with comments. We just have to accept that all polls will attract a certain number of trolls and live with it, the polls will all be relative as trolls tend to vote awful in all polls.

ReplyDeleteSo do these automatically update as new people vote, say people who watch the episodes in marathon batches, or are there a certain number of days in which votes are counted?
ReplyDeleteIt's not automatic, but we update the totals every day for a couple of weeks for each episode. 99% of all votes occur in the first 2 weeks.

ReplyDeleteI don´t think the impact is that minimal...for example, last week with Castle; the awesomes were a little under 80% before the fan favourite poll started and a few hours after the awfull and poor took such an increase that surely afected the final result. And that had to do with the trolls.

ReplyDeleteIt's a table to show how users rated each episode of show. It makes no difference when comparing to other shows.
That doesn't happen often Usually there isn't a bunch of trolls voting. And sometimes people who vote awful aren't trolls.
ReplyDeleteI wait to vote if I'm super hyped about the episode or I really didn't like it and go back later but usually I end up voting great or awesome for most of my shows. I'm just pretty easy to satisfy in less I don't like a turn for a character or I found the episode extremely boring.

ReplyDeleteI think if the down votes also showed who is doing the voting like they do for up votes, then the downs would stop unless they really did not like the show. I also wish to comment you had to be other than a "guest".

ReplyDeleteI only bother to vote for the episodes i saw and liked. And almost always i hit awesome even if the episode was great or good. whenever i see someone vote awful in supernaturall or tvd or TO i always know they are trolls, cause these shows can be lame sometimes but never outright awful.

ReplyDeleteIf I liked an episode I ten to vote great - just to be able to upvote if an episode takes my breath away I go for awsome. If I I start to get distracted (get something to eat, talk, take a break) I analyize why and then I decide. Analyzing and talking/commenting with others also gives me a more critical view on things and it's great. But to be honest living in blissful ignorance makes it often easier to enjoy (see Lost Girl).

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid we don't have the time or the manpower to cover any more currently. We have to do these all manually and its very time-consuming unfortunately.
Next season we will look at the polls that get the most votes and then decide which ones do then.
I understand and I never knew this could be such hard work, but your idea to created a poll for next season is a great idea. Anyway thanks for this article and thanks for the answer.

ReplyDeleteWas just looking at last year's and saw that 'Zero Day' had a 4.94 rating. It has no votes for awful or poor - only 12 votes weren't 'Awesome'. http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/05/poll-what-did-you-think-of-person-of.html I wonder if anything has been better rated than that?

ReplyDeleteIt's funny Castle, had the highest rated episode of all shows (4.86) and then the very next episode was the second lowest rated episode (2.95) of all shows rated...second only to the HIMYM finale (1.48). I actually liked the Castle finale, it made me feel...irritated that I have to wait until September but I still felt something.
